y best-ever motorcycling adventure was done eleven years ago, and I still love telling the story about my project to retrace the route of Cannon Ball Baker’s transcontinental record ride a century ago from San Diego to New York City. This included two rides actually, one with my friend and long-time Parts Magazine contributor Joe Colombero to confirm and document Baker’s route as close as we could. We then organized a group of about two dozen riders to join me on a ride we called “Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail Centennial Ride” held on that route exactly one hundred years to the day that Baker did it. The Adventure bike market was just getting popular in 2014 and the project gave us an opportunity to experience two top of the line ADV models at the time, a KTM 990 and Yamaha Super Tenere. We rode on a wide variety of offroad terrain and roadways, ranging from sand and loose dirt, paved streets through towns, two-lane roads, and even a few stretches of Interstate highways. The market for Adventure bikes had grown significantly in the years to follow, as seen in this issue with a special section dedicated to that segment of the market. Beginning on page 40, check out the many important ADV aftermarket products carried by Parts Unlimited.

Another must-see feature in this issue is our report from the LeMans Spring NVP Product Expo in Louisville, held in late-January. Be sure to have a look at the highlights from this ever-popular event, now held twice a year…once in Louisville, and again in the Fall in Milwaukee. This year, we’ll be there on September 6-7 and hope to see you.

Lastly, be sure to read our report in the News section as LeMans President Mike Collins says goodbye and heads into a well-deserved retirement. I’ll miss working with my old friend and wish him well as he finally takes some needed time with his family and personal projects that he will now have time to work on. ■

NEWS EVENTS Mike Collins Says Goodbye to LeMans OUTGOING PRESIDENT LOOKS BACK AT 32 YEARS OF SERVICE Story by Dennis Johnson Mike’s tenure was not without its challenges. The 2008 economic downturn tested the company’s purchasing acumen, while more than a decade later the Covid-19 pandemic presented a myriad of obstacles, including converting to a work-from-home protocol literally overnight. Another critical moment in recent history was a major cyber-attack that the company suffered in December 2021 which took careful navigating to make a successful recovery. There were also the challenges arising from the implementation of the company’s new Enterprise Resource Planning system, a necessary change to set LeMans up for the future, but a complex and arduous undertaking, nonetheless. And of course, there was the passing of LeMans Corporation founder Fred Fox in 2023, quite possibly the most impactful change for everyone to manage through. Throughout everything, the company persevered and emerged stronger. “I guess I’m most proud of what’s happened while I’ve been here. Not because I did it, but because I was part of the team that did it,” he says. “Whether it was when I was in purchasing or when I moved up to this position, it was all a team effort.”

I

t was late February and, with his retirement date on the near horizon, one might think that Mike Collins would take some time and coast a bit, being a short-timer and all. But not Collins, not as his 32-year career with LeMans Corporation came to a close. In his final few weeks since announcing his retirement as President of LeMans Corporation at the Louisville NVP, Collins said he was working harder than ever to get things done before he called it a day at the end of February. “Like I told everyone here when I said I’m retiring, ‘I’m still working. I’ll work right up to the last day,’” Mike says. In those final days, Mike took the time to talk with Parts Magazine about his long career at LeMans. “Yeah, I would have never guessed I’d be anywhere for 32 years when I was younger,” he says with a laugh. Over the course of three decades Mike was part of the team that helped establish the Moose Racing brand, acquired THOR, started sponsoring Supercross and helped evolve the off-road segment into a cornerstone of LeMans’ business. He was onboard for the creation and success of Parts Europe, “We did what everyone said we couldn’t do,” he recalls, and witnessed Parts Canada flourish.

