Did you blink your eyes and miss spring? Here in Florida, we only have two seasons, winter and summer—and summer is already upon us. It’s time to pull the cover off the Porsche, change the oil and get ready for the summer season of events. I’ll start with the F1 Viewing Party to be held at the Haggerty Garage. I’m excited about this season after the tight fight for the championship that we had last year. I don’t care who you were rooting for, whether Lewis Hamilton or Max Verstappen, you must admit it was a hell of a fight that ended up being tarnished by politics. We now have a new season, and the interest shifts to the technical side. The rule changes that have been implemented for this season mandated a complete redesign of the cars. Thus, every team
is starting in unknown territory, and the excitement will be to see if the cream does rise to the top. Watch the Kassette for further information about this event, which should make for exciting viewing. Do you play golf, or do you have friends that enjoy the game? If so, you need to join us on May 14th at the First Annual Charity Golf Tournament that will be held at Coral Springs Country Club in Coral Springs. We have several of our local businesses as sponsors, with the proceeds going to Memorial Hospital Foundation to support the building of the new Memorial Cancer Center. The Porsche Club’s efforts to assist in the fight against cancer might be viewed as a drop in the bucket when weighed against large corporate givers. But just remember that single drops eventually fill the bucket. Join us for a
round of golf and help us fill that bucket. And look out for Zonefest, May 27th to 29th, hosted by the Space Coast Region. As I said last month, due to Covid, it had been a couple of years since a Zonefest was held, so some of our newer members have never had a chance to experience it. Mark it on your calendar; it’s a great Porsche event and you won’t regret going. As always, keep an eye out for the information being emailed to you. Plans are being finalized for the return of what was the biggest event of last year. That’s right: The Escape to The Cape is returning for 2022. Bigger, better, and more fun! We took the lessons from last year and applied them to this year. Prepare yourself, because August will be a hot month in more ways than one. Enjoy the coming season.

It’s a wrap: On February 19th, we went to Dr. ColorChip for a tech session where attendees had the opportunity to have the product demonstrated on their vehicles. Thank you to Dr. ColorChip for hosting GCR and to Steve and Dottie Kidd for organizing this tech session. Read more about the tech session in this issue.

Last month we highlighted the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race and the enjoyment of volunteering to work at the event. Many members have contacted us about being part of the 2023 Sebring team. If you have questions about the event, please contact us and be ready to be part of the largest Porsche club race in the world. After the production of last month’s magazine our team asked the question of how we would top the articles in the March issue. While we are not competing between our articles, we always want to provide our members with entertaining and educational material. The content in this month’s issue should keep you reading from cover to cover. We start off with the Werks Reunion where
more than half of our staff attended. Our Social Chair, who injured her ankle while jogging, did not let that stop her. Christy volunteered to drive the shuttle between the parking lot and the Porsche display area. Also, the daughter of our graphic artist volunteered to be a judge in the juniors competition. Talk about being involved! At the age of 12? Not many of us got such an early start. The Werks Reunion should be on your top ten Porsche events list.
Many other great articles in this issue, including one profiling “Stan the Man”, a great friend and our longest term GCR member. Speaking of the young, I’ll add that Gold Coast held a PCA Juniors picnic that was a huge success. It was great to see how so many of our new members are getting involved with the region to help this program grow.

(It would be nice if we got one last cold front just to remind us of the great winters that we do have.) n Friday, March 4th, th Porsche Club of America held the 2022 WERKS Reunion at the Amelia River Golf Club. To say it was big, or large, would be understating the record size of the ’22 event—it was Monster! 165 Porsches on the judged field and another 585 Porsche vehicles present combined to a total of 750 vehicles registered for the event. This total does not include those who just showed up and paid for parking to enter. PCA National estimated that between 3,500 and 4,000 visitors were there for the event. Simply, it was Porsche eye-candy overload. With both PCars and attendance, the numbers set records. The judged field comprised two complete fairways of vehicles ranging from the venerable and early 356 models, through the special guest 996s (they had a special display area), and up through the latest Taycan, Cayenne, 911 and Boxster/Cayman crews. Additionally, we had modified vehicles, outlaws, and race-prepped Porsches. The special guest was a one-of-a-kind (ONE OF ONE), specially prepared 996 generation Porsche 911. This classic coupe was restored by Porsche Classic with assistance from Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, and input provided by PCA, PCNA, and Porsche AG. This 996 was an absolute stunner and it will be auctioned off next year by PCA to a Porsche Club member.
