Q

What is concierge medicine?

Concierge medicine is often referred to as “Old-School Medicine.” It is a return to the medical relationship of yesteryear, a period when your physician had the time to get to know you as a person and became a vital part of your family. Concierge medical models vary, but most share the common theme of care provided by one physician with limited enrollment numbers and availability around the clock. Much like fitness facilities and country clubs, concierge physicians do oblige some form of an annual enrollment fee.

home is more than just a shelter: Homes are the most important buildings in our lives. We believe all buildings should be “green”— especially homes. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) homes are built to be the healthy, green homes we desire, providing clean indoor air and incorporating safe building materials to ensure a comfortable home. Using less energy and water means lower utility bills each month. In many markets, certified green homes sell faster and at higher prices than comparable non-green homes. Our feature story on a local couple and their journey designing a new LEED home will introduce you to some local talent responsible for this extraordinary home in one of our upscale communities. See the story on page 50. In addition to our top LEED home, we also showcase our gated communities that are changing how clubs accommodate the wants of new homebuyers. Many buyers from the Fort Lauderdale area want new amenities such as spas, hair salons, Pilates and children’s play areas. After visiting club after club in the area three years ago, I started noticing changes and upgrades in many of them. Our “Before and After” photos took months to gather, and we hope you visit one of the clubs and see the changes for yourself. Something new this year is our “Faces of Design.” We created this profile section for local designers, builders, architects and professional in many different trades to help tell their stories and showcase their work. These professionals are the best at their trade, so consider visiting one of these outstanding pros for your future projects. We hope you enjoy this issue, and please always remember to send us your profile suggestions and story ideas. I cherish each and every story. Enjoy your month of March, and may good luck be with you wherever you go!

Stevie Alexandria Platt & James Thomas Martin By Melissa Puppo WHAT THEY DO: Stevie, 26, works in marketing and operations for a local transportation company, and James, 26, is the commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter IBIS in Fort Pierce. HOW THEY MET: Stevie and James come from rival high schools— Stevie attended Martin County High School and James went to South Fork High School. They would see each other when their schools co-hosted cross country summer conditioning practices, and they had mutual friends, so Stevie added James on Facebook. He later reached out to her, and after talking for a few weeks they went on their first date in downtown Stuart. “The rest, as they say, is history,” Stevie says. HOW THEY KNEW THEY’D MET THE ONE: The two dated in high school and spent time together after school and on weekends. And while they broke up before leaving for college, a few years later Stevie was passing by James’ duty station in Jacksonville, and they agreed to meet up for dinner. “Right before I left, he gave me a bundle of love letters he had written throughout the past few years,” Stevie remembers. “The letters put all of the feelings that began in high school and never left into words, and I knew that it wasn’t a question of if I should give it another shot, but when. It was the most romantic thing anyone had ever done for me.” ON THE PROPOSAL: At the time, Stevie and James were living

apart from one another in different cities, so they planned a long weekend together back in their hometown. James picked her up at the

airport and they drove to his parents’ house. Once they arrived, they climbed into the tree house in the backyard. “The tree house has our names engraved in it from 2010, and it was the spot of our first kiss in high school,” Stevie says. “It’s always been a special place to us.” As they reached the top, endless Christmas lights turned on and a crate with a golden retriever puppy sleeping inside was on a platform with a sign that read, “Will you be my mommy?” James then proposed. “How could I say no with a ring and a puppy?” she asks. ON THE THEME: The couple planned a tasteful, nautical-themed

wedding with colors of navy and gold. Table centerpieces featured vases wrapped in nautical rope and tied with a forever knot with simple white hydrangeas accompanied by painted oyster shells (leftovers from years of shucking their own) and gold votive candles. Twinkle lights adorned the entire room.

ON THE SPECIAL DETAILS: Military weddings can incorporate a

saber arch when the bride and groom leave the church. During James and Stevie’s wedding, all of the military members in uniform lined up while James’ uncle directed the commands. As the couple walked through the arch, they shared a kiss before stepping through. “As we kissed, I received the shock of my life,” Stevie recalls, “when I was slapped on the butt with one of the swords and all the groomsmen yelled, ‘Welcome to the Coast Guard!’”

