KAREN TYRRELL
It’s nice to meet you. I am so happy to be in Naples, but I have to admit when I first visited five years ago, I never imagined I’d be living and working here. It was my kids’ spring break, and we were checking out the area for fun, and a little bit of work for me. I had a meeting set with Kathy McKeon, a friend of a friend, whom I’d been helping pull together a book proposal for her memoir. Kathy and her husband, Seamus, live half the year in Marco Island, and they welcomed the five of us (my husband, Michael, my older daughter, Piper, and my boy/girl twins, Thomas and Remy) into their home with bright smiles and beautiful Irish brogues. I could have stayed and listened to Kathy’s stories about her time working for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for hours, but the Gulf was calling, and we had plans. Less than two years later, Kathy published Jackie’s Girl and landed on The New York Times best-seller list. (You can read more about her and other local authors on pages 122 and 123.) So, for me, writing this editor’s letter feels like a full-circle moment. Now that I’m settling into Naples, which isn’t too hard of an adjustment after already living in Florida for seven years, I’m having fun teaming up with publisher Kaleigh Grover and our awesome sales crew starring Kathy Beuttel and Meegan Wyatt. They have given me the warmest welcome, as has everybody in Palm Beach Media Group. As the new girl, one thing I learned quickly was that the Naples Illustrated bunch genuinely cares about this community. And I can see why. The more time I spend here, the more wonderful people I connect with. I have even met some in person—from a safe distance—a thrill in this wacky COVID-19 era. One standout is Mary Brandt, owner of Hotel Escalante in Naples, who graciously let us shoot our cover story, “Leading with Heart,” on her amazing property. Five of my favorite new faces are featured in this article, beginning on page 52. When so much is uncertain, getting to know these young Neapolitans is uplifting and reassuring. I believe our world is in good hands with Millennials and Generation Z coming down the pike. Need more convincing? Check out our Insider profile on page 21 with Leif Johnson from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida or Favorite Things on page 128 with Ashley Dewji, the newest (and perhaps most enthusiastic) member of the Gulfshore Playhouse board. In late June, Michael, our three Gen Z’ers, and I, plus our rescue mutt, Tilley, committed to getting to know Naples from a local’s perspective. We ate our way through town, munching at Lake Park Diner, Kareem’s, Barbatella, Celebration Park, and Black Sheep Pizza. We burned some of it off by walking and swimming at Vanderbilt Beach and Clam Pass Beach and wave running in the Gulf. I can’t wait to have more family fun in town, and I can’t wait to learn more about Naples and all of you.

Q&A
THE GO-TO GUY The past five years in Naples have marked some of the biggest and best moments in Leif Johnson’s life: He launched his career as a biologist at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, he met his fiancé, Katie Ferron, and he was “astounded by the beauty of Clam Bay, again and again, while studying the mangroves in the area.” This handy outdoorsman grew up on a farm and graduated from UMass Amherst with a bachelor’s in natural resource conservation. He’s made himself indispensable to his colleagues in the Conservancy’s science department by repairing ATVs and getting involved in several ongoing projects, such as the Picayune Strand restoration project. He notes that if you look at a map of Collier County, “70 to 80 percent of it is conservation land, and it’s a water world.” On the next page, we chat with Johnson about turtles, microbrews, and more. (conservancy.org)

If you get lucky when out thrifting in Naples, you might unearth a Fendi bag with a geometric theme or an Hermès stainless steel pendant.
NEW & NOW THE GO-TO GUY CONT. NI: What’s up with the turtle project on Keewaydin Island? Johnson: I’m out there three nights a week looking for nesting sea turtles to measure and tag. This data collection is incredible, going on for 40 years. We see loggerheads and occasionally green sea turtles. Turtles lay around 100 eggs, and the survival rate is astronomically low, so it’s important that we protect them from predators like coyotes, wild hogs, and racoons, and get hatchlings out to sea. Do any assignments put you in the water? Yes, the endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles project. I’ll go on a boat to Ten Thousand Islands and Rookery Bay and try to catch them in a mullet skiff with an outboard engine. We throw the net out back, and it’s the most ridiculous game of hide-and-seek. We wait for a turtle head to pop up for a breath. When we get one, my co-worker, who’s been doing it for 30 years, puts satellite tags on them to track their movements. Also, we try to get a poop sample to study their diet. A most surprising find is that they are considered crab eaters, but they switch to eating sponges and tunicates, which are invertebrates on the sea floor. Where do you hang out when you’re not on turtle duty? I prefer to be on a boat, but my fiancé and I will go to Park Shore Beach because it’s the closest to my house. We also love going down south of the pier to Bad Ass Coffee, and then to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, Third Street Café, which serves massive breakfast sandwiches. We grab all that and go to the beach in the morning. I also like microbreweries, and Beach Brewery and Ankrolab are good. Felipe’s is a reoccurring theme in my life, and so is the margarita on the rocks and the burrito bowl. Do you have a favorite local outdoor adventure place? There’s so much research on how nature is good for your mental and physical health. Check out the Greenway here in Naples; it’s an incredible resource. Everywhere needs to have more greenways— easy access to a natural area that’s big enough to get away from roads and traffic. I love going camping with my fiancé, to get away from the noise of the city and disconnect for a bit. Camping is funny, though. It makes you appreciate everything you have at home when you get back, like a shower. 22
THRIFTING THRILLS One upside of the COVID-19 shut-in was finally having time at home to tick projects off your to-do list. For some glamorous Naples women, that translated into cleaning out their closets and bringing glorious castoffs to local consignment vendors. This means there’s a plethora of covet-worthy, high-end, designer goods in excellent condition at local consignment stores. Buying clothing and accessories on consignment is a fun way to enhance your fall wardrobe and support sustainable fashion. Check out a quick sampling of what’s been available lately in these stylish shops.

INSIDER FLIGHT MAP
Personal PLANE Neapolitans may still have the want or need to fly, even though the coronavirus pandemic has devasted the commercial air travel industry. While the July Fourth weekend saw a bump in domestic and international flights from the spring, summer travel was significantly down compared to 2019. So, if you’ve got the travel bug but are not yet ready to fly commercial, what about flying private? To navigate this decision, NI caught up with Stephen Myers, vice president at Elite Jets. Myers, who also captains one of the Naples-based aviation company’s Phenom 300 planes, says he and his colleagues have seen “a lot of firsttime private travelers.” Here, he shares insight into what passengers can expect from this exclusive method of air travel. (elitejets.com)
Clockwise from inset: An Elite Jets Legacy 500 plane is runway ready; inside one of Elite Jets’ Phenom 300 planes; Stephen Myers, a Phenom 300 pilot.
• Leave when you want without having to show up at an airport two hours ahead of time. • Enter the first-class private terminal and gate through a company access and enjoy a lobby that allows for social distancing. Or, if you want more privacy, drive out on the ramp. • Load your own luggage on the plane if you don’t want anyone touching your belongings.
• Meet and greet the pilot, co-pilot, and crewmembers with their masks on. However, pilots are not allowed to wear masks when flying in case they need oxygen. • Relax knowing that fresh air comes in to the plane from the front and gets sucked out the back, so new air is in constant circulation. The cabin is cleaned with an antiseptic fogging after every flight, and the aircraft is wiped down with sanitizers. • Bring your cat or dog, provided you give Elite Jets the appropriate heads up. • Pay depending on which of the three types of Elite Jet aircrafts you choose, how far you are going, if the fight is nonstop, and if there’s a return trip. Costs are not per ticket but per aircraft and vary from roughly $8,000 to $80,000. It doesn’t matter if it’s one passenger or eight passengers. • BYO water, wine, snacks, and newspapers. You get to shape the experience.
PODCASTS FROM PARADISE This part of the Gulf Coast has inspired several creative types to record and publish their own podcast series on everything from true crime in Florida to living the ultimate golf lifestyle. Below, we highlight two newbies to tune in to.

