This year, we wanted the Palm Beach Charity Register cover to make an inspirational statement through art. After a call to local artists and a reader vote, we landed on One World, One Life, One Love created by Eduardo Mendieta and Jay Bellicchi. Known for their graffiti-style murals, they adapted the cover art from a mural they created in Broward County. Since 2010, the artists’ work has dressed up the sides of buildings throughout South Florida, from the Wynwood Art District in Miami to downtown West Palm Beach—501 Fern Street boasts one of their collaborations, as does the Evernia Parking Garage (Bellicchi painted the sixth floor, Mendieta the seventh). For more about the artists and their work, see palmbeach illustrated.com/mural.

or many years, we at Palm Beach Media Group have been involved in the community. We have sponsored galas, luncheons, seminars and many other philanthropic events. As someone who attends dozens of these a year, I have not only been able to see where the money goes but have also met wonderful, selfless individuals who give tirelessly of themselves and their resources. If you’re lucky this season, you will attend magnificent gatherings at The Breakers, the Mar-a-Lago Club or the Boca Raton Resort and Club, each of them memorable. Or, you might find yourself at one of our area’s other unique venues, such as the new Wyndham Grand Jupiter, the Eau Palm Beach Resort and Spa, the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach, PGA National Resort and Spa or the Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa. I always thought we were doing the right thing by attending all of these events, and we were. But in the past year, I have had the opportunity to get even more up close and personal with the benefiting nonprofits. My colleagues and I have cooked dinner for families at Quantum House, toured the Pat Reeves Village and visited the Palm Beach County Food Bank. Meeting the people touched by each of these organizations has given us a deeper appreciation of how our involvement has a direct impact. It never occurred to me I wasn’t doing enough, but now I know I can do more. This year, I am making it my mission to get even more involved on a personal level—and to be sure that what I’m doing isn’t primarily funding administrative costs but also getting the funds squarely to those in need. You may not be aware of some newer and smaller charities in the county that can use your help. We highlight as many as we can in the Palm Beach Charity Register—in fact, thanks to the many advertisers who support this publication, we were able to add a dozen more this year, for a total of 150 listings. Throughout the year, you can learn about more events by visiting palmbeachillustrated.com and following our escapades in the community on our social channels. Our staff continues to carry out the philanthropic philosophy of our founder, Ron Woods, which was to give generously and give often. As you make your way through the numerous events this season, know you are not only helping people you have never met but are also making a difference in your own community. See you on the circuit!

ou have probably noticed there is something different about this year’s edition of the Palm Beach Charity Register. Indeed, we’ve made some exciting changes, beginning with the cover. Last spring and summer, we issued a call to local artists, asking them to create a cover look—something representing hope, philanthropy and community—and they blew us away with their work. Then, to reinforce the notion that the Charity Register is a book for and about community, we asked our readers to chime in about their favorite piece of art—and chose the winner based on reader votes. I hope you will agree the piece chosen for the cover—One World, One Life, One Love by Eduardo Mendieta and Jay Bellicchi—is a powerful, memorable image that speaks to the human spirit soaring above adversity. Read more about the artists’ work, much of which is on a monumental scale and publicly displayed, on page 4. Our logo has changed, too, reflecting this exciting new direction. Departments are fresh and current, highlighting everything from the social scene (see “Season Snapshots” on page 13) to ways your philanthropic dollars help support programs that make an impact communitywide (turn to “Parties with a Purpose,” page 26). At the heart of the Charity Register are the event listings, beginning on page 49. This year, we have included more listings than ever before—150, to be exact—to ensure you have the most comprehensive resource possible when you are planning your social calendar for the season ahead. Beyond setting key dates aside, however, you can glean far more valuable information. The listings spotlight the mission and good work of these nonprofit, community-based organizations, making it easier to decide where to invest for maximum impact. Since its inception, the Palm Beach Charity Register has been the “bible” of all things social and charitable. Twentyone years later, we have grown to be not only the biggest and best resource of its kind but also the most visually striking. Enjoy the issue.

The Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival—and, farther south, the Boca Bacchanal—brought sizzle to the area. Celebrity chefs, innovative cuisine concepts, wonderful wines and a great gathering of like-minded foodies made for some unforgettable moments. And the fun didn’t end there. From the glittering Paradise Casino to the jeans-and-jewels Haute Hoedown to the mad Mad Hatter lunch, the locals got into the party spirit—and kept it going all season long.