Gold Coast Region of PCA was very well represented among the large attendance. A solid estimate of GCR members would suggest that over 50 people with 25 to 30-plus Porsche vehicles made the trek from South Florida to Amelia Island, the 5-1/2-hour drive of roughly 420 miles, virtually all the way up I95, or possibly including the Florida Turnpike. Travel north on Thursday, March 3rd was hampered by a major incident on I-95 in
The 996 One of One, Spectacular the Titusville-Mims area where both north and southbound lanes of the interstate were closed due to a major accident in the southbound lane. Undeterred, everyone arrived safely albeit a few minutes later than expected. Beyond simple attendance, the Gold Coast Region placed 12 to 15-plus vehicles in the judged competition. Not at all surprisingly, three of our members came home winners. As with WERKS ’21, we were honored with a 1st Place, Blue
Ribbon win by Mr. Bruce Margulies in his 1988 911 Carrera. Our GCR members Sanket Parekh with his 1991 911 C2 and Mitch Weinberg and his 1993 RS America took Red Ribbons (2nd Place). Beyond our winners, Gold Coast was represented on the judged field by Howie Behar with his ’89 930 Turbo, Alexander Lozev in his 40th Anniversary 911 996, Phil Villegas with his ’90 Targa C2, Mark Johnson with the “Martini Cayman,” Fabio Martinez with his Blue Ribbon-winning 996 (2021 WERKS), as well as Federico Boscolo and the 1997 993 Coupe, and Adam Kravitz with his 1978 928. Every GCR vehicle in the show offered formidable competition. Of course, there were a few Porsche “stars” in attendance, such as Sara Dakarmen of LA Dismantelers, Jeff Zwart of Pikes Peak notoriety, and the famous/ infamous Magnus Walker, fashion designer and Porsche peep. Two of our members, KREZY Joe Scalia and Brandon Lee, were able to spend some time with Magnus. Great stuff; Magnus even signed a copy of Joe’s member feature, which Joe carries with him everywhere to share the story of the Kremer! Unfortunately, Brandon’s feature did not arrive in time to take to WERKS, or he would have been blessed as well! Complementing the GCR participants and attendees, our Region was also home to one special judge. Ms. Grace Hyland, 12 years old, was asked by PCA National

Sanket Parekh is shown with his 1991 Porsche 911 C2. This is a special sport purpose outlaw that was custom built. The project began in Europe in May of 2020, and the car arrived in the US just a month or so ago. Sanket is a Miami resident and GCR member since 2021. Well done. Beautiful automobile!
Bruce Margulies with his Blue Ribbon 1988 911 Carrera. He competed in the 1974-89 911/912 Class. He is the original owner of the Carrera (34 years now). Bruce lives in Cooper City and has been a GCR-PCA member since 1987. His Carrera is still showing its original paint and interior, with 147,000 miles on the ODO. This 911 has never been touched by a professional detailer, always and only by Bruce. Hearty Congrats!
