I discovered that I had breast cancer during a routine mammogram in July 2011. My surgeon recommended that I meet with Dr. Kerwin, a Board Certified Radiation Oncologist at Premiere Oncology. Dr. Kerwin helped me with my decision as to which treatment plan was best for me. He was very knowledgeable, patient and spent as much time with me as I needed. He explained all of my options, which made me feel at peace with my decision for radiation therapy. During each and every visit, I was welcomed warmly by everyone I came in contact with at Premiere Oncology. Dr. Kerwin, his nurse Jennifer and my radiation therapist Kim provided me the best care I could have ever expected. Premiere Oncology and their staff were truly more than I had hoped for during this difficult time. It takes special people to work in this field. Thank you, Premiere Oncology for helping me get back to the things I love most... my family and flying!

Q:
Dear Dr. Fox: The other day I picked my kid up from school and I heard one of his friends ask if I was his grandma. I was shocked, but took a long, hard, objective look at myself in the mirror. I don’t think I’m ready for a facelift yet, but I notice that some of the lines around my mouth and nose have definitely gotten deeper over the last few years. Is there anything other than a facelift that can be done about this?
surgery look that you may have seen with some of the personalities on TV. When the right patient is coupled with the right surgeon the results can be remarkable.

Surprisingly, not only is this one of the most common problems people come to see me for but it is also the easiest to address. You’ve probably noticed that many of the celebrities in Hollywood don’t seem to be aging at the same rate you are. It’s not because they’re not, it’s because they’re doing something about it.There are many types of fillers that you’ve heard of like juvederm, restilyne, collagen, etc., but in the case where you’re not ready yet for an early facelift, what I suggest is either radiesse or fat injections. Radiesse can be done quite easily in about half an hour with immediate results that last for about one year.Alternatively, if you are seeking a permanent solution, a fat injection is a very practical choice. >From a cost perspective, fat injections are definitely more cost-effective than yearly fillers. Dear Dr. Fox: As I am quickly approaching 60, I have wanted to take better care of myself. I’ve started exercising and have lost some weight, but now that I’ve lost the weight, it seems like I look older. Can you explain this to me? This is more common than you think. What has happened is that not only have you had a reduction in volume, but also a reduction in the supporting structures of your skin, or both. In order to improve this you need to elevate the tissues back to their previous locations and you have to reduce the excess skin. You may also need to restore volume in some areas of your face, be it Radiesse or fat injections, to reestablish a youthful appearance. This would be called a vertical facelift. As long as you elevate in the correct direction (vector) you can actually look better than before you lost your weight. Your goal should be to achieve a more youthful look, not the obvious plastic
Dear Dr. Fox: I had a facelift a number of years ago and I know that I’m going to need another one someday, but I’m trying to decide when is the best time to have it redone. I’m 72 right now. I absolutely understand what you are saying. Most women want Well, this is the age that you now need to make a decision as to whether or not you are ever going to have another facelift. If you have decided to have one someday, then why not have it done when you can most enjoy it instead of waiting until you’re older? It may be more practical to optimize your appearance as young as you can. By deciding for surgery now, you will be able to enjoy the benefits for many years to come. The facelift experience today is much different that it was even a decade ago. I’ve see secondary facelifts heal in as little as a week. Any touch up that needs to be done later in life should be handled by fillers or fat injection. Dear Dr. Fox: I’ve had three kids and after 12 years of marriage I now find that I’m only comfortable being with my husband with the lights off. How involved is a breast augmentation and does it help in my situation? What you are describing may actually be two problems. The first is that when you are breast feeding, your breasts enlarge and are heavier. As such, gravity will work on you. After you stop breast feeding the milk producing tissue goes away and you are left with a volume deficit as well. A simple breast augmentation is a great solution if you only have volume-loss issues. If you have both volume and gravity issues, then a breast lift with a breast augmentation can help you recapture the body that you had before you had kids. I have had many patients tell me that their husbands derived the benefit from the increased comfort and confidence of their new bodies.

IT PAYS TO DREAM

successful entrepreneurial friend of mine recently told me the best business advice he ever received: “Never stop dreaming.” Back then, he’d outlined his idea to a savvy acquaintance who had retired from a similar industry. “He never asked me if I was crazy, never said, ‘Don’t do that.’ In fact, he did not say one negative thing,” my friend said. “He just asked me questions and helped me flesh out the idea in my own mind. When the conversation was ending, he encouraged me to never stop dreaming, for dreams are the precursors to success. Those were powerful words for me to hear then, and I remember them every time I think about a new project, or advise someone who has one.” Did you know there is research that indicates children who are daydreamers in school end up being more successful than others in their chosen fields, whether it’s in science, business or government? That positive thinkers are healthier than negative thinkers? That athletes who visualize their performance succeed more often than those who don’t? When I first entered the magazine business and started this company, which now publishes 10 titles and three websites, I dreamed of publishing beautiful photography and interesting, informative stories using the highest quality printing and paper, and doing it with a talented team for a select audience, at a profit. No kidding; I dreamed of all those things as a package. I had been successful in another business, but I dreamed of building a self-sustaining business in publishing national-quality magazines in a remarkable community. That nice dream came true many years ago and it continues. I had never before thought of this in my friend’s terms. Now I realize this is what we do in our company every day. We have dreams of how to do what we do even better; we have dreams of how to use the latest technology to produce amazing new products to entertain and inform you like never before. Most important, perhaps, we have dreams of helping this community in new ways. We’ve had dreams like these for years (like our Charity Register). They keep coming true, and we keep adding new ones. So, in a place like Naples, which is full of people whose dreams have come true, add some exclamation points to life: Never stop dreaming. We’ll be right there beside you.