In style and in the good life, Palm Beachers are always ahead of the game—and quite a sporting bunch, too. That’s because we have some of the best spectator sports in the world in our own backyard: polo and show jumping. If shopping could be considered a sport, several well-heeled ladies got workouts at trunk shows, store openings— including Boca’s new Lord & Taylor—and shopping events like The Gardens Mall’s twentieth anniversary.

Master Plans Local event planners dish about four hot trends in charity events and what to expect this season

Kristie Well s

LILA Photo

Charity fundraisers have evolved from more than just beautiful parties. A trend that has been building for the past few seasons, nonprofits are shaping events around specific themes, such as their mission statement or the latest Hollywood hit. “Last season seemed to be the year of The Great Gatsby,” observes Palm Beach event planner Tom Mathieu. “It seems as though every year there’s a movie or an event or something that people pick up from, and there always seems to be more than one event centered on that.” A theme can help convey a message in creative ways—and it’s all in the details. For instance, to represent the importance of an early cancer diagnosis, Mathieu incorporated clocks into the decor for the annual Time is of the Essence luncheon for H.O.W. Hearing the Ovarian Cancer Whisper. While some charities execute a different theme every season, others like H.O.W. repeat a longstanding one as a way to build recognition in the community. “Our clients are putting much more thought into branding their annual events versus theming them something new each year,” says Aime Dunstan, president of It! Events and Media in Palm Beach, who has since joined The

Event themes from last season include (clockwise from right) superheroes, The Great Gatsby, casino night and the essence of time.

Design Studio at The Breakers as a design sales manager. “After all, nobody has to ask what to wear to Paradise Casino or Barefoot on the Beach.” Whatever the theme, expect it to translate beyond the decor and into areas such as invitations, giveaways and even catering. At the Palm Beach Police Foundation’s superhero-inspired Policemen’s Ball last year, the theme was also a form of entertainment. “We brought in actors, and they participated during dance time with the guests,” Mathieu says. “It was a lot of fun.”

Color, Color and More Color

24

There was plenty of color at last year’s Beach Bash (left) and Hot Pink Luncheon (top).

Charities are also embracing color in a big way, event planners say. Mathieu says he noticed a lot of bright primary colors in last season’s events, like the Breast Cancer Research Foundation’s Hot Pink Luncheon, which incorporated more pink into the decor. Dunstan adds: “Fashion-forward hosts are going for mixed metallics in place settings, such as a pewter linen with gold flatware and a signature Mar-a-Lago charger. Accent glassware—a wine or water glass in a particular shade to coordinate with the decor— has always been on trend for intimate dinner parties, but gala chairs are now bringing this personal touch to the ballroom as well.” Bruce Sutka, president of Sutra International Design LLC in West Palm Beach, is using color concepts to execute event themes, rather than taking a literal approach. For instance, he’s playing up this year’s Lady in Red Gala—themed “Lady goes to Shanghai”—with rich red and gold tones. Likewise, for the jungle-inspired Red Cross Beach Bash, he’s using colors from a Lilly Pulitzer jungle print. “I think you create an emotion [with color]. You create a sense of place,” he says.

LILA Photo

Naturally, creating an exciting event can come with a hefty price tag. Thanks to an improving economy, event planners are noticing an uptick in nonprofits’ party budgets. “With enough backing and donations, some charities are able to spend a little bit more,” Mathieu says. Sutka says he’s seen budgets expand over the years from roughly $12,000 per event to as high as $80,000. The return on investment will come from ticket sales and financial donations at the event, but first guests must be enticed to attend—which is why nonprofits are spending more money to execute those creative concepts from event planners. “When we show them something that’s never been done before in Palm Beach … sometimes a little wiggle room magically appears in the budget,” Dunstan says. Mathieu sees the majority of increased funds spent on decor. “Depending on the budget, it could be simply making every tablescape very beautiful and very colorful. In some larger events, it’s the whole room decor,” he says. Dunstan has noticed a bigger bottom line on stationery. “Save the dates and invitations are making a much bolder statement as the economy improves and budgets broaden to allow for custom die-cuts, gold foil lettering and luxurious textured papers,” she says. She adds: “I suspect that gift bags are going to be todie-for this season with so much energy brewing in the local economy.” In the end, more money spent on an event can mean more money put back into the community. “As long as [nonprofits] have their underwriting and they are bringing in enough to work with the town on their parameters, why not?” Sutka says.

