Family fortunes: Keeping the family together through generational transitions
Generations of families have wrestled with the same issue–how to keep the family together through generational transitions and transfer of significant wealth while respecting the needs and opinions of all generations. Families are concerned about more than being able to manage, grow and sustain financial assets, or the challenges of operating a family business or enterprise. They want to nurture and maintain family ties from generation to generation as the family grows and changes. Talking about wealth and developing a shared vision and purpose for the future can be challenges, but they are not insurmountable. Common themes are often raised, including: • Maintaining family harmony and making decisions together about shared assets while respecting differences of opinion. • Supporting younger generations so they can follow their passions and maintain a sense of purpose in the presence of family success. • Preparing younger generations to be engaged stewards of family wealth or creators of new opportunities for the family enterprise. Each generation may have its own set of concerns. Some family members may feel that too much focus on family wealth may create a sense of entitlement or lead to a lack of ambition among younger generations. Parents may have concerns about selecting one of their children to lead the family business when they love all their family equally. There may be concerns about the financial impact if children get divorced, or what 1 2
might happen if the family business is taken in new and different directions. Younger generations may have their own questions and concerns. Will they be able to live up to family expectations? Can they tell their parents they want to pursue a different career and not join the family business or family office? How will they work with other family members? Will senior executives in the business or family office respect them? Take steps to ensure a successful transition. Studies exploring 100-year-old family businesses1 reveal common themes for successful transitions.2 Primarily they require intent, communication and preparation. “The glue that keeps a family together is a mix of shared values and shared commitment to success,” says John Smyth. The results demonstrate that focusing on relationships within the family is as important as business resilience and success. Open the lines of communication. Finding a solution requires input from all generations. Louise Armour advises families to “...focus on strengthening and preserving family connections. They are the key to long-term success over generations.” Establish a set of principles that resonate with the entire family. Start by defining the meaning of “wealth.” Most people define wealth as more than their net worth. Happiness, satisfaction, good health and helping others who are less fortunate are some of the terms people use to define wealth. Define who is “family.” Are spouses included? What happens when there’s
Promotion
a divorce? Are partners or significant others included in the definition? It’s a continuous and evolving journey. Some families choose to create a family constitution, which is not a legally enforceable agreement, but more of a “family pact” that brings clarity and offers a guide for working together. Create a sense of responsibility through shared decision-making. “Success revolves around developing a family mission statement and a set of guidelines that will help when conflicts occur,” advises Sal Tiano. Having a plan in place enables families to build confidence and help individual members become stewards for future generations. This process begins with communication and discussion, as well as formulating a way to make decisions together. Rely on a strong and experienced advisor. Working with an experienced advisor who is knowledgeable about the needs of families when it comes to generational transitions is essential to achieving a successful outcome for the entire family. AVIATION REPORT OF A DISASTER BERNARD McCORMICK
T
he relief effort for the massive Hurricane Dorian damage in the Bahamas involves every mode of transportation available. It takes one back in history to June of 1940, and a place called Dunkirk in France. There the remnants of a French army and most of the British Expeditionary Force were surrounded by German forces. The only way out was by sea from a place that had no natural port. The call for help was heeded by hundreds of British boat owners, non-military people who voluntarily crossed the rough English Channel in craft small enough to enter shallow waters. There, soldiers waded out to meet them, often protecting their rifles by raising them above their heads, and were escorted to larger ships. In a week’s time, more than 300,000 British and French soldiers were evacuated, saving a force of trained men that eventually was part of a winning coalition. Those citizen saviors did not ask for permission or need visas, or any other authority. They just got in their boats and did it. Today, under vastly different circumstances, hundreds of small civilian boats and private aircraft have been crisscrossing the 100 miles of water delivering supplies and bringing back refugees who have lost everything but their lives. There are so many vehicles involved that they are literally getting in each other’s way, creating confusion and even shutting down some small airports as organizations that run them are overwhelmed by the traffic. Add to that red tape and delays on both the islands and U.S. airports by officials who have never seen such challenges and insist on playing by the book when Dunkirk speed is needed. A vivid description of the situation comes to us indirectly by way of our friend and local investment manager Nik Bjelajac. He in turn is forwarding reports sent to him by David Ehlers, an investment advisor (we wrote about him in the 1970s) who made his fortune in South Florida and