PARTS MAGAZINE

Mike first joined LeMans in 1992 as an off-road buyer after working as general manager at Kawasaki of Riverside in Southern California, and as purchasing manager at Malcolm Smith Products. He went on to become Senior buyer at LeMans, then Deputy Director of Purchasing before being named Vice President of Purchasing. In 2017, Collins was named President and CEO of the LeMans Corporation. In reflecting on his long time with LeMans, Mike goes back to the first meeting he had with Fred Fox in 1992 about joining the company as one of the reasons he signed on at LeMans, and stayed. “Well, he was convincing, not just because of what he said, but the way we just hit it off,” he says. “It was obvious that we shared a lot of the same values, especially in how to do business and how to treat people.” It was that culture at LeMans – starting at the top with Fred and his late son Jeff Fox – that really appealed to Collins. Be fair. Be honest. Always tell the truth. Treat vendors and customers the way you want to be treated. You can be firm, but always communicate why. Basically, living by the Golden Rule. “And that goes back to why I stayed here so long. We’ve always had such a great team of people,” Mike says. “In the way they treated me and all the other employees and the people we get to work with.” continued on page 12...

Back in the early days at the company, he was part of what was then a small Purchasing Department, all of them enthusiasts, the perfect place for someone who loved all things powersports and wanted a career in the industry. “We’d go riding together and racing together and go for rides after work,” Mike says. “And it was … always work, but it’s like my wife would say, ‘Well, it’s not work to you. You have fun at work.’ I do. But there’s still a lot of work. It was just the perfect job.” Speaking of Mike’s wife, Lori, there’s a connection there directly related to LeMans – and Fred Fox. You see, shortly after joining LeMans, he was attending a get-together for sales reps at Fred’s house after an NVP watching some football. During the game, Parts Unlimited sales rep Sherry Honn who had been Mike’s rep at Kawasaki of Riverside, called him over to introduce him to a woman working as a bartender at the event. After the brief introduction, they hit it off, started dating and have now been married for 28 years and have four children. “So, I owe Fred a lot for that. Apparently, that’s something he always mentioned. He took responsibility for introducing us. It was actually Sherry who introduced us, but it was Fred’s event, so he got some of the credit too!” Mike says laughingly.

It’s with his wife Lori, and their family, that Mike plans to enjoy his retirement. What does retirement look like for the 74-year-old Collins? There are some household projects and maintenance he can finally take the time to tackle rather than cramming it into a weekend of work. He’ll also be able to spend some more time riding motorcycles – his main hobby. He and Lori also planned on heading down to Daytona Beach for Bike Week as regular civilians. “We want to go down and see the races and probably will still stop in and see some of the folks at Destination Daytona and things like that,” he says. “But we’re just going on our own and it’ll be for pleasure.”

Mike also predicts that he’ll still be doing some kind of work. Not straight away mind you, but after he gets his neglected to-do list taken care of and takes time to soak in the reality of retirement. “I want to stay in touch on a regular basis with the industry and the people I love, so we’ll see how that goes,” he explains. “I’ve worked my whole life. I’ve never been unemployed from about 16 years old and had paper routes before that. I’m not the cold turkey kind of guy, to just walk away from it. I just need to do a little less.” So, all of this leads to a question some folks might have for Mike, and that’s, “Why now?” Well, for that answer you have to go back a few years to the virtual meetings the company started during Covid. Collins had long considered retiring, but the time frame was always, “A couple years,” with no firm date in mind. With Covid, the cyber-attack, Fred’s passing, some big changes in management, and his commitment to the company, Collins had wanted to stay on to see things through. However, it was during those meetings where they discussed problems and solutions, successes and woes, that a more formal plan started to take shape. He started to see the true strength of the team that had been assembled over the years, and while there were still the ups and downs associated with any business – or life in general – there was a lot of positivity coming out of the meetings. So, knowing this, he made his official announcement. “I started thinking about it and go, ‘We’re in a really good place.’ Like I said, there’s always going to be things and problems we have to overcome and do, and that’s just part of the job,” he says. “I feel like the company is in a good place. It’s prepared and preparing even more for the future. We’ve overcome some huge challenges, and I see us overcoming some that are still in the process of working on, and we’ve got the team to do it. We’ve got a good team, a good leader in Paul Langley. He’s done a fantastic job and yeah, I see good things ahead for both me and the company.” ■ Parts Magazine congratulates Mike on his retirement!