Mitch Weinberg is standing tall with his Red Ribbon 1993 RS America, participating in the 964 judged group. He has owned the vehicle for 1 ½ years and is also a Cooper City resident. Of note, the RS is Mitch’s 80th Porsche! He has been a GCR PCA member since 1982 when he bought his first 911, 40 years ago. Awesome story Mitch; congrats on the award.
to perform judging duties for WERKS. She welcomed the opportunity, and according to Grace, it was a fun experience. “The Junior PCA Judges were taught how to inspect and judge each car. Once ready, we inspected five unique Porsches. The five models were a brown 914 with skis on the roof rack, an Irish Green 356 B-Coupe, a red Kelly-Moss rally 911, a blue GT3 and finally a silver 928. Each owner was there to tell the story of their car and the specs. Once the judging was complete, the Junior Judges presented the winners with their trophies on stage. (Grace is pictured with the 1st Place Winning Porsche). It was a great experience and I built up my knowledge of Porsches.” - Grace Hyland There are a ton of great stories, phenomenal people, and spectacular Porsches. The WERKS Reunion in Amelia Island is the preeminent PCA National event every year on the east coast. Plan on making the 2023 WERKS, March 3, 2023. It is a MONSTER, and one incredibly great time!

On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon at Sugar Sand Park in Boca Raton, the Gold Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America gathered at the Family Pavilion with some PCA Junior members for a day full of food, festivities, and fun. From babies and toddlers to adults and seniors, the day provided fun for kids of all ages, including some kids at heart. Called Picnic at the Park, the event took place from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm on March 6th, 2022, and was organized by Dottie Kidd. Dottie is not only the Autocross Registrar for GCR, but she’s also a member of the Social Committee, and she runs the PCA Juniors for the area. PCA Juniors started about ten years ago at the national level, and Dottie was one of the first Gold Coast region members PCA Juniors event. He was glad there was something he could do with his wife, Rebecca, and his daughter, Lilliana. Borys, who joined PCA about ten years ago and recently rejoined, was also thrilled to bring his wife, Brittany, and their two kids, Olivia and Reese, to have a little fun. Ron told us, “In the past, I did many things with PCA, like the dinners and club racing events. But that was before kids, so it was a different environment. Today’s event is kid-friendly, and it’s awesome. Having kids, you are always looking for kid-friendly things to do. Being able to combine two things you love–Porches and your kids–it’s wonderful,” and Borys was quick to agree.

There wasn’t much in the beginning,” she explained, “But now… now they have an email that goes out at the beginning of every month to the parents with children listing things that they can do. This email is brand new.” How many people work on the PCA Junior program at the national level? Just two, but that doesn’t stop the region from getting new members. Today there are over 250 Juniors signed up as part of the PCA Gold Coast Region, and more than 20 of them participated in the Picnic at the Park. Did you know that over 60 members and guests, young and old, showed up to play?
Nicky and Juan Carlos Galvez, parents to Mia and Lucas, live in the northern part of the region. Their kids are looking forward to other events. Juan Carlos tells us, “They always say, ‘Oh, I want to learn how to judge a car, and what to look for in a car.’ I think it’s really cool.” Though they didn’t have that opportunity at this event, they still had a blast.
What type of families participate in Juniors events like these? All types! Friends Borys Kedziora and Ron Potter are both Porsche owners, both members of PCA, and both had a grand time with their kids. Ron became a member of PCA in the Chicago region about 20 years ago when he owned a 944. He has participated in other PCA events, though this was his first

The day started with participants arriving at Sugar Sand Park and checking in at the Family Pavilion located near the carousel. At check-in, each child participant was given a bright green t-shirt with the PCA Juniors logo proudly displayed on it, along with a name tag to help them meet new friends in the group. Kevin Wheeler from KMW Motorsports graciously donated t-shirts. It was easy to locate the PCA participants amongst other park guests because they were wearing these bright green shirts. Breakfast and snacks were available in the tent throughout the festivities. Sweet treats included apple pastries and chocolate cake, while potato chips, cookies, and other snack foods were only an arm’s length away. For beverages, participants could choose from coffee, water, sodas, or juice boxes. When not snacking, the kids enjoyed the swings, the jungle gym, and participating in a scavenger hunt. They had an array of toys to play with, they did some fun arts and crafts, plus they made stylish visors adorned with stickers, built wooden cars, and painted pretty butterflies. It was an event-filled day, and it seemed that everyone had a great time overall. Some groups were made up of more than moms, dads, and kids. Julie Gonzalez enjoyed the day with her husband, Raul, and their kids, Haley and Alyson. But Raul’s brother, Mario (Sr.), and his wife, Lisette, could also partake. Though Mario and Lisette’s son, Mario Jr., has “junior” in his name, he’s aged out and is no longer a Junior PCA member. Even so, the three were happy to enjoy the day and volunteer at the event. Mario Sr., who has been a PCA member for about four years, said, “I love the club. I love to help out Dottie and Steve. I volunteered before on the poker run in Miami. And we’re already signed up for the Gimmick Rally on March 12th at Everglades National Park.”