now lives in Las Vegas. He has been receiving messages from his friend, a pilot named Peter Vasquez. Vasquez is a natural writer with much to say about his and many others trying to help in an unprecedented emergency. Among his stories is that of a man identified only as WARLOCK, apparently a retired air controller, who seeing the chaos in air space at a Bahamian airport, improvised an air control system to help relieve congestion and provide safety for the many planes trying to take off and land. t is a coincidence that Eric Barton’s piece (page 30) on a novel seaplane company based in South Florida was scheduled for this issue. The company, founded by a former U.S. Navy fighter pilot, already had routes established to the Bahamas, and seaplanes have more flexibility in finding emergency landing spots, especially in an area surrounded by water. This company was launched a few years after another company in the seaplane business, Chalk’s International Airlines, shut down. That company was also started by a former military aviator. He flew in World War I and started his service in South Florida in 1919. Our only flight on a seaplane was on that airline—to the Bahamas, of course. The combination of seaplanes and the U.S. Navy strikes a nostalgic chord, at least with those few of us who remember Lt. j.g. Tommy McCormick. Our cousin flew a Kingfisher observation floatplane off the Battleship Tennessee. He was killed over Iwo Jima in February 1945. A confidential after battle report discovered 60 years later suggested that he was likely hit by friendly fire from the big guns arcing their shells over his low flying plane. So as you think about and pray for the poor souls in the Bahamas, you might remember cousin Tommy as well.

Warby Parker Las Olas Boulevard marks the chic eyewear brand’s first Broward location By Melissa Puppo
I
f you frequent east Las Olas, chances are you’ve noticed a new pop of color crop up among the endless line of restaurants and storefronts. It’s most noticeable when sipping a thirstquenching cocktail on Louie Bossi’s front patio. The Warby- blue stucco façade accented with an illustration of spectacles above the main doorframe hints at what’s inside: trendy eyewear brand Warby Parker. It was founded by a group of then-rebellious grad students who fought to change the norm in the eyewear industry, delivering chic, designer looks at a revolutionary price. The Las Olas Boulevard storefront marks the brand’s fifth location in South Florida with countless stores additionally dotting the country. Sophisticated Approach A look inside the shop leads the eyes to a bustling beachscape by Barcelona-based illustrator Sandra Navarro, also known as “Lalalimola.” Her work features palm trees and beachgoers mixed in with bright pops of orange, yellow and blue. The mural sits behind the marble “Reference Desk” where customers can go to pick up orders, get frame adjustments and consult with opticians. The remainder of the store mimics the look of a library with
colorful displays of books, brass accents, neatly arranged glasses on oak shelving surrounded by globe lighting tables, and, of course, ample full-length mirrors. Pick Your Pair If the thought of trying on a new pair of frames seems a little overwhelming, let the Warby Parker advisors dressed in “bleu de travail,” French for worker jackets, offer style advice. They’ll walk you through each selection of prescription glasses and sunglasses. You can even get lenses that help prevent strain from blue light. Las Olas’ location also offers eye exams and contact fittings. Warby Parker’s ever-changing collections feature frames designed in-house with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coatings, plus impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses that block UVA and UVB rays. In late August, the team launched its latest Italian-made collection, Sesia, mixing two layers of contrasting acetate “for a Riviera-ready finish.” As an effort to give back, the brand donates one pair of glasses to someone in need for every pair purchased. To date, Warby Parker has distributed more than five million pairs across the world.