Nesting in Naples with host Vera Jaye of Jaye Design in Naples is an homage to the coastal area she adores. While she officially premiered the podcast in July, Jaye is in the process of building up enough quality episodes to launch on Spotify in October. For now, you can listen to her chat with local guests including father-and-son craftsmen Dave and Thomas Staber of Dave Staber Woodworking and entrepreneur Karl Gibbons of Third Eye Management on her website. Shellcast, the podcast of The Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel, debuted in June and is hosted by Jackie Parker. This show sets the scene with natural sounds of waves crashing and winds blowing, all peppered with stories from notable inhabitants who share historical tidbits and their take on life on the water. Of particular interest is a sandy stroll with Dorrie Hipschman, executive director of the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. Download that episode and more on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and iHeartRadio. (fortmyers-sanibel.com)

A Grey Oaks vacation home captivates with first-rate finishes and functionality By Mary Thurman Yuhas | Photography by Venjhamin Reyes Creating a dream home from scratch is exhilarating and exhausting, especially if you’re doing it from a distance. Despite being several hours and miles away, the owners of a Grey Oaks new build found it easy to frequently communicate with Michael Scott, senior design director at Naples-based Romanza Interior Design. Scott’s goal was to keep his clients from being overwhelmed with all the decisionmaking, while pushing them out of their conservative design box during the construction of their idyllic seasonal home. Situated in the Estuary at Grey Oaks in Naples, the magnificent

but relaxed six-bedroom, 8,000-square-foot residence rests on a site overflowing with organic beauty. A color palette of various shades of sand and splashes of aquatic blues and greens augments the grand home’s waterfront style. Natural stones and crèma marble flooring run throughout the residence. For textural interest, different neutral hues and design elements were applied to the home’s massive concrete exterior. Verandas, porches, columns, and the flat, dark brown concrete tile roof mimicking weathered cedar roofs are all nods to coastal design. Resembling brick pavers, the faux cement driveway leads to the ivory marble pavers in the courtyard where a ceramic glazed, aqua blue recirculating fountain hints at the color palette throughout the interior. “We started with the coastal style they liked; everything is userfriendly with the clean elegance they desired,” Scott says. “The interior and exterior are classic coastal architecture. A full millwork package inside allowed the ceiling and wall details to shine, while furnishings were more understated in neutral tones that offered a more transitional look.” Abundant seating in the kitchen accommodates the many family gatherings the clients host throughout the year. Both the custom dining 36
chairs and rattan barstools at the large, walnut, louvered island are intentionally heavy, ensuring safety for playful children. Artfully hidden behind the armoire is a refrigerator/freezer. Extending from the kitchen into the open family room, the perimeter of the ceiling is a stained cedar plank with white wood box beams. Heavy woven wallpaper fabricated from crushed coconut fronds was applied to the ceiling. Repeating the blue from the kitchen barstools, the massive media

cabinet in the open-concept kitchen/family room holds an 85-inch TV, perfect for family movie nights. Working in concert, the television and the home’s multifunctional control center provide entertainment, gaming, lighting, and security. Calfskin leather recliners in the bright and breezy space are as comfortable as they appear. Not surprisingly, this gracious dining and relaxation area is the client’s favorite indoor spot. “Most of our clients are looking for a state-of-the-art home,” says Scott. “They want the most technology, and in furnishings, they want functionality, comfort, and durability.” Crypton fabric on the sofa and armchairs in the slightly more formal living room continues the livability theme that defines the residence. Crema marble on the custom gas fireplace wall extends up to the 11-foot-high, traditionally coffered ceiling. Painted turquoise on the inside of the cabinetry reflects the blues on the bespoke pillows. A made-to-order silver leaf chandelier imparts a touch of glamour. French doors open to the exterior living area. Unabashedly masculine, his study features blueberry-stained, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry and a custom desk fabricated to his needs. A tropical woven wallpaper relaxes the space, while a Persian rug pulls the room together. Outside, the fabulous outdoor living area backs up to a lake, a golf course, and a preserve. “They wanted to be able to entertain the whole family with a sun area, a spa that was isolated from the pool, and a water feature that could be seen from inside the house,” Scott says. Canary Island date palms dot the luxurious aquatic area, which rivals that of a five-star resort. Imbued with bold turquoise hues, the space feels almost as one with Southwest Florida’s beautiful blue sky. “The homeowners use the house quite often and have since enjoyed many carefree vacations and holidays here,” Scott says.

Inside the lanai, the two sitting areas (one with a fire pit coffee table) and a dining space with an outdoor kitchen are made even more enjoyable by disappearing screens that advance and retreat via remote control, providing instant sun and insect protection. Lined with a striking turquoise glass tile and a pebble finish on the floor, the pool includes two sun shelves—one is shallow for the grandbabies and the other has lounge chairs with an umbrella. Part of the charm of this outdoor retreat are the three vessels in the custom water feature that provide soothing ambient sound effects. Three stepping stones separate the pool area from the spa. The happiest of their guests utilize all the outdoor elements and make a splash in the pool before coming up for air with a smile.

Add broad strokes of elegance and tranquility with sweeping PASTEL HUES SERENITY NOW Lisa Kahn of Lisa Kahn Designs focused on three primary components when creating this serene, sanctuary-like bedroom: color, texture, and symmetry. “This is one of my favorite bedrooms of all time,” she says. “Soft, luminous greens and blues give an overall atmosphere of harmony and calm. To keep the room from being overly youthful, I layered textures like woven fabrics, mirror, capiz shell, alabaster, beads, and wood for a sophisticated effect. The balanced composition of two beds with the chest in between and two lamps gives a feeling of organized equilibrium.” Naples (lisakahndesigns.com)

T
hose who have traveled to private islands know the allure well. Being on a sliver of beach with 360 degrees of water between you and civilization feels like a Crusoe-esque fantasy, with the added advantages of hyper-attentive service, indulgent cuisine, and accommodations with a true sense of place. Beyond the obvious luxe factor, isolating from the world and all its distractions, not to mention distancing from others during a pandemic, feels urgent right now.
But where to go? The Maldives? French Polynesia? The Fijian archipelago? Between health concerns and travel restrictions, private island dreams are being shelved, but they don’t have to be. Not when there’s Little Palm Island, in our own Florida Keys. Even given a choice of exclusive islands worldwide, this reimagined gem should be at the top of the must-go list. Closed for renovations since Hurricane Irma blew through Florida in September 2017, Little Palm Island has reopened with a new design that feels familiar but is much elevated. The design team, Rossi Architecture of San Diego and New York–based AvroKo, took a cue from No. 33—President Harry S. Truman famously spent time on the island in the 1940s—to create an exclusive social-club aesthetic with all the luxuries but none of the pretense. The experience begins at the Shore Station at Little Torch Key, where guests await the boat launch, one of which is aptly named The Truman, amid British West Indies–style furniture and paddle fans. If that’s not enough to elicit a tropical vibe, the rum-rich Gumby Slumber will surely do the trick. The four-acre island is only a 15-minute boat ride away, but it feels like a whole other world. Sandy paths lined with sea grapes and palms lead to thatched-roof bungalows reminiscent of treehouses. The bungalow suites range in size from 550 to 1,020 square feet and come with broad decks, made of wood planks and bamboo, and private beaches appointed with lounge chairs and, in some cases, fire pits and hammocks. The new design is an updated interpretation of 1940s style, with vaulted bamboo ceil-

ings, tactile fabrics, textures ranging from rush to rattan, and the sparkle of crystal. The four-poster beds, encircled by sheers, are the most comfortable this side of, well, anywhere. There are nods to a bygone era—a black rotary-dial telephone, for instance—and there are no televisions in the rooms, which is a clever way to make you feel like you’ve stepped back to a simpler time. Which is not to say that the place lacks modern indulgences. Top among these is the dining program, helmed by Danny Ganem, previously with The Betsy in Miami. Using a cornucopia of local seafood and produce, Ganem crafts inspired island cuisine and continuously changes the menu to surprise and delight guests. There’s elegant indoor dining, but the real story here is the outdoor seating, particularly the coveted tables in the sand, right at the water’s edge. In the summer, you may have to share space with turtle nests, which just adds to the authenticity. For breakfast, opt for room service and let the staff lay out a gorgeous morning spread on your deck, where you can easily transition to that hammock or an outdoor copper tub. With self-care such a priority at the moment, the new SpaTerre is a necessity. The treatment rooms are oriented around a two-story atrium that recalls the patina of an old Cuban mansion, with clay-tile floors, British Colonial furnishings, and tropical plants galore. Like the ambience, the services will put you in another state of mind. If the conditions are right, opt for the Madrugada, offered only at sunrise. The therapists place the massage table in the shallows, and for 80 blissful minutes you receive healing body work while listening to the sigh of the

surf and the sounds of nature. It’s absolutely transformative. For those who prefer to be active, the sky’s the limit. Choose among kayaking to the mangroves, paddleboarding, backcountry flats fishing, reef diving excursions, sailing, and Dry Tortugas day trips, to name a few. Whatever your pleasure, the Little Palm Island “personal escape planner” is only a (rotary-dial) phone call away. (littlepalm island.com) «