FEEDING FRENZY s everyone who tried to visit Seasons 52 when it first opened and couldn’t get a reservation, or tried to get to Trader Joe’s when it debuted and got stuck in the traffic backup on U.S. 41 at the entrance knows, Neapolitans love food. Delighted diners show their support of area restaurants, where successful restaurateurs often decide to launch others—examples include Campiello and Café Lurcat; Sea Salt and Barbatella; Angelina’s Ristorante and Agave Southwestern Grill; and Chops City Grill, Yabba Island Grill and Pazzo. Intimate dinner-party packages, whether in a restaurant, home or on a boat, sell big at charity auctions. And don’t forget dessert. Cupcakes abound with Grace & Shelly’s Cupcakes, Sassy Cakes, Simply Cupcakes of Naples and Naples Cupcake Company, while Norman Love and Royal Palm Chocolates create unique artisan confections. Read about what’s new in dining on page 56, including the latest edition of the restaurant guide created by local foodie Sharon Kenny to help visitors and residents navigate the restaurant scene. Neapolitans are also passionate about food and wine pairings, so it’s no wonder that a number of successful vintners from elsewhere have a presence in Naples, including Grace and Ken Evenstad of Domaine Serene in Oregon, Valerie Boyd and Jeff Gargiulo of Gargiulo Vineyards in Napa Valley, and Clarke and Elizabeth Swanson of Swanson Vineyards, also in Napa. (The Swansons’ daughter Claiborne comes to Naples this month to sign copies of her new photography book. See page 136.) Successful wine pairing and great wine lists also have led some restaurants to open adjacent wine specialty stores. Cases in point: Ridgway Bar & Grill and Tony’s Off Third, and Bleu Provence and Bleu Cellar. Each year we celebrate what Neapolitans love with our annual food and wine issue. The Naples Winter Wine Festival has been prominent on the community’s radar primarily for the amount of money raised for local charities—$106 million in 12 years. This year, 25 charities received grants for programs that help children. For the attendees and trustees of the festival, most of them avid oenophiles, the event is on the map also because of the vintners who pour their finest vintages each year. In this issue, we celebrate some of the chefs from around the country who have come to prepare their culinary best at the pre-auction vintner dinners, where their lavish creations help elevate and enhance the wine that is poured. See some of their work on page 80. By all accounts—restaurant and retail reports, charity fundraising, and traffic—it has been a busy and tasteful season. To raise a glass, Naples Illustrated’s wine editor, Mark Spivak, pops the cork on some great wines to drink now (page 84).

SPRING FLOWERS
VANESSA ROGERS
The lilacs on heirloom china inspired this tablescape by designers Jean Allen and Cherie Baer of Norris Furniture. The designers started with dishes, silverware and stemware that came from store founder Renee Norris’s grandmother. They gave the sentimental pieces a modern twist with substantial Uttermost candleholders and a gold and silver round table by the John-Richard furniture company. Planned Perfection took a cue from the lilacs and created the complementary centerpiece.

Science Meets Spirit The scientific and the spiritual often are seen as mutually exclusive. The book Power Up Your Brain, The Neuroscience of Enlightenment, challenges the notion, and intends to help readers achieve enlightenment. Naples-based Dr. David Perlmutter, a board-certified neurologist and fellow of the American College of Nutrition who has appeared on TV shows including Oprah, Dr. Oz, and Today, co-wrote the book with Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., a medical anthropologist. It includes a five-week plan to prime the brain for enlightenment, with advice on nutrition, exercise, shamanic practice, meditation and visualization. Even if you don’t achieve total enlightenment, the book is an interesting, thought-provoking read; it is available at major booksellers.

Once the NFL football schedule and his role as analyst on ESPN’s Monday Night Countdown are finished for the season, Mike Ditka, the legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end and coach, has more time to devote to his broad range of interests, including business ventures, media appearances, speaking engagements—and golf. The coach supplies his goodwill and time to the annual Mike Ditka/ Jim Hart Celebrity Golf Invitational benefiting the Immokalee Child Care Center. The event April 13 and 14 at Golf Club of the Everglades includes a celebrity pairings party on Friday and the tournament Saturday (immokaleechildcarecenter.org). NI had a chance to talk with Coach Ditka between rounds of golf on a visit to Naples. —Kat Smith n Tell us about your involvement with this event. We’ve done it for a number of years and really, Don Vining [president of the Foundation for the Immokalee Child Care Center] and the guys behind it have done a great job. I think it’s a great cause and that’s the main reason we do it. We’re helping people out, we’re helping kids out, and that’s important. n Has your busy schedule had a negative impact on your golf game? My golf game sucks. I’m not gonna quit playing, though. I travel a lot, but the ESPN thing is done so I get to spend some time in Florida and that’s very much fun for me. I do a lot of speaking, so I travel around the country. … But really, I’m down here for a week, I’ll go up north for something, then I’ll come back. I spend as much time here as I can. n What do you like about this area besides golf? I like that it’s laid-back. I don’t have to get into the bustle and hustle of Chicago or a major city. So it’s kind of nice. n Will you be returning to Monday Night Countdown, and will the show continue the “C’Mon, Man!” segment? One more year for sure. … And yeah, we’re going to do “C’mon, Man!” They get a lot of mileage out of that.

Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild makes a case for the support of the Naples Children & Education Foundation. The woodworking company’s handcrafted wine case (above) created for the Naples Winter Wine Festival sold for $320,000. For the auction, craftsmen made a French Art Deco, Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann-inspired, ebony dry bar to house a special Château Haut-Brion wine collection. Festival chairs Bob and Joan Clifford donated the Haut-Brion wines—a double magnum of the 1989, twin magnums of 2000 and 2005, and 35 bottles from other legendary vintages. This is the fifth year the Artisans’ Guild created something special for the festival. The first year the Guild made a wine barrel shelf for display. For two years, it made smaller gifts for trustees and vintners, and last year, it built a refrigerated cabinet to house the Perfect 100 lot, 100 bottles of 100-point-rated wines. —Kathy Becker

Versatile Vermouth The botanically infused wine has a long history as medicine, mixer and aperitif. By Mark Spivak
Try Carpano Antica, right, in a classic Manhattan.
Technically not a vermouth, Dubonnet contains quinine. Dolin is a dry, delicate vermouth. 60 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
Fortifying wine with herbs, spices and roots has been popular for thousands of years, although originally the practice had more to do with covering up flaws than anything else. A key ingredient in early infusions was wormwood, believed to be beneficial in treating stomach disorders. The drink became known by the German word wermut, which eventually morphed into vermouth. In 1786, Antonio Benedetto Carpano invented modern sweet vermouth in Turin, Italy, using an infusion of 30 different herbs. It quickly became popular with the ladies, who viewed it as a welcome alternative to the coarse red wine of the period. In the early years of the nineteenth century, Joseph Noilly first concocted dry vermouth. Both versions were widely consumed throughout the century as an aperitif by those who thought the drink had curative powers, and by consumers who
figured that a glass or two might be a preemptive strike against disease. With the advent of the cocktail toward the end of the nineteenth cenury, bartenders discovered the versatility of vermouth in mixing with spirits of all sorts. It played a much more central role in cocktails than it does today—curiously, vermouth was the foundation of the drink back then, and the spirit was the accent, rather than the other way around. Early martinis were composed primarily of dry vermouth, with a small amount of gin added for structure as well as flavor. Similarly, a Manhattan consisted of some whiskey added to a base of sweet vermouth. While technology and mass production have improved the quality of many products, this hasn’t been the case with vermouth. The most popular modern brands are almost caricatures of themselves—reds that are cloyingly sweet and whites that are

mouth-puckeringly tart. By contrast, try Noilly Prat, the current version of the wine originally made by Joseph Noilly in 1813 and sometimes referred to as “the Rolls-Royce of vermouth.” The crisp, dry white derives its complexity from extended aging in oak barrels, while the red is augmented with 20 different botanicals. Two of the most famous vermouths are technically not vermouths at all. Dubonnet, a sweet aperitif containing quinine, was first made in 1846. It was actually an entry in a contest run by the French government, which was trying to come up with a concoction that would get Foreign Legionnaires in North Africa to consume quinine for combating malaria. It reached
delicate and floral than many of the massmarket brands. The king of all sweet vermouths is Carpano Antica, supposedly made according to Antonio Benedetto Carpano’s original formula. While it’s not cheap—a bottle costs $35, compared to $18 for Dolin and $12 for Martini & Rossi—it has a richness, complexity and nuanced flavor that must be tasted to be believed. u HILL 1056 NI 2012 Island Ad.2_Layout 6 1/23/12 6:40 PM Page 1

Francis Ford Coppola’s Mesoamerican resorts offer luxury and adventure. By PAUL RUBIO
Encouraged by the popularity of upscale eco-tourism in Costa Rica, nearby Belize and Guatemala have eagerly followed suit. Far left and above: Blancaneaux Lodge offers relaxation, nature hikes and private pools. La Lancha (left and below) is a peaceful retreat on Guatamala’s Lake Petén Itzá. Opening page: Riverside dining in the rainforest at Blancaneaux
While best known for The Godfather films in the United States and Europe, the name Francis Ford Coppola is synonymous with luxury in Belize and Guatemala. Since Coppola unveiled Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize’s Maya Mountains nearly 20 years ago, his Mesoamerican empire has spread to the shores of Belize’s Placencia Peninsula with Turtle Inn and to neighboring Guatemala with La Lancha, situated near the ancient city of Tikal. With excellent tourism infrastructure between each of the three lodges, visitors to the Coppola resorts are privy to a highly varied and incredibly sumptuous Central American sampler platter, even when coming for short visits. In the heart of the Maya Mountains, Blancaneaux Lodge peers over the serene Privassion Creek. In a region robust with mysterious caves, dramatic waterfalls, hiking trails and exalted Mayan sites such as Caracol, Blancaneaux is a playground for novice outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy heavy doses of nature but even heavier doses of pampering and bragging rights. Mornings filled with short hikes and excursions searching for tracks of the elusive jaguar are followed by afternoons at the on-site Thai spa, enjoying poolside libations while listening to bird calls, swaying in a riverside hammock, or indulging in the homemade Italian food from the on-site restaurant, Montagna Ristorante. As for the 64 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
dwellings themselves, the private plunge pools and the outdoor shower gardens of the deluxe cabanas elevate the experience of bonding with nature. Just three hours west of Blancaneaux in Guatemala’s Maya heartland, La Lancha is a resplendent retreat where the rainforest meets the sparkling waters of Lake Petén Itzá. The 10-room boutique lodge offers instant im-
mersion into the best of Guatemala. Perched at eye level with the forest canopy, the enclave teems with colorful birdlife and charismatic howler monkeys. The authentic Guatemalan gastronomy delights, falling nothing short of experiential. The bold tapestries and fascinating masks adorning the interiors define a true sense of place and contribute to an ambience of cozy and unpretentious luxury. In close proximity to the majestic ruins at Tikal, the excitement here is palpable. At least two days should be dedicated for excursions to these renowned archaeological sites. Besides lending insight into the demise of pre-Columbian Maya civilization, the wonders of Tikal rise to glory in the middle of a national park, granting more opportunities for superb wildlife viewing. Back along Belize’s central coastline on the quiet Placencia Peninsula, Coppola’s Turtle Inn is a thatch-roofed beachfront retreat that rivals the Caribbean’s most exclusive resorts. Located near the world’s second-largest barrier reef, snorkeling and diving trips are often high on the agenda here. Yet those seeking more than underwater rhapsody will revel in the full gamut of haute fun-in-the-sun activities, from floating sundecks to the spa’s alfresco mega-pavilions to the five themed on-site restaurants and bars. coppolaresorts.com u