who started with PCA in 2008 but has owned Porsches for more than 30 years. Kevin started with the club in Kentucky where he used to live, but he wanted to be of help at the outing–and a helper he was! Along with other members, Juan Carlos Galvez and Paul Laya, the three tended the fire at lunchtime, cooking up flavorful bratwurst, savory hotdogs, and delicious burgers for all who attended. Supportive club members, like Carolyn Ditrichs, showed up just to help clean up after the celebrating ended. At PCA, we’re always eager to accept a helping hand! Do you want to join the next PCA Junior event, but your child isn’t a member? We can fix that! Any child under the age of 18 who is registered by a current PCA member can participate in the program. That means you can register not only your sons and daughters but also your nieces and nephews, your granddaughters and grandsons, and more! Registration for PCA Juniors is free, and participants in the program receive a welcome package with an age-appropriate gift along with a PCA Juniors ID badge. Sounds pretty cool to me! Extended families also like to join in the fun. Shelly Sapp, along with husband Chad, son Wollek, and niece Leona, gleefully attended. Shelly and Chad love Porsches so much that not only have they been PCA members for over 25 years, but their son was even named after Porsche driver “Brilliant Bob” Wollek of Sebring. Though Leona’s green shirt got wet at the splash pad, that didn’t stop her from having a great time with her cousin and the other kids. Partying with PCA Juniors wasn’t all that the day had to bring. The 2021 Enthusiasts of the Year, Noemi and Nestor Sanchez, took the chance to celebrate dad Felix Penton’s 87th birthday at the park since it fell on the same day. To celebrate, a large and scrumptious sheet cake, one side chocolate and the other yellow cake, was served to all the guests. What if you don’t have kids but want to be social and help the PCA Juniors? Not a problem! Some PCA members came out just to volunteer and lend a hand. Take Kevin Jones, for example,

urning 87 years old in 2022 means you’ve been around a good long time. Having lived within the Porsche community since you were 30 equates to a sum of 57 years of “a Porsche way of life”! Stan Pearlman is that man, and he is considered the most senior living member of Gold Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America.

After a few quick years in the Big Apple, Stan moved back to Miami Beach in 1966 with his 356C. In Miami Beach, he transferred his PCA membership to the recently formed Gold Coast Region of PCA. The region was in its third year at that point but was already finding success with the many quality Porsche folks in South Florida. Walt Lohmann was President of GCR at the time. With Walt’s encouragement and that of other members, Stan improved his performance with the 356 in learning the finer points of autocross.
Born in 1935 and raised in Miami Beach, Stan graduated from Miami Beach High School in 1953. He is an accomplished athlete, having captained the MBHS football team as a quarterback in his senior year. While Beach High was small by standards at that time, they punched well above their weight limit against the larger schools in the Miami area. In his senior year, Stan played offense and defense—i.e., both ways—and was selected for the Greater Miami All-City First Team Offense and Second Team Defense by the local newspaper. By the way, he dated the captain of the cheerleader squad. They were both captains, so it worked. More about that later.

In learning about autocross, Stan found the three key attributes which were required for success: great tires, controlled speed, and experience. Tires can be purchased, but speed– being fast–is improved through practice. We expect that slalom water skiing gave Stan a great leg up on the competition. Water skiing requires hand-eye-foot coordination, balance, vision, plus anticipation and timing to get around the course quickly. These are virtually the same attributes needed to traverse an autocross course. The 356C was fast, and with the right tires and experience, the speed around the course improved.