THE TALK:HOUSE

L

ocated on Dixie Highway in the building that once housed Courtine’s, The Talk:house offers new American cuisine in a modern, casual setting. The old space was extensively renovated—additions include a large paved patio area with ample seating for alfresco dining, a stylish interior with sliding barn doors and a large bar area with high-top tables, where singer-pianist Bobby Gangloff entertains on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Though the menu still has a few items remaining from the Courtine’s days (such as the popular burgers), chef-owner David Van Stolk has updated most of the food selections. Included is an array of appetizers, from a classic shrimp cocktail, to fried green tomatoes topped with pimento cheese and bacon, to beef or salmon carpaccio. On a friend’s recommendation, my husband and I tried the over-sized meatball, a flavorful blend of beef, pork and veal served with marinara sauce and

house-made ricotta cheese. We also sampled the crunchy coconut shrimp, which were coated with panko crumbs, deep-fried and served on plantain slices— it’s a winning combination of flavor and texture. Also notable is the complimentary bread basket; The Talk:house’s version includes an assortment of exceptionally warm and crusty rolls. Entrée offerings include six different burgers, a variety of seafood, several pasta dishes and a large selection of meats. We ordered the grilled veal chop served with a pinot noir sauce, farro and asparagus, and the New Zealand rack of lamb, which comes with a cabernet sauce and smashed potatoes. For dessert, we indulged in the Apple Galette, served warm with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. It was worth every calorie. Service here is top-notch; our waitress was friendly and professional. I’m already looking forward to my next trip back to The Talk:house, which will undoubtedly be soon.

A Family Affair Lee Tilton of Tilton & Tilton Law in downtown Jensen Beach has roots that run deeper than the pineapple plants that once flourished in the city. The great-grandson of an original Martin County commissioner, Tilton’s partner is his 94-year-old grandfather. By Amy Woods Photography by Lindsey Potter

H

e wanted to become a lawyer so passionately that he put himself through four years of night school while working a full-time job and raising two children. Now, the 34-year-old counsel who owns Tilton & Tilton Law spends extra hours in the office to carry on the legacy of the first firm to open in Jensen Beach. “We have files going back quite a ways,” says Lee Tilton, referring to a client base three generations deep. “We stay extremely busy, and that’s how we prefer it.” Tilton & Tilton Law was established in the 1960s by C. Norris Tilton, who at age 94 remains active with the Florida Bar and still consults with clients. The grandfather-grandson operation provides legal services related to real estate, trusts and wills. “He has more of a relaxed role, not seeing as many clients as before,” Lee Tilton says of his partner. “He’s still keeping things going and staying sharp, more power to him.” The family’s ties to the Treasure Coast date to the early 20th century, when Warner “Pop” Tilton, Lee Tilton’s great-grandfather, pioneered the Martin County of today. The Navy pilotturned-statesman trekked to Tallahassee in 1925 to have then-Gov. John Martin sign documents incorporating the area, leading him to a term on the initial board of county commissioners. The elder also founded the debut bank in Jensen Beach and started the Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce. “He had his hand in many different organizations,” Lee Tilton says. “He was looking for new opportunities in an undeveloped area, took notice and saw the possibilities.”

MARCH 2019

Tilton & Tilton Law’s location on Northeast Ricou Terrace sits next to the now-closed Inn at Tilton Place, an old Florida home where C. Norris Tilton was born. “I am very proud of my family and to be a part of the history of this great city,” Lee Tilton says. “There’s really not that same friendly atmosphere anywhere that Jensen Beach has.” How does it feel to be Jensen Beach royalty?

Ha, ha! I don’t know about royalty, but it is an honor and humbling to be part of a family that has significant accomplishments and contributions in our community.

To what do you attribute the success of the firm?

The feedback we get from clients is very positive. I owe that to my grandfather setting

such an excellent example as an attorney for me to follow. What does the future look like for Tilton & Tilton Law?

Possibly a new office in Stuart, but the Jensen Beach office always is going to be central to our existence. We have clients who walk in, colleagues who walk in, and we do our best to make ourselves available. It is an open-door policy that has always been with the firm. Where can you be found when you are not working?

[My wife] Claudia, [daughter] Layla, [son] Allan and I love to visit Disney and the Keys as often as our schedule permits. However, there is no place like home. Frequently, we can be found going to the local movie theater and visiting our favorite restaurants.

Our Patients are Our Greatest Advocates!

Kathleen “Kate” / Patient since 2016 Kathleen, or “Kate” as her friends call her, has been a patient with the Visiting Nurse Association of Florida (VNA) for over 3 years. Originally from New York City, she grew up acting and performing in the city’s theaters. It was while walking through the city that she first felt a sharp pain in her leg. The following morning, she awoke to find that her leg was bright red. Having previously had knee replacement surgery, Kate thought her pain was directly related to her knee implant, but the next day when the other leg started to show the same symptoms she knew it was something else. Eventually, she decided to relocate to Florida to be closer to her family and get her health back under control. Ultimately, she underwent 21 different surgeries to try to alleviate her symptoms. While she healed, she employed the home health care services of the VNA. Now, over three years later, Kate has employed many home health care services offered by the VNA, including physical and occupational therapies, IV therapy, wound care, lymphedema care, and home health aides. She has used both Medicare and private insurance to cover the costs associated with her home health care. Currently, she receives in-home nursing services from Colleen, an LPN who has worked with the VNA for several years. Colleen is special because she is certified in several areas. In addition to being an LPN, she is certified in IV therapy and Lymphedema Therapy. She is also a Physical Therapy Assistant.