Our passion for dining was ignited by our parents, who were particular about the quality of food they prepared for us. For generations our family did not just eat – we feasted. Like most Neapolitans, we’re transplants – from Long Island, N.Y. – who are devoted to our new hometown. We love attracting diners to the fun, energetic vibe of Noodles Italian Café & Sushi Bar. BLACK MAGIC Conjure up your inner James Bond behind the wheel of the extraordinary Aston Martin V12 Vantage Carbon Black Edition. BY HOWARD WALKER
It was hard, really hard, to resist the temptation to suit up in my finest bib ’n tucker—that’s Brit-speak for a dinner jacket—just to slide elegantly behind the wheel. And I admit there were times when the urge to skip my usual beverage of choice and order a vodka martini, shaken, definitely not stirred, did become overwhelming. My wife, however, was far from amused at being subjected to two days of my calling her Pushy Galore, delivered in my finest Sean Connery Scottish brogue. Driving an Aston Martin, any Aston Martin, does that to you. Slot the crystal transmitter key into the ignition—surely a creation of that master British Secret Service gizmo wizard, “Q”—and you become Bond, James Bond, 007, with a license to thrill. After piloting an Aston DBS in the previous two Bond escapades—Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace—no one is letting on whether Daniel Craig will be back piloting an Aston in the next 007 episode, called Skyfall, due in theaters November 9. But if the producers have an ounce of sense, it should be the menacing and completely breathtaking Aston Martin V12 Vantage Carbon Black Edition I’ve been driving. The Vantage is the smallest, most compact model in the Aston lineup. It usually comes with a 420-horsepower V-8 providing the 66 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
magic. But, just because they could, the A-M engineers shoehorned the company’s most potent power plant, the 6.0-liter, 510-hp, V-12 nuclear reactor, beneath the car’s lightweight aluminum hood. This is a little like strapping an Exocet missile to the back of a golf cart. Stomp on the throttle from standstill and 60 mph comes up in a mere 4.4 seconds, and the tsunami of torque doesn’t quit until the speedo needle is kissing the 190-mph mark. A word here about noise. This V12 Vantage has more voices than Linda Blair in The Exorcist—from the violent rrrrapppp as the engine fires up to the race-car-like scream as the revs pass 4,000 to the burbles, barks and pops as you snap off the throttle. The first time I experienced this blood-curdling aural crescendo, I had to go home and take a cold shower. Believe me, you’d buy this car just to hear it sing. But the V12 isn’t just about a sensuous soundtrack. This is the most agile car in the Aston lineup, and a car that rewards the presson driver with the purest of pure handling precision and lightswitch responses. Even compared to the V8 Vantage, its spring rates are 45 percent stiffer and its anti-roll bars uprated to give the torsional stiffness of an I-beam. At each corner, the 19-inch Pirelli PZero
Corsa rubberware is as wide as oil drums and offers the stickiness of flypaper. Of course, in the pursuit of purism, you’ll have to embrace the bone-hard ride—run over a quarter and you’ll know whether it’s the George Washington side. That, and the constant pitter-patter and bump-thump of the Pirellis over anything but pool-tablesmooth asphalt. A Lexus it’s not. And there’s no fancy dual-clutch automatic on the options list. Here, your only choice is a he-man six-speed manual controlled by a polished billet aluminum shifter so big and beefy it could have come out of a Peterbilt.
But even if I never drove this car and mounted it on my living room wall instead, I’d be a happy man. From every single angle, this is automotive art at its finest. In its Carbon Black Edition guise, it is even more visually menacing. The $15-grand premium over the $183,535 sticker for the regular V12 Vantage buys you bespoke Carbon Black metallic paint (50 manhours to apply), as well as an interior swathed in Obsidian Black leather, new lightweight carbon fiber and Kevlar seats, and lashings of carbon fiber and Piano Black trim. Yes, Mr. Bond would love this latest and greatest Aston Martin. No doubt he’d think of it as “From England With Love.” u