South Broward Star Helps Build La Salle Water Polo Program
W
hen La Salle University launched a women’s water polo team in 2017, it searched the country for players. One who the Philadelphia school found is Madison Martinez, who starred at South Broward High School. She has helped La Salle build its program rapidly and attract the interest of other players from South Florida. After the expected struggle its first year, the new team won 10 games last season, improving as the season progressed. As the second leading scorer on the team and named offensive player of the year, Maddie was something of an in-the-water coach.
Coach Tom Hyham explains, “She analyzed every game from start to finish after it was played and when asked, she provided me with detailed feedback. Maddie was also very good about
providing feedback regarding style and approach. It takes a very confident player and person to have the strength to step up the way that she has. She also excels in the classroom, being named to the Association of College Water Polo Coaches 2019 Women’s All Academic Team.” Coach Hyham has found South Florida a rich recruiting area. Two other La Salle players are from Broward–senior Racquel Jimenez from South Broward, and sophomore Sabrina Hoffmeister from St. Thomas Aquinas–and he is looking for more. On a recent recruiting trip, he saw several high school prospects who “played at levels I would expect to see from college players.”

The Energy Upstart WHEN A YACHT CHEF COULDN’T FIND A PROTEIN BAR HE COULD EAT, HE INVENTED ONE. By Eric Barton | Photography by Austen Amacker
F
amily and old friends have a way of being more honest with us than anybody else, which is why, when Paul Kahan was home five years ago for a wedding, everybody told him he looked awful. He was down about 40 pounds, and while he just thought he was losing a bit of weight, everyone back in Virginia saw a problem. He had blood work done, and when the doctor called with the results, the message was dire: Go to the hospital right now. Kahan’s blood sugar was so high he was nearly in a diabetic coma, and he spent the next five days in the hospital. He was diagnosed with adult-onset juvenile diabetes. While living with it can be tough on anyone, Kahan, now 33, had it especially rough. He’s a yacht chef, whose employers include Las Olas property owner and financier Steve Hudson. All day he has to try the food he’s making, meaning keeping his blood sugar consistent is a constant battle. “Imagine being on a boat where your job is to cook and eat all day, and you’re constantly injecting insulin and checking your blood sugar,” he says. Perhaps the toughest thing he discovered was that there were no options when he needed a quick, on-the-go snack, or a quick burst of
28
OCTOBER 2019
energy to keep his levels up. He discovered the protein bars he had been eating for years were loaded with sugars. “Clif bars, I found out, have nearly as much sugar as a Snickers,” he says. He’s right: Many of the marketed-as-healthy protein bars include five or more grams of sugar. Kahan started experimenting with a simple idea: a small bar that packs nutrients, protein and everything you need to keep going. Not just for diabetics to eat, but for anyone looking for a quick meal without lots of sugar. After years of trials and samples given to friends, relatives and employers, Kahan narrowed down a few recipes, which include all organic nut butters, grass-fed whey protein and all organic sweeteners. For flavors, Kahan settled on peanut butter, cranberry-almond and chia chocolate. Then he dipped into his past as a yacht chef, adding flavors he created for homemade ice cream his clients loved—and that he could taste only in moderation—including cookies and cream and birthday cake. Last year he sent the recipes to a company in California that manufactured and packaged 15,000 one-ounce bars. He calls
them NRG Bites. Among the first retail spots Kahan got them into was the LA Fitness in Fort Lauderdale. They sold out within a week. The second supply he sent over sold out a week later. The bars are now in nine retail spots, and Kahan says he saw the same quick sales, without any kind of marketing. In mid-August, Kahan got a second 15,000-bar shipment. Using a loan from his family and, for now, working out of his house in Victoria Park, he now has four employees and a goal of blanketing retail spots from convenience stores to supermarkets. He knows his next shipment likely needs to be a million-plus bars, and for that, he’s quickly learning how to scale up. “I’ve realized the potential here is to turn from a small side project into a major business,” Kahan says. He says he still loves being a yacht chef, and occasionally still goes out on longtime clients’ boats—but now he’s got a taste of life as an entrepreneur. “Oh I am, oh man, I’m thrilled with it,” he says. “When you have everyone who works with you like, ‘Oh, this is going to be huge,’ it’s really freaking awesome to come to work every day.”