“Everyone at the VNA goes above and beyond to make their patients feel like more than just a number,” says Kate.

Not only does Colleen provide superior medical care for Kate, she also provides companionship. During home visits, the two can often be found talking about the latest movie releases, area restaurants, or what they did over the weekend. Colleen also provides moral support for Kate when she’s feeling overwhelmed. “I can tell when Kate is feeling down and I will bring her flowers or balloons to cheer her up,” said Colleen. “No matter what, I want her to start her day off with a smile.” Because Kate’s condition is difficult to treat, she is frequently admitted to the hospital. In fact, she has spent 436 days in the hospital over the past three years. She says she finds the VNA’s Admissions Coordinators very helpful.

“I love that the VNA has Admissions Coordinators in the hospitals. They are always efficient and nice. They make it very simple to setup my home care.” Recently her aunt had hip replacement surgery and Kate knew right away which home health agency to recommend. “The VNA, definitely. They do a great job!”

For more information or to request services from the VNA, call 772-210-1337 or visit www.vnaflorida.org

Pressing The Importance of Clean Waterways Whether in the halls of Congress in Washington, D.C., or in the classroom of an elementary school in Stuart, Mark Perry champions the cause of the Florida Oceanographic Society. By Amy Woods | Photography by Lindsey Potter

T

he angler, diver and surfer who grew up in Stuart and fell in love with the water celebrates his 41st anniversary this month as executive director of the Florida Oceanographic Society. “It has been a long process, a long road,” Mark Perry says. “It’s good, though, all good.” Perry, who also celebrates his 67th birthday this month, shows no signs of stopping. An avid environmentalist and tireless advocate, he is on the cusp of completing a capital campaign that will bring a new building and exhibit hall to the society’s coastal center on Hutchinson Island. He continues to push for the funding of crucial restoration projects involving oyster reefs and seagrasses. “I want to see these accomplishments before I pass the baton,” he says. “I’m running the relay, so I’ve got to pass the baton on to the next person to run the next leg of the relay, but I can’t tell you exactly when.” Perry grabbed the reins of the non-profit from his father, Clifton Perry, and Sailfish Point developer James Rand, two of its founding board members. “I rebuilt the organization,” he says. “I began writing grants to get things going. I felt

28

MARCH 2019

like it was going to be dissolved and slip away, and I said, ‘No, it can’t.’ It was in the absolutely perfect area.” The Indian River Lagoon is the most biodiverse estuary in the country, nurturing more than 4,300 species of flora and fauna. Recurring blue-green algae blooms have threatened the delicate habitat. “Why are we continuing to get bluegreen algae blooms, and how can we stop and prevent them?” Perry asks. “People are very, very interested in that. There’s more awareness now of Florida’s water pollution than there ever was before. I just think that’s what makes you feel like you’re accomplishing something.” He has testified before the U.S. Senate about the issue and frequently speaks to civic groups, local officials and schools, pressing the importance of clean waterways. “It is critical to our state,” Perry says. “We’ve got to get back to working with Mother Nature.” What is the most difficult thing about your job?

Probably the most difficult thing is

maintaining communications with all parties on all aspects of my work and the continuing education of our state and federal leadership on the issues facing Florida’s waters. What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

Seeing progress on preventing pollution to our waters and restoring habitat in the estuary. Also, watching young visitors in our education programs and at the coastal center become inspired to be stewards of Florida’s coastal ecosystems. What is next for the Florida Oceanographic Society?

We see 64,000 visitors a year. When we are built out, we hope to see 100,000 visitors. What is next for you?