The Grant Committee of the Naples Children & Education Foundation spends months reviewing the applications and needs of various charities to decide how to distribute the funds raised each year at the Naples Winter Wine Festival. But other important selections and pairings are made throughout the year, including choosing the chefs and the vintners for the festival’s highly successful vintner dinners, held the night before the auction at the homes of festival trustees. Since 2001 when the festival started, 130 chefs have come to Naples to showcase their culinary skills for discerning diners. Festival trustees try to lure the best and the brightest culinary talent to pair with vintners from around the world. Karen Scott, a festival trustee who is on the chef selection committee for the 2013 festival, says planners consult several culinary awards lists, and consider recommendations from trustees and other chefs. The trustees seek a mix of celebrity chefs and up-and-coming talent from notable restaurants around the country. “Letters go out telling chefs who has come in the past, what the event is all about,” Scott says. “We try to change it up year to year.” Still, chefs like the event so much, they often return. Tom Colicchio has come to the festival six times, Tony Mantuano and Norman Van Aken, five times each, and Emeril Lagasse, Daniel

Boulud, Lee Hefter and Rick Tramonto, four times each. For many chefs, the opportunity to get out of their kitchens and meet other chefs, as well as to meet and work with vintners for the top-ranked charity wine festival in the world, is hard to resist. “It’s a change of scenery for them,” Scott says. “What’s hard about Naples in January? For the chefs, it’s like a fraternity. They know one another and they have chef-only functions during the weekend.” Although the weather in Naples may be attractive, it may not be great in the locations where the chefs are traveling from. In 2010, the arrival of some chefs was delayed by rough winter weather in New York. They did get into Naples in time, but not without creating some panicked dinner hosts. Serving as a chef at the festival requires a lot of planning, so many of them prepare as much as possible in advance, and prefer to bring their own knives, ingredients and staff. Some chefs first see the kitchen where they will be working to feed 24 to 40 diners when they arrive. As a result, many of the visiting chefs partner with local chefs to locate additional ingredients if necessary and to make sure everything is in place when they get there. Each year, in order to accommodate the dinners planned, the goal is to attract 15 to 17 chefs to come and create. Festival chairs Terry and Bob Edwards will make the chef and vintner pairings for 2013 after the festival’s vintner chair makes recommendations based on wines and cuisine, considering hosts’ wine preferences. After the vintner dinners on Friday of the festival, chefs from The Ritz-Carlton Resorts create an auction-day culinary showcase. All the food and wine is designed to get attendees ready to raise their paddles and their glasses—2,500 of them—the day of the auction. u NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2012 83
In Good Time The best time to pop the cork on a bottle of wine can be confusing. We’re here to help. By Mark Spivak 84 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
The Vineyards at Littorai Opposite page: Barrel room at Château des Jacques
Determining the perfect moment to drink a bottle of wine can be one of trickiest endeavors on Earth. The wild cards are almost endless—region, producer, vintage and style are all factors, and storage conditions also play a key role. As a result, both amateurs and connoisseurs frequently make mistakes. Sometimes our curiosity gets the better of us, and we consume wines in their infant stage; just as often, we hang on to our favorites too long and drink them past their peak. Assuming proper handling and storage, the following wines should be showing their best right now. Some are current releases, while others are classics that have matured over time. In selecting the older vintages, a major criterion was that the wines had to be available at a range of retailers, either locally or by mail order. Price also was a factor. Although 1982 Château Latour may be superlative at the moment, few of us are going to pay $2,500 per bottle for the privilege of experiencing it. Littorai Pinot Noir, Cerise Vineyard, Anderson Valley, 2006 ($75) Ted Lemon of Littorai just might be making the
best Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California. Lemon apprenticed at Domaine Dujac, became the first American to work as a vineyard manager in Burgundy, and then came home to start his own winery. The Cerise is medium-bodied and rich, with unctuous flavors of black fruits and kirsch offset by excellent acidity. Like many of Littorai’s offerings, it only shows its best after five or six years in the bottle. Hidden Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma, 2007 ($40) Hidden Ridge is an exercise in “extreme winemaking.” The vineyard is located off Spring Mountain Road in the Mayacamas Mountains at an elevation of 2,400 feet and a slope of 55 degrees. It is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicle and helicopter. It’s a powerful expression of mountaingrown Cabernet, with tart blackberry fruit, dusty tannins and sweet notes of powdered cocoa emerging on the long finish. Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay, Marlborough, New Zealand, 2009 ($50) At first glance, Te Koko breaks all the rules. It is fermented with wild yeast, allowed to undergo NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2012 85

malolactic fermentation, and even aged for 18 months in barrels before release. The result is an amazing style of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc—full-bodied and spicy, explosively aromatic, bursting with bright acidity and juicy citrus. It’s a wine with an Old World soul and all the exuberance we’ve come to expect from New Zealand’s signature grape. Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires, 1995 ($200) Blanc des Millénaires is a blanc de blancs, or a Champagne made exclusively from Chardonnay. Only four vintages have been produced in the modern era (1985, 1990, 1995 and 1999). It displays scents of vanilla and citrus on the nose, along with whiffs of brioche. It is ripe and fullbodied on the palate, with terrific acidity and mineral backbone; flavors of lemon, quince and bitter almond

