Happy New Year! As we move into 2020, it’s fair to say that Gold Coast Region’s busiest quarter is straight ahead with lots of great activities on the calendar. Many traditional activities will be repeated and new ones introduced. Several of the most popular are the tours to the keys and the 48 hours of Sebring Club Race (you can participate as a volunteer, racer, auto crosser Drivers ed, or visitor/observer). As usual, members will get multiple email blasts about events. However, if you don’t read your e-mail you can always check the GCR website, Kassette newsletter, facebook or just go to clubregistration. net and see what’s available. As for the new activities, look for more tours, trips to a few shops we have never visited, much more for our PCA Juniors, and a few secrets we have in the works....as well as new opportunities that present themselves throughout the year. With the elections over, 2020 brings several new GCR officers / directors and committee posts..... see the separate announcement later in this issue. Also new will be a totally revamped set of by-laws, based on PCA national’s template for regional by-laws. These new by laws will be available on the GCR website. Looking back on 2019, I would have to say GCR had one of the most exciting years in a long time...here are a few of the highlights. This listing does not include all the activities that we do every month like Porsche & Pancakes or 3rd Thursday socials or events we do every year or every other month...like AutoX Re-introduction to what a rally event is. GCR has not had a rally since 2012 and with Parade coming, we decided it was way overdue. The April gimmick rally/ mural tour was a smashing success, and helped prepare those going to Parade for this type of competition. Want another rally?? One is planned for the south end
of our region in 2020. Porsche Parade in Boca Raton...Parade has dramatically changed from the last time GCR hosted a parade in 1968. GCR had over 200 members attend and most volunteered in some capacity. GCR took home many trophies, especially in concours and AutoX. Many members are now hooked on Parade or Parade style events (think Zonefest, Rennfest or Spring Thing) and plan to attend the 2020 Parade in Palm Springs CA. A record setting contribution to our charities, with Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital being the largest recipient. With an initial goal of 20K, this goal was shattered, in a large part due to 19 K collected at parade thu the raffling of Parade surfboards at 2 of the Parade banquets. A huge thanks to PCA National for their assistance and the generous donations of PCA members. Not 1 but 2 toy drives to different Children’s Hospitals, in different counties, on the same date, as part of a coordinated plan with all of Zone 12 regions, called the Porsche “Parade of Presents”. This was the 1st time a coordinated effort was made to do this and GCR was the only Florida region to do 2 locations...Next year we’ll shoot for 3 A tour outside our Zone..I’’m talking about GCR’s tour to Fontana Dan, N.C. to see the leaves change and drive some of the best Porsche roads on the East Coast. This event was so popular, plans are being made to do this again...with a few new and interesting twists. (no pun intended) The revised by laws were passed by the vast majority of GCR members approving, but what isn’t told is the hard work, and perseverance that went into getting that final draft on the ballot. Thanks again to the by-law committee and Board for getting this done
Yes...if this looks like a piece from last months President’s article, some of this is the same but there is at least 1 new component and the items from last month are worth repeating. Here it is again, our region needs assistance in a few other areas...Here’s the details:....remember PCA is fueled by volunteers AutoX site...we need a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues and school/government parking facilities. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot which was great...big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot ...hopefully temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in” someone that has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site?... are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954 946-3196 if you can help out finding a new AX site. This year many of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. A Community Service Project... Not to be confused with our charity efforts such as Joe DiMaggio Hospital. At Parade this is one of the most distinguished awards and focus seems to be more on helping those in need directly rather than collect cash donations. The winner this year was a region that worked on several Habitat for Humanity houses for low income families. Lots of rewarding sweat equity. Editor’s Notes February is always a favorite time of the year for me. The Rolex 24 Hour race has just completed at Daytona, many of the Gold Coast member volunteers are working the largest PCA club race in the world with their friends from the Suncoast region at the 48 Hours at Sebring club race. Last year along with enjoying the 48 Hours, my wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary with over one hundred of our Porsche friends. Not a bad location for our special party. I would like to welcome the new GCR officers and board for 2020. Thank you for voting and helping to select the members that will be working hard to lead the club during 2020. If you would like to volunteer and help support the club the best way is to attend our events and find an area that
Let’s win a National award... We have great events and fabulous members, but need a world class report writer to wrap it all up and put together a winning submission in December 2020.. if you share my vision and dream to win another national award, and have the creative writing skills, as well as an imaginative eye to make the presentation world class, give me a call. While I would love to see GCR win another Region of the Year award...(last time GCR won was in 1986), a win in the PCA family of the year category (GCR families have won this 5 times) or PCA enthusiast of the year (GCR has won 2 times) or PCA Community service award (to the best of my knowledge GCR has never won this.) would be fabulous. We have the right events & people... let’s fine tune our writing and presentation skills and talents and get-r-done. If we are successful, the award would be presented at the 2021 Porsche Parade, which will be held in French Lick, Indiana, site of the 2015 parade and the last time GCR won a National award. PCA is made up of very dedicated volunteers who work hard to make the club better for their fellow members. As we always say, it’s not about the cars but it’s about the people. No saying we don’t have some fantastic cars! The people are just as fantastic! To see how fantastic our people are, check out our feature article, “ A Gathering of Santa’s Helpers on page 10. This story is a continuation of the charity efforts that began at this years Parade in Boca with the donation of funds from auction of several special surfboards. Our members do have very big hearts and we
are always looking for ways to give back to others who are in need. I would like to thank our members who submit their stories and photographs about their Porsche adventures. I must admit that the story and photo on pages 26 and 27 deserve an award for the best photo story I have seen in along time. As a photographer I always try to compose my photos so that they tell a story. Let me know what you think about this beautiful photo story. Please keep checking our calendar as we add more driving events. We are so blessed to have such great weather for our drive and dine events but we are also lucky to have a great social team that is always looking for new locations and fine tuning our popular annual events. A Gathering of Santa’s Helpers Peter Olliviere, Vice President
Wherever Porsches Gather, You’ll Find Charitable People On December 14, 2019, Gold Coast Region capped a year of charity giving with the “Porsche Parade of Presents”. In the spirit of the Christmas season, this event was a parade of Gold Coast member’s delivering gifts, money, and good cheer to dozens of children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, and Nicolas Children’s Hospital in Miami. The eyes of these young patiente lit up when they saw the gifts. They also had a lot of fun looking at, sitting in, and riding in the wonderful display of our members Porsches. At Joe DiMaggio about 50 Porsche driving Santa’s Helpers met for coffee, then formed a parade line, and convoyed to the hospitals.