It’s my responsibility to be an advocate to the point where I want to fulfill our mission. Sometimes, it’s hard to know if you’ve done any good, but then, finally, you start to realize there’s some progress. I know I can’t do it all as executive director, but by educating people every day, we might be able to.

lorida’s inlets are vital to the health of our ecological community. They provide replenishment of clean, fresh ocean water. The inlets are living, breathing entities and ways for the oceans to breach into our shallow water community. But for our purposes as anglers, inlets provide constant change. Most of the inlets near the ocean access bottleneck at some point. This forces strong currents and rushing tidal waters, then the waters recede for a transformation. The sand, seagrass and mangroves act as a nursery for fish and birds to live among the most diverse ecological systems on earth. The clean waters produce an oxygen-rich environment and thus an abundance of opportunities to catch a variety of fish. The bait fish are ample, and the catch can be bountiful. The salinity is always in flux, and the sand is constantly removed and replaced. The only downside to our inlets is their popularity. For one, they are the main access points to our deeper Atlantic waters. That means a concert of continuous inboard and outboard boat engines. So, be mindful of the times you fish. I prefer the off times when boat traffic seems to be at a minimum. Another good rule of thumb is that as much as the water changes, so do the species of spawning fish. Whether using artificial or live bait, cast a lot and do it as if your standing on a clock face. With each cast, I like to think of my movements like clock hands. I’ll begin at a positioning of one o’clock, then two o’clock and so forth, so as to not cast in the same spot each time. At some point, you will fish in an area where the action just doesn’t stop. It’s fishing the inlets after all—you can never go wrong.

recently showed a stunning $10 million beach-front estate. While the design was not one I would select, I could appreciate its aesthetics. What I did not appreciate, however, was its builder’s grade, entry-level white appliances. In truth, even most tract builders are using higher-end appliances than what was in this home. It was a disappointment equally noted by my buyers. Our shared disdain was largely because we expected more from a custom home. So what kind of appliances would one expect to see in a luxury home? The best of the best include Viking, Thermador, Gaggenau, Miele, Sub-Zero, Wolf and La Cornue. Viking, responsible for the first professional range in the U.S., is best known for its stainless steel cooking line but offers other appliances. Thermador is one of the more affordable luxury brands and its strengths lie in refrigeration and cooking. Gaggenau, founded in Germany in the 1600s, offers city-chic, industrial style and incredible function. This style and performance comes at a price higher than that of the first two lines mentioned. Miele garnered respect for its products with incredibly reliable dishwashers and laundry machines, and has moved into being competitive with its cooking line. Sub-zero, with two-compressor performance, air scrubbers, vacuum seals and water purifiers, is the standard that all other refrigeration units are measured against. Its sister line, Wolf, is a heavy hitter for cooking, with dual convection technology. Embodying all that is luxury is La Cornue, which only makes custom, hand-crafted cooking products in France set at prices higher than some homes. One look at any of these brands and you will understand the statements they make in a luxury home. They are a thing of beauty, pushing at the emotions much as fine art does, and when their presence is expected, their absence has an opposite effect.

ed décor. The 7,000-square-foot infinity edge pool has its own divine design that incorporates “island pods” where a special sunset dinner can be organized—perfect for a romantic trip. The staff is exceptionally friendly, yet not intrusive—eager to please guests. The resort is stunning, but with low-key elegance, allowing guests to ensconce themselves into the rhythm of the island. The archipelago is comprised of 40 islands and cays that lie at the southeast end of the Bahamas chain, 575 miles southeast of Miami. In 2017, Hurricane Irma devastated the area with its slowmoving Category 5 winds of more than 200 mph. This boutique resort not only survived but also thrived—the property’s oceanfront villas were completed this past December. Each villa has its own outdoor fire pit lounge area and private oceanfront infinity pool with an optional private chef. This posh boutique property is a mix of Caribbean aura and contemporary lush surroundings that are not only resilient but also luxurious and make for a true getaway. t seems today that everybody wants to save the world. And who can blame us? Environmental awareness—and warnings—has reached an apex. We’re all cognizant of our impacts on the planet and we’re willing to minimize them. But how? Amid the noise of pious politicians and sermonizing celebrities, the public is left to decipher how best to actually, practically make a meaningful difference for the environment in daily life. Fortunately, Anthony and Suzanne Kissling committed to this very goal when constructing their Palm City home. Their handpicked team of local professionals—largely new to the intricacies such an undertaking entailed—each contributed in ways subtle and overt to easing the eco impacts. The results: a home that preserves energy and water while also prolonging elegance, style and comfort, earning the literal gold-standard of green building. The Kisslings’ home in the Floridian is the first residential property in Martin County to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. Some of the comprehensive requirements for LEED Gold (rankings include Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum) remain beyond reach for many homeowners. But not so for a number of the practices, techniques and innovations involved. Many, team leaders share, are readily available. Even if an official certification isn’t, a cleaner, greener conscience still is. Such is the trend the Kisslings hope to influence. “It’s about that ripple effect,” Suzanne Kissling says.