linger on the finish. Decant this for the best results, and you will be rewarded. Clos de la Siete, Argentina, 2008 ($18) Craving flavor? Looking for a chewy and extremely well-made red at a remarkably reasonable price? Pick up a bottle of Clos de la Siete, an estate (really a collection of wineries) overseen by superstar winemaker Michel Rolland in Tunuyan, 50 miles south of Mendoza. Densely concentrated, filled with flavors of dark berry fruit and hints of plum, leather and chocolate, it makes a perfect match for grass-fed beef, lamb and slow-cooked stews. Kistler Sonoma Mountain Chardonnay, 2009 ($65) Steve Kistler first gained fame as a Pinot Noir producer, but this Chardonnay will take your breath away. It explodes in the mouth with bursts of citrus, yet the acidity is high, the texture is tight and bracing, and the mineral core is firm. In a blind tasting, this could pass for a top white Burgundy. Château des Jacques Moulin-à-Vent, 2009 ($25) Think all Beaujolais is Nouveau? Think again. The 10 crus are remarkably age-worthy, and a good Moulin-à-Vent can last nearly a decade. When Louis Jadot expanded into Beaujolais with its purchase of Château des Jacques, it brought the respectability of a great Burgundy producer to one of the world’s most underrated wines. Bursting with flavors of strawberry, raspberry and tart red currant, the 2009 will be satisfying for years to come.
The barrel room at Bertani in Verona, Italy
Northstar Merlot, Columbia Valley, 2007 ($50) This is a Merlot for Cabernet Sauvignon drinkers— concentrated and powerful, yet elegant and balanced at the same time. Flavors are intensified during the growing season by as much as a 40-degree swing between hot days and cool nights. It’s so good that even Miles from Sideways would like it. Bertani Amarone, 2003 ($110) Expensive? Sure, but consider this: This Italian beauty is only made in exceptional vintages, using the best grapes of the harvest, and spends up to eight years in cask before release. The reward is a wine both rich and bone-dry, infused with seductive hints of walnut husks and dried plums, equally at home with game dishes or strong cheeses. Joseph Drouhin, Beaune Clos des Mouches Blanc, 2009 ($80) Despite a widespread and necessary level of commercialization, every major Burgundy négociant has at least one wine that aspires to greatness. In Drouhin’s case, it’s the white Clos des Mouches. Profound minerality, striking acidity and sumptuous flavors of citrus and stone fruits make it distinctive from the moment of release. It can last and improve up to 10 years in a good vintage. Lemelson Pinot Noir, Thea’s Selection, Willamette Valley, 2009 ($30) Silky and smooth, this wine exhibits flavors of black cherry, raspberry and red plum against a solid mineral backbone. It goes equally well with salmon and white or red meats, and is an absolute pleasure to drink. If you’ve heard people raving about 2009 in Oregon, find out what all the fuss is about.

Casanova di Neri Brunello, Tenuta Nuova, 2005 ($75) Giacomo Neri inherited his father’s wine estate in 1991 and took it to a higher level, combining traditional techniques and modern innovation. The Tenuta Nuova, from a vineyard planted in 1985, is a riveting expression of Brunello di Montalcino—full-bodied yet seamless, with soft tannins and beautiful fruit. Domaine Sigalas Assyrtiko-Athiri, Santorini, 2010 ($20) This is definitely not your father’s retsina. The Sigalas winery was founded on the island of Santorini in 1991 and has become one of the leaders in the Greek wine renaissance. This white blend is richly concentrated, with a great deal of ripe citrus, palate weight and character. Château de Beaucastel, Châteauneuf-duPape, 2001 ($150) Beaucastel is the benchmark in Châteauneuf-duPape, as well as one of the world’s greatest wine estates. Dating to the sixteenth century, the vineyard produces wines with a high percentage of Mourvèdre and the capability for long-term aging. The 1989 and 1998 were classics, but the 2001 is not far behind: fullbodied and powerful, crammed with flavors of black-
berries, cherries, Provençal herbs, truffles and earth, it is a magnificent wine when paired with game, beef and slow-cooked stews. Les Tourelles de Longueville, Pauillac, 2007 ($45) Sometimes pedigree counts for everything. If you didn’t know that this was the second label of Château Pichon-Baron, you’d certainly figure out quickly that it was the product of well-placed vineyards and impeccable winemaking. Primarily Merlot, it is elegant and beautifully proportioned, with ripe blackberry flavors balanced against chalky tannins and toasty oak. Turnbull Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley, 2008 ($40) Turnbull is a remarkable bargain, considering that it comes from Oakville and its illustrious neighbors include Far Niente, Plumpjack and Dalla Valle. The 2008 is soft and supple, with spicy black fruit flavor packaged in an approachable style. Nicolas Feuillatte, Brut Champagne Cuvée Palmes D’Or, 1990 ($225) This luxury cuvée from Nicolas Feuillatte is a 50/50 blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is produced only from the best wines in exceptional vintages and
Vineyards at Château de Beaucastel, Rhône Valley, France
is the ultimate expression of the house style. Full-bodied and vibrant with a featherlight texture accented by hints of sherry, it is a stunning Champagne at the peak of perfection. Liberty School Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles, 2009 ($15) Cynics say that there’s no inexpensive California Cabernet worth drinking, but Liberty School proves them wrong. Grown and bottled by the Hope family, it is brimming with blackberry essence, crushed fresh herbs, bright acidity and integrated tannins. It’s delicious by itself or as an accompaniment to steaks, chops and grilled meats of all sorts. Pascal Jolivet Sancerre, 2010 ($25) Jolivet is the gold standard in Sancerre and the benchmark for unoaked Sauvignon Blanc—from the Loire Valley or anywhere else. The product of natural winemaking, it is filled with brilliant acidity and luscious citrus flavors. It’s a perfect match with creamy goat cheese, river or lake fish, and all types of shellfish. Marquis D’Angerville, Volnay Champans, 2008 ($90) Yes, Burgundy is a minefield—it is expensive, unpredictable and difficult to understand—but when you find a producer you like and trust, all will be revealed. The wines from D’Angerville are consistent and reliable, even in marginal vintages. In good years, they exemplify the combination of power and delicacy that makes Volnay so intriguing. This 2008 contains bright flavors of red fruits and earthy hints of mushroom and truffle that will amplify as the wine ages. u