LILA Photo

Dollar Signs

Suspended centerpieces were seen at the fundraisers for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (below) and the Caron and Hanley Treatment Centers (right and bottom).

Expect the Unexpected Get ready for unusual twists on the norm: Event planners say charities are turning to them for fresh party ideas. “They’re looking for creativity, and my favorite clients are ones who just let me run with it,” Sutka says. For instance, at last year’s Palm Beach Flappers dinner-dance, Sutka used draping to reorient the ballroom at the Beach Club. “You didn’t know what the shape of the room was to begin with, and it worked so beautifully,” he says. Tablescapes in particular are being reimagined. “Suspended centerpieces are really hot,” Dunstan says. “They create this magical movement in the room when suspended over a low tabletop floral arrangement on perhaps a third of the tables, with the others punctuated by taller, lavish florals.” Even the tables themselves have literally turned: “Mixing round, rectangle and square tables in the floor plan is something we’ve been doing for years with wedding design, but nonprofits are now starting to follow suit,” Dunstan says. “Mixing linens to add further dimension, be it a variation in texture or color, is also making a splash.” Check the names on invitations as well for surprises, Dunstan adds. “It’s not all about one headline chairman anymore,” she says. “Some of the island’s most generous philanthropists have joined forces to increase awareness for their respective causes, which will certainly mean record-breaking numbers for all. And men are starting to co-chair more lavish affairs together, which is so much fun.” Ultimately, the idea behind creating a unique event is to generate public interest—and, therefore, financial support, Sutka says. “We in Palm Beach have a very unusual situation because there are so many charity events in one location. It’s not like any other city,” he points out. By coming up with memorable concepts, he says, “the goal is that people have enough interest in this year’s event to want to come back next year.” PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

with a Purpose

When we invest money, we carefully track its journey. We watch how it changes in value until we are presented with a return on investment. In the Palm Beach philanthropic season, however, we are often content knowing our attendance at charity events supports worthwhile causes. But there is more to be gained than a good time. The financial support these organizations receive during the social season translates into important programs that can benefit us all. Read on to learn about three blue-chip events and what quantifiable returns your support generates in our own backyard. It’s an investment worth making.

Good time: Great Charity Challenge Good Deed: Wheels For Kids

Eight-year-old Christina Rodriguez suffers from cerebral palsy and cannot sit or walk on her own. Unfortunately, her family’s health insurance does not cover the type of wheelchair Christina requires. Determined to find a solution, her father reached out to Wheels For Kids, an organization based in Boynton Beach that provides wheelchairs to children with disabilities whose families cannot afford them. Now equipped with a customized wheelchair provided by the nonprofit, Christina attends H.L. Johnson Elementary School in Royal Palm Beach and is able to join her family members on their daily adventures. “She has a little brother who loves pushing her around, and it helps that we can go out together and do things that a normal family can do,” says Christina’s father, Carlos. Wheels For Kids is able to help children like Christina through funds received from donations, and a major benefactor has been the Great Charity Challenge. This unique fundraiser, held every year at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, is a relay-style

26

equestrian jumping competition in which 35 rider teams are paired with 35 Palm Beach County charities randomly selected from the 400 that apply. The winning team is awarded $150,000 for its charity, and every team is guaranteed a minimum of $15,000. From 2010 to 2014, the Great Charity Challenge has distributed more than $6.2 million to more than 100 Palm Beach County nonprofits— including Wheels for Kids, which has received $210,000 from the event since 2010. For Denise Roeser Jungbert, who founded Wheels For Kids in 2003, the funds were enough to increase the number of wheelchairs her nonprofit could donate from one in its first year of existence to eight 10 years later. The Great Charity Challenge has “been the biggest and the strongest source of funds,” says Roeser Jungbert, whose 25-year-old daughter has cerebral palsy. “It’s enabled us to place wheelchairs out there so these kids didn’t fall through the cracks.” ( ftigreatcharitychallenge.com; wheelsforkids.org)

Country club chefs Michael Crain and Jeremy Erne (far left) along with Mark Woodruff (left) prepare dishes during last year's challenge, which benefited programs like Camp Good Grief (below).