The Return of the Seaplane ROB CERAVOLO ALWAYS KNEW HE’D FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF A CHARACTER FROM A BOOK BY JIMMY BUFFETT. By Eric Barton | Photography by Austen Amacker
B
ack when Rob Ceravolo piloted fighter planes over Iraq, he’d fly seven days a week, sometimes seven hours straight. He’d return at maybe 1 a.m., staring down at the flashing lights of a bobbing aircraft carrier. “I would look at that aircraft carrier and, every time, I’d be thinking, ‘What did I get myself into?’” Ceravolo, 44, recalls. “It was a whole lot like starting a company for the first time.” The company Ceravolo started, while still active duty in the Navy in 2009, took everything he had to get going. But now Tropic Ocean Airways claims to be the largest amphibious airline in the world. Ceravolo grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and he knew he wanted to be a fighter pilot ever since his Italian immigrant father would tell him World War II stories about American planes screaming overhead, signaling the pending liberation of his village. He added seaplane pilot to his to-do list after he took a ride in a seaplane and read the Jimmy Buffett book “Where Is Joe Merchant?” with the lead character who’s a former Navy airman who becomes a seaplane pilot. Near the end of his 14 years flying for the Navy, he took a motorcycle trip with a
30
OCTOBER 2019
buddy across Italy. Along the way, Ceravolo read “Screw It, Let’s Do It” by Richard Branson, and the message about taking a risk convinced him to finally try the dream he had as a kid. Ceravolo sold his house, boat, motorcycle and Porsche and maxed out his credit cards to buy a 1976 Cessna 206 Stationair seaplane. He was days away from bankruptcy in 2011 when he finally got approval from the Federal Aviation Administration. The two $100 bills he made for his first flight are framed over his desk now with the message: “Break in case of bankruptcy.” By 2013, he hit up friends and family for investments and bought a Cessna 208 Caravan model that can transport eight people. The company has grown 30 to 40 percent yearly since, now with 13 planes and flew more than 35,000 passengers last year. With more than 100 employees, Tropic has operations in eight countries. After Hurricane Dorian devastated the Bahamas, Tropic began collecting supplies that Ceravolo said would be delivered with his company’s planes, by parachute if necessary. With extensive damage to Bahamian airports, his planes had a better shot at reaching the islands. Among the reasons Tropic Ocean Air-
ways has worked, Ceravolo says, is that he set out to change the culture of seaplane travel. “Seaplane pilots have always had this reputation as cowboyish,” Ceravolo says, noting that seaplanes had several accidents this summer in Alaska. “We simply wanted to make it more professional.” Ceravolo believes seaplanes solve many of the problems of airlines, including exorbitant airport gate charges, congested runways and the lack of airstrips in rural areas and islands, which has equaled a five-star rating on TripAdvisor. While seaplanes were once mostly the toys of the super-rich, Ceravolo set out to make them more accessible. “We’ve got celebrities—we actually just flew someone you’d know about an hour ago to her private island—and we also have just regular people going on vacation,” he says. A seat on a plane to Bimini, for instance, costs about $400 and comes with a far easier security check-in. So he could concentrate fully on the company’s growth, Ceravolo stopped flying five years ago, although he’ll take over at the controls occasionally when he takes a flight. But he says he’s no less committed: perhaps as proof, on his right forearm, is a tattoo of the company’s logo, a Frigatebird in flight soaring in front of the sun.

Slip into Serenity at The Shore Club The only Long Bay Beach property in Providenciales offers an ideal getaway for guests wanting to come and go unnoticed. By A LY S S A M O R L A C C I
I
t’s curious how at The Shore Club in Turks and Caicos during an early morning spent sipping coffee on the balcony, there is no people watching to be done. There’s only the show the sun puts on as it rises above the east shore on Long Bay Beach, making the water below glitter like sequins under stage lights. Sightings of staff seem rare, but this isn’t because they aren’t there. They appear when you need them; ghosts when you don’t. It’s the reason you’ve never seen the maintenance worker before until he knocks on your suite door to fix that flickering light bulb you didn’t notice until now. High levels of service here are accomplished using a tunnel system beneath the resort, much like the method used at theme parks like Disney World. Though, this secret passageway has two uses. It doubles as a walkway for resort employees and an entrance for visitors of the property who want to arrive in secrecy. High-profile guests can be shuttled from the parking lot straight to one of the on-property villas that house up to 14 guests at a time. Arriving through the basement, an elevator lifts them to the first floor by the kitchen, which is fully stocked in advance of their stay. A resort chef can prepare intimate meals inside the expansive, open space