CLEAR VISION Longtime friends, colleagues and co-collaborators on countless past projects, interior designer Dianne Davant and landscape architect Tom Lucido share the same philosophy on client services. “We aim to make their vision come to life,” Lucido says. “They had a vision of building a totally sustainable home. We were approached at the getgo knowing that we had to do a lot of research to effectively navigate the process.” Such navigation requires a guide. Enter Kyle and Harmony Abney, who own the Palm Citybased green building consulting firm Abney + Abney Green Solutions. Whether serving as an independent contractor on behalf of the architect, the builder or the homeowner, Green Solutions bears the credentials to score points and provide thirdparty verification for LEED certification—the internationally recognized standard for green building authentication.

That’s because of the five fundamental factors that determine green buildings, material generation and usage is essential. It encompasses the amount of waste diverted from landfills, the number of recycled and repurposed goods, even the distance involved in transportation—the shorter the better for diminishing travel-related carbon production. Expected requirements include increased energy efficiency and limited water consumption. Perhaps surprising, under the category of indoorenvironmental quality, are scoring opportunities for enhanced storage of any chemicals in the garage that could compromise air quality. But the first phase is site location and preparation.

CARROTS AND THE OCCASIONAL STICK While Delray Beach and Miami Beach institute various LEED requirements—with Miami Beach mandating LEED Gold for any project over 7,000 square feet—most municipalities adopt the incentive approach. Complaint applicants might enjoy expedited reviews or reduced permit costs. The industry is still warming to the value of LEED construction. So the Abneys—who generally rate commercial or multifamily residential projects—face frequent commutes south. “We don’t have a lot of work in Martin or on the Treasure Coast,” says Kyle Abney, a third-generation contractor and builder who studied green building in college. “Most is in Miami or Fort Lauderdale.” Grateful for the gridlock respite, the Palm City resident’s proximity to the Kissling home may not have counted toward satisfying the letter of any LEED requirements, but it certainly honored the spirit.

gulfstreammediagroup.com

TURNING DIRT “It starts from the ground up—literally,” Lucido says. “How the site is graded, even the drainage, makes a difference in ensuring proper usage and management of environmental resources.” Despite extensive experience in landscape architecture, Paul Goulas, senior project designer with Lucido & Associates, never before pursued LEED certification on a residential project. Nevertheless, he embraced the opportunity. “He was really into it and proud of the stuff he was incorporating,” Kyle Abney remembers. Goulas zeroed in on water management— minimizing outputs and maximizing benefits. “Water is a big concern when it comes to LEED certification and plant consumption,” Goulas says. “Most of the plants are either native or lowwater usage. We did do irrigation—but it’s all drip, so there are no spray heads. Given the plants that we used, it’s easily 50 to 75 percent less water usage than an average residential system. Once the plants get established, the irrigation system would probably barely even need to run.” The drought-tolerant native landscaping rated high. Knowing sod’s insatiable thirst, Goulas eschewed grass altogether. In fact, the only turf onsite is artificial for two putting greens. For the hardscaping, even a detail as seemingly inconsequential as color boosted the rating, Kyle Abney explains. “The driveway and the more dark, hard surfaces are heat sinks,” he says. “The lighter the color, the better. The pavers had recycled content and were locally produced.” The recycled content involved little pavement, Goulas says. “Most of it was synthetic,” he adds. “Basically, everything but the house was pretty much pervious.” FOAM SWEET HOME The emphasis on energy efficiency was poured, literally, into the construction process. With Peter and Maria Stromberg of GarciaStromberg serving as the architects, Bill Daly, vice president for the Hobe

Sound-based Carrere General Contractors, was the project manager. Daly added the spray foam insulation icynene into the concrete-block construction. Often used in attics and not uncommon in the walls of high-end homes, icynene improves overall energy efficiently. High-performance windows added insulation, reducing heat loss (and electric bills). The extra fortification offered additional benefits, Kyle Abney notes. “It was a concrete block that was locally produced, but there’s also a durability element,” he says. “The longer something lasts, the less you have to replace it and throw it out.” CLAIMING FUTURE BY RECLAIMING PAST Items reused rather than discarded weigh favorably, too. “There was lots of reclaimed wood, including reclaimed cypress in the mantle,” Kyle Abney says. Crediting Jefferson Woodworking of Palm City for much of the sourcing, Suzanne Kissling also cited reclaimed heart pine composing ample flooring and Spanish porcelain, a sustainable source, throughout the first floor. “Everybody had to think, ‘Well, if we did it this way, we could get two points,’” she recalls. “So it was fun. Everybody was involved.” Points accrued around every imaginable detail, from the strength and applications of sealants to the paints devoid of volatile organic compounds. OUTER AND INNER BEAUTY Meanwhile, Lucido and Davant ensured the look and feel of the exterior flowed naturally inside the home. “We collaborated with Dianne and her team to make sure the materials related well when you walk into the entrance of the home,” Lucido says. Davant invited the outer beauty in, with living room doors pocketing away to accentuate views of the zero-edge pool and St. Lucie River. “They wanted to feel like they were part of the river,” she says. For overall style, the Kisslings sought “something very different and avant-garde,” Davant says. “It’s a warm contemporary,” adds Priscilla Hyatt Councill, an interior designer with Davant & Associates who played a key role in the effort. The only energy the home overflows with is the positive kind, thanks to the atmosphere Lucido and Davant created. Otherwise, several features and fixtures ensure energy efficiency. Photovoltaic panels power much of the house. Add in low-flow toilets and faucets and Energy Star bathroom fans. A recirculating system in the bathroom means hot water on demand. And the solar-powered water heater counts among the upgrades available to a