Good time: Country Club Chef Showdown

Good Deed: Hospice services As a volunteer with the Hospice of Palm Beach County Foundation, Patti Marshall befriends patients in end-of-life care. Many don’t have family members who live locally, or they spend a great deal of time with only their caregivers. Marshall’s visits are often the bright spot in their days. Marshall is an example of what the organization calls the “circle of care”—a network of people who have had positive, personal experiences with Hospice that propel them to get involved and give back. In Marshall’s case, her husband and mother were both in Hospice, and she and her daughters have used the foundation’s bereavement services to cope with her son’s suicide. “After everything we’d been through and all the support we received from Hospice, I decided it was time to give back, so I became a volunteer,” she says.

28

Bereavement counseling is one of the many programs funded in part by Hospice’s Country Club Chef Showdown. This Iron Chef-style competition, held once a year in north and south Palm Beach County, challenges four chefs to create an original dish using the same ingredient. While one end result is a delicious meal, the other is the formation of programs like Camp Good Grief, a free, annual three-day camp for children ages 8-17 who have suffered a loss. The camp provides a safe space of music, art, games and adventure activities for the children to heal, grow and connect with peers who understand their feelings of loss. As Marshall can attest, Hospice’s grief-counseling services are beneficial at any age. “My life changed when I accepted the grief support that Hospice offered,” she says. “I learned that we are not alone, and we can go on afterwards.” (hpbc.com)

CAUSE&EFFECT

A holiday tradition, the Festival of Trees raises funds for the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens and its outreach programs, particularly those geared toward schoolchildren.

Good Time: Festival of Trees

Good Deed: Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens “If you would like to hear about how 3 friends survive a plane crash and discover treasure, then this is where the story begins … ” This is the first line from The Adventure of Love, written by Eva Hasenhuttl-Bishop when she was in Leslie Drinkovic’s third-grade class at Palm Beach Public. Hasenhuttl-Bishop, 8 years old at the time, wrote and illustrated the story as a creative writing exercise after visiting the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. Far more than just a garden, ANSG offers engaging opportunities for students to experience visual art, environmental sciences and language arts within a real-world context. Public, private and homeschooled groups visit ANSG throughout the year and engage in approved curriculum. In January, the organization also hosts Literacy Days, during which more than 500 Title 1 students learn new and creative approaches to reading from nationally recognized authors

and illustrators. “It’s a wonderful way for children to see literacy outside the classroom,” says Cynthia Palmieri, executive director of ANSG. None of this would be possible without ANSG’s primary fundraising vehicle: the Festival of Trees. A local holiday tradition, the festival turns the gardens into a forest of brilliantly lit Christmas trees decorated by an array of interior designers, artists, architects and florists. The event brings almost 4,000 visitors to the gardens each year, and their support benefits not only ANSG but also future patrons. “I think one of the ways we create stewards is by giving [children] such a positive experience in their community,” Palmieri says. “They’ll fall in the love with the gardens and come multiple times. Then they will be the ones to take care of the gardens after we’re gone.” (ansg.org)

What’s in a

Name? By Amy Woods

The philanthropists who pledge their dollars to Palm Beach County’s charities sometimes do the same with their names. Buildings big and small, public and private, religious and nondenominational all have backstories about the donors who offered to endow them.

Jack & Barbara Nicklaus

Nicklaus (nikles) n. 1. A golf legend known for his sobriquet, the Golden Bear. 2. A golf legend known for his charity, the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation.

No name has become more synonymous with the game of golf than Jack Nicklaus. The man has won a record 18 professional major titles. Retired from the game, Nicklaus travels the world as a course designer and has established close to 380 greens in 39 states and 36 countries. In Palm Beach County, where he and his wife, Barbara, have lived for almost 50 years, his brand as an amazing athlete and brilliant businessman has spread to the philanthropic community. “I have always put golf second to family, because family truly represents my legacy,” he says. “But on a grander scale, our children, your children and children in general are our legacy.” The Nicklaus name appears on a pair of pediatric-care facilities in South Florida that offer medical services and urgent care to newborns through young adults. It also appears on a ball field in Palm Beach Gardens and a street in North Palm Beach. The outpatient centers and the foundation that funds them mean the most to the father of five and grandfather of 22.