while guests enjoy their pool, an outdoor shower, courtyard and terrace. Other perks include private butler services to kiteboarding lessons. Since the first villas debuted nearly two years ago, guests have ranged from A-list actors, to wedding parties, to swimsuit companies shooting their next catalog. At press time, the final two villas of the six-villa collection were on track to open by December, and while they have their apparent advantages, guests of the 106 ocean-view junior suites, one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, and two penthouses on property are equally spoiled. There are four on-site pools; a wellness center; the Dune Spa; and Sui-Ren, a Japanese-Peruvian fusion restaurant serving a variety of dishes from sushi rolls to ceviche. The Caribbean-chic property was developed by Hartling Group, which is known for a signature style that seamlessly blends interiors and exteriors. This theme can be found at sister properties on the island, including The Sands at Grace Bay and The Palms Turks and Caicos. Guests at The Shore Club can visit both resorts using a free shuttle service that picks up at the lobby. (above) An onproperty villa can accommodate up to 14 guests.

Before departing from the island, guests should make a reservation at The Palms’ Parallel 23. The al fresco restaurant looks like a European courtyard, and the menu is indulgent with appetizers like tuna tartar and chicken satay, to main courses like the Caicos Bank Grouper served on a bed of chickpea, turmeric cream and arugula. Turndown service at The Shore Club includes a neatly tucked bed with slippers set to each side, a bottle of water and a chocolate on the nightstand, and a quote on a square piece of cardstock. “Live the story you want to tell,” one says. Of course, those staying at the resort have already met this challenge.

MAR-A-LAGO AND ME
A WRITER RECALLS SUMMERS GROWING UP AT THE PALM BEACH ESTATE. By Jennifer Rahel Conover

ar-a-Lago and I have been involved intimately my whole life, one incarnation after another. Through a happy twist of fate, my maternal grandfather was the honorable Joseph E. Davies, and my step-grandmother was the legendary Marjorie Merriweather Post. Going to my grandparents’ was always exciting because granddaddy was more of a father than my actual father, an army general who was always traveling, at war, womanizing and not in the least fond of small children. He was good looking to the extreme, 6 feet, 7 inches and a world-class polo player, which undoubtedly added to his savoir-faire with the ladies. The first time I had a chance to explore Mar-a-Lago in depth was when we came down from Washington, D.C., early one year well before the season, which ran from Christmas until Easter. This particular year my mother, governess and I arrived in September when there was only a skeletal staff, although it would be considered gigantic by any other standard. So I had plenty of time to explore every nook and cranny of Mar-a-Lago to my heart’s content, as long as I did my homework and didn’t get in anyone’s way. At the time, I didn’t know the reason we were there early was so mother could establish residency to apply for a divorce as she’d accidentally discovered the latest women in my father’s life (there were always more than one!). Meanwhile, I was allowed to zip over to the Bath and Tennis Club to get my swimming lessons. At age 6, this made me feel extremely sophisticated and rather soigné. Of course, the reason this was possible was because Aunt Marjorie, as she disliked being called “grandmother,” had constructed a huge tunnel under AIA to protect the kiddies when they went to the beach or the B&T. Mar-a-Lago was a dream right out of “The Arabian Nights.” This was Aunt Marjorie’s second home in Palm Beach, the first being Hogarcito, or “Little Cottage,” over on Golfview Road. The name is as ironic as calling the Newport mansions “summer cottages.” Though not as lavish as Mar-a-Lago, it was still a most impressive home. Aunt Marjorie realized she needed something more grandiose than Hogarcito if she were to become the doyenne of the social scene. She would have to surpass El Mirasol, Lucretia Stotesbury’s famous estate. She obtained a geological survey to find the most solid coral ridge in Palm Beach to anchor the house. It would have to be on solid ground to support the home she had in mind and resist Florida’s hurricanes. For weeks, she crawled through animal paths along with the intrepid James Griffin—carpenter, caretaker and head groundskeeper—in search of the perfect location. They finally settled on a 17-acre tract that went from sea to lake, hence “Mar-a-Lago.” Once again, she chose Marion Wyeth, the soft-spoken Paris educated architect who had designed Hogarcito. She wanted a different style of house this time; one that could be constructed so the main rooms and the bedrooms could be accessed from a patio or courtyard, but she wasn’t excited by any of Wyeth’s drawings.