Attending with several Gold Coast Region members Stan Pearlman traveled to Porsche Parade in 1967. The ’67 Parade was hosted by the Potomac Region in Arlington, VA. This Arlington Parade offered Stan his first experience in a Concours events. Concours would provide a challenging stationary event to complement his substantially improved driving skills in autocross.
As a first-time competitor in Concours, how did he do? No guess is necessary as Stan won first in his class with the 356C. This win set up a long and remarkable series of participations in Porsche Parade concourse events. Stan eventually traveled to fifteen Parade events and won a total of twelve times in his Porsche class. Traveling to many Parade locations and competing in both Concours and autocross, he found it necessary to carry two sets of wheel and tire setups. One set was for the Concours, and the second for the autocross. If you want to win, you must have the right equipment. Stan became GCR President in 1968, following Mr. Bob Simmons. In 1968, PCA National awarded the Gold Coast Region host duties for Porsche Parade. Walt Lohmann was Parade Chair. The event was held in Palm Beach at the Colonnades Hotel. The gala drew roughly 400 Porsche Club members and their vehicles to South Florida. At the time, this was considered a very large participation in both cars and people for a national event. As found in the Gold Coast “Condensed History,” the 1968 Parade was entitled “SONNEFEST,” which translates to “Festival in the Sun.” Of course, it rained the entire week of Parade, and the event gathered up a second moniker; “Soggyfest”. With Walt leading the Parade team, and Stan as President, the club of 100 members we able to host a successful event despite the three days of continuous hard rain. It was quite the accomplishment

Stan with the 1972 2.8L 911 for a small region. At the end of a very successful year, Stan handed the president’s gavel to Lee Wood (Die Porsche Kassette, “FINDING GOLD,” December 2021). As the years progressed, Stan acquired, sold, and drove a total of eight different Porsche automobiles. Each was driven with great skill, speed, and properly maintained, which was essential for those Concours wins. Beyond the 356C, he had a 1967 911S, a 1972 911T (later to become a 1972 2.8L 911), and his favorite, a 2005 997 Carrera S. This 997 Carrera S was a winner in every aspect. The 2010 Parade was held in St. Charles, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. Stan, his son Ron, and grandson Max each competed in autocross using Stan’s 997 in the P11 Class. As skill would have it, the Pearlman boys swept the podium for the class each driving the Carrera S. Son Ron took the top spot (1st), Stan held 2nd, and grandson Max took 3rd! Now get this: the total time difference between between 1st and 3rd place was 1.7 seconds. We should also note that this was Max’s first national autocross event at 18 years old. It is obvious that speed and carhandling abilities run in the family. Stan’s 997S wasn’t only a speed merchant, it was also Concours worthy. The Pearlman Carrera took 2nd in Class at the St. Charles Parade Concours. Additionally, the Carrera S took 1st Place at the Hershey, PA Parade Concours (2005) and 1st Place at the Charlotte Parade Concours (2008). Stan and the 997-911S were given an unofficial title of “The Fastest Parade Concours Winner” because of his excellence and winning ways with both
Porsche disciplines at the many parade events he attended. When not enjoying the Porsche lifestyle, Stan’s daily work efforts were centered around the communications industry. During the time in Miami Beach and three individual work sessions in New York City his employment related to resort and travel advertising. Stan worked at times for Gannett Newspapers, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and others in Resort & Travel, and Liquor Division advertising. It was an interesting career which allowed him time to enjoy the Porsche camaraderie. Although it wasn’t exclusively limited to advertising, sales, and marketing. Much of Stan “The Man” Pearlman’s success in autocross with his various Porsche autos could be attributed to the knowledge and efforts of a very good friend and highly respected Porsche technician, Butch Stokes. Starting with the ’67 911S and for every Porsche that followed it was Butch Stokes who kept the cars in top condition. According to Stan, if there was ever any kind of problem, Butch knew how to solve it. Stan partnered up with Butch and together they owned and operated a Porsche repair and tuning shop. The operation was a success for quite some time, until they moved on to other opportunities. The reader may remember that it was Butch Stokes who performed the service and engine repair work and servicing that brought the KREZY Kremer back to life. neighborhood. They also attend local events, concerts, and enjoy sharing time with neighbors in the area.
