NEW MEMBERSHIPS AND WELCOME EVENTS The Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE) stands as a beacon of positive change and impact. The Coalition continuously works with forward-thinking businesses to leverage collective action, share best practices, and carve pathways to advance workplace gender equality (WGE), women’s economic empowerment (WEE), and diversity, equity & inclusion (DEI). From July to December 2023, we are pleased to announce that Evident Integrated Marketing & PR, Foundever, and Emerson have recently joined PBCWE as our newest member companies. We are equally proud to share that, at present, PBCWE is composed of 42 member companies, representing industry-leading businesses committed to accelerating progress towards greater equality in the world of work.
Furthermore, beginning 2023, PBCWE is proud to extend a warm welcome to our esteemed new member companies joining the Coalition through “Welcome Events”. The Welcome Events are designed to formally engage senior leaders and core team members and to jumpstart their commitment as WGE, WEE, and DEI champions. To date, seven (7) Welcome Events have been staged to mark the beginning of their exciting journey and contribute to the growing business case that links gender equality to improved company performance.
CEO Visioning Workshop On 29 September 2023, business leaders from diverse sectors and industries convened for the CEO Visioning Workshop led by the Philippine Women's Economic Network (PhilWEN) and PBCWE. The workshop was led by PBCWE Member Company DDB Group Philippines, with Craig Lonnee (Chief Development Officer), Marie Pascual (Brand Planning Director), and Chichi de Luna (Tribal DDB's Executive Experience Director) as main facilitators. As a take-off point, the Male Champions of Change (MCC) Philippines was born out of a collaboration between Champions of Change Institute, PBCWE, and Investing in Women as a leadership strategy for gender equality in the Philippines. In 2023, the initial strategy evolved into a sustainable, locallydriven CEO advocacy arm of PBCWE following four years of deep dive immersion in the Champions of Change model with the Founding Members of MCC Philippines. The CEO platform is anchored on a "thinking globally and acting locally" approach.
Jollibee Group bolsters commitment to inclusive workspace with Anti-Sexual Harassment Training As part of its efforts to promote a safe and inclusive work environment for its employees and customers, the Jollibee Group partnered with PBCWE and the Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) in training over 10,000 store teams and employees of the company on anti-sexual harassment in the workplace. Called “Creating Safe and Respectful Workplaces: A Webinar on Anti-Sexual Harassment and the Safe Spaces Act of 2019,” the virtual learning sessions were conducted from July to September this year for store teams of Jollibee, Chowking, Mang Inasal, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Burger King, Yoshinoya, and Panda Express, as well as employees from the different support functions and subsidiaries of the Jollibee Group. Educating employees on relevant policies and laws such as Republic Act No. 11313 or the Safe Spaces Act of 2019 is part of ongoing programs in the Jollibee Group that promote an inclusive workspace, consistent with the company’s commitment to championing employee well-being. THE NEW GEARS WEBSITE IS NOW LIVE! The Gender Equality Assessment, Results, and Strategies (GEARS) tool was the first WGE assessment tool designed specifically for the ASEAN market. As the first and only Workplace Gender Equality (WGE) diagnostic tool of its kind, GEARS provides unparalleled insights and actionable recommendations for progressing gender equality in your organisation. This tool offers a valuable resource for businesses seeking to gain perspectives on their current strategies in relation to WGE. By identifying gaps, opportunities, and strengths, companies can be empowered to make informed decisions and take action towards achieving their goals. Based on the comprehensive diagnostic tool developed by Australia’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency’s (WGEA), GEARS has been designed for and successfully applied by over 50 companies in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar. GEARS ACTIVITIES Action Planning Workshops
Home Credit