2025 MOTOAMERICA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP HERRIN NABS FOURTH DAYTONA 200, AND THIRD IN A ROW WIN

Parts Unlimited/Ducati rider Josh Herrin celebrates his Daytona 200 three-peat win, and fourth overall, in Victory Lane along with Richie Escalante and Tyler Scott. Brian J. Nelson photo

J

osh Herrin and his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati crew were unflappable in winning the 83rd running of the Daytona 200. Herrin never put a wheel wrong, and the team gave him consistently fast and relatively stress-free pit stops and that all led to Herrin winning his fourth 200, while becoming the first racer in history to win three Daytona 200s in a row. It was the perfect start to the 2025 season for Herrin and Co. as he will begin defense of his 2024 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship brimming with confidence when the series kicks off at Barber Motorsports Park. The Parts Unlimited/Ducati rider had his hands full early in the race with a host of riders in the lead pack at Daytona International Speedway, but the three-time winner had his eyes glued on winning a fourth. The 57-lap race was red-flagged twice, bringing the pack back together on the restarts, but none could match Herrin when push came to shove. With just six laps to go, Herrin dropped the hammer and turned in the fastest lap of the race – a race-lap record of 1:47.879 – to drop the field, taking the win by 5.3 seconds. Second place went to Richie Escalante, with the Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki rider finally catching a break after his run of bad luck at Daytona. Escalante didn’t have the pace of Herrin when the latter decided it was time to go, but he was

better than the rest of the field and it resulted in his secondplace finish. Escalante’s teammate Tyler Scott, the pole sitter for the 83rd running of the historic race, was third and just .008 of a second behind Escalante. Isle of Man TT lap record holder Peter Hickman learned a lot in his first Daytona 200 a year ago and he used that knowledge to finish fourth on his PHR Performance Triumph. Two-time Daytona 200 winner Brandon Paasch rode his selffunded TOBC Racing Triumph to fifth, one spot better than his teammate – four-time Daytona 200 winner Danny Eslick. High schooler Matthew Chapin won his first and second career SC-Project Twins Cup races of his debut season in that class at Daytona, with the youngster coming out on top of two drafting duels to open the season with a pair of victories. Chapin and his RevZilla/Motul/Vance & Hines Suzuki GSX-8R could seemingly draft past the Robem Engineering Aprilia RS 660 of defending series champion Alessandro Di Mario and the Yamaha YZF-R7 of Giaccmoto Yamaha Racing’s Dominic Doyle at will, and he used it well to take victories in both races. The margins of victory over Di Mario on both days, .087 of a second in race one and an even closer .019 of a second in race two. ■

THE SEASON SO FAR 2 0 2 5

AMA MONSTER ENERGY SUPERCROSS “Meanwhile, out West, Cole Davies has been nothing short of phenomenal in his rookie year, while Haiden Deegan has been putting in the work to regain the dominance on the track that he is known for.” Shorter knows his racers and shares in the joy of our THOR riders’ victories and the heartache of their defeats. Here’s a look at their season so far. Let’s start with Aaron Plessinger #7, 450cc Supercross, Red Bull KTM: He had a rough start to his season due to an illness that cut into his training and testing and affected his performance in the opening rounds of the Supercross Series. However, now he’s healthy and riding in the front of the pack. He earned a podium at the Daytona Supercross and followed that up with another podium at the Triple Crown in round 10 of the series in Birmingham. With Plessinger currently in the

ell, here we are at the halfway point of a wild season. Coming into 2025, we were facing incredibly stacked classes in 450 and 250, both East and West divisions. There were so many bona-fide AMA champions on the gate at Anaheim 1 that it was hard to keep track. But, as the adage goes, this is why we race. While issues with setup or injuries have affected some riders, others are really hitting their stride at this point in the calendar. “In the 450 class, Aaron Plessinger has been ascending the ranks, back into familiar territory toward the front of the pack,” said THOR’s Global Brand Director Josh Shorter. “On the small-bore side, for our athletes on the Star Racing Yamaha and AEO KTM teams, it has been a season of highest-highs and lowest-lows. Seeing title contender Pierce Brown sidelined early was devastating for us all (get well soon, Pierce!), while watching Max Anstie take command of the East region was inspiring, until a broken leg put a halt to his championship charge.

top 10 in the points chase, he’s back to getting holeshots and leading for several laps, and we’re hoping to see him score another career 450cc Supercross victory this season. Haiden Deegan, 250 Supercross West #38/SMX #1/ MX #1 Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing: Deegan was ready to dominate the 250cc Supercross West but had to wait a couple of races to do so. He returned to the podium with a third at round two and then a victory at round three. He has scored two victories and three other podiums in the six 250cc Supercross West events run so far and has a firm grip on the red plate and the points lead for the Championship. Having won the 250cc SuperMotocross title in 2023-24, and the 250cc Pro Motocross title in 2024, the only title Deegan hasn’t won (yet) in the 250cc class is a 250cc Supercross regional title.