Stan at home in the Trophy Room, with the Bay Bottom Crawl 4-footer, and several other awards. Stan has two children from his first marriage: a son, Ron, and a daughter, Jill. After a short time together, they divorced. Ron and Jill were raised in southern California by their mother, and both still reside in the Golden State. His second marriage to wife Neida was a perfect union. They spent 51 years together. Neida enjoyed the Porsche experience as much as Stan and was involved with all things Porsche for their time together. Neida was successful in her own right in working up the corporate ladder with companies such as Macy’s and Bergdorf Goodman. Her success kept her quite busy, and her love an appreciation for Stan’s Porsche passion allowed him to pursue much of the PCar fun for their time together. Unfortunately, Neida passed in 2014, and Stan’s personal life changed yet again. Attending a Miami Beach HS class reunion a couple of years later Stan inquired with a few fellow classmates about that cheerleader captain, his high school flame, Ms. Judy (Lewis) Bernstein. Judy was not in attendance that year, but at the insistence of several friends she attended the following year and she and Stan became reacquainted. Their high school infatuation was rekindled. Today, Stan and Judy live in her home in Palm Beach Gardens, part of the PGA National golf development. They are active in the community. The planned community allows for great bike riding. Every morning Judy and Stan get great exercise by pedaling around the

Visiting their home in Palm Beach Gardens is a treat. On the day of our visit, Judy was entertaining a few lady friends while Stan shared his passion for all things Porsche in their TV/Rec room. The room is full of trophies filling two bookcases. Yes, there are multiple autocross and concours accolades, but also a very large volume of tennis trophies won by Judy. Their shared enthusiasm for athletics and a healthy lifestyle has afforded their excelling at all they have touched. While Ms. Judy’s awards for tennis rival Stan’s for his Porsche accomplishments, the physical size of the trophies are a bit different. One of his awards is huge. It generates multiple questions as to what Stan might have accomplished to acquire a four-foot tall, twenty-five-pound trophy. To say it is a BIG trophy would be an understatement. For many years, the Gold Coast Region held a major autocross event in Key West. This autocross was called the Bay Bottom Crawl. The Bay Bottom Crawl drew a substantial volume of skilled drivers each year, in many varied vehicles, not exclusively Porsches. The Crawl awards included this monstrous perpetual trophy. Each year the winner’s name would be engraved on a plaque at the base of the four-posted, big cup, with a winged spirit holding a laurel wreath on top. Win the Bay Bottom Crawl three times and take the trophy home on a permanent basis! Stan Pearlman had won twice, back-to-back in 1968-69. However, Stan had competition in the form of Mr. Harry Heinl in his Ford GT40: Harry won in 1970 and 1972. This was a REAL GT40, driven by Mr. Heinl to compete in the Bay Bottom Crawl. If either of these two won again, the trophy would go to a permanent home. (“Google” Harry Heinl GT40 if you wish.)
two-year period of 1978-79. Those were productive years for our region. Ms. Judy is not a car person, unfortunately. Stan has adjusted his life to match this lovely person. A few years ago, he sold his last Porsche, a 2002 996 Carrera. That car won 1st in Class in the San Diego Parade autocross, and 1st in Class at the Ft. Worth Parade Concours de Elegance in keeping with Stan’s long history of excellence. As local traffic increased along with the Mark Johnson chances for a vehicle accident or incident, he decided to “retire” from driving his favored marque. He could not bear the thought of having such a beautiful car simply sit in the garage, or worse, being wrecked by an inattentive driver. Stan lived the “built to be driven” nature of Porsche. So, rather than not drive the Carrera, he sold it. Today, he still wheels around in a “turbo,” but the vehicle is a non-Porsche brand when he drives. Ultimately, Stan and Judy spend a couple hours each day riding around their neighborhood for relaxation, and to stay fit. They both are in super shape and the bicycles keep both physically active and allow them to find a mutually rewarding physical activity, as water skiing is no longer an option. Stan remains a member or PCA Gold Coast Region. He is no longer active, but he enjoys reading the region’s news in Die Porsche Kassette. Several back issues are kept on the end table next to his seat, and he reads them cover to cover. In visiting with Stan, the stories, photos, trophies, and glorious memories never stop. To put it simply, he’s probably forgotten more about what he’s done with Porsche automobiles than most all of us have ever done with ours. Stan Pearlman has lived the Porsche way of life. We should all be so fortunate.