On 6 July 2023, PBCWE led an in-person action planning workshop attended by Home Credit's core team members. The discussion was centered on the company's vision to become a strong advocate of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace.
On 11 October 2023, the PBCWE team led a Workplace Gender Equality (WGE) Assessment action planning session with Sanofi Philippines.
Home Credit was able to complete the Gender Equality Assessment, Results, and Strategies (GEARS) in June 2023. Through GEARS, the company was able to identify a series of targeted objectives to strengthen its existing DEI policies. This reflects Home Credit's commitment to its employees and stakeholders, ensuring that there are no small roles to create a lasting and meaningful change.
From January to March 2023, Sanofi underwent the Gender Equality Assessment, Results, and Strategies (GEARS) diagnostic tool offered by PBCWE. Sanofi's key initiatives include its commitment to achieving gender balance in recruitment, selection, and promotion. The company is also taking proactive steps to ensure that employees are fairly compensated for their skills, experience, and contribution, regardless of gender.

On 22 August 2023, PBCWE led an action planning session with Meralco. Present in the session were team members from Sustainability, Learning & Development, and HR.
Cebu Pacific is the first airline company in the Philippines to have undergone a comprehensive review of policies and strategies through GEARS
Meralco is the first distribution utility member company of PBCWE. They are also the first company in its industry to undergo the Gender Equality Assessment, Results, and Strategies (GEARS) tool completed in July 2023.
For Cebu Pacific, GEARS has allowed them to identify areas where they are doing well, as well as opportunities that need strategic action. The results presentation was held on 5 December 2023.
Through the action planning session, Meralco aims to create a work environment where all employees can contribute and succeed, as well as regularly track progress and identify areas for improvement.

GEARS ACTIVITIES Commitment to a safe, engaged, and inclusive workplace at Aboitiz Equity Ventures Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) is recognised as one of the best-managed conglomerates in the Philippines. AEV joined PBCWE in March 2021 to help the company build a more resilient and inclusive environment as part of its commitment to the United Nations Global Compact and its Ten Business Principles. A desire to continually improve the broader Diversity Equality and Inclusion (DE&I) strategy was also a motivation. PBCWE’s technical support centred on an internal company-wide assessment called GEARS that guides companies in collecting and analysing Human Resource (HR) statistical data and policies and practices that support WGE. Organisational Capacity Building to Support Workplace Gender Equality in the Philippines On 26 October 2023, the PBCWE-Women's Rights, Action, and Advocacy Project (WRAAP) team led a Policy Consultation Workshop with select PBCWE members, Cebu Pacific Air, DDB Group Philippines, PLDT-Smart Communications, Inc., and Teleperformance Philippines, to analyse the current state of their policies related to Workplace Gender Equality and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and to formulate a policy roadmap to implement such policies more effectively. Together with PBCWE-WRAAP Policy Consultants - Mariel Quiogue, Patricia PronstollerTolentino, Vanessa Pallarco, and Malou Victorio - the discussion was anchored on how data gathering and communications strategies can kickstart policy enhancement. The participants were able to identify driving and restraining forces, as well as specific action steps with timelines. The workshop was organised by PBCWE and PhilWEN, with support from Global Affairs Canada and the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