ESCAPE TRAVEL JOURNAL
The Optimistic JET-SETTER
Though she pays her bills from her apartment in Long Island City, New York, Christina Galbato, a 2015 Villanova University graduate with a bachelor’s in communications and public relations, loves spending big blocks of weeks in Naples each year. You’ll find her strolling Fifth Avenue, dining at Campiello or Bha Bha, and sipping cocktails at The Continental. This year, she extended her stay and made the most of her time getting to know the area better and hanging out with her parents, who are full-time residents. The luxury travel blogger appreciates everything that Naples offers. “Naples is the epitome of Floridian charm and easy living,” Galbato says. “It’s a welcome break from the bustle of New York City and travel in general, especially during winter.” This professional suitcase-packer works with tourism boards and hotels around the world, promoting them to her blog audience at christinagalbato.com. Since many aspects of the travel industry are in flux, she reminisced on where she’s been and reflected on where she plans to go. —Christina Cush
NI: What are your hopes for the travel industry? Galbato: My main hope is that travel picks up again. Domestically, Delta has done a great job at blocking off middle seats in economy and enforcing social distancing during the boarding process. Abroad, Qatar Airways stepped up with the cabin crew wearing full-body protective gear.
From above: Spa suite at The Peninsula in Bangkok; Iskender, one of Galbato’s favorite Turkish delicacies; the Mandarin Oriental in Bodrum, Turkey.
Where have you been that you’d love to revisit? Turkey has delicious food, diverse and beautiful landscapes, and the kindest people. And I have memories of Jordan that I’ll cherish forever: Seeing the ancient city of Petra and visiting Wadi Rum, a region that looks like Mars. When’s your next big international trip? My first trip abroad that I have planned is in September to Mexico. Then in October, I have a trip planned to Tahiti and Bora Bora. What kind of domestic travel looks interesting? Out West. I’d love to rent a camper van and explore Utah and Arizona. What’s the best hotel you’ve stayed at? The Mandarin Oriental in Bodrum, Turkey. It’s an absolutely stunning resort on the Aegean Sea.
What’s the best meal you’ve had on a trip? It’s a Turkish dish called Iskender. It’s thinly sliced lamb and pita bread topped with tomato sauce, butter, and yogurt. I cried tears of joy from how delicious it was. What’s the best spa treatment you’ve had on a big trip? A Thai massage at The Peninsula in Bangkok. The idea of closing my eyes while someone contorted and stretched my body freaked me out, but it turned out to be my favorite spa treatment. Plus, you get a private spa suite with a jacuzzi overlooking the city. What are your go-to travel resources? The Points Guy is my go-to website for all things travel hacking. What are a few things you can’t travel without? Monos Luggage, Tatcha Dewy Skin Moisturizer, Langiege Lip Mask, compression socks, and the Google Translate app. What’s still on your bucket list? I love the Middle East, so I want to spend more time there and visit the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and Lebanon. Then places in Africa like Tanzania, South Africa, and Namibia.

This trait comes courtesy of the latest iteration of Mercedes-AMG’s hand-assembled 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. The twist here is the 48-volt electric motor system—deemed EQ Boost—sandwiched between the engine and the 9-speed automatic. It’s called a mild hybrid, though there’s nothing mild about it. What EQ Boost does is provide an instant jolt of electric muscle (an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque) for when you need some grunt, such as off-the-line acceleration and zipping past slower traffic. Yet the real beauty is the V-8’s Dr. Jekyll–and–Mr. Hyde persona. When

it’s not acting like the motor out of a top-fuel dragster, it’s a pussycat. Cruise around town, amble along the interstate, idle away in a Starbucks drivethru, and it plays all nice and quiet. It’ll even deactivate four of its eight cylinders to boost fuel economy. If this tire-shredding performance sounds impressive, wait until you hurl this red-hot GLE along a curvy backroad. With standard AMG Active Ride Control air suspension that includes adaptive damping, the Merc pretty much does away with body roll. It’s truly otherworldly how this tall-riding sport-ute can fire through a series of squiggly S-bends with the precision and agility of a low-slung, two-seat sports car. Talk of understeer and oversteer is redundant because it goes where you point it—and at ridiculous velocities. This SUV has the bold looks to match its brain-frying speed. I love that toothy grille inspired by the old Mercedes Carrera Panamericana racers of the early ’50s. The chrome-ringed, air-gulping lower section beneath it is just as tantalizing. Throw in some AMG side skirts under the doors, body-painted flared wheel arches at each corner, and a

quartet of polished exhaust finishers at the back, and the 63 S appears as muscular as Sylvester Stallone in his Rocky days. The craftsmanship of the interior is also second to none. Expect perforated Nappa leather–trimmed seats, an awesome AMG leather wheel, brushed stainless-steel pedals, and some lovely carbon fiber trim. Price of entry to the Merc-AMG GLE 63 S kicks off at $114,945, though as with all Mercedes offerings, it’s easy to go crazy with the options list. Our Brilliant Blue Metallic tester stickered at $133,075. But with its near-supercar levels of performance and handling, coupled with the five-seat versatility and load-carrying practicality of an SUV, this mighty Merc offers the best of all worlds. And much like the Daytona Slingshot, it’ll take driving thrills to new heights. «

Chris-Craft’s latest Launch 28 GT is a HIGH-LUXURY sports car for the seas By Howard Walker
T
he sheer splendor of every new Chris-Craft is encapsulated by its steering wheel. Just look at the thing. Better yet, touch it. The upper part is a rich, dark mahogany, varnished to perfection. The lower section is covered in a creamy, embossed leather with contrasting crisscross stitching. This isn’t just any steering wheel. It comes with a true surpriseand-delight feature: The mirror-polished central hub is weighted to keep the Chris-Craft logo level at all times, a parlor trick Rolls-Royce employs on the hubcaps of its $450,000 Phantom. Right now, that lovely wheel is being put to good use as we dodge crab traps—at 50 mph, blasting across Sarasota Bay—in Chris-Craft’s exquisite new Launch 28 GT, a top-seller in the 146-year-old boat-builder’s ever-expanding lineup. This one’s a little different though. After decades of making the 28 with honking V-8 inboards hooked up to stern drives, the version we’re piloting has the latest Yamaha 425 V-8 outboard hanging off the stern. Yes, that’s 425, as in a towering 425 horses. The advantage here is that outboard power typically means less maintenance, easier servicing, and better efficiency. Plus, there’s one humongous bonus: extra storage. With the Yamaha dangling off the back, the place where the inboard—either one or two—used to live is freed up. Now, at the press of a button, the rear hatch, which is typically topped with a comfy sunpad,

MIGHT BE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL Step aboard and you’re greeted CRUISER ON THE WATER. with an homage to old-school master craftsmanship. Everywhere you gaze, there’s a sea of quilted, leather-like vinyl—real leather just isn’t durable enough. The wood, however, is genuine, and it’s paired with so much polished stainless steel, you’ll swear you’re inside a Bentley convertible. The Launch 28 GT is also pretty practical. It’s the perfect family boat, with an open, bow-rider design that can accommodate at least 10. Hidden behind a swing-out door is a roomy toilet compartment with decent headroom, a wash basin, and a pump-out loo. Twist the key and the Yamaha fires straight up and idles with the hushed tick-tick-tick of a sewing machine. With the aid of the optional bow-thruster, we ease away from the Sarasota dock and head into the choppy open waters of the bay.
Hard down on the single-lever throttle, the engine roars like a V-8 big-block in a vintage muscle car, and the 28 GT leaps onto the plane in less than 5 seconds. We keep the lever hard forward and top out at an eye-watering 53 mph. As we pull back and spin that sexy wheel, the boat leans gracefully into the turn with real confidence and agility. When we hit our own wake, the smooth-riding hull slices through, splaying the water away, keeping the interior bone dry. Naturally, all this quality doesn’t come cheap. The base price of a 28 GT with a single 350-hp Mercury Verado is $200,470. Start adding the Heritage Edition trim with teak flooring ($22,100), the 425-hp Yamaha ($22,540), a painted GT hardtop ($29,950), and a bow-thruster ($9,800), and it’s easy to get to the $289,655 of our test boat. But the joy of knowing you’ll spin heads every time you pull up to that dockside eatery? Priceless.«

MEET OUR 5 UNDER 35 WHO ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE WITH HARD WORK AND NAPLES LOVE By Christina Cush | Photography by Michael Caronchi
Michael Walker
These young superstars were photographed on location at The Hotel Escalante in Naples. It’s a gorgeous old-world backdrop to highlight some fresh faces.
052_YOUNGFACES_0920.indd 53
At just 23 years old, Michael Walker already bears the hallmarks of a professional athlete: The second-year wide receiver and return specialist for the Jacksonville Jaguars always shows up early and ready for anything. With six older brothers and an older sister, Walker is the youngest of the brood and a lifelong Naples resident who graduated from Naples High as a celebrated football captain before going on to play at Boston College. “I was the only one of my siblings to go to college outside of Florida, and it was a huge step,” he says. “I learned a lot about myself and who I am.” Although he grew up in a bustling household— nicknamed Hotel Walker for the steady stream of kids pouring in and out—Walker admits that he was shy in middle school. As he came into his own and developed confidence through playing sports and being part of a team, this social anxiety gave way to a genuine ease and friendliness that is apparent to anyone who meets him. He attributes his most defining qualities and his generous heart to his close relationship with his ever-growing family, including parents Michael and Bonnie, who “should have the highest-level membership at Costco.” He jokes that his older brothers “roughed me up and picked on me,” but credits their tough love for helping him transition from playing high school football to Division 1 football, then to the pros. “I’m always working hard to prove myself to my siblings and earn their respect,” he says. This attitude has helped Walker navigate the NFL. “It’s more independent. You train on your own and hold yourself accountable for your team, so you can play for your brothers and prove each week that you are prepared for Sunday.” During COVID-19, Walker trained at Total Ath-
letic Performance and Coach Tumbarello Performance in Naples and kept his physique in check at PhysioRight. He left Naples in mid-July to report to Jags pre-season training and was looking forward to playing a pre-season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “It’s going to be surreal to be on the same field as Gronk and Tom Brady,” he says. To chill out while in Naples, he hangs with his best friends, plays the piano, or takes a fishing pole to his “top-secret spots in the backwaters, where the mangroves are.” Before leaving for Jacksonville, he hit up his favorite eateries. “Andre’s Steak House for steak, potatoes, and asparagus, and the bacon appetizer. For something quick with my friends, I’ll grab the Western barbecue burger at Jimmy P’s, and I’m obsessed with the Korean beef tacos at Lake Park Diner.” Even though he’s laser-focused on his football journey, Walker’s glad to have his bachelor’s in leadership management from Boston College. He’s considering earning a master’s degree so he can coach at the D1 level—or maybe joining all his brothers at Walker Contracting Group, his dad’s construction business. In the meantime, he’ll keep giving back to the community and working with individuals with special needs through Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine events and nonprofits such as STARability. “My parents raised us to serve others,” he says. “I carried this spirit with me to the Boston community, and now that I have this platform as an NFL player, I will build upon it.” No matter what, Walker plans on returning to the Paradise Coast when the time comes to have his own Hotel Walker. “I realized how lucky I was to live in Naples when I went to college. Now I love coming home and want to raise my kids here.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