Then came a stroke of luck. While on a fishing trip to Florida in 1925, Flo Ziegfeld advised her to use Joe Urban, a Viennese architect who had some new, exciting ideas and had designed the lavish Ziegfeld Theater, as well as stage sets for the Metropolitan Opera. He had also served as architect to Emperor Franz Joseph and Hungary’s Count Carl Esterházy. As far as Aunt Marjorie was concerned, that did it. She cabled Urban immediately, and he arrived in Palm Beach 10 days later. She didn’t want the typical Spanish architecture so popular in Palm Beach at the time. Instead, she preferred something romantic and imaginative, and with Urban she got it. Because she did not want to make the house seem too big from the road, they decided to face the house away from AIA and form it around a large patio overlooking Lake Worth that would serve as a centerpiece for the 115-room estate. According to Urban, it would be a large crescent shape HispanoMoresque structure topped by a solitary tower. He alternately thrilled and horrified Aunt Marjorie by threatening to ruin her million-dollar budget, which, by the way, he did. Whenever she balked at the expenses he would say in his thick Viennese accent, “Oh, but Mrs. M., it is so beautiful!” Inspired from the views on all sides, Aunt Marjorie planned from the beginning to call the house Mar-a-Lago. The crescentshaped patio was girded by a curved cloister facing that shore. From there, guests could descend to the lawn or enter the cloister, which had staircases leading up to the second-story bedrooms. While on a trip to New York, Aunt Marjorie was walking on a Long Island Sound beach and discovered similarly shaped oval stones that were about the size of bread rolls in soft, multicolor hues and thought they would be perfect for the patio. She picked up all she could carry, and the next day, she sent a group of men (which grew in the next few days to a force of more than 600) to scour the beach for more stones. They picked up all they could find, sending them by rail to Florida. Despite not finding nearly enough, the enterprising Jimmy Griffin began searching other Long Island beaches and with his crew found similar stones, picking them up and shipping them south until the contractor finally said they had plenty. Today, that might be a problem with the ecologists, but in those days there was no thought. As the bills continued to mount, Aunt Marjorie had to call in Wyeth, her original architect and tell him he had to come back and manage the project as, “Urban may be an artist, but he’s definitely not a practical man.” She pleaded, “He doesn’t know anything about plumbing, heating, electricity or half the other things that go into making up a house.” Finally Wyeth agreed both to manage the job and to try and control Urban’s wild flights of

fancy that were proving so costly. The house was already way over budget; the final cost was more than $5 million, as opposed to the $1 million she had originally appropriated. But it would probably cost more than $500 million today. Because of the two architects—one classical and the other art nouveau—the house could not be said to be of one design or style, but whatever it was, it was spectacular. Among the other disparate building supplies that went into it, there were three boatloads of doric stone from Genoa. In the center of the living room on a slightly raised section (to make the most of the view) was an enormous window edged with stone pelicans, said to be the largest picture window ever built in the world at that time. This was my Captain Nemo window. Through it I sailed the seven seas, collecting great treasures from all over the ancient world. Wyeth added a rare collection of Moorish and Spanish tiles from the estate of New York socialite Mrs. Horace Havemeyer. Aunt Marjorie thought she was buying about 20,000 tiles, but there were more than double when the shipment arrived. One local architect at the time claimed Mar-a-Lago had more Hispano-Moorish tiles than anywhere outside the Alhambra in Spain. The tiles were a real stroke of luck for Donald Trump when he bought the property, as he found a huge cache of them in the garages and was able to use them when he converted some of the garages and servants’ quarters into the spa and guest quarters, having them tie together with the main house.