034-NAMES-2015.indd 35

“A legacy should not be measured by wins, trophies and records,” he says. “A legacy should be defined by how you use the resources, the opportunity and the time God gave you to leave this world a better place than when you arrived. What is most important to Barbara and me is that kids and their families are getting access to the bestpossible care available.” Q: Why have you and Mrs. Nicklaus made children’s health care your legacy? A: When our daughter Nan was about 11 months old, she was struggling to breathe—basically, she was choking. At the time, we were living in Ohio, and we took her to Columbus Children’s Hospital. They performed a procedure—actually with an adult bronchoscope—and discovered she had inhaled a piece of crayon. She battled pneumonia and other complications while there, but the doctors and staff were terrific, and they essentially saved her life. It was at that time we began to make a strong commitment to children’s health care. PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

“My goal is to do what my father would have wanted, because we’re not giving away our money; we’re giving away his money.”

Dick and Barbara Schmidt support several nonprofits related to health, including Barbara’s Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life foundation.

1. A common surname that belongs to hundreds of residents in Palm Beach County.

2. A common surname that belongs to two extraordinary residents in Boca Raton.

Dick and Barbara Schmidt represent a family force that began a generation ago with the popular patriarch of philanthropy, Charles Schmidt. The senior Schmidt started a farm-implement retail chain in 1938 and, after selling it to a national conglomerate 31 years later, formed a foundation in the early 1990s. “I have a phrase that I use to describe him: ‘He spent half his life making a fortune and the other half giving it away,’” Dick Schmidt says of his late father. Charles Schmidt and his Schmidt Family Foundation funded organizations that improved lives and empowered those who reaped rewards to pay it forward. “He liked to use money charitably where it would make a difference,” Dick Schmidt says. “He believed strongly in education. He believed strongly in health care.” The foundation named the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine and College of Science at Florida Atlantic University, the Schmidt College Center at Lynn University and several spaces inside the Boca Raton Regional Hospital building. “I knew that I would be facing this responsibility someday,” Dick Schmidt says of his father’s death in 1996 at age 83. “My goal is to do what my father would have wanted, because we’re not giving away our money; we’re giving away his money.” Since 1996, the junior Schmidt has given away $49 million. “It’s hard to give money intelligently,” he says. “South Florida changes, ebbs and flows. Needs shift in the community, and we have tried to be current.” Barbara Schmidt’s Peaceful Mind Peaceful Life nonprofit has brought a spiritual side to their grant-giving. “She’s opened up some branches,” Dick Schmidt says. “The opportunities that she’s excited about balance things. We make a good team.” Q: What are you proudest of as president of the foundation? A: We give locally in our community, and we fund between 50 and 75 charities every year. We give money to Food for the Poor. I’m very proud of the work we’ve done, and I’m particularly proud of my father.

Joseph, Jack & Mort Mandel

Mandel (mandel) n.

Palm Beach resident Mort Mandel sits on a table in the downtown West Palm Beach library, to which his foundation donated $5 million. It is now named the Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach.

034-NAMES-2015.indd 37

1. A band of billionaire brothers who share their wealth with others. 2. The name preceding the Jewish Community Center of the Palm Beaches and the Public Library of West Palm Beach.