gulfstreammediagroup.com

broader base of consumers, Daly says. “You can get a solar-powered water heater for less,” he says. “I wouldn’t mind putting in one of these.” BACK TO THE FUTURE Some simple eco-upgrades sidestep modern technology entirely by returning to earlier design principles, Kyle Abney says. “I’m a big fan of fundamental things: deep overhangs, front porches all the way around the house, designed for keeping the house naturally cooler,” he says. Whether in returning to traditional design techniques, replacing non-native plants with drought-tolerant Florida-friendly vegetation or adopting advanced energy-saving technologies, the principles of LEED certification remain more widely available even if the certifications themselves do not. A plaque on the Kisslings’ doorbell announces the home’s LEED status. It serves as a starting point for an important conversation about sustainability, Suzanne Kissling says. As friends and visitors ask questions, she informs on the details involved, the resources properly used and the human resources—right nearby—available to help create a wider ripple effect of environmental stewardship. “It’s important that people know we have talent in Martin County that can get this done,” she says.

WILLOUGHBY GOLF CLUB T H E C H A L L E NG E : Willoughby Golf Club general manager Michele Reilly affectionately dubbed it “the fitness closet.” The underwhelming gym was crammed with low-tech equipment grudgingly used by residents. Plans called for the creation of a new exercise concept that would encompass 5,200 square feet, modernize the routine workout and overlook a lake. “The difficulty was finding the right location,” Reilly says. “We’re a little land poor. We really don’t have a lot of room for expansion.” Appealing to a new era of owners set the course for the renovation of the old cabana bar. “You have to kind of be savvy in what you’re offering,” Reilly says. “Our membership is getting younger.” T H E T R A NS FO R MA T I O N: The fitness center boasts flat-screen TVs, wireless connectivity and a studio for circuit training, Tai Chi and yoga; it saw 300 visitors in the first month. “It really brings a total new feeling to the club that wasn’t here,” Reilly says. As for the old cabana bar, it was replaced by a structure with a fixed roof, automatic screens and a fireplace. “We try and do something new every couple of years,” Reilly says. “We love nothing more than when members return in the fall and we have something fresh and new to share with them.”

HARBOUR RIDGE T HE CHALLENG E : A desire to improve overall efficiency, update aging infrastructure and maintain a level of relevance led to the makeover of Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club’s golf courses— Golden Marsh and River Ridge—and the addition of an 18,000-square-foot lifestyle center called Lakeside. The latter cost the club a tennis court. “We had 10, but the expansion meant we would have nine,” general manager Michael Salerno says, noting that today’s residents want more than golf, tennis and treadmills. Instead, they want a lifestyle that revolves around health and happiness. “It’s about wellness,” Salerno says. “Wellness is the largest trend. Members expect to have it right inside the gates of their own community.” T HE T R AN SFO R M A T IO N: Golf-course views were enhanced as a result of the makeover, revealing the beauty of the fairways and greens and complementing the more than 400 acres of natural landscape

within the club’s footprint. Last year marked the third-best home-sales year since 1995. “We continue to see an increased level of interest in Harbour Ridge,” Salerno says. Lakeside, formerly 4,500 square feet, impresses with a salon and spa, Pilates and spin rooms and a tennis shop, all of which have received rave reviews. “Our members are saying they’re healthier than they’ve ever been before,” Salerno says. “They’re saying Lakeside is the reason for their improved condition.”