Max Anstie #31, 250 Supercross West, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing: Max Anstie won the opening round of the 250cc Supercross East and kept the red plate for several races. Now he’s unfortunately out for the rest of the series due to a broken leg. He may be able to return during the Outdoor Nationals or the SuperMotocross Playoffs, which he has already qualified for by virtue of his 250cc Supercross East victory at Tampa.

2025 SUPERCROSS SEASON UPDATE

Now well into his first professional season, THOR/Yamaha's Cole Davies' talent is on full display with a handful of great performances that has him at third in points for the 250 Supercross West as of press time. Andrea Wilson photo

Nate Thrasher #41, 250 Supercross East, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing: Thrasher had a slow start when the 250cc Supercross East began, but he is ready to go ‘all out’ now. He came back to form at the Birmingham Triple Crown with a 3-3-2 performance that garnered him the overall victory and moved him up to fifth in points at this time in the 250cc Supercross East. He’s got a way to go, but now that he’s rolling there is aways a shot. Cole Davies #100, 250 Supercross West, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing: Davies, a New Zealander, made his first professional start at Anaheim 1 on January 11, 2025, where he finished eighth. So far this season he’s successfully scored fast qualifier several times, won a couple of heat races, gotten two main event podiums and won two out of three races of a triple crown event. Davies currently sits third in points in the 250cc Supercross West. That’s very impressive for the talented teenager in his first professional season. ■

Conquer the Land

Gear to Equip the Overland Crew

THOR’s Range lineup of gear features fullseason versatility, providing comfort and protection for riders across a variety of terrains and climates.

THOR’s fanbase to produce apparel that could truly feature all-season versatility, and thus Range was born.” A standout feature of Range jackets and pants is that they’re engineered with Rheon technology. Rheon is described as an energyabsorbing super polymer, but in layman’s terms, it’s lightweight padding material that is capable of absorbing big impacts. Rheon pads are present in the shoulders, elbows and back of Range jackets, as well as in the knees and hips of Range pants. This takes the safety capabilities of Range gear to another level, meeting CE Level 1 and 2 strict safety standards (depending on which pad).

Range jacket and pants are constructed with robust Dura-Motion fabric, which tolerates abrasion and resists water without feeling stiff. They also feature plenty of pockets and venting.

O

verlanding is not just defined through Jeeps with 37-inch tires and roof tents, there’s a more intimate aspect that can only be achieved through the connection between man, machine and Earth’s terrain. Riders who seek another level of adventure can witness new places and rediscover old ones with two wheels and the right equipment on their backs. Fueling this mindset, THOR’s Overland collection – featuring Terrain and Range gear – is built for the search. Navigating a motorcycle through all types of Mother Nature’s terra firma is a task achieved many ways, but Range and Terrain gear is adaptable to them all, for adventurers, rally-racers and riders alike. When designing riding gear for adventures like these, the first layer of defense is most critical. It must be durable and tough, yet be able to move with and enable riders to perform their best and remain comfortable for miles – enter the Range and Terrain lines of pants and jackets. “During a trip to a consumer show in British Columbia, we noticed that there were thousands of motorcycles lined up in the parking lot – in January,” said Josh Shorter, THOR’s Global Brand Director. “We figured with that many dedicated riders just in one region, we owed it to

A standout feature of Range jackets and pants is that they’re engineered with Rheon technology. Rheon is lightweight, energyabsorbing padding that’s capable of taking big impacts.

THOR MX

The Terrain line from THOR shares many of the features and functions as the Range, and is perfect for weekend trips exploring new trails. Customers can opt to remove the zip-off sleeves on warmer rides.