Childs Play
Brian and Janet Childs create a contemporary setting in Port Royal for family life. by KATHY BECKER | photography by LORI HAMILTON
Brian and Janet Childs envisioned an indoor/ outdoor playground on the water in Port Royal. NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2012  91
Clockwise from top left: The great room flows from the entertainment area to the dining room to the kitchen under dark beams. The couple opted for a small living room, with ceiling details and a light shelf that provides dramatic effect. Molding on the entry and living room walls and dramatic lighting set the tone for the home. Wall design in the study is a contemporary version of a chair rail, with flat vertical and horizontal panels that complement the ceiling and floor design.
After building two other homes in Naples and a dental office, dentists Brian and Janet Childs learned through experience what they liked and didn’t like in a custom home. They used what they learned from living in the homes they built, and they toured model homes to get other ideas. “We looked at several models,” Janet says. “Hundreds,” Brian says. When they found an ideal lot on the water in Port Royal, they decided the time was right to build a house designed for the way they live. “In the past, the houses we built were built with resale in mind,” Janet says. “This time, we decided to build for our 92 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
needs; we built it the way we live.” With three sons, aged 20, 17 and 13, and a golden retriever, they needed a large, open living space that transitioned to the outdoor kitchen, dining area and pool. They also felt no need for a formal dining room, and preferred a small parlor instead of a large living room, which Janet was always told was needed for resale. “We wanted a great room,” Janet says. “We eliminated the formal dining room. We wanted it as open as possible.” “Ninety percent of our time is right here and on the deck,” Brian says. “We wanted to use every space.” The open kitchen, with a large island and dining stools, flows into the dining
area and on to the family room, which is furnished with couches and an entertainment center. “It was their idea to put the dining room table in the family room,” says interior designer Lisa Ficarra of Ficarra Design Associates, Naples. “That is what people are gravitating to. The family room is one big living space.” In their other homes, the Childses built additional guest suites, and one of their homes had a theater. “Our oldest son is in college,” Janet says. “We do have a bedroom for him, but our guests also stay there.” Although they did use the theater, they chose not to include one in the Port Royal home’s plan in order to enlarge other

spaces. Besides, with state-of-the-art electronics and automated systems by Criteria of Naples, they can turn their great room into a prime viewing spot or view on televisions outdoors. Brian made a sketch of a floor plan he liked, which Bill Weber of Weber Design Group, Naples, tweaked into a working plan for the home, built by BCB Homes, Naples. Ficarra helped the couple make the transition from more traditional Tuscan and Mediterranean interiors they had in their other homes to clean, contemporary style.
“They started out a little more casual,” Ficarra says. “But they ended up loving the contemporary lines. They were open to new designs and a fresh, clean, simple and sophisticated look.” “When we started making selections, we realized we wanted something different, more contemporary,” Brian says. “What we have now is a total departure from what we had before,” Janet says. Much of the home’s warmth comes from the kitchen, a room they are finding they use more now than they did in their other
homes. “We have become cooks,” Janet says. “We’ve had great kitchens before, but with more time now, we cook and bake all the time.” “She finally got her pantry, which is important when you have boys, and boys have friends,” Brian says. The pantry is one example of the ample storage included throughout the house, with custom closets and cabinets by Hogan Brothers, Naples, as well as both upstairs and downstairs laundry rooms. Brian was impressed with the expertise NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | APRIL 2012 95
Above: Glass tile, granite, and stainless steel pendants complement the metallic hues on the wall. Opposite, top: The wall unit in the family room was designed to encompass the complete wall, taking into consideration the placement of the windows overhead. The custom wood-finish shelves were designed to look like they are floating, and are lit from underneath to accent the glass collection. Bottom: Multilevel areas around the pool provide plenty of places to enjoy the view.
BCB brought to building the project. He points to a second-floor balcony over the pool that gently slopes to a small, unobtrusive center drain that keeps water from dripping over the edge of the house onto the lanai. “They were extremely picky,” Brian says of the builders. “Stuff we said was okay, they insisted on making right.” While their concrete floating dock gets fishing and kayak-launching action, Brian looks forward to one day having a power boat. The family also enjoys the pool, which has a shallow expansion at the base of the disappearing edge where they put an umbrella and chairs to be close to the dock. Love of Chihuly glass sculpture led to bright spots of color in the kitchen and on parlor walls, where blue-gray and subtle 96 NAPLES ILLUSTRATED
metallic hues contrast with the espresso flooring, dark beams and white marble. “They appreciated all the details,” Ficarra says. “They were a pleasure to work with; they wanted something unique and new.” The Childses were involved in many selections, including numerous choices for bathrooms and counters. “We had a lot of fun with our lighting,” Brian says. “I had fun picking out the stone, with different granite, onyx and other stones.” “They did a lot of research,” Ficarra says. “They were very hands-on and wanted to be involved in the whole process.” Ficarra helped with ceiling designs, which lack crown molding, and suggested interesting wall treatments. Ficarra designed the powder bath with stainless steel strips between tiles.
With the exception of some furniture in the boys’ rooms, the couple started over with new furnishings. “We have a lot fewer pieces,” Janet says, noting selections were made with their kids and the dog, Rusty, in mind. “Our kids and their friends hang out here. It’s all used.” “People sometimes see these contemporary places and think they aren’t really lived in,” Ficarra says. “Everything they have is user-friendly, functional. People don’t have to be hesitant to go in that direction. I think a lot of people are going for a simpler, cleaner look.” It’s a style the couple is happy to share with family and friends. “People who drop by know we are probably grilling or watching a game, and Rusty is probably swimming,” Brian says. u