MARINER SANDS COUNTRY CLUB T HE CHAL L E NG E : The club sorely needed a face-lift. The bar spanned less than 250 square feet, the pool was stuck in the ’70s and the faded umbrella tables surrounding it served as modest seating for the walk-up kitchen. “It was showing its age, and it was time,” chief operating officer Bill Ward says. Two of the club’s nine tennis courts were relocated to make room for a 6,000-square-foot multipurpose swimming amenity. A 5,200-squarefoot bar and grill was constructed for casual dining. The old tennis shop was knocked down and rebuilt in another spot so that a pair of pickleball courts could take its place. “How are you going to get all the certain components the members desired to fit within the space that you have to work with?” Ward asks. “That was one of the challenges.” T HE T R AN S F O R M A T IO N: Residents now say they feel as if they have been transported to a tropical resort when they visit the new facility. They describe it as an experience in the Bahamas. “It was a huge hit,” Ward says. Food and beverage revenues jumped 36 percent as a result of the project, and membersatisfaction surveys came in with high marks. “It’s obviously a very competitive industry, and being able to provide these features that not only current residents but future homebuyers are looking for is key,” he says.

PIPER'S LANDING YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB T HE CHALL E NG E : With 70 percent of the membership voting to gut the clubhouse, with the project being completed on time and on budget and with nothing but compliments when the new venue debuted, this private community’s challenges were minimal. “How many clubs renovate, and you receive no complaints from members after the renovation?” asks COO Brian Reich. “The members absolutely love it.” A small issue arose with the delivery timeline for the carpet, which originally was set to ship from China on a boat. Quick scrambling to re-route the product via plane succeeded, but the furniture arrived first. “We had to double back,” Reich says. “There was some moaning and groaning, but we got it done.” T HE T R AN S F O R M A T IO N: A 60-foot bar that could be the biggest in Martin County anchors the 32,000-square-foot clubhouse. “We really did it up with some beautiful wood finishes, a marble top, and we added five 55-inch TVs around the room,” Reich says.

A covered patio with seating for 100 and a sunken fire pit ringed by 15 chairs comprise the outdoor portion of the re-do. “It’s really a spectacular look,” Reich says. “We spared no expense.” Another 100 seats were tacked onto the indoor operation, increasing total dining to 200-plus. “At the end of the day, I would say we have an awardwinning clubhouse,” Reich says.

SAILFISH POINT T HE CHALL E N G E : Developing a strategic plan. Presenting it to residents. Getting them to buy in. All had to be accomplished prior to the first piece of equipment appearing on the property. Then came a review of best industry practices and meetings with several study groups. It was worth it, says general manager Edward Ewing Jr. T HE T R AN S F O RM A T IO N : “The overall response of the membership since completion has been terrific,” Ewing says of the renovations, which comprised tearing down the old lunch stop on the golf course and replacing it with the Cross Roads Café; building a health and fitness center and an outdoor-dining terrace; and editing the casual- and formal-dining areas on the upper level of the clubhouse and the spa on the lower level. “The additions and renovations have been a significant enhancement,” Ewing says. “The biggest trends today are for casual dining and health and fitness.” Both have been welcomed with open arms. “The addition of the Terrace Grill and the Cross Roads Café have turned out to be the busiest dining venues,” Ewing says. “Members and their families love them. They also love the focus on health and fitness. The feedback has been outstanding not only from existing members but also new and prospective members.”

water view gives a space gravitas, grasps the imagination and provides a backdrop that is constantly in motion. It is everything nature intended. For many seeking to stake their claim on a piece of South Florida’s most desirable lots, waterfront is prime real estate. Angela Reynolds, the internationally renowned designer who counts Celine Dion and Elin Nordegren as her clients, is not only big on flowing views, she’s also big on liquid assets. “I love incorporating water in my designs,” Reynolds says. “Water creates an experience of calm and serenity.” It’s not a novel notion: from the Alhambra to the Taj Mahal, fountains and reflection pools have captivated for centuries. Touring one of Reynolds’ latest completed projects, a 9,000-square-foot remodel along Jupiter’s Intracoastal, one is first greeted by the commanding stone, wood, steel and glass entrance, juxtaposed by large steps that appear to literally float atop water. “Water softens the grandness,” Reynolds says. “It makes it more approachable and ethereal.” Green, tropical plants of various sizes and textures surround the narrow water channels and the two basins on either side. A 10-foot glass door pivots to enter. “The door really sets the tone,” Reynolds says. When the Reilly family purchased the home, it was a 1980s ultra-modern relic, exuding the coolness of Madonna in her heyday—leather skirts and Aqua Net. Yet the family knew that with the right team, it could—like the pop queen—be reinvented. “It was a challenge,” Amy Reilly says. “We were looking to transform a home that was dated with round walls and stairs in the middle. We wanted a family-friendly, contemporary home. And most importantly, we needed it to work for our busy family of six. Out of all the designers we interviewed, Angela was the most visionary.” Along with hiring Reynolds, the Reillys brought on award-winning architect Mitchell O’Neil and Affinity Construction Group. The biggest structural challenge was removing the ceiling in the family room and kitchen to build a second-floor base that would allow for an upstairs addition. “We actually ended up with another 2 feet of ceiling height for the kitchen and family room,” Reilly says. Reynolds, who loves ceiling decor, took a cue and added beautiful, ebony wooden slats