The headline of the newspaper article stated: “PORSCHE WINS BAY BOTTOM CRAWL.” Stan Pearlman beat Harry Heinl in the GT40 by 0.1 seconds over the challenging autocross course that ran roughly two minutes in length. The four-foot-tall, twenty-five-pound ornate Bay Bottom Crawl trophy is sitting in Stan Pearlman’s TV room, having been permanently retired in 1973. In addition to his role as GCR President in 1968, Stan also held the role for the

GCR Tech Session Christy Spangler, Social Chair
D
riving South Florida roads means driving in many construction zones. It also means that Porsche drivers are subject to many road hazards, and the opportunity for paint nicks and chips frequently occurring on the front of your car, damaging the good looks of that beautiful frunk lid! To combat the nicks and dings, Gold Coast Region held our first tech session in a couple of years at Dr. ColorChip. We traversed I-95 north—and some of those construction zones—on Saturday, February 19th for the session. GCR had a super turnout with 21 Porsches and 42 members in attendance. The session started with a nice lunch catered by Chick-fil-A which gave us time to socialize and meet Dan McCool, President, and the staff of Dr. ColorChip. Dan provided an overview of their system and how the company came into existence. Dr. ColorChip is a high-quality vehicle paint touch-up company. They are the industry leader in the niche automotive touch-up industry and their global headquarters facility sits just a bit north in Lake Park, FL. They have developed a process to easily touch-up chips in the paint on your car. Additionally, they formulate the paint to auto manufacturer’s specifications there at this facility. The color match is simply perfect. The formal tech session started with dividing us into two groups for two different presentations. Using Steve Kidd’s 944, Joe Monachello demonstrated the Dr. ColorChip process to the first group. Joe demonstrated how to apply the touch up paint. They mixed the Baltic Blue color on the spot that blended right into the finish of Steve’s 944. The second group saw the blending process used to get the exact paint match as demonstrated, by Tony Pando. Nestor Sanchez has used Dr. ColorChip on his Racing Yellow Porsche. As Nestor had some questions about application, they had him drive his 911 into the shop. Once inside, the Dr. ColorChip professionals did another hands-on demonstration for the application of the product. The process is simple, the paint matched perfectly, and Nestor and Noemi’s Porsche showed like new as the Dr. ColorChip touch-ups blended perfectly, as expected. Following the demonstrations, Dr. ColorChip offered specials on their products and had a raffle and goddie bags for attendees. Two guys walk into a bar one day… …sounds like the opening line to a joke, right? Well, what happened at that coffee bar in early 2012 in St. Pete was an idea that sparked a great endeavor! Let me tell you about it. Those two guys were PCA Club members and they got to talking about the recent passing of an Indy Car great: Dan Wheldon, who had been a resident of the Tampa Bay area. Miles Frantz, the first one to arrive at the coffee bar, told Page Obenshain, who met him there, that they should do something to honor Dan. He said: “Why don’t we organize a Kart race so we can generate some funds and then donate them to John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital” It was one of Dan and Susie Wheldon’s favorite charities. The idea was to organize a Pro-Am Race where a Pro driver would share his seat with some amateur racers who would pay a fee to drive.Page loved the idea, accepted the challenge, and ran with it. For the first event they had less than six weeks to do it. Immediately Page contacted two people: Patrick Long and Dave Bassett. He asked Patrick, who was a Tampa Bay resident at the time, if he could help put together the group of Pros, and Dave to see if he would help in the organization. They both liked the idea and agreed to help. Patrick (the only American Porsche factory driver) went to work recruiting drivers for the event and Dave knew the people at Andersen Park. Initially Andersen was a vendor and Page set out to find some sponsors, one of which, Bert Smith Porsche, covered the cost of renting the track. The event, which was run at Andersen Race Park in Palmetto, FL raised $6,400 for All Children’s and everyone was ecstatic. Originally the event was a PCA event since every member of the organizing committee was a PCA member, but PCA later decided not to insure Kart races so the group made it an independent entity: Kart 4 Kids, Inc 501(c)3.

