WORSHIP
“Prayer, even before it is a request, even before it is an expression of gratitude, even before it is praise, is an encounter. Standing in the presence before the Shekhina, God’s indwelling presence. Therefore, the first step we take as we enter into prayer is the opening of consciousness to presence, to the sense that God is here, above me, in front of me, around me, inside of me.” —Rabbi Dov Singer

Selihot, prayers for forgiveness, are recited by Ashkenazi communities beginning on the Saturday night prior to Rosh Hashanah. Much like the sound of the shofar, the selihot prayers are a wakeup call, using powerful music to urge us to examine our ways ahead of the High Holidays.

Stacie Schapiro
FESTIVAL MORNING SERVICE Sun / Oct 4 / 9:45 am / 87th St and Online
F
or Stacie Schapiro, “there’s nothing more important than raising a Jewish family, Israel, and having a community. Park Avenue Synagogue brings that all together.” Since joining PAS with her husband, David, in the early 2000s, Stacie has dedicated her time, energy, and talents to forwarding the synagogue’s mission and building connections between congregants. As a child in New Jersey, Stacie watched her mom volunteer at her synagogue, her school, and with Women’s American ORT, a Jewish organization dedicated to education and job training. Her mother “instilled the importance of giving your time to meaningful causes that are important to your family,” a mantle that Stacie carries through her own volunteer work. At PAS, Stacie has co-chaired

the Gala and Kol Nidrei Appeal three times each, chaired multiple Gala subcommittees, co-chaired the search committees for Rabbis Koffman and Solmsen, and co-chaired the 2023 Women’s Trip to Portugal. Additionally, she has worked on Shabbat programming and planning, the communications committee, the membership task force, and the synagogue’s 2019 rededication event. As she notes with a laugh, “I joke that whoever calls me and asks me something, I just say, ‘Yes.’” Former board president Lizzy Markus calls Stacie “the consummate team player. If there was help needed, anywhere, she was consistently my first call. Needless to say, a second call wasn’t necessary.” To each of her volunteer endeavors at PAS, Stacie brings decades of professional experience. For more than 20 years, she worked in sports media, where she negotiated sponsorship deals for major clients. Today, she is a travel advisor at JW Travel Design, an affiliate of the luxury travel agency SmartFlyer. Both roles require an attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and “the ability to carry something through from start to finish,” as she notes, all of which inform her work at PAS. In addition to volunteering, Stacie has traveled with the synagogue on multiple occasions. In 2013, her family participated in the Young Family Israel Trip, where they made connections that continue to this day. “There are at least six families that are our closest friends now, who we really got to know in Israel,” says Stacie. Her family returned to Israel with the congregation in 2018, where they became even closer with Rabbi Cosgrove and Rabbi Zuckerman. In 2017, Stacie went on the Women’s Trip to Poland,
12

where she toured Auschwitz-Birkenau and learned about Polish-Jewish history. Stacie describes the visit as “one of the most impactful and meaningful trips that I’ve been on.” To Stacie, PAS’s emphasis on l’dor v’dor and community are key to the synagogue’s impact. “I think 90 percent of our friends are centered around Park Avenue Synagogue,” she says. “It will always be at the core of our family and our friends.” Her daughters, one a recent college graduate and the other a sophomore in college, attended Congregational School and had their Bat Mitzvahs at the synagogue. “And knowing that PAS gave them their backbone, their priorities, I saw that continue into college,” she says. "I think for PAS to continue believing in the lives of Jewish families is what’s really important, because that’s what continues the tradition from family to family to family.” Stacie, who excels at behind-the-scenes work, “literally was speechless” when she learned she was this year’s honoree. “It’s a huge honor, and I’m just beyond – I was taken aback. It’s something for my family to see that the hard work that you do put in does pay off.” Reflecting on her time at the synagogue, she says, “I think [PAS is] a leader in, for lack of a better word, the synagogue space. They are who everybody else aspires to be. Being a part of that and a part of the growth over the last decade has been super special for me, and I can’t wait to see what PAS does next.”
HATAN TORAH
Peter Bernstein
P
eter Bernstein grew up at Park Avenue Synagogue and has “lived and breathed the organization as a second home since 1985.” His family joined the congregation following a move from the West Side to the East Side of Manhattan when he was four years old, at which point he began attending Thursday morning minyan with his dad. He attended Congregational School and had his Bar Mitzvah at the synagogue. He and his now-wife, Jennifer, held their aufruf at the synagogue, and in December, his eldest son, Ben, celebrated his Bar Mitzvah at PAS. Peter’s childhood memories at PAS are many: eating apples and breadsticks in Congregational School, doing tefillah in the Appleman Chapel with members of the
WORSHIP / HOLIDAYS
community, going to Mexico with fellow students in eighth grade, reading Torah, and learning from Misha Avramoff z”l, the storied Jewish educator who worked at PAS’ Rabbi Judah Nadich Hebrew High School. The lessons he learned at the synagogue shaped his involvement with the community beyond its walls, especially in the volunteer work he did with Project Ezra, a nonprofit dedicated to lowincome Jewish elders on the Lower East Side. Over the decades, Peter’s relationship to the synagogue has “evolved naturally as someone who cares about the institution and wants to help it be the best it can be.” In 2022, he joined the Advisory Council, a position he held for three years. Since July of last year, he has been a member of the Board of Trustees. Between 2019 and 2021, he was co-chair of the Men’s Club with 2024 Simhat Torah honoree Larry Zakarin. When relaying how his involvement with the club began, Peter laughs before saying, “People joke that I have a hard time saying no. It’s one of my personality flaws.” He recalls how Larry, whom he describes as “a friend, an advisor, and a spiritual mentor at the synagogue,” gently coerced him into the position after pointing out that they make a good team. “I said, ‘Sounds great, sign me up.’” The duo introduced new events to the club, including a virtual scotch tasting during the pandemic and a poker tournament. Peter is the principal at Alexander Wolf & Son, a general contracting and constructionmanagement company founded 121 years ago by his great-grandfather. There, he works alongside his father, Daniel; their professional expertise informs Peter’s work at PAS, where,
as a member of the sanctuary committee, he is helping manage the renovation project. Peter is following in his father’s footsteps as a Simhat Torah honoree. “My father is my role model, the person I look up to the most on the planet, and knowing that he received this honor in 1999, it means a lot.” Peter describes how “we’re a very close-knit family, so ‘generation to generation’ is very important to us” – a principle that motivates and inspires his work on the PAS board. To him, “making sure that our kids learn the same way we did and are brought up in a similar way that we were brought up is the most important thing. It’s about the people and the education and the Jewishkeit.” Larry sums up his drive, calling Peter “the embodiment of a mensch – thoughtful, generous, deeply committed to family, community, and the Jewish people.” Peter’s dedication to PAS and his commitment to its future stem from his longstanding relationship with the synagogue and the significant role it has played throughout his life. Looking ahead, he hopes for PAS to remain “the premier conservative synagogue in the U.S.” and is committed to congregants’ learning and engagement, emphasizing the importance of prayer and knowledge in “keeping the community strong. I think of PAS as a home and a place where I feel very comfortable and happy and love to be.” Through his dedication, he is helping make PAS a second home for all congregants.
Did you know? Park Avenue Synagogue has 22 kosher Torah scrolls. Celebrate Simhat Torah at PAS and see if you can dance with each one of them!
