MOTHER’S DAY HONOR
T

he sunset years of our existence on this earth have been portrayed as being an idyllic period where because we have attained a certain numeric age, get to sit back and enjoy the fruit of our labor. We are told that this is the time to relax and appreciate all that we have been able to accomplish down through the years. In addition, we are encouraged to do so because many have not made it to this point. There are many who have not been afforded the opportunity to make it to this stage of life, so we ought to be grateful for having been able to do so. But our Mom has. Mom has reached that time in life where she is afforded the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the fruits of her labor. She has earned the right to not only reflect, but to also glow in her accomplishments. Lillie Janice Brooks has given birth to three sons, all of whom are ministers of the Gospel of Christ. She has enjoyed the presence of ten grandchildren, and she has gracefully entered the period of life called the Golden years. And because of these successes, and the many more that we do not have time to recite, we salute her on this day that has been set aside to commemorate our Mothers. These last few years have seen our mother encounter and conquer several challenges, both physical and emotional. Because of the onset of advancing years, Mom can’t get around like she used to. She isn’t quite as nimble as she used to be, and she isn’t quite as independent as she wants (and demands) to be. Her favorite saying to my brothers and me as we try to assist her in various activities is, “You ain’t the boss of me!” And she’s right; we aren’t. But we are her sons, and she and Pop raised us right. We grew up in a strict household where the rules were cut in stone and the phrase, “…because I said so” was meant to be a very sufficient answer to the question of why…and if it wasn’t, there was a belt nearby to convince us of its sufficiency! We grew up in a household where respect and honor for our parents were etched into the very fabric of our souls. We grew up in a household where, because the Bible was taught and preached, “honor thy mother and thy father” was one of the first Scriptures we learned as children. Consequently, we grew up in a household where my father’s singular mantra, which he repeated daily was, “Take care of your mother!” And that is what we do. At any time, Mom can call on any one of the three of us, and we will come running. At any time, a request can be made of the three of us, and we will expend every effort to accommodate our mother. Because that is how we were raised. Lillie Janice Brooks. To the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, she is the First Lady. To us, her children, she is the rock of our family. She is the Queen of our domain. She is the voice of reason and the reflection of Honor. She is our Mother, and we are grateful to have her with us. FATHER’S DAY HONOR

O
ne year ago, this past March, my family and I experienced an event so traumatic, it has left a lasting impression upon every single member of our clan; my father’s brush with the Death Angel.
As a parent, none of us wants to see their child experience any kind of hardship; however, we understand that hardship is a process in this thing called life. But it’s a different story when the tables are reversed, and we must watch our parents physically struggle for the very essence of life! March 3, 2021 was an extraordinary experience because we witnessed the truthfulness of our father’s fragility. Yes, the Death Angel is real, and it is a concept that introduces itself early in life, but the notion of your parent’s demise, though it is understood that it will occur, takes on a whole new level of understanding when it is in your face. The one lasting impression of this event showcased itself in the servitude of my brothers and me to our Dad. After he left the hospital, he needed assistance with the most basic of needs. Without being graphic, we served him to the best of our abilities, without even a whimper of a complaint or resentment. We served because we had been trained to do so. We served because it was our responsibility to take care of our father! But we could tell, he wasn’t comfortable with being incapacitated and helpless. It was one thing to have strange people roaming in and out of the hospital room poking and probing and collecting all kinds of fluids, but it became something completely different when it was his sons. His humanistic ego kicked in and his first instinct was embarrassment and discomfort. No grown man wants to go through the process of being cared for to that level. But here’s the kicker…we watched our dad take care of his dad in the same manner. Our actions toward our dad didn’t just materialize out of thin air; we had a blueprint. Our blueprint was our father taking care of his father. How could we do anything less for him when he showed us how to “honor thy mother and father”? We could not. We would not. We did what we knew to do…not because we were told…but because we were shown! Not because we had to…but because it was our demonstration of love to the man who gave us life. Our father has always been a little rough around the edges with his sons. He was not blessed to have daughters because God knew he would spoil them rotten. If you need an example, look at his six granddaughters and three great granddaughters!!! But he has imparted to his sons all that he could, and his efforts are visible for all the world to see. No, we are not perfect, but we are all blessed to be ministers of the Gospel. We have raised our children to the best of our abilities. We will strive every day to show honor to our parents through our effort to continue the mindset of servitude and pass it on to our children, so that they may serve as well. WORKIN’ 9 to 5 By Evangelist Neechy Dumas
T
he thought of actually keeping your 9-5 job probably seems like a strange statement coming from anyone who is a full time Entrepreneur, but the truth is, being your own boss (or NOT having a 9 to 5), has become glorified over the last several years, and we’ve lost the true context of what being “self-employed” really means. Obviously, running your own business requires taking a leap of faith--knowing that you have to hustle every day. But there’s no need to add stress on to your “already-full” plate by giving up your day job; especially if you have no solid plan or consistent finances in place. Let me share a few different scenarios with you. Each of these individuals had a regular job at some point, but left their job in order to venture out into full-time Entrepreneurship.
1. JOE • Married, two children, works at one of the big automotive companies. Has a mortgage, car note and other financial responsibilities. Joe has had two fairly good months selling his new nutritional beverage. He gets excited and quits his job, with the thought that he will continue to grow his business. His wife, Sheila, gets pregnant and has to take an early leave from her job. What does Joe do at this point? Would keeping his job have been beneficial until the business made enough income to sustain the household?
2. KELLY • Single, lives with her grandparents, has no true financial responsibilities. Makes a fair number of consistent sales with her stationery business and seems popular on social media. She quits her job at the Veterinarian Clinic to become a full-time craft and stationery seller. Kelly has $350 saved up. Two weeks later, she unexpectedly needs new tires due to hitting a pothole, which will cost her $600. Kelly overdraws from her business account to pay for the tires. Will she be able to purchase the next set of business supplies and inventory?
3. CANDICE • Newly divorced single mom of three, works for a law firm, $65,000 a year salary with benefits. Candice has saved up enough money to cover living expenses for 5 months. She’s had consistent sales with her new candle business, and feels that leaving her job would allow her to pursue and build the business full time. Candice quits her job. The hot water heater in her basement goes out and needs to be replaced. Candice pays for it without issue.