in the new ceiling. It became an interior and exterior motif. For the sunken living room, a popular ’80s feature, Reynolds gave it a refresh by designing a custom sofa from New Design in Fort Lauderdale. The sofa hugs the stairs as if it had been grafted to them. “This room was one of the more challenging ones, because of those stairs,” Reynolds says. “But challenges force me to come up with solutions that are exciting.” The dark ebony coffee table with its edgy abstract angles (another custom build) pairs precisely with the tailored sofa and the Bolier side chairs. The room’s fabric, a study in different shades of gray (though not quite 50!), is made for outdoor use. Reynolds wanted to make sure the room was not off limits to the couple’s four children. A saltwater aquarium and oversized-but-thin Restoration Hardware chandeliers complete the look. Along the opposite wall, a glass-encased wine room holds more than 400 bottles—another liquid feature. For the dining room, Reynolds constructed a custom chandelier by assembling a variety of single Arteriors pendants in various sizes and adding a metal ceiling plate to unify the pendants, changing the way it cascades and diffuses light.

(above) An ‘80s sunken living room takes a transitional turn with ebony, custom furniture, outdoor fabrics and a soothing color palette.

Different levels add interest in a backyard that mirrors the most coveted boutique hotels

“We looked at so many different options,” Reilly says. “And now I have something so unique and elegant created by Angela’s team. I love it.” The original marble floors in the home were in great condition, but Reynolds softened the feel of the kitchen with wide, white oak planks that would contrast with the dark ceiling. “I like to mix and match different types of wood,” Reynolds says. “Sometimes clients are afraid to incorporate contrast, but it only adds layers of beauty. We are past the era where everything needs to match.” White shaker cabinets keep the look timeless, while the glass uppers showcase beloved objects without fear of playful children. Off the kitchen, the home opens up to a completely redesigned backyard space. Almost every inch of soil was turned over to create the pièce de résistance, conceptualized by landscape architect Tony Grimaldi. “In Florida, there is such a focus on exterior spaces,” Reynolds says. “No one is hanging out in the formal dining room; we are hanging out by the pool. Our goal was to capture the feeling of an inviting, boutique hotel.” The space is multi-leveled, continuing its use of fluid elements leading up to the awesome Intracoastal access. The pool, newly minted, has a hip, white plaster shell and features white, antislip tile that seamlessly dips into the water. “Joe’s Point,”named after the home’s owner, is a separate sitting area off the pool that can only be accessed by walking over wet steps and a gentle waterfall feature. The outdoor furniture at Joe’s Point is from Restoration Hardware. Above, a pergola from Arcadia opens and closes depending on weather conditions.

(top) Who said a family room needs to be closed in? This is Florida, after all. Resysta composite on the walls is incorporated into the custom furnishings for a look that is cool and contemporary. (bottom) All-weather chairs and materials make this space usable and kid-friendly yearround.

“Joe’s Point is at the edge of the pool, near the water,” Reilly says. “It is the most relaxing place to end the day.” The backyard also boasts a covered canopy that feels like a family room, with cozy, custom sitting pieces made from Resysta composite, an all-weather material. The same composite is used on the ceiling, harking back to the kitchen’s design. On the opposite end, another zen spot has been carved out along a rectangular fire pit. It is sunken, like the living room inside. Weather resistant, blue sofas give a burst of color and manifest clean lines. But the best part? The front row seats are for watching the famed Florida orange and pink skies that begin and end the day. The pool, large enough for laps and certainly large enough to hold spirited afternoon parties, is an exercise in restraint, simplicity and multileveling. There is a shelf for youngsters to wade in or mothers to soak up vitamin D atop icy white, Brown Jordan swim chaises. Alongside, there are more thematic floating steps, this time leading into the water. “We enjoy every inch of the backyard space,” Reilly says. “I’m so grateful to our entire design team in how they created something so functional and so chic.”

Science Changing Education “I had moved to Florida to be with my dad during high school because he was sick with stomach cancer. I remember watching the Scripps campus being built in Jupiter. I was 16 when he passed. If I could talk to my dad today, I would tell him I feel like I am making a difference. I am working toward a PhD in biochemistry at that campus, the No. 2 ranked program in the nation. We are developing antibodies designed to direct people’s immune cells to kill their cancer.