One key style difference is that Terrain pants are available in both over-the-boot and in-the-boot configuration. Despite the different style, riders will find that each are made with the same durable material, rip-stop paneling in high-wear areas, high-volume pockets, water-resistant closures and adjustable cinches.

The list of battle-ready features extends well beyond Rheon technology. “Our Dura-Motion fabric is key for the Range pant and jacket, which is a material blend that tolerates abrasion and resists water without the ‘starchy’ feel of the more robust materials needed in high-wear areas,” said Shorter. “The strategic placement can really help to reduce fatigue for long days in the saddle.” Functionality also remains a high priority in the Range line, featuring precision adjustment straps on the pants and jacket and five different high-volume pockets between the two, allowing riders to carry the necessities and trail goods on every ride. Each piece also has a removable, quilted thermal liner and strategically placed intake and exhaust vents, making them adaptable to a wide range of temperatures. Range pants exclusively feature an over-the-boot design for maximized protection against the elements. The Range line is available in four timeless color options, including steel (blue), sand, army/orange and black. Considering Range is the most fully equipped adventure gear in THOR’s arsenal, think of Terrain as the lite version. Terrain shares much of the same base design, function and construction elements (sans Rheon padding), but the overall package is simplified to make them the perfect option for weekend trips exploring (or making) new trails.

Terrain jackets have a key element that stands out – versatility. Since Terrain is not intended to be an extreme-condition jacket, customers will love the ability to zip off the sleeves of their Terrain jackets and conveniently store them in a zippered compartment on the back of the jacket, perfect for when early morning chilly conditions make way to warmer temperatures. Assisting in the potential need for airflow are also strategically placed intake and exhaust vents that can be opened and closed to help dial in comfort. Terrain jackets’ versatility doesn’t end there. Reflective accents improve visibility at night and high-volume zippered pockets provide plenty of storage that will keep things out of the elements. Plus, when riders want to shed their jacket completely on the trail, the jacket itself converts easily into a belt for no-hassle stowing while riding. Summing up the difference between Range and Terrain, Shorter explained, “While Range is packed with more features like impact padding and thermal liners, Terrain is more purpose-built to take on the heavy abuse that motorcycle exploration can really dish out.” At the end of the day, THOR wants to empower and equip all riders to head out and conquer more of the incredible riding the world around us has to offer, and the Range and Terrain lines are designed to do just that. ■

Catching up with Perry King King is best known for his acting and directing work, with more than 100 credits to his name. Among his body of work are starring roles in The Possession of Joel Delaney and the 1980s TV series Riptide, and he both starred in and directed the critically acclaimed movie The Divide in 2018. The movie, a compassionate exploration of Alzheimer’s, earned a number of awards. While King’s entertainment career grew, so did his involvement in motorcycling. In addition to riding, he’s been on the AMA Board of Directors, and he emcees the annual AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. Lately, King has been logging miles on his 2012 Triumph Bonneville, which is equipped with a set of Avon TrekRider tires. He’ll roll out of his driveway in L.A. and wind up wherever the road – paved or not – leads. “I’ll hop on that bike, and I won’t know where I’m going. If I knew where I was going to go, I wouldn’t bother to go there,” says the 76-yearold King.

hen actor, director and motorcycle enthusiast Perry King recently stopped to chat about his latest adventures in motorcycling, he was in the middle of nowhere, New Mexico. Keeping track of King is no easy feat; between his home in Los Angeles, his cattle ranch in Northern California and a long list of motorcycles, there’s no telling where he’ll pop up next. Just don’t call his stable of motorcycles and sidecars a collection. “People who collect them keep them pristine and don’t ride them. Everything I have I use,” King is quick to note. In fact, he prefers a Suzuki DRZ 400 for herding his cows.

PARTS MAGAZINE

That “go anywhere” attitude is possible thanks to the Avon TrekRider tires on the Bonneville. King says, “I like that it looks just like a street bike, but with those tires, when I see a dirt road going off into the hills, I can take it. Those tires let me ride the way I grew up loving to ride – anything and everything. The type of riding I prefer is dual-sport or Adventure riding. You can go wherever you want to go.”