Kassidy Owen Kassidy Owen, a 25-year-old Barre Fusion Pilates instructor, has the poised presence one might expect from someone in her line of work. In addition to her beautiful posture and healthy glow, the Las Vegas native has an endearing rasp in her voice as she says, “I fell in love with Naples as a college student. I used to come here during the summers to visit family friends.” Back then, Owen reveled in the area’s lush, tropical exteriors, which were so different from the Vegas desert. However, she didn’t just move here to live and work in paradise, but rather to seek solace after enduring back-to-back tragedies: the devastating loss of her younger brother to leukemia, and the trauma of being in the center of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting and literally running for her life. “I had friends who were shot,” she recalls. “It flipped my world upside down.” Fighting hard to persevere after such darkness, she sought the sunlight in Naples, the one place outside of Vegas where she felt as if she’d have a small support system. She found it hard to leave her parents and two sisters behind, but after she graduated from the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 2018, with a bachelor’s in kinesiology, she packed her bags and embraced change. Slowly but surely, with therapy and self-care, Owen has learned to process her heavy emotions. Exercise has helped her move forward, and she’ll sometimes bounce on a trampoline with music blasting when in need of a mood boost. Craving family connection, she’s created loving bonds with the two young girls she nannies part-time. “They had a lot to say about what I wore to 54
this photo shoot,” Owen says. Her biggest healing and sharing vehicle has been her blog, graciousand grateful.com. “I started it back in 2014, after I lost my brother. I needed to express what I was feeling and didn’t find a community that really understood. Not a lot of young people have lost someone very close to them. So, I released my blog on my personal social media platforms and started connecting with others who had lost special people when they were young. Now I write about grief and loss and how I get through it—and how practicing gratitude helps me not retreat but live my life to the fullest.” During COVID-19, Owen had some followers reach out to her with their own struggles. She says many had been distanced from their loved ones, who were hospitalized and on ventilators, and needed advice and hope. Owen could relate. “My brother was in isolation for six months before he died. When I visited him, I had to wear a mask, gloves, and a full-body protective suit because his immune system was so compromised.” Just being able to provide an understanding and safe place for her readers is meaningful to Owen, who is determined to give back as an expression of gratitude. When she lived in Las Vegas, she was very involved with the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which fights pediatric cancers, and is on track to host a spring fundraiser in Naples. She knows the local community will rally around this cause. “Naples is one of the biggest blessings in my life,” she says. “I see myself staying here for a long time.”

Maria Plata Chatty and curious, 27-year-old Maria Plata is planning a January 2021 wedding, and like most brides, she is doing a delicate dance with her mother. “My mom wants to incorporate as much of our Mexican heritage as possible and have as many family members there as possible,” Plata says. While she notes that her own taste is simpler and more intimate, her thirst for adventure and trying new things is vast. Plata, an avid reader who used to escape in Harry Potter books, grew up in Immokalee, where her parents were migrant farm workers. She traveled with them up the coast and back, following the seasonal crops, until ninth grade, when she stayed behind with her mom to focus on school. She scored Immokalee Foundation and Guadalupe Center scholarships to attend Florida Gulf Coast University and graduated in 2015 with a bachelor’s in communications and public relations. In college, she studied in the United Arab Emirates for six weeks, an experience that led her to embrace international travel and made her realize that she was capable of doing anything. She cut her next adventure, teaching in Thailand as a post-grad, a few months short so she could come home and help with family issues. Plata is the second oldest of six siblings, and her mother has taught her
052_YOUNGFACES_0920.indd 57
the value of “what hard work will do for you.” After serving as a community health educator in Immokalee through Doctors Without Borders, she accepted a similar position at a different health care organization and is now focused on COVID-19. A graduate of the Leadership Collier Foundation program, she cofounded Roots of Immokalee with two friends and has since distributed almost 1,500 bandanas to farm workers and fed 50 families through a community food drive. This heartfelt project has a unifying social media platform that highlights stories of people in the community, reminding us all of our common threads. “There are a lot of new young professionals here who want to make a change,” Plata says. “We may not have deep pockets like some of the older philanthropists do—and they do great things with their money—but we have new ideas and are very resourceful.” When she unwinds with her fiancé, Yeison Orozco, they go to the beach or stroll downtown. “I love the botanical garden,” she says. “We do outdoorsy stuff together and try new dishes from mom-and-pop restaurants. Currently, I am into Thai food and curry.” Though she may have to settle for a road-trip type of honeymoon in early 2021, she will never settle for a life without passion and purpose. Peter Jean-Marie If there’s a slick car parked close by and he’s wearing a cool outfit, 24-yearold fashion designer Peter Jean-Marie is quick to turn the opportunity into an impromptu photo shoot. Beyond his own Instagram, which is rapidly accumulating followers, the self-proclaimed “Millennial Mogul” is a staple across local print and television outlets. But beneath all the flash and his on-screen persona are realdeal traits such as grit and patience. Much like one of his business icons, Ralph Lauren, Jean-Marie launched his brand with neck ties. He is skilled at pattern making and sewing, but when he needs to, he outsources the construction to two people he has trained. Jean-Marie has spent the last 21 years in Naples, not including his time at Miami International University of Art & Design, where he earned an associate’s degree in fashion design. Jean-Marie keeps busy, which is a principle everyone in his immediate family adheres to. “My mom [Elide] and my brother [Johny] are very work-oriented,” he says. “At one point, my mom was raising three of us and working three jobs. My work routine is intense. I work overnight as a front desk agent at a hotel, I sleep a couple hours during the day, then I work on my brand. My night job taught me more discipline. It can be quiet, so I get to reflect more on my dreams and come up with ideas.” During the coronavirus shutdown, Jean-Marie was furloughed from his hotel job, so he sewed and distributed more than 1,000 masks. He also got a gig doing Instacart shopping and turned that into 58
a networking opportunity, sharing business cards and making tie sales during his deliveries. With a dad in the food industry and a mom in health care, just where did JeanMarie get his fashion sense? “Honestly, I had a good imagination when I was younger. I’d watch shows on Disney and Nickelodeon and think, ‘I want to live like that,’ which turned into a little bit of professional modeling.” Since then, his fashion taste has become more sophisticated. He cites style role models like Sean Combs—“he has an entrepreneurial mindset”—and athlete Russell Westbrook, “who throws on whatever and looks good.” Jean-Marie describes his own style as “not too dressy or casual. I’ll wear sneakers with nice slacks and a button-down and bow tie, that’s my everyday look.” Eventually, Jean-Marie hopes to open a storefront in Mercato. Until then, he’s busy expanding his menswear line, developing looks for women, talking to large department stores about partnerships, and working on a documentary about his upbringing. Other future goals include styling someone famous like LeBron James and attending The Met Gala. Many of his friends, he says, urged him to pursue his career in a bigger, more fashion-forward city like Miami or New York, but he listened to his mom instead and stayed local in order to grow his business at a sustainable pace. “What I love about Naples is the support,” he says. “I built myself up in a place where fashion isn’t the main thing. But sharing my dreams here has been great.”

Holly Strickland A couple mornings each week, 35-year-old Holly Strickland, a married working mom of an energetic 2-year-old boy, Maverick, pries herself out of bed at 3:45 a.m. After sipping her coffee, she throws on some workout clothes, laces up her sneakers, and heads over to Burn Boot Camp, the boutique fitness studio she teaches at and owns. While her intense schedule sometimes means she doesn’t return home until after 7:30 p.m., she finds time during the day to connect with her son and strike a healthy work-life balance. What’s more, she’s eyeing a second location in Naples where a lease will permit her to have men as clients, too. This buff boss lady couldn’t do it all without the help of her lieutenant firefighter husband, Justin Strickland, whom she dated briefly in middle school and then reconnected with in 2007. Also essential in caring for Maverick are her mother and mother-in-law, who take turns watching him. Strickland has lived in Naples since she was a baby, except for the four years she spent at the University of Central Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s in sports and fitness and was on a full-ride scholarship for women’s golf. “I still play golf for fun,” she says, noting that her favorite local rounds are at Great Oaks and Calusa Pines. “I was an assistant coach for the girls’ team at Gulf Coast High School last year. So many people gave to me in my golf career and I wanted to give back.” After college, she found that she was more interested in the physical side of training for golf than in participating in tournaments. Once she decided to stop
playing competitively, she devoted herself to becoming a top-notch fitness professional, motivating her clients with her megawatt smile and cheerful disposition. Outside of the studio, Strickland prefers to be on the boat with her husband, who is a charter captain on the side, and their son. “I’m really an outdoors girl,” she says. “For date nights, the boat is my thing. We will pick up a sub for dinner and go out on the Glades or the Marco River and tarpon fish. Sometimes, we will ride fourwheelers side by side.” When Maverick tags along, they ride a custom six-seater on the trails or put him on the boat—two activities he loves as much as they do. As of late, Strickland is busy transitioning Burn Boot Camp from virtual classes and offerings to an in-person model again, with strict cleaning and social distancing protocols in place. Yet, she wonders what adding another kid into the mix would do, especially if she moves forward with opening a second location. Those decisions can wait for now, as she revels in being a business owner and caring citizen within the Naples community. “There are so many cool things happening here,” she says. “We are involved with Hook a Hero, an organization that takes soldiers, vets, and first responders out fishing. I’ve had an event for Hook a Hero at my gym to raise money. They send people on trips to get a change of scenery and the help they need.” In addition to this involvement, the self-professed optimist says she has a personal mission to see the “the best in everybody” and help others shine a light on the wonderful qualities they possess. «