Which of these people made the correct decision? Which of these people, perhaps, could’ve stayed on the job for a little longer? Certainly, there are many variables to every scenario, but one thing is for sure…IT TAKES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY. I always suggest working your personal business after hours and on weekends, with the goal of building it to a point where it can at least take care of your basic household necessities. Leaving a solid 9 to 5 job completely, (with no income coming in on a consistent basis), is not wise. In most cases, a new Entrepreneur has to utilize their personal resources to initially fund the business, unless they receive early business credit, grants or family financial support. And there are other costs to consider, like Health Insurance. Most who are self-employed, do not have proper health insurance if the need arises, but a typical “9-5” job usually provides some type of basic health care insurance for you and your immediate family. In addition, many who are self-employed do not have the finances in place for a “rough” dry business season; or if time away from the business is needed for personal and/or medical reasons. Yet in many cases, a 9-5 job will provide paid time off for tenured employees. As an entrepreneur, you will often find yourself in new and unknown situations, more often than you would like. Things won’t always go as expected. But trust me when I tell you that the small setbacks and failures you may experience will make your motivation, your passion—the reason you started your own business, more refined. Becoming a successful full-time Entrepreneur is definitely a lengthy process, but with much prayer and the right financial planning in place, it is definitely possible to them that believe!

FAITH By Aaron M. Johnson
F
irst and foremost, I am APOSTOLIC! There is nothing or no one I love more than serving the Lord. My family and my life have been rooted in faith and an unwavering belief in a God that can do anything but fail and lie. It was my parents who instilled this faith in me, and I’ve had it ever since.
I was raised in Jackson, MI where my family and I attended Greater Bible Way Temple under the leadership of Bishop Ira Combs Jr., until my dad, Bishop-Elect Rader Johnson, was called to start a church in Bay City, MI. He now pastors Greater Bethel Temple in Louisville, KY and my brother, District Elder Phillip Johnson pastors Apostolic Life Church of Bay City where I attend and play the drums. I am the youngest of six and was the last one in my family to be baptized in Jesus’ name and filled with the Holy Ghost at the young age of 5. It was also at a young age where I developed a love for the game of basketball. Like a lot of kids growing up, I had aspirations of playing in the NBA; however, God had other plans for me and I ultimately took a different route. It was my freshmen year of high school where I remember writing down short- and long-term goals. One of my long-term goals was to work for the Detroit Pistons. Working for an NBA team felt nearly impossible to me because there are only 30 teams and only one in Michigan. The competition of landing a job is through the roof, but God, whom I trusted and believed to do the impossible, ordered my steps. Ultimately through faith, I achieved that goal in the summer of 2014. I attended Northwood University where I studied Entertainment, Sports Promotion and Management with a minor in Marketing. I met the Senior Director of Sales during a sports symposium held at Northwood. I met him two more times again weeks apart and it THE CHRISTIAN OUTLOOK
was on the last meeting when he gave me an interview for an entry level sales position. I worked as an Inside Sales Rep for six months before being promoted to Marketing Coordinator and Executive Assistant to the Chief Marketing Officer. After a short time, I was promoted to Youth Marketing Manager where I served in a role of working with the youth. Fast forward to now, I am the team Brand Strategist. It is my job to tap into the culture of the city of Detroit and Michigan as a whole to connect the team and organization with the community, influencers and celebrities. I also serve as a Game Entertainment Stage Manager where I am responsible for booking national anthem singers, halftime performances and managing the VIP’s who attend the games. The Lord has blessed throughout this journey of working for the Pistons. But I wanted to find a way to allow God to show up in my workplace more. I began infusing more gospel into the game day elements by having gospel artists come and perform anthem and halftime shows. Some of the artists I have had performed so far are Karen Clark Sheard, Jonathan McReynolds, Deitrick Haddon, Dante Bowe, Tim Bowman Jr., Young Men 4 Christ and many praise teams and choirs from all across Michigan, just to name a few. Over these eight years that I have been with the Pistons, it was imperative for me to not put the job over my faith and to always continue to seek first the kingdom of God. It was a challenge at first as a Christian working in a secular industry to keep my faith first. One Scripture has been with me daily is Matthew 5: 15-16…”Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” The key to working as a Christian in the secular world is to always let your light shine and never allow anything to blow your candle out. UNDERDOG’S