The Bonneville has a special place in King’s heart, since it once belonged to one of his best friends, Michael McGuire. “The last years of his life, he couldn’t ride anymore,” King says. “After he died and he left me this bike, I named it Michael. Now I can go in my garage and say, ‘Come on, Michael, let’s go for a ride.’” King calls the Avon TrekRider tires the most perfect 50/50 tires he’s ever tried. “When these Avons wear out on my Bonneville, I plan to put another set of them on right away. I can’t think of a greater compliment to give a set of tires than that,” says King. ■

Many RK Chain models began as a racing-specific chain which were only offered to professional teams. “RK’s latest chain models XRU, XRE and ZXW, all have developments that all began on the track but now are available to the public and have made their way to dealer showroom floors worldwide,” said Farrah Bauer, RK’s Marketing Manager.

ZXW SERIES CHAINS

The ZXW features MotoGP and FIM Suzuka 8 Hour racing technology and has proven its race superiority. RK’s ZXW series is ideal for both racing and general street use. The ZXW series chains are meant for high-speed, high-horsepower performance applications, large displacement and extended swingarm machines.

XRU PROFESSIONAL RACING CHAIN – TRACK USE ONLY

The XRU was designed for professional events such as MotoGP and Superbike racing to produce an ultimate racing chain. However, the XRU is also a versatile chain that can be used in other professional racing classifications. XRU chains feature exceptionally thin UW-Ring seals that reduce friction while maintaining optimal horsepower delivery from the start of the race to the end. The XRU is designed for track use only, and is not recommended for general street use. For general street use please refer to XRE or ZXW series chains.

RK’s XRE chains are designed not just for professional track and off-road racing, but also for general daily street/ off-road use. XRE series chains feature a 20 percent longer wearlife compared to previous RK model XSO series chains. XRE chains include XW-Sealing rings which provide two lubrication pools which help protect against high-speed abrasion and prevent dirt and debris from penetrating the inner rollers/bushings of the chain. XRE series chains are available in 520, 525 or 530 pitch. XW-Ring chains offer great high-speed, extreme heat performance and are designed for a variety of environments from the street to off-road. The rear SCORPION Trail III tire has dual-compound technology for that blend of durability and cornering grip, and both the front and rear tires incorporate silica for grip in all weather conditions. The multi-radius profile design is another nod to Pirelli’s SportTouring lineup, providing stability at high speeds while maintaining a sporty feeling. The Pirelli SCORPION Rally STR tire blends the performance of the SCORPION Rally competition tire with the durability and stability of an enduro street tire. This tire is so reliable on multiple surfaces that Ducati chose it as the OE tire for the Scrambler. Offroad, riders can count on traction and stability. On-road, this tire has excellent handling and grip in both dry and wet conditions.

The Trail III tire has the kind of features and performance one would expect from a Sport-Touring tire, but with the added benefit of off-road capabilities. Even when the bike is fully loaded, this tire provides predictable handling and stability.

A high silica content in the compound ensures grip in all conditions as well as higher mileage. Riders can set out knowing their Pirelli SCORPION Rally STR tires will get them to the end of the journey with ease. ■

aving the right gear for the ride can make all the difference in whether an outing is a fun one or not. Add in the different terrains, weather conditions and riding styles encountered in Dual-Sport riding, and it’s even more important to gear up properly before heading out. Moose Offroad’s newest line, Expedition Outerwear, is designed to tackle whatever a Dual-Sport or Adventure ride might bring, with plenty of versatility for on-the-go comfort. This new gear line from Moose Offroad includes a jacket, vest, pant and glove, allowing riders to choose the best combination of gear for their ride. It also features the adjustability riders need to take on changing weather conditions, temperature fluctuations or even riding preferences. “Adventure riders choose their bikes for their versatility,” says Moose Offroad’s Austin Weaver. “They excel at

Our Expedition line of gear allows you to mix and match pieces to suit whatever your adventure is that day.” And, since riding conditions can change even on something as short as a daily commute to work, the Expedition Outerwear line was designed with the varied elements in mind. Both the jacket and pant are made from a comfortable, durable fabric that resists both wind and water. On warmer riding days, it’s easy for a rider to set their ideal amount of airflow. The Expedition jacket features adjustable, zippered vents in the front, back and underarms. Even the pant helps keep things cool with zippered vents in the front and back.