Inside the mansion is a 34foot high ceiling in the living room designed around a series of tall needlework tapestries, which once hung in a Venetian palazzo. To sustain the Italian theme, the ceiling was hand gilded in a sunburst design modified from the thousandwinged ceiling motif of the Accademia in Florence. Similarly, the seven arches around the living room were decorated in a millefleur background with the armorial insignia of the Venetian Doges. Beneath that were rare gilded Spanish lanterns, a 16th-century Spanish rug and a hooded Italian gothic fireplace, which is nothing less than breathtaking. Toward the back of the living room are four marble steps with Italian columns mounted on stone lions leading up to my Captain Nemo window where I voyaged endlessly as a child. Just beyond the fireplace is an arch leading to another small room called the monkey loggia, having stone carvings of the creatures, which somehow never appealed to me. A few years ago, I interviewed Donald Trump in New York for another article. He had no idea who I was or that I had any connection to the family or the property. Only knowing I lived in Fort Lauderdale, he said I’d have to visit Mar-a-Lago and see the additions he’d made to the property. When we finished, he asked if there was anything else I needed, so I said I’d just like to have one more party there. He was caught completely by surprise. I explained my family connection and that I’d spent part of every winter there as a child and continued to be a regular guest until Aunt Marjorie passed away. He graciously agreed, and we had an event for our cruising yacht club. When word got out about the party, we had any number of requests for new memberships. Since then, my step-cousin, Marjorie Post Dye, or Marwee (as she was known in the family), and I would meet there every year. She lived in Santa Monica in what we jokingly referred to as Mar-a-Lago West. Until Marwee’s recent death, at times during our stay we would dine with Trump or his sister. Whatever one thinks about Trump’s politics, he has done a fabulous job with Mar-a-Lago. He bought it furnished and has retained all of its original grandeur, tying in the additions and renovations of various spaces so they look like an original part of the property. My only reservation is that Trump has adopted our coat of arms as his own. It is The family crest with Trump’s carved into the hood of the firealterations place with the word “Integritas” as its motto. In the beginning, he took out “Integritas” and changed it to “Mar-a-Lago,” which I rather liked and thought Aunt Marjorie and granddaddy would have liked as well. But now he has changed it to “Trump.” It is now his logo on everything; clothes, golf hats and even the towels in the men’s and ladies’ rooms. To give him credit, he probably thought it was the Post crest, but it most definitely belongs to the Davies family.

Talento Executive chef Luigi Criscuolo brings time-honored family recipes to Fort Lauderdale By Melissa Puppo | Photos By Victor Garcia Barbagelata

hen it comes to Italian cuisine, family heirloom recipes are a sure way to win over a diner’s heart. Take the Strozzapreti served at Las Olas’ new kid on the block, Talento, for example. Executive chef Luigi Criscuolo, who hails from the Amalfi Coast, brings this seafood pasta dish and a wealth of other passed-down favorites to locals. He, along with owners Maurizio Turella and Sandro Picciurro, opened the contemporary southern Italian restaurant in the summer offering a lineup of Italian classics and some revamped dishes. The restaurant is posh with upholstered, cream-colored seating and booths, and an eye-catching LED water feature separating the dining room from a marble bar that’s stocked to make a crisp Aperol Spritz. Guests can revel in the private wine room surrounded by vintage bottles that sits adjacent to a wrap-around glass showcase featuring imported meats and cheeses. While Criscuolo runs the kitchen, his Sicilian-born wife, Angela Gullotta, manages the front. She’s easily spotted when giving
guests recommendations on starters like the grilled octopus and grilled focaccia with olive oil. What diners won’t find on the menu is “mainstream Italian.” Swap the spaghetti and meatballs for Pacchero Talento, a mix of crab and shrimp with tube-like pasta in a spicy tomato sauce. Other specialties include the Montanaro (sausage and Parmesan cheese risotto with fresh shaved black truffle), to Tomahawk steaks, to imported Branzino. Fans of classics will enjoy a slice of the Emilia pizza topped with imported prosciutto, crushed tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, arugula and shaved Parmesan. The restaurant also caters to those with dietary restrictions by offering a large selection of vegan and vegetarian options, including tofu balls breaded and baked with spinach and almonds. Get tastebud-worthy satisfaction for dessert while digging into Talento’s rich, creamy tiramisu or spoonfuls of silky hazelnut gelato.