Joseph, Jack and Mort Mandel have made a mighty moniker for themselves by contributing to causes that educate and enlighten the mind and by investing in institutions that influence and inspire the soul. The siblings’ self-made success from humble beginnings has enabled them to establish a foundation with this mission statement: “The hallmark of our philanthropy is our commitment to invest in people with the values, ability and passion to change the world.” “The main interest of our efforts is to invest in people,” Mort Mandel says. “We mostly do things that help improve the quality of life because we want to help make the world a better place. I know how grandiose that sounds, but that’s it.” The entrepreneurs, whose family emigrated from Poland, founded Premier Industrial Corp. in 1940. The high-end auto-parts outfit eventually merged with Farnell Electronics in a $3 billion transaction. In 1953, the brothers formed the Mandel Foundation. “I had the benefit of growing up in a house where it really meant something to be generous,” Mort Mandel says. “My parents gave money—very small amounts compared to the amount their children are giving but as big a sacrifice for them as ours is for us. Maybe bigger, actually.” The naming of the library at Clematis Street’s City Center took place in 2012, one year before the naming of the JCC on a gorgeous new campus in Palm Beach Gardens. More buildings could see “Mandel” on their marquees in the future. “As the weeks and months and years go by, there are other things that motivate us,” Mort Mandel says. “It wouldn’t surprise me if there were something else.” Q: Jack, who passed away in 2001, said he wasn’t going to die unhappy. what about you? A: I feel very fulfilled. My guess is that a lot of people cannot say that. I really don’t think that it has to do with money. If you’re a good person, and if there is part of your income you can devote to others, making a big gift is very fulfilling. PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

Decoding

Dress Code

the

Social season has arrived, and your party-packed schedule—weighted with charity soirees, cultural galas and holiday festivities—delivers a perennial conundrum: what to wear. Event dress codes provide some style guidance—beach party, black-tie optional, prairie chic (come again?)—but they do not always make getting fête-fabulous less daunting. For instance, when a celebrity golf tournament calls for “athletic dress,” should you hit the links in a hyper-sporty designer dress or opt for sophisticated activewear? For a white-tie affair, is a bespoke suit the right choice or will the archetypal tuxedo suffice? Here, with a little help from two Palm Beach style gurus (who have loads of fashion-industry experience to boot), we deconstruct a trio of dress codes, provide what-to-wear tips and feature some of our favorite picks for the upcoming season.

By Kerry Shorr

Creative Black Tie

Definition: Head-turning glamour with a dramatic twist. Where this code reigns: Charity balls, cultural fêtes, milestone celebrations. Dressing tips: “Think of it as putting your own spin on getting completely dressed up,” says Jennifer Loiseau, a 20-year fashion veteran who now commandeers Jennifer’s Designer Exchange, a luxury consignment store in Palm Beach Gardens. Floor-length gowns may be the autopilot pick for most, but knee-length dresses are gaining momentum. A high-low dress is the perfect hybrid. For spice, choose something with lace, faux-fur details or beaded embroidery. Vibrant hues like green, blue or purple are alternatives for black. Dressing don’ts: As over-seasoning can ruin a great steak, the same rules apply to accessorizing. Too many add-ons are just that: too much. For maximum results, our stylists suggest nixing the last piece you put on.

For men: A variation on the standard black tie, men are allowed to show their sartorial side. “It is still a formal affair. Keep overt flamboyance to a minimum,” says fashion consultant Susan Palladino, the former managing director of public relations for Calvin Klein who now provides counsel to the island’s high-powered style tribe. Consider a custom-made tuxedo with a contrasting lapel in a saturated color like burgundy or midnight blue. A black shirt, instead of a conventional white one, can add the right dose of originality. Accessories: For women, bright, flashy baubles work best for monochromatic attire. Otherwise, keep jewelry reserved and let the ensemble shine. Sky-high stilettos or lace-up boots and a jeweled-encrusted bag will take it up a notch. For men, trade the tie for a colorful bowtie, a pocket square and chunky, patent-leather dress shoes.

Palm Beach Chic Definition: Iconic elegance with a pinch of preppy.

Where this code reigns: Dinner parties, charity luncheons, polo matches. Dress tips: There is a reason one of Palm Beach’s favorite mantras is Coco Chanel’s famous quote, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman”—the county’s fashionable residents like their wardrobes to make a memorable statement. “Be creative, and exhibit your personal style,” Palladino advises. Quality and comfort are key. Opt for ethereal pieces in soft, can’t-stop-touching fabrics like printed chiffon dresses and beaded silk kaftans. Palm Beach has its playful side, so pick pieces with bold graphics and colors or ones that conjure historical periods, like the Wild West or 1970s revival. Dressing don’ts: Wear monogrammed or logoed clothing with care. One or two pieces are fine. Too many may look ridiculous. For men: Classic cool is the name of the game. Start with a pair of white jeans, a patterned shirt and a calfskin belt. A cashmere jacket or vintage trench will dress up the look for evening. Accessories: For women, 18-karat gold jewelry and strappy sandals are sleek, neutral staples. Complement with one of the season’s “It” bags. For men, leather loafers, bright neckwear and vintage cufflinks add polish for day or night. 46 PALM BEACH CHARITY REGISTER