The Expedition glove features a soft chassis that resists both wind and water, while the synthetic suede palm with a silicone grip provides durability as well as a firm grasp on the bars.

The team at Moose Offroad are riders themselves, which means they understand how important those small details can be. However, Weaver notes that they don’t start out with a list of must-have features. Rather, the process tends to be more intuitive – riders know what they want and need in gear, and that comes out during the design phase. “From concept to production, features reveal themselves after the general idea is set,” Weaver notes. “There is quite a bit of back-and-forth in development. After the initial concept drawings, all the details and design get fleshed out.” One of those details is focused on making the Expedition gear tough enough for any dual-sport or Adventure ride. The chassis of both the jacket and pant feature additional panels of tough ripstop material in high-wear areas, like the elbows and inner knees. The vest is constructed from that same ripstop material, with stretch panels on the side to ensure a comfortable fit while still keeping critical areas well covered. When it comes to storage space, the Expedition jacket has two hand-warmer pockets as well as two interior pockets for small items. The back of the jacket features a roomy lumbar pocket that can stow anything from a pair of gloves to a hydration pack. The pant has two cargo pockets for even more stowage options. The Expedition vest is especially suited to taking things along on the ride, featuring two cargo pockets, two hand-warmer pockets, two chest pockets and a lumbar pocket. The versatility of the Expedition pant includes the option to have a tucked-in look with boots. The outer layer of the legs zip off below the knee, but the pant liner stays in place, so it can be tucked into boots for full coverage. This makes it convenient for riders to get their preferred look, whether that’s over the boot or tucked in.

On Demand

Next Generation Adventure and Hypersport Tires Continental is relaunching an updated TKC 80 tire on its 40th anniversary after big demand from Adventure riders and dealers alike. The venerable tire now features a new manufacturing process, new materials, more stability and improved wet grip.

T

he two latest tires from Continental feature improved performance and durability over their predecessors. The ContiAttack SM2 is a hypersport tire ideal for lightweight sportbikes, while the TKC 80 is an updated Adventure tire that riders have been demanding. The ContiAttack SM2 is a road-legal supermoto tire. The aggressive hypersport design and flexible carcass mean lap times are faster than its predecessor, the ContiAttack SM EVO, but the mileage has been improved by up to 28 percent, too. This best-of-both-worlds tire features a host of Continental technology, like Black Chili, MultiGrip and Traction Skin. Black Chili is a full-silica compound that improves grip in both wet and cold conditions, and it’s capable of handling the mixed terrain found in supermoto racing. “Black Chili is a top-shelf compound that evolves with time, and in this case, it’s a super sticky and flexible compound with maximum grip,” notes Continental Head of Sales – Americas Daniel Solorzano. MultiGrip is a single compound with two different performance aspects, offering durability in the center and excellent grip in the shoulders. Traction Skin virtually eliminates the need for a breaking-in period thanks to a new mold-coating technology. The ContiAttack SM2 also has more flex, which improves performance and the tire’s ability to come up to temperature quickly, which can sometimes be a challenge on smaller-displacement sportbikes. During the launch of the tire, riders on smaller bikes, like the Ninja 400, raved about the tire’s performance capabilities. “It’s remarkable that we’re adding rubber but making it 140g lighter than the previous tire,” says Solorzano. “With two fingers, you can bend the tire. That’s what makes it work so well.”