Women in Engineering Visioning Workshop On 20 July 2023, PBCWE led a Visioning Workshop for the Women in Engineering (WIE) Movement led by PBCWE Member Company ESCA Engineering and CECOPHIL and hosted by the DTI CIAP Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines. The workshop began with inspiring messages and success stories from business leaders from the construction and engineering industry. The participants highlighted the importance of nurturing a safe space for employees, especially women, to close the gender gap and fuel innovation and progress. The WIE Movement is an effort to bring together passionate advocates, industry pioneers, and aspiring leaders. It serves as a platform to strategise ways to empower and uplift women in industries where they should be visible.
30th National Public Relations Congress PBCWE Program Manager Jennifer Mendoza joined the roster of industry-leading experts who graced the GNOMON: The 30th National Public Relations Congress event held on 14-15 September 2023 at the Fairmont Hotel, Makati City, sharing her invaluable insights on championing public relations from intention to impact.
National Consultation on Unpaid Care and Domestic Work PhilWEN Founding Chairperson and President and PBCWE Governing Council Chairperson Boots Garcia was invited as a panelist at the National Consultation on Unpaid Care and Domestic Work on 28-29 September 2023 at Novotel Araneta City, Cubao. Ms. Garcia gladly shared that the private sector is taking deliberate action to close the widening gender gap through comprehensive company policies, putting a premium on care and employee health.
ASPLI Convention The theme for this year's Convention is "Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Journey with a Commitment to Customer Service Excellence". As a champion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace, Accenture in the Philippines’ Managing Director and I&D Sponsor, Jenny Hans, shared the company’s best practices and technologies in terms of engaging the workforce and improving the delivery of excellent customer service experiences. The Convention was held in Twin Lakes, Tagaytay City.
For gender transformative change to take place, PBCWE recommends to 1) challenge negative social norms through education, 2) make childcare services available and affordable, and 3) promote equal sharing of home production through family-friendly national policies.
Asia-Pacific 2023 WEPs Forum PhilWEN and PBCWE joined the Asia-Pacific 2023 Women's Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Forum held at Citadines Bay City Manila on 7-8 November 2023.
DFAT Brownbag Session PBCWE Program Manager Jennifer Mendoza, together with the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce Chairperson Ronn Astillas, discussed the business case DEI, including the state of private sector practices in the Philippines, pressing issues surrounding LGBTQIA+ and disability inclusion, and proven approaches to address DEI issues and build the workplace of tomorrow. The session was organised by the Australian Embassy in Manila last 18 October 2023.

ADB Gender Forum Jose Paolo L. Delgado, President and CEO of Delbros Group, highlighted the importance of mainstreaming a gender equality perspective in strategies, programs, and financing plans at the ADB Gender Forum. The event took place on 21–22 November 2023 at the ADB Headquarters in Manila, Philippines under the theme of “2 Billion Changemakers – Women Leading on Climate Action in Asia and the Pacific”. The event served as a platform for 300+ participants from ADB and its developing member countries, including representatives from governments, development partners, the private sector, media, civil society, and women’s organizations, to share best practices on gender mainstreaming in climate-related initiatives and to advance the transformative nexus between SDG 5 on gender equality and SDG 13 on climate action.

SGV Alignment Meeting on Sustainability Reporting As part of PBCWE's policy reform agenda on promoting high-quality gender reporting among publicly listed companies, the team had a touchbase meeting with SGV & Co. The discussion was anchored on possible engagement opportunities given the issuance of the two international sustainability standards - IFRS S1 and IFRS S2 - by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).
SEC fully supports first gender bonds in PH The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), through SEC Memorandum Circular 9, Series of 2019, or the Guidelines on the Issuance of Social Bonds under the Asean Social Bonds Standards in the Philippines, successfully facilitated the issuance by ASA Philippines Foundation Inc. of gender bonds as social bonds. Groups urge PH to ratify ILO convention on ending workplace violence, harassment Originally published by Rappler Representatives of different labor groups on 27 September 2023 urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to swiftly ratify an International Labor Organization (ILO) convention that would address intersectional issues that cause workplace violence. This is not an issue exclusive to the Philippines, with UNESCO publishing a 2021 call to action to end violence against women where they reported that approximately 30% to 40% of Asian women suffered sexual harassment in the workplace. Women and girls represent half of the global population and girls represent half of the global population and therefore, half of the world’s potential. Gender equality, besides being a fundamental right, is essential to achieve peaceful societies and inclusive development. The United Nations (UN), however, warns that “There is still a long way to go to achieve full equality of rights and opportunities between men and women.”
Having more women in the engineering industry is a significantly welcome change with more taking on senior management roles and leading major real estate and infrastructure projects. The PBCWE Executive Team, together with our counterparts in Indonesia and Myanmar, recently participated at the Business Coalition (BC) Regional Learning Event hosted by Investing in Women on 21-23 November 2023 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