reg Wetzel was just 14 when he got his first job as a golf course attendant back in Montana. His professional connection to the sport lasted more than 35 years, turning into a career working with community developers to build and manage clubs. Then, at 50 years old, Wetzel decided to make a change. He earned a JD and now practices property law for a firm in Naples. But he couldn’t stay away from the links for long. While golf is no longer his job, he does engage in weekly games with a group of a dozen neighbors in Olde Cypress. These get-
togethers continued even earlier this year, during a time when it seemed every other social engagement had been canceled. Wetzel, like many other Neapolitans, realized that taking a whack at a small dimpled ball is compatible with socializing done six feet apart. He and his pals would each get their own cart and remain a good distance from one another for the round. Instead of heading to the clubhouse at the end for nineteenthhole pints, they’d gather by their carts for cooled cans they’d brought from home.

“
“They were all really embracing the chance to get outside and have any kind of recreation,” Wetzel says. “We don’t have the opportunity to meet socially in many other instances.” While many sports seem impossible in these days of limited contact, golf is seeing some of its best times in years, maybe in a generation. This seems true in Naples and on the national level. In May, 86 percent of golfers surveyed by the National Golf Foundation said they played at least once in the last two weeks and would again in the next two. Another positive indicator for Naples Golf from the NGF is that rounds in Orlando were up 39 percent this June verus June 2019. A few changes at courses meant a smooth transition to social distancing–approved play, and many local clubs say they’ve had big upticks this year as lapsed players return, new players sprout, and entire families show up together to play. With this city already known as the Golf Capital of the World, we have to wonder: Are we entering a new golden age of Naples golf? The New 18-Hole Normal Not too long ago, sports writers were crafting a different narrative around golf. They argued that the country had too many courses and younger people just weren’t playing like they used to. Other gripes were golf took too long or was too hard. Industry leaders offered solutions like shortening the game from 18 holes to 9, or even quadrupling the diameter of the cup to 15 inches. Before the pandemic, the inventory of available tee times had outpaced demand, says Doug Burnham, general manager of Quail Run Golf Club since 2015. Sure, winter months filled up, but in the summer, courses had far too many empty slots.

HOLE-Y MOLY!
That all changed dramatically in April. While the stay-at-home orders shuttered many outdoor activities, golf courses thrived. It was one of the only sports allowed under local quarantine rules and among the only activities friends could do together, albeit about two clubs’ lengths apart. Golf courses in Naples generally turned to the PGA for guidance, and many that stayed open through the outbreak incorporated minor changes to make the game pandemic-approved. Single players drove freshly disinfected golf carts, foam inserts in cups meant players no longer had to remove flags or reach into the hole to retrieve balls, and rakes were removed from bunkers. Players now mostly use apps to track strokes and putts rather than course-provided paper scorecards and pencils. Enthusiasts quickly adjusted to the commonsense protocols for the love of the game and showed up in droves, ready to play. Then it snowed in New England and the Midwest, bringing more golfers into town who would normally be gone in the warmer spring months. And some golfers on the east coast of Florida drove across the peninsula for reprieve from daunting COVID-19 numbers. It got so busy that Quail Run had to shut down for three days to regroup and re-evaluate procedures, explains Burnham. During the pandemic, local courses saw whole families playing together for maybe the first time, considering it was among the few outdoor activities everyone could do. That’s an upward trend Geoff Lofstead, executive director of the South Florida PGA Section, wants to see continue.
072_NAPLESGOLF_0920.indd 75
For the most part, it wasn’t hugely stressful for golf courses to adjust to the new ways we all live, says Kevin DeDonato, general manager of Tiburón Golf Club. “Golf is definitely matched for some of the changes that have occurred because of COVID-19, and the industry has done a good job of adjusting on the fly to make golf more accessible during these times,” he says. “It can be a touchless experience.” Given Tiburón’s relationship with a hotel, The Ritz-Carlton, Naples, one might have predicted a decrease in play. Instead, its members came out more frequently, even though hotel guests were noticeably absent. “People have been happy to just have a distraction during these challenging times,” DeDonato says. In late June, Tiburón was one of the few local courses that would allow nonmembers and non-guests to play. The way golfers think of their sport has changed, observes Lofstead. Players and hackers seem to be finding enjoyment in even the tougher parts of the game, he notes, such as chipping. “For those of us who play a lot, the normal frustrations you might have if you’re not playing the way you’d like to play sort of get forgotten by the pure joy of just getting outside.” But the question now for the golf courses is: Will it continue? The Winter Will Tell At the end of June, Bonita Bay Club held the region’s first major tournament since the pandemic began. In early August, the Florida Junior Tour hosted a tournament for players aged 16 to 18 at the Golf Club of

the Everglades. And aside from a few new logistics, tournament play has gotten a grip on setting up a competition that’s safe in the days of social distancing, says E.J. McDonnell, the PGA director of golf at Bonita Bay. The 76

course’s employees did need to rethink some basic things. There were no paper scorecards, and the players had set tee times, something previously abnormal for a tournament. At junior tournaments, youth players now bring their own snacks and drinks in their golf bags, rather than relying on provided provisions. But when the 150 or so pros showed up for the South Florida Open in June, McDonnell notes that the goal was to make it all feel a whole lot like it used to, albeit a bit safer. “It’s going to be our new regular, our new normal,” he says. “Everybody has their own sensitivity to it and what they feel like doing, and we want to make sure they all feel comfortable with it.” It’s also likely that all of these changes will remain, even after there’s a vaccination for the virus and life returns to pre-COVID normal. When that happens, McDonnell says many of the changes will seem like second nature. At driving ranges, for instance, buckets have been replaced with sterilized bags of balls,
something that’s just more sanitary. “We are not going to rush back to the old normal too fast,” McDonnell says. Whether all these changes will coincide with a long-term uptick for golf is still uncertain. Jeff Jackson, the head pro at Eagle Creek Golf and Country Club, says his course rode a roller coaster already this year. With “a wave of members returning North” in March, Eagle Creek initially saw a decrease in play. Then, in April, the club had a 15 percent increase in rounds, and an even bigger increase in May and June, when member play was up 1,800 rounds. Since clubs weren’t honoring reciprocal play benefits like they do most summers, when members of one club can play at several others, Eagle Creek saw the overall number of rounds for the summer stay about the same from previous years. “Our main concern heading into fall would be when and if our Canadian membership returns,” Jackson says. “With the insurance

This spring has been a mixed bag at Eagle Creek Golf & Country Club (pictured here). In March, member play decreased, with people returning home to northern parts of the U.S. and Canada. But in April, member play was up, and in May, June, and July it was way up.

concerns of contracting the virus in the United States, this could delay their return to the Sunshine State. That said, with the safety protocols that we have in place here at Eagle Creek we are confident that we can provide a safe golfing experience. At the end of the day, I feel one of the safest places is outside enjoying fresh air and our beautiful course.” It’s hard to determine what this fall and winter will look like, says Burnham, the GM at Quail Run. With the beach, restaurants, and other activities open and bustling in mid-July, Burnham believes the challenge for golf is to retain all those people who came out during the quarantine. The courses will also need to find a way to financially support the new rules. If they continue with the one-person-per-cart mandate, courses may have to buy more carts or figure out how to add dividers between the seats, before everyone shows up in the winter months. The staggered tee times many
072_NAPLESGOLF_0920.indd 77
courses used to spread people out during the pandemic may also not be tenable in the busiest part of the season, Burnham says. “Has it created an uptick? Maybe right now it has,” Burnham adds. In regards to golf course management, he notes that “unless you’ve geared yourself up for the winter months, you are not going to be prepared.” One thing likely to assist local courses is the way in which the quarantine affected how we think of daily life, says Wetzel. Like many people nowadays, some in his group of a dozen neighbors who play regularly have found themselves with more flexible work schedules and a new appreciation for the moments they can share together. “When they send out their group email, there’s usually a comment like, ‘thank goodness we can get out and do this,’” Wetzel says. “There’s more of a balance of recreation and work after COVID, and that’s going to help golf.” «

