The route starts at the recreational area of Los Llanos de la Pez, at Barranquillo de la Salvia, in the municipality of Tejeda. As in the case of Las Mesas, in order to get there it is necessary to take the GC-15 main road, known as the central road, that goes up to San Mateo, in the direction of Tejeda.

All along the route are some concrete marker posts with the date of 1953 on them, some of which preserve their original white colour, which deserves an explanation. We go all the way back to 18th December 1953, the date of the signing of the decree that ordered a reforesting programme on the land that makes up Gran Canaria’s central summit. This document was signed by General Francisco Franco and the then Agricultural Minister Rafael Cavestany. The decree details the borders of the plots to be expropriated, the public usage and necessary occupation. The concrete posts were used to mark out the plots of land that were to be replanted with new pine trees.

“Díaz Bertrana” Mountain Refuge Under the nomenclature of GC RM 01, the Government of the Canary Islands has a nature equipment inventory of “Díaz Bertrana” mountain refuge, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which is publicly owned but is managed by the Canary Mountaineering Federation. It has a capacity for 52 people, and is named after one of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria’s presidents, Federico Díaz Bertrana, in the period from 1961 to 1970.