Once there the fun began! The hospital staff brought several of the children down to the parking lot to receive gifts, and those that were unable to come down received their gifts in the hospital. Logistically the “Porsche Parade of Presents” was not difficult for the club implement, but it did require the event committee to run two widely separate events at the same time. For a first time event the “Porsche Parade of Presents” was a success that will become a standard part of the Region’s fundraising efforts in the coming years. Now that the year is over, it’s time to talk about the Region’s fund raising efforts. It has only been two years that the Region has involved itself in significant fund

raising. Prior to the current efforts we raised funds to give to charity but not in a very organized manner. Since we have made fund raising a club priority, in the past two years we have managed to raise close to $35,000.00 for charitable causes. The region’s intent is to continue this effort and to increase it even more in 2020. You can expect to see charitable funds being solicited at most Gold Coast events and we ask you to support these efforts. The goal for 2020 is $25,000, and with a membership of 3,000 people, it will only require $8.33 per person to meet this goal. So, expect to be asked, and hopefully you’ll dig deep to help fulfill the region’s objective.

We are a very active region with many types of events for our members. Events are held from the Florida Keys to and beyond our Northern Region border. When planning an event please contact the Social Chair to check for date availability. All event dates may be found in the Kassette and on the web site calendar. If an event date is canceled or needs to be changed contact the Social Chair so that the update is reflected thru all of the channels.

AUTOCROSS UPDATE Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
Thanks to all the competitors and new comers that supported our AutoX program in 2019...and of course thanks to the core group of workers that come early or stayed late to help with set-up and tear down and everything in between. Also congratulations are in order for our class winners. To be eligible for a class championship,you must attend at least 4 of our AX events and accrue more points than your competitors... Visit the GCR website to see AX events times and year end points To continue offering a world class AX program we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues and school/government parking facilities. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot which was great...big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot ...hopefully temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in” someone that has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site?...are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954 946-3196 if you can help out finding a new AX site. This year many of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. Preferably, the site should be no more that a 1 hour drive from the North Broward/South Palm Beach.. Tentative AX schedule foe 2020 Event #1 2/1/2020 @ Sebring our Club race AX challenge & only PCA member/Porsche only event. Great regional competition Event #2 2/22/2020 @ Sebring...This time on the concrete strip, Expect 8-10 runs and a track tour Event #3 Tentative March 7th or 8th @ FAU or TBA Still finalizing Details,,,Maybe a new site/ Event #4 May 16th @Sebring Last event before the Summer break...very similar to event #2,,Also prep for Zonefest AX on 5/24 Summer break Event #5 Mid September...Location TBA Event #6 October 10th @ Sebring ...Very similar to events 2 & 4 Event #7 Mid to Late November ...possibly 11/28 or 29th Location TBA possibly FAU or a surprise Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change,weather and availability and factors beyond our control News, reminders and 2020 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2020 series is planned to be 5-7 events, depending on site eligibility To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • For 2020 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

It was a fun Christmas day for fellow Porsche member Don Broschard (a.k.a. “Poppy”) of Stuart, Florida and his 6-month-old little grandson Jaxson (“Jax”), who received his first mini Porsche from his Poppy to celebrate his first Christmas. As you can see, Jax is a natural already knowing how to give the drag race signal! He will become our youngest current PCA Junior member, and no doubt will have many more awesome rides with his Poppy over the years. Welcome to the club Jax! Nice look!