DANIEL C. TIGHE Following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma, nearly every homeowner, commercial property owner, and community association in Southwest Florida had questions. Fortunately for them, thousands found their way to attorney Daniel Tighe for answers. Tighe took on their cause as his own, working day and night to educate, empower, and when necessary, fight for them. His relentless service to the people of Naples, Bonita Springs, Estero, Marco Island, Fort Myers, and throughout Florida, further cemented his reputation as one of the most sought-after property damage advocates when disaster strikes. Successfully navigating insurance disputes requires the right combination of knowledge, skills, and experience. Add to that the complexity and resources required to handle claims for some of the most expensive homes in the country, massive condominium complexes, beachfront high-rises, and other large losses, and it’s easy to see why Tighe and his firm have been engaged to help clients obtain tens of millions of dollars for their property damage claims.
“No claim is too big for us to handle,” Tighe says. “We bring the right resources to bear no matter what the situation calls for. We do it right, every time.” Tighe is quick to point out that a great deal of his continued success is due to his hardworking team, their experience handling thousands of successful matters, and a commitment to a concierge level of service that goes beyond what many firms offer. For Tighe, it’s always been about helping people. While his dedication has seen him recognized by his peers in the legal community, what he finds most rewarding are the many thankyou notes and calls from clients who can now fix their home or reopen their business. Tighe reminds people in Southwest Florida that even if their Hurricane Irma claim has been underpaid or denied, they still have time to hire his firm to recover losses they suffered. “Although the deadline to submit an initial claim is just three years, once that claim is filed, policyowners have an additional two years to act if their claim was underpaid or denied.”

DINING
MASTERPIECE Pasta Linguine alle vongole is one of the most recognizable and classic Italian pasta dishes that can be found in regions throughout the country. “I’ve been eating this dish for as long as I can remember,” says Vincenzo Betulia, chef and partner at Osteria Tulia. “It’s one of the most popular items at the restaurant, so we rotate it in and out of the menu with different variations, sometimes changing the pasta or adding
101_TASTEOPEN_0920.indd 101
pancetta, chorizo, breadcrumbs, or pecorino cheese.” The preparation starts with olive oil, garlic, white wine, and a pinch of pepperoncini, along with the juices from the clams as they cook and open. “I use Manila clams because they’re the perfect size and open quickly,” Betulia explains. “At the end, we add some house-made clam broth to intensify the flavor.” (osteriatulia.com)

SHANGRI-LA SPRINGS
SHANGRI-LA SPRINGS
PLANT-POWERED MENU When Ross and Noreen Edlund opened their first Skillets location in 1995, they had a simple goal: to serve the best breakfast and lunch in Southwest Florida. Twenty-five years later, they’ve become proponents of the Blue Zones diet and offer nearly a dozen approved dishes at all nine of their current locations. “The diet is a good fit with our format,” says Ross. “We don’t have a deep fryer and don’t serve hamburgers. Quality, freshness, and flavor are what matter for us.”
CLEAN-LIVING Compound
SHANGRI-LA SPRINGS
Many restaurants advertise a farm-to-table philosophy, but few have a farm on the premises. At Shangri-La Springs in downtown Bonita, the five-acre garden is certified organic by the USDA. It has evolved over the past three or four decades and now contains perennial greens, vegetables, citrus, legumes, three beehives, and mango trees planted in the 1970s. The garden was one of the main reasons David Robbins signed on as chef de cuisine last year. “I grew up on a small organic family farm in Hawaii, long before it became a hot trend,” he says. “When I looked at Shangri-La Springs, it reminded me of my childhood.” The homegrown produce finds its way directly onto the menus of Harvest & Wisdom, the property’s on-site restaurant. Members of the culinary team are encouraged to join Cecelia Morales, The on-site garden at ShangriLa Springs yields an array of produce that chef David Robbins (pictured above) turns into healthy, flavorful dishes at Harvest & Wisdom restaurant.
the garden manager, and get their hands dirty. Having the plot available encourages the kitchen to experiment and plan ahead: They can work six to nine months in advance and plant what they think they’ll need for the coming seasons. Originally built as a hotel in 1921, Shangri-La Springs is now a wellness complex encompassing a fitness studio, an organic spa with six treatment rooms, and event and wedding venues. Last October, the facility was officially designated as a Blue Zones Project–recognized organization. The boutique hotel rooms are currently being renovated with an eye toward making the property a self-contained destination. On the restaurant side, Robbins’ ultimate goal is to transform Shangri-La Springs into a Southwest Florida version of New York’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a lauded restaurant that culls ingredients from its own farm and other area purveyors. Toward that end, Harvest & Wisdom has begun to assemble a list of organic, biodynamic and/or sustainable wines from some of the world’s top boutique producers. While Robbins is aware that it took chef Dan Barber 10 years to achieve his dream at Blue Hill, the process doesn’t discourage him. “Our ethos with food is simple,” says Robbins. “It’s not about labels, but about doing the right thing—using the ingredients at hand to produce food that is clean, fresh, healthy, and delicious.” (shangrilasprings.com)
Plant-based creations like the Power Salad (pictured) coexist alongside traditional favorites such as eggs benedict, biscuits with sausage gravy, and corned beef hash. In addition, Skillets boasts homemade bread—a point of pride for Ross, who operated a bakery in Chicago for two decades. As Southwest Florida gets closer to becoming a Blue Zones Community, the diet will play a more significant role in the Skillets menu. Beyond their commitment to healthy eating, the Edlunds are also deeply involved in community charities. They have a direct affiliation with Change for Children, an organization that provides resources for neglected and fostered children in Collier County. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas, they collect donations at all their locations and match every dollar. (skilletsrestaurants.com)

Near and JAR Pickling, canning, and preserving food were important survival skills on the American frontier. David McCone of the Naples Canning Company is committed to bringing them back into our daily life. “I became fascinated with pickling because of the unlimited ways you can change a product,” says McCone, who grew up in a rural part of Northern Michigan. “A white wine vinegar will give you a different taste than a Champagne vinegar, and tweaking the spices in a recipe can yield a completely different result.” McCone worked in restaurants before opening his business last October. When the pandemic closed the Third Street Farmers Market, he shifted his focus to e-commerce and now offers free local delivery. Bread and butter pickles are his most popular item, followed by garlic dills and wildflower honey mustard. He also makes a range of low-sodium and low-sugar jams.
David McCone offers spreads such as Bourbon Peach Smash Jam and Sweet Eggplant Caponata (right).
All of his produce comes from Inyoni Organic Farm in Naples and 12 Seasons Farm in Fort Myers, both of which are certified organic and non-GMO. He’s a firm believer in the dietary importance of fermented foods and their ability to create prebiotics essential for digestive health. Above all, he’s an ambassador for “farm-to-jar” canning and the role of nonindustrial farming. “It’s so important that we understand where our food comes from, how it’s grown, and how it’s treated after harvest.” (naplescanningco.com)

Lasting LOVE Few Florida restaurants survive more than a decade, and many close long before that. Kelly’s Fish House, founded in 1953, is the oldest restaurant in Naples and a genuine slice of Old Florida. “My stepfather was a commercial fisherman,” says Kelly Ellis, the current owner. “He bought the seafood business from Bob and Pat Combs in 1957 and acquired the restaurant in 1971.” It has remained basically unchanged ever since, relying on an unbeatable formula: fresh, highquality ingredients and warm service, combined with a view of the Gordon River. Netting drapes the walls, and the glass-topped tables are filled with sand and shells. Menu highlights include pristine Gulf shrimp and snapper, Apalachicola oysters, and an assortment of the best catch. “We buy from independent fishermen who work for us on consignment and bring in local fish such as Florida red grouper and kingfish,” Ellis explains. A recent visit featured fluffy pompano amandine, lightly fried jumbo sea scallops, and grilled mahi. Guests who want to take away a souvenir can visit the Shell Shack next door, which Ellis opened 25 years ago. It combines a huge selection of local and imported shells with natural sea sponges, sand dollars, starfish, nautical gifts, and jewelry. Those who don’t want to buy in bulk can select a free shell from the assortment at the entrance. Ellis is straightforward about his recipe for success. “I have good people,” he says. “Several employees have been here more than 40 years. Good ingredients are important, but the people make it work.” (kellysfishhousediningroom.com)