Nautical

Where this code reigns: Boat parties, birthday “sail-ebrations,” lobster boils. Dressing tips: “Nautical dressing is defined by the details,” Loiseau notes. Pick form-accentuating silhouettes in a neutral color palette: white, navy, red, baby blue or sandy beige. Layer on stripes, cruise prints, toggle closures and rope trim. Dressing don’ts: Don’t go overboard. “The key to keeping this look iconic is to remember that less is more,” Loiseau says. For men: Reel in a modern, maritime look with tailored shorts, unstructured trousers or rolled chinos in red, white or navy. Top with a white tee and a striped sweater or a blazer. Accessories: For women, wedges are ideal if standing in grass or sand. For contrast, add a handbag with a punchy print, like polka dots or palm fronds. A pearl necklace is a trusted sea-inspired favorite. For men, channel the marine motif with a Greek fisherman’s cap and leather sandals.

Need more style assistance? Here’s some help:

Definition: Stylish, ship-to-shore regalia.

Play Sherlock. Determining the “dressiness” of a dress code can be found on the invite itself. Expensive card stock, raised lettering and gold engraving are telltale signs of a fancy shindig. If no clues are forthcoming, call and ask the host, who will be thrilled to fill you in. Ask a stylist. Those people walking around your favorite boutique or department store do more than just haul your picks to a dressing room and ask if you want a different size. They know a lot about trends and the season’s must-have essentials. If you have questions, ask. Plus, that good advice is gratis. Theme 101. If you RSVP for a themed event and have zilch to wear, you cannot show up in your street clothes, no matter how nice they are (plus, hostesses hate it). Hit your attic, a local costume shop or a party store, and pick something appropriate. You are sure to wear it again—like Halloween.

Helping Hands it’s good business to give back. three companies lead by example.

1

By Jennifer Pfaff

Through financial contributions, donated goods and hands-on service, South Florida businesses are giving back to the community in amazing ways. See how three generous area companies are making a positive, lasting impact.

Each year, the employees of Juno Beach-based Florida Power and Light serve a combined 49,000 hours in the community. A bulk of those hours is carried out through the company’s Power to Care program, an annual, weeklong initiative in which employees perform various acts of service. During this year’s Power to Care week, held March 3-8, FPL and NextEra Energy staff helped beautify Washington Elementary School in Riviera Beach, packaged and distributed food to needy families through Boca Helping Hands, assembled care packages for deployed soldiers through the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach in Lake Park and more. In addition, the company has donated nearly $3.7 million so far this year, including funding 40 school robotics teams, six of which are in this area.

3

Since the start of 2014, the Private Client Reserve of U.S. Bank in Palm Beach has donated $70,500 to local nonprofits, and employees have already volunteered roughly 250 combined hours. Among the company’s Good Samaritans is market leader Sandra Fleming, who devotes time to Families First of Palm Beach County and has served on the charity’s board of directors for 14 years. Making a difference in the local Jewish community is wealth management consultant Joel Yudenfreund, who received the “rising star” award from the Mandel Jewish Community Center of the Palm Beaches this year for his service.

2

In Palm Beach, The Breakers Hotel imparts its culture of philanthropy onto its staff from the start: On the second day of orientation, eligible new hires volunteer at a local charity and receive volunteer benefits—paid time off that allows them to serve in the community. The resort also promotes a Summer of Giving campaign from May 1 to August 31; this year, 988 team members participated in 97 volunteer activities. With this encouragement, The Breakers employees in 2013-14 volunteered 13,058 community service hours across 120 charities, including a combined 843 hours with Habitat for Humanity, 700 hours at Quantum House in West Palm Beach and 488 hours at Big Dog Ranch Rescue in Wellington. In addition, the resort donated tangible gifts such as 1,087 furniture items to Gulfstream Goodwill Industries, 900 pounds of food to Feeding South Florida in West Palm Beach and 663 household items to The Lord’s Place in West Palm Beach.