The first events were organized right after the 12 Hours of Sebring so it would be easier to get the Pro drivers. Eventually, the event was moved to the week before the Indy Car Grand Prix of St. Pete and the Grand Prix allowed K4K to come to the track. Because of Covid-19 the event was moved back to Andersen, a change which helped to cut expenses and raise the donation total because Andersen Park now became a sponsor and donated the track with karts and personnel for the event. After the second year All Children’s Hospital asked the organizers of Kart 4 Kids what their goals were. K4K said: “We want to become the primary fund raiser for the hospital.” That was after a $6,400 donation in 2012 and a $13,000 donation that year (2013). There has been a long list of Pro drivers who have participated in K4K. At one time five winners of the Indy-500 were racing together at K4K. There have also been winners of the 12 Hours of Sebring, 24 Hours of Daytona, 24 Hours of Le Mans and just about from every important race in the world. Drivers from all of the big automotive racing series have been giving of their time by leading a team and also help K4K by donating signed memorabilia which gets auctioned, and this accounts for a good portion of the donation to All Children’s. After Pat Long moved to California, another Tampa Bay resident, Sebastien Bourdais (IMSA, Champ Car, Indy Car & Le Mans Champion / F1 Driver, etc., etc.), stepped in to run the Pro driver recruitment and more, as the Event Chairman. Other changes came to be for 2022 as well. Page and Dave became Co-Chairs and Chris Russick took the helm as K4K President.
The bidding continues and again slows down after a minute or so. Again Alex interjects: “I forgot to tell you that it’s a complete set! I’ll include the boots and gloves, all signed” Some more bids come in and when the bidding finally stalls at $16,000, the two gentlemen that had been outbidding each other, would raise their bids no more. There was silence and neither one twitched nor hinted to raise again. Then, again Alex says: “You know what, I’ll throw in another complete Championship-winning driver’s suit so both of these bidders can get what they want (and just like that K4K doubled the income from that donation ($32,000) which brought everyone there to loudly cheer and clap. I was honored and very happy to be asked to join the K4K Committee this year. Since it’s inception I had wanted to be involved, but because I lived in Fort Lauderdale it was difficult. Now that I’m a Tampa Bay Area resident, I’m all-in! Karting for me is part of my DNA. I grew up racing them, and into adulthood, so there was no way I wouldn’t get involved because even though we are all having a great time at the event, mingling with such great racing talent and all of the volunteers who are good friends, we’re also able to give back to the community and support All Children’s Hospital.
I also watched as some of the more tenured drivers, such as Scott Dixon, who quietly but wisely kept outbidding the younger drivers time and time again in order to raise the amount of money collected from the auction.
This year’s event (2022) donated to John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital the sum of $300,000, which makes the total accumulated donation $1,350,000!
After the day’s races are over, the event moves under the tent, where the auctions (silent and not-so-silent) take place. Drivers, sponsors, members and anyone who wants can donate memorabilia to be auctioned. This year, Alex Palou (2021 Indy Car Series Champion) donated one of his ’21 Championshipwinning driving suits. The bidding starts and when it halts a bit, he interjects and says: “I didn’t wash it! That must make it more valuable, No?”
K4K now has become the primary fund raiser for the hospital as was the goal all along. We have been blessed with so many wonderful volunteers and donors who make this a fantastic event.