EAT + DRINK OFF THE VINE
WOMEN in Wine
Get to know the new generation of FEMALE winemakers leading vineyards to success By Mark Spivak
Nearly 40 years ago, professor Linda Bartoshuk’s research into the physiology of taste electrified the wine world. She determined that certain people have a higher concentration of taste receptors on their tongues, and she designated those individuals as “supertasters.” She also found that supertasters are more likely to be women. If you accept the theory that women are better tasters than men, why aren’t there more female winemakers? The simple answer is that the wine business has historically been a boys’ club. This tends to be true in Europe even today, where many female winemakers owe their position to family ownership and a lack of male siblings. Starting in the 1980s in California, however, some women began
Theresa Heredia of Gary Farrell
to rise to superstar status: Helen Turley (Marcassin), Eileen Crane (Domaine Carneros), Heidi Barrett (consultant for Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle), Merry Edwards, Zelma Long (Simi), and Sally Johnson (Pride Mountain Vineyards). These trailblazers led the way for a new generation of artisans in California and elsewhere, including the newest names to watch, listed below. Theresa Heredia, Gary Farrell, Sonoma, California: Heredia was a PhD candidate in chemistry with an emphasis on enology at U.C. Davis before she left the program to follow her passion for winemaking. After working at Domaine de Montille in Burgundy as well as California’s Saintsbury and Joseph Phelps, she joined Gary Farrell in 2012. She focuses on allowing the character of each of the winery’s Russian River vineyard sites to express itself. (garyfarrellwinery.com) Maggie Kruse, Jordan, Sonoma, California: Kruse started at Jordan in 2006 and replaced retiring winemaker Rob Davis last year; both were heavily influenced by André Tchelistcheff, the legendary California winemaker who consulted at Jordan from the beginning. “André always said that balanced, low-alcohol wines age better,” Kruse says, and finding that balance is her main objective. (jordanwinery.com)
INMAN FAMILY WINES
Clockwise from above: The Jordan winery in Sonoma, California; Maggie Kruse; Kathleen Inman; Remy Drabkin.
Remy Drabkin, Remy Wines, Willamette Valley, Oregon: Drabkin was a bit of a winemaking wunderkind. She decided to become a vintner at the age of 8, worked her first harvest at 14, and founded her namesake winery at 25. She specializes in single-vineyard wines made from Italian grape varieties seldom seen in Oregon such as Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese, and Lagrein. (remywines.com)

She journeyed to Long Island in 2006 and helped build Macari into an internationally recognized estate specializing in Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc. (macariwines.com) Ashley Heisey, Long Meadow Ranch, Napa, California: Lovingly restored by the Hall family, Long Meadow Ranch is committed to sustainability and famous for its Farmstead Restaurant, which uses ingredients cul-
tivated on the property. Heisey has worked in vineyards around the world as well as California (notably Far Niente and Opus One). As vice president of winemaking at Long Meadow, she leads a team of artisans making wines that reflect the ranch’s diverse vineyard sites. (longmeadowranch.com)

Kathleen Inman, Inman Family Wines, Sonoma, California: Inman founded her eponymous winery in 2000. Her style ranges from playful (Endless Crush rosé) to serious (a bevy of single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from select sites). She concentrates on what she terms “sensitive farming,” which encompasses sustainability and environmental responsibility. (inmanfamilywines.com)
Alexandra Boudrot, Pierre Sparr, Alsace, France: Born in Burgundy to a winemaking family, Boudrot studied viticulture and winemaking at the University of Dijon before moving to Alsace. She started at Pierre Sparr in 2015 and is now responsible for overseeing both vineyard selection and cellar work at this historic estate dating to 1680. She also produces a range of wines including Riesling from Grand Cru Schoenenbourg and both Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer from Grand Cru Mambourg. (vins-sparr.com) «

WARM-UP
Paddle for PEACE
Although it may be intimidating at first, paddleboarding is a great sport for athletes of all levels. Jennifer Khosla, a certified stand-up paddleboard yoga teacher based out of Lean and Green Body in Naples, recommends beginning with a lesson to go over proper form, foot placement, and balance tips. “The awesome thing about paddleboarding is that you can always sit down, with your legs crossed, or go onto your knees, especially when starting,” says Khosla. This paddleboarding pro teaches clients from 8 to 80-plus years old, with customized experiences available for individuals

and groups. She says knowing how to swim is essential and advises anyone with a bad back or other injuries to get cleared by a doctor before participating. Paddleboarding is a great workout for the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, lower back, core, and shoulders, as you must continually stabilize yourself by engaging those muscles. Even though you are on the water, you can work up a good sweat, so be sure to hydrate before and after. It’s also importat to wear waterproof sunscreen. Khosla adds that while the physical benefits are obvious, paddleboarding is good for the mind, too. “It’s like a moving meditation,” she says. “You can appreciate nature from a new perspective. We have such lush, beautiful landscapes here in Southwest Florida. It’s incredible exploring them from the paddleboard.” (leanandgreenbody.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020 109

BERRY Good Hungry for something refreshing? Try making this simple mixed-berry protein smoothie by personal trainer Jen Cleaves of Naples-based Healthy Living with Jen. She raves that it’s packed with flavor and goodness (antioxidants, vitamin C, flavonoids), making it a great afternoon snack or pre- or post-workout treat. (healthylivingwithjen.com) INGREDIENTS 1/2 cup frozen blueberries 1/2 cup frozen strawberries 1/2 banana 3/4 cup milk 1 tbsp. almond butter Sprinkle of chia seeds
Place berries, banana, milk, and almond butter in a blender. Blend until smooth and top with chia seeds. If you don’t drink dairy, swap out the cow’s milk for your favorite non-dairy option, such as unsweetened vanilla almond milk.
KIDS FIRST
COURTSIDE STRETCHING Practicing your serve, ground strokes, volleys, and overheads regularly will make you a better, more consistent tennis player. And so will stretching. When you incorporate a stretching routine into your pre- and post-play rituals, you will decrease your chances of getting injured and improve your ability to reach and lunge for difficult shots. To limber up, start from the top of your body with your head and neck, and then work your way down to your ankles. Stephanie Hrunka from Naples’ StretchLab says, “Start with static stretching and hold a stretch for 20 to 30 seconds, making sure to get both sides of the body. Finish up with some dynamic stretching, adding a gentle movement into the stretch.” Key moves for racquet sports, according to Hrunka, are: wrist flexion to decrease tension of the hands, wrist, and elbow; the pectoralis major stretch to decrease imbalances in the shoulder area; and thoracic rotation of the abdominals. Spend the most time working on your calf muscles, groin, hamstrings, quadriceps, and hips and you’ll feel like a winner, no matter the score. (stretchlab.com)
Kadin Williams (center, blue glasses), a cancer survivor, shaves the head of Ben Abes during Clips for Cancer in 2019 to raise money for Barbara’s Friends. Kadin was diagnosed with kidney cancer and, after having a 2-pound tumor and his kidney removed, went through six months of intensive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Kadin is finished with treatment and is cancer free.
MICHAEL CARONCHI
Movements such as pectoral stretches and standing toe touches help to limber your body and prepare you for the physical demands of tennis.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time when Barbara’s Friends celebrates its supporters and accomplishments. This year marks 25 years of helping children with cancer at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, the region’s only children’s hospital. Like many nonprofits, Barbara’s Friends has seen a significant drop in donations due to the pandemic, but the need is very much still present. “We’ve had 23 children diagnosed with cancer since March 1, more than expected,” says Emad Salman, MD, regional medical director for Golisano Children’s Hospital and a pediatric oncologist. “The families’ needs are greater with the pandemic and loss of jobs, yet we’ve lost about half our philanthropic funding due to canceled events. The need is there; cancer didn’t go away because events stopped.” More than half of the children treated for cancer at Golisano Children’s Hospital are uninsured, on Medicaid, or have no form of payment. Since its founding, Barbara’s Friends has raised more than $20 million and has treated more than 8,000 children with cancer and blood disorders. (leehealthfoundation.org)

FITNESS DATES We’ve all adjusted our fitness routines as a result of the coronavirus. Not everyone is ready to return to their favorite gym or studio, but would you feel differently if you could go back by appointment and work out with fewer people? Better yet, what if you can do it all in under 20 minutes? This is a concept that Tom Wooden, owner of The Exercise Coach, a personal training studio in Naples, has been utilizing, much to the happiness and health of his clients. “Because we do everything by appointment, we essentially control our environment,” Wooden says. “We can schedule one, two, three people at a time, depending on what the sensitivities are of our clientele and the availability of our coaches.” Typically, Wooden says, there are no more than five people in the studio at once. Those who are most concerned can schedule appointments during the studio’s slowest times: early morning, midday, or late evening. He’s seen two predominate factors at play in his initial consultations with clients: the “I need to get out of my house” element, and, more importantly, those worried about their underlying health risks, such as obesity, heart issues, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). He explains that those with pre-existing vulnerabilities are prioritizing their health and looking for ways to stay fit and safe at the same time. Like many businesses, The Exercise Coach has adopted new procedures: Coaches wear masks at all times, and everyone is required to use hand sanitizer or wash their hands upon entering and exiting the facility. Equipment is sanitized between each use, and masks and gloves are also made available. (exercisecoach.com)
110_BALANCE_0920.indd 111
This year has presented many obstacles, and the associated stress may be affecting your quality of sleep. According to Christopher Mendello, MD, a Naples-based sleep specialist at Premiere Pulmonary and Sleep, increased stress interrupts our much-needed REM sleep and can cause us to wake up multiple times during the night. “This decreases immune system resilience, causes hormone imbalance, and has a significant negative impact on cerebral function,” says Mendello. To improve the quality of your pajama time, he recommends avoiding stimulants a few hours before hitting the sheets and trying one or more of the following sleep savers: MEDITATION, DEEP BREATHING, AND PROGRESSIVE MUSCLE RELAXATION MODERATE DAILY EXERCISE FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES A CONSISTENT NIGHTLY ROUTINE AND BEDTIME
Lastly, talk to your doctor about supplements like melatonin or over-the-counter and prescription sleep aids, which Mendello says, “have much less addictive potential and risk to overall health compared to medications used in the past.” (nppms.com) NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

Continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 has prevented most local arts organizations and venues from confirming the public events that we traditionally feature in this section. We will return to covering the arts scene when it blooms anew. Until then, grab your readers and set out for new perspectives delivered through the eyes—and pens— of Neapolitans. Populate your reading list with these titles by LOCAL authors StepParenting Essentials: A Guide to Love, Blend, and Survive By Molly Barrow, PhD StepParenting Essentials (Barringer Publishing, 2019) presents 25 rules and tons of advice for avoiding pitfalls when creating a new family. Long-time Naples resident Molly Barrow, who holds a PhD in clinical psychology, has worked as a mental health counselor for 20 years and is the executive director of the nonprofit IMAGINE Children’s Health Center in Naples, which works to diagnose and provide psychological treatment for emotional trauma and mental illness. In addition to this book, Barrow is the author of Matchlines for Singles: How to Find Your Perfect Match and the self-esteem-building children’s adventure series Malia & Teacup.
Untamed By Glennon Doyle Although COVID-19 sidelined the tour for her third memoir, Untamed (The Dial Press, 2020), Glennon Doyle promoted the title while in quarantine in Naples with her three children and wife, World Cup soccer champion Abby Wambach. In this instant No. 1 New York Times best seller, Doyle recounts falling in love with Wambach, ending her marriage to former model and semi-pro soccer player Craig Melton, and forming a new blended family with a solid co-parenting framework. While she first garnered national attention for her Momastery blog, Doyle gained a much wider audience with her first two, best-selling memoirs, Carry On, Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life, and Love Warrior. In the description for Untamed, Doyle writes: “Here is what I’ve learned: The braver we are, the luckier we get.” Florida Man By J.C. Bruce This mystery novel is the fourth in Naples writer Jeff Bruce’s Strange Files series, which follows protagonist Alexander Strange’s quest to document weird news. In Florida Man (Tropic Press, 2020), Bruce, who goes by the nom de plume J.C. Bruce, tells the tale of how Strange got to Florida and the oddities he encountered. Locals are sure to recognize some of those colorful characters and places, including Goodland, Ochopee, the Florida Keys, and Pelican Bay.
The Snitch: An Agent Without a Badge By Lacey King and Laurence E. Sturtz Long-time Naples fixture Lacey King is no stranger to writing. Following a career in the Diplomatic Corps of the United States Department of State, King retired to Naples in 1995 and began ghostwriting memoirs. While The Snitch: An Agent Without a Badge (Outskirts Press, 2018) is fiction, it is based on the true story of a kidnap-murder by a career criminal working undercover as a snitch for the FBI—and the conspiracy and 1976 trial that ensued. Co-author Laurence E. Sturtz, an Ohio defense attorney who went up against the FBI in this case, partnered with King to bring this exciting narrative to life.

The Ghost of Bowdoin College: Money, Murder, and the Mob By Giuseppe Vincenzo Vumbacco His seasonal neighbors in Park Shore know the author as Joe Vumbacco, a corporate lawyer and the former CEO/president of Health Management Associates. Vumbacco earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Bowdoin College in 1967 and returned to his alma mater as the setting for this self-published ghost story (2018) that begins with two tragic events in 1805. During a modern-day hostile takeover of a New York City company, the apparition intercedes to help a Bowdoin alumnus and his mafia friends caught in the middle of it all.
A Toxic Inconvenience: Red Tide and Blue-Green Algae on Florida’s Coast By Nicholas G. Penniman IV Nicholas G. Penniman IV has been deeply involved with environmental advocacy through the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, the Everglades Foundation, Collier County Environmental Advisory Council, and Collier County Growth Management Oversight Committee. He reviewed hundreds of research papers and conducted dozens of interviews to write A Toxic Inconvenience (Barringer Publishing, 2019). After describing how red tide and blue-green algae appeared along Southwest Florida’s coast, he discusses their effects on human health and what state and federal entities are doing to address the issues. A registered Florida Master Naturalist, Penniman is also the author of Nature’s Steward: A History of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Trust but Verify By Karna Small Bodman Karna Small Bodman served six years in the Reagan White House—starting out as deputy press secretary before ascending to the role of senior director of the National Security Council, becoming the highest-ranking woman on the White House staff. She is the author of six international thrillers, including her latest, Trust but Verify (Regnery Fiction, 2018), which centers around the government’s race to thwart a plot to tank global stock markets.

Jackie’s Girl: My Life with the Kennedy Family By Kathy McKeon In 1964, 19-year-old Kathy McKeon had just relocated to the U.S. from Ireland when she became the personal assistant to former First Lady Jackie Kennedy. In her New York Times best seller, Jackie’s Girl (Gallery Books, 2018), McKeon recounts the 13 years she worked for Mrs. Kennedy, which began just 10 months after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Now a grandmother living part-time on Marco Island, McKeon goes beyond chronicling her personal relationship with Mrs. Kennedy and her children by offering an insider’s account of major events, such as the assassination of Robert Kennedy. She balances these narratives with her own coming-of-age journey while finding her way in a new country, an experience she shared with some of the most enigmatic figures in American history.
Oh, For the Love of Haiti! By JoAnne M. Kuehner In Oh, For the Love of Haiti! (Outskirts Press, 2018), JoAnne M. Kuehner, who founded the Naples-based Hope for Haiti charitable organization 30 years ago, showcases the people and communities she’s met during her journeys to the struggling island nation. Instead of focusing on the history or evolution of the nonprofit, Kuehner shares the inspiring stories of those she feels called to help. In the book description, she writes: “Some of my stories are humorous; many are sad. However, all are true.” NAPLESILLUSTRATED.COM | SEPTEMBER 2020

Together APART THE NAPLES YACHT CLUB PRESENTS A VIRTUAL BOOK CLUB EXPERIENCE Did your book club go on hiatus? The pandemic lockdown didn’t put the Ladies’ Book Club at Naples Yacht Club on the shelf. Carol Girardin, the hostess for the April discussion of Next Year in Havana (Berkley, 2018) by Chanel Cleeton, visited the club and videotaped her presentation for a virtual meeting. In it, she provides a lively introduction, vibrant modern and historic photos, and mood-setting Cuban music. She also draws a connection between the book’s events during the Cuban Revolution and yacht club member Nydia Tranter, who was attending a 1958 New Year’s Eve party for diplomats in Cuba the night Fulgencio Batista was ousted from the island in a coup led by Fidel Castro. Along with 80 others, Tranter took refuge in the Chilean embassy alongside her 3-month-old daughter and husband for three months until they could make passage to the United States. In addition to this anecdote and Girardin’s list of questions to prod fellow readers, the recorded event features themed cuisine. The club’s new executive chef, Michael Katz, videotaped his preparation of three Cuban dishes—Spanish bean and chorizo soup, the signature 1905 Salad, and twice-fried plantains—from the famed Columbia Restaurant. It was his first task within two days of donning his toque blanche at Naples Yacht Club. Both the virtual book club presentation and food demonstrations are available to view on YouTube. Visit youtube.com, search for “Naples Yacht Club Channel,” and click the link to access the three-part series.

FAVORITE THINGS Ashley Dewji has been living in Naples for more than three years, after resid-

ing in Boston, Los Angeles, and Dallas. The bubbly private banker and financial advisor at JP Morgan has spent her entire career in different roles at the company, since graduating from York University with a bachelor’s in accounting in 2012. The draw to Naples was strong, primarily motivated by a yearning to be closer to her parents, both of whom live in South Florida. She’s never looked back since making the move. “So many people say they love the beaches in Naples,” she says. “But I hardly get there as much as I would like to. Mostly, I love how philanthropic our community is. There are few communities across the U.S. that are as charitably inclined as Naples.” Dewji jumped right in to the nonprofit support scene, starting with the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. “I started their NextGen Philanthropy group with a close friend of mine, Emma Christman Osborne, when I first came to Naples,” says Dewji. “My heart continues to be and always will be with educating and empowering our youth.” She is a new board member for the Gulfshore Playhouse and will chair their Planned Giving Council and continue to serve on their finance committee. 1. Bring the parents: Ocean Prime. The restaurant makes me feel like I am back in Beverly Hills. I love the Black Orchid cocktail and sushi. I know it’s a steak restaurant, but I do not eat meat. 2. Connect with nature: Clam Pass Beach is the first beach I went to when I came to Naples, and it is still my favorite. 3. Splurge: The YSL makeup counter at Saks. I am obsessed with quality makeup and skin care. 4. Grab coffee: Angelic Desserts has the best coffee and their pastry chef is wonderful. I got my gluten-free and vegan birthday cake from there this year. 5. Get a culture boost: Gulfshore Playhouse. I grew up enjoying theater as a child. My parents took me and my brother to New York City almost every Labor Day to see a show. I’m so excited about the build of our new Gulfshore Playhouse campus. 6. Work out: That’s a toss-up between Practice Yoga, my daily 5:30 a.m. class, and Barre Fusion, my 4 favorite Pilates studio where I have made so many of my girlfriends. 7. Take someone who is new to Naples: Dilly’s Seafood Shack at Three60 Market. They have the best calamari. After that we usually go for a walk to the food truck park, which is unique for Naples. 8. Go on a date: I love a good bike ride on Sanibel, stopping for lunch along the way at Gramma Dot’s and ending at the beach to watch the sunset. —Christina Cush