I
t was in a restaurant with several TVs showing sports. There was no sound, but we knew instantly when we saw Chicago Bears uniforms and a shot of actor James Caan that this was a piece about Pic, and the old film “Brian’s Song.” It is a story that comes around every football season, and loses little of its poignancy with the years. The film, made for TV, has proved one of the most enduring works in that category. Pic was the nickname his friends had for Brian Piccolo, who grew up in Fort Lauderdale, starred for what is now St. Thomas Aquinas High and Wake Forest and died at age 26 when playing for the Bears. The film is about his close interracial friendship with his roommate Gale Sayers, the Bears’ legendary halfback who had suffered a knee injury that would cut short a brilliant career. The central theme, of course, was the early death of Piccolo from a rare form of cancer in 1970. We heard a lot about Brian Piccolo when we arrived in town in 1971. He had been dead just a year. We hung out in Nick’s Lounge on Sunrise Boulevard a few years later, and a number of guys from the Piccolo era were patrons. Among them Bill Thies, Ed Trombetta and Bill Bondurant—all former athletes at Central Catholic before it changed its name to St. Thomas Aquinas. Over the years, we realized there was a back story to Brian Piccolo’s life in Fort Lauderdale: the unusual teammates he had in high school. In the mid-1980s, we came to know that story better when we wrote a piece for Sunshine, the Sun-Sentinel’s

Sunday magazine at the time. It was a story that wrote itself. By phone we interviewed Ed McCaskey, whose family owned the Chicago Bears. He got us in touch with Gale Sayers, who modestly said Brian Piccolo had kept the name Gale Sayers alive. We spoke to Piccolo’s widow, Joy, a high school sweetheart by whom he had three daughters, and his high school coach, Jim Kurth. We even got input from the cancer specialist who treated Piccolo, and who said his highly publicized death led to renewed research that had made a deadly form of cancer almost totally curable just 15 years later. hat story also benefitted from the recollections of Piccolo’s high school teammates who live in the area, and who turned out to be a most distinguished group. We got to know Dr. Dan Arnold, a leading children’s dentist, who loved to talk about his friend and how they competed to see who could make the most money. All who knew Piccolo confirmed his burning ambition to be successful and wealthy. He had not had a happy home environment, which friends thought motivated him to be a strong
T
family man, with financial success. We also interviewed attorney William Zloch, a name we recognized as a former Notre Dame quarterback, who would shortly be named to the federal bench. Over the last 35 years he has risen to become a highly respected U.S. District Senior Judge. Dr. Arnold, a halfback, and Judge Zloch, quarterback, were joined in the backfield with fullback John Graham. At 160 pounds, he blocked more than ran the ball. He wound up with a long and highly successful career with Nabisco, much of the time in Palm Beach County. He is now retired in Haines City where he and his wife still operate a food brokerage business. Piccolo, although a star, was not considered the best college prospect on the team. That was a big lineman, Bill Salter, who went to Wake Forest with Piccolo, but had a mediocre career there. Afterward, however, he became the third highest-ranking officer in the Sears organization, back when it was a formidable retail power. The list goes on. Prominent builder/banker Jack Abdo was also on the team (“I didn’t play at all”) but was a close and deeply affectionate Piccolo friend through both grade and high school. Attorney Frank Walker did play, both ways, wide receiver and defensive end. He became president of the Broward County Bar Association and still gives speeches about Piccolo. Brian Piccolo’s teammates are a remarkably successful group. Pic, who wanted to be the richest guy on the block, would appreciate the competition.

Larry Feuer Community Foundation of Broward Legacy Society Member
“I Locked In My Legacy” “ Like many people, I wasn’t sure how to use my estate plan to give back to the
community I love – to establish my own legacy of philanthropy. The team at the Community Foundation of Broward showed me how easy it is to use my estate plan to create an endowed charitable Fund in my name that will live on forever. I now have peace of mind knowing that when I’m gone, distributions from my charitable Fund will support the things I care about in Broward for generations to come. It feels good to be bold!” Read more about Larry’s Legacy at cfbroward.link/LarrysLegacy