The Sultan Gallery at KVS Interior Design, Bonita Springs, highlights local artists in shows during season. The final exhibit this season, titled “Outdoor Elements,” opens with a reception April 4. Featured artist Alexis MacIntire’s watercolor Studies of Lace, shown here, reflects her intent to allow a pattern to grow organically. “I pick a point on the blank page at random, and the pattern flows from there like ripples in water or clouds being shaped by the wind,” she says.

Country Time
Wine Tasters’ 2011 event at Lely
Support the Garden of Hope and Courage on the downtown Naples campus of NCH Healthcare System while enjoying first-class entertainment. The biennial Naples Music Festival returns April 1 with a fresh approach as the party goes country with Grammy Award-winning Diamond Rio, a band that has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. The all-VIP ticket packages include admission to the show under a tent in the lot behind Tommy Bahama, dinner at one of the restaurants in the Third Street South district, complimentary parking and more. The garden fulfills a dream held by the late Jan Emfield, who lost her battle with cancer, to create a peaceful sanctuary for cancer patients and families, hospital staff and others. For information, visit gardenofhopeandcourage.org.
Good Cheers Sky High Southwest Florida’s typically bright blue skies will be dotted with color in April during the area’s first Balloons Over Paradise Festival April 13-15 at the Immokalee International Airport. Organizer Seminole Casino Immokalee expects more than 30 air balloons. On the ground, the festivities will include food from area restaurants and live entertainment. The balloon event is held in conjunction with the Immokalee Harvest Festival. For information on all the weekend’s activities, see the events page at paradisecoast.com.
Wine Tasters of Naples will hold its third annual party for charity April 28 at The Players Club at Lely. This year’s event, titled “Under the Napoli Moon,” takes inspiration from Italy, with wine tasting and an Italian-themed buffet. The Songs for All Seasons Band and other local entertainers will provide music, and the evening includes a live and silent auction. The event, open to club members, Lely residents and the public, will benefit St. Matthew’s House, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children and Youth Haven. Last year, the group’s 600-plus attendees raised $90,000 for a variety of local charities. For information on the Wine Tasters of Naples and the event, visit winetastersofnaples.com.

American Beauty Claiborne Swanson Frank has lived surrounded by beautiful women and design, starting with her mother, Elizabeth Pipes Swanson, and sisters, fashion designer Veronica Beard, and Alexis Trainer, head of marketing at Swanson Winery in Napa Valley. Her mother-in-law is Cynthia Frank, Elle Décor’s contributing editor at large. Before the women in her life inspired her to pursue photography, Swanson Frank moved to New York as a fashion stylist, and worked as assistant to Vogue editorin-chief Anna Wintour. Her first photo exhibit, a series of 29 portraits of her sisters and friends, was shown at the Akris showroom in New York during Fashion Week. Her first book, American Beauty, released by Assouline, includes portraits of 120 women in art, fashion, interior design and business. Swanson Frank will be at Marissa Collections for a book signing April 5 at 2 p.m. The store also will host a cocktail reception that evening for jewelry designer Tamara Comolli.

GIVING BACK
Educating Hearts By Christina Wells
Carol and Patrick Moore share a deep commitment to Catholic education and service to others. Their beliefs inspired the founding of Royal Palm Academy in 1998. “The school opened its doors with six students in three trailers on a dusty, rented field on Golden Gate Parkway,” Carol says. “The goal was to inspire children to achieve their personal best through a vigorous academic program and to educate their hearts to give back.” “Carol and I felt that the North Naples community deserved to have a school that offered a highly academic, private education in the Catholic tradition,” Patrick says. “We wanted our graduates prepared to go to Harvard and to heaven.” In 2001, Royal Palm Academy relocated to its current 12-acre campus on Living ston Road with 68 students. Currently, 250 students are enrolled at the school in prekindergarten through eighth grade. “Students at Royal Palm Academy sweep local poetry and essay contests, place at state finals in science fair competitions, and finish top in statewide high school math competitions,” Carol says. The tradition of philanthropy was established for Carol through the example set by her parents, Jack and Rhodora Donahue. “There is not enough space here to elaborate on the number of Catholic and other charities, as well as Catholic education endeavors that my parents have founded, funded or influenced,” Carol says. “Luckily, my husband shares that same passion for charitable giving.” As for the future of Royal Palm Academy, the property will be built out with permanent structures and a gym, with a goal of housing and educating 450 students. “Truly, though, buildings have never been what goes on inside the walls of the school is second to none,” Patrick says. u