MIRACLE By Omar Thompson
B
y many people’s perceptions, I would have been considered an underdog; however, my story reveals the miracle and glory of God and what He can accomplish through a willing and obedient servant. I was recently elected to be the youngest councilman in the Borough of Darby, Pennsylvania. My campaign slogans reveal my faith and values: a) They can’t stop me from winning, b) My future is now, and (c) If they only knew my assignment. My primary Scripture is Joshua 1:3 “I have given you every place where the sole of your foot treads….” In January 2021, I said yes to God’s assignment for me because the Word declares in Proverbs 18:16, “A man’s gift makes room for him….” My earliest start was as the oldest of five siblings. We were born to a carpenter father, and he instilled a strong work ethic within me. My stay-athome mom had high educational goals but dropped out of college to raise her children, but she inspired my academic pursuits. I started school with learning disabilities and challenges; however, I learned the value of perseverance and was victorious. Initially starting in special education, I graduated in the top 10% of my class at Germantown High School in 2005. I graduated from Strayer University with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management in 2009, and I continued by receiving a master’s degree in Business Administration in 2012. I am currently attending Capella University to complete my doctoral degree in Business Administration with a specialization in leadership. I enjoy working at the intersection of leadership dynamics, financial success, operations, and training and development of all persons within an organization. My leadership vision was to create opportunities for youth in the community. I founded an educational nonprofit organization called “The Thompson Scholarship Foundation” in 2007. This organization has provided multiple scholarships for urban minority youth to pursue their opportunities in higher education.

I started this organization because of my experiences and the challenges I faced in overcoming obstacles to become a successful businessman in both career and educational pursuits. Last year, I joined another call to help make a more significant difference in my community to promote change and provide leadership. I decided to run for a councilman position to honor my passion and concern for others. I wanted to not be just another voice among the masses who complained about what was happening but to help shape the change I wanted for every citizen. I realized that for progressive and positive changes to happen, they must first be made locally. As I awaited the election results, I felt at peace, with faith, trust, and humility because the results were all part of God’s assignment for my life. Like Esther, I believe I was “called for such a time as this” to be an instrument of change and work for the betterment of man and society. I give praise and glory to my Father in heaven in all pursuits. He is why I can stay positive and “be strong and courageous” in all of life’s challenges. My testimony is that I am a victor and not just a victim of life. I credit my faith for the underdog’s miracle of victory, and because of His work for me, I want to help others by becoming their advocate. As God continues to reveal His purpose for me, I intend always to be obedient to the next assignment and step forward in faith because, as always, “I am not what they say I am; but I am what my Father says I am!”

1½ lbs. boneless breast of chicken 1 c. batted Russian or Catalina salad dressing 2 tsp. mayonnaise 1 pkt. Lipton onion soup mix ¾ c. apricot preserves
Instructions Put potatoes, thyme in saucepan. Add water and boil together until soft. Drain potatoes and add milk, enough to cover the bottom of the pot. Let simmer 5-10 minutes on low heat. Add butter or margarine, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Mash well and serve.

Melt 1 stick margarine with candy. Cream1 stick margarine with sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, mix well after each. Add flour, soda, salt, but termilk and vanilla, mix well. Add nuts and can dy mixture. Pour into 9x13-inch greased and floured pan. Bake 1½ hours at 300 ° . Frosting: • •