Adventure riders are excited about the updated TKC 80 tire, which is relaunching on its 40th anniversary after big demand from riders and dealers alike. The venerable tire now features a new manufacturing process, new materials, more stability and improved wet grip. In the looks department, the TKC 80 is much the same as it always has been. A light redesign of the sidewall is the only visual difference. The tread pattern that Adventure riders love so much is unchanged. A new mixing process for the compound has resulted in a tire that performs better than ever, especially in the wet. On Continental’s test track, the TKC 80 set a wet lap time that was 3.8 seconds faster than the previous iteration of the tire. Ideal for cross-country rides on dirt and technical riding, the TKC 80 is designed to give riders confidence on a range of bikes, including the largest Adventure models. Many riders pair a TKC 80 front with a TKC 70 Rocks rear tire for confidence-inspiring performance combined with longer mileage. Continental Tires reports that every Continental tire comes with three years of roadside assistance for flat tires and Emergency Trip Interruption coverage, which covers hotel, food and other expenses encountered if a bike breaks down. Restrictions and limitations apply. ■

Light and Powerful Titanium for BMW Twins

Akrapovič’s titanium Slip-On Line muffler for the BMW R1300GS and R1300GS Adventure is lightweight and provides a healthy increase in horsepower, torque and style.

hen you own your own titanium foundry and tube mill, you use the lightweight, lustrous metal to make anything and everything you please. Exhaust systems? Of course. Protection bars? Most manufacturers use stainless steel, but why not Ti? Showcasing Akrapovič’s mastery of the element with atomic number 22 are a pair of products for BMW’s new R1300GS and R1300GS Adventure – the gorgeous Slip-On Line muffler and impressive Protection Bar Set. If your G1300GS and Adventure customers want to unleash the bark of their bigger, better boxer-twin engines, Akrapovič’s *(EMIS Code 3) Slip-On Line muffler is ready to satisfy. Akrapovič has decades of experience working with BMW’s boxers, and it shows. This titanium double-flow muffler adds nearly 2 horsepower and over 3 foot-pounds of torque, all while shedding a half pound of weight and remaining EC/ECE compliant for street use. Power gains and weight loss are nice, but it’s the sound and style that seal the deal. The nasally bark of a boxertwin is instantly recognizable, and when it’s coming from a muffler like Akrapovič’s, it gains a distinctly deep snarl. Opening the throttle becomes that much more enjoyable when it’s accompanied by such a thrilling sound, and the aesthetics speak for themselves. In gleaming titanium or all black, this is a beautiful component that puts expert craftsmanship on full display. In a defiant show of force, Akrapovič fed titanium tube stock from its expansive inventory through the mandrel bender to sculpt the Protection Bar Set. Developed to

shield the boxer’s cylinders, these Protection Bars bolt to the chassis with burly laser-cut and machined 10mm flanges for superior strength in the event of a tip over. The Bars integrate with the bike’s engine and fit so closely that they don’t impact cornering clearance. For style and serviceability, 2.5mm carbon fiber panels serve as sacrificial contact points. The 25mm titanium tubing is sandblasted to a distinct finish that helps hide scratches, and the underlying metal is inherently corrosion resistant. Compared to the stainless steel commonly used for this application, titanium is about 40 percent lighter, so this complete Protection Bar set weighs just 6.6 pounds. That makes it one of the lightest options on the market for the BMW R1300GS and R1300GS Adventure. When you specialize in titanium to the extent that you have your own foundry, it makes sense that the semi-precious metal would be prominent in your product lineup. ■

The Terra Force-R is offered in several 19-inch and 21-inch options for the front and 17-inch and 18-inch sizes for the rear.

The Mitas Terra Force-R tires are designed for 90 percent on-road and 10 percent off-road use and a great choice for customers on big Adventure bikes. Their construction helps support heavier bikes and prolongs performance, so your customers get optimal handling throughout the tire’s life.

An oil change and perhaps new tires are on the agenda, and when it comes to fresh rubber, there are a lot of options. Choosing the right tire really depends on the motorcycle and how that bike will be ridden. For full-size Adventure bikes that will see a lot of pavement miles, the Terra Force-R from Mitas is an excellent option. Mitas classifies the Terra Force-R as a 90 percent onroad, 10 percent off-road tire designed for all-around performance and confidence on paved and gravel roads. More specifically, this tire was engineered with full-size

Since road use is the Terra Force-R’s focus, the profile has a consistent radius to promote responsive and predictable handling, while the tread pattern leans toward maximizing road contact. A MCTT (Multi Compound Tread Technology) tread cap uses different rubber formulas for different bands of the tire to balance grip and wear. The central tread is harder for increased mileage, while the shoulders are a softer compound for excellent grip while leaned over. Silica is employed throughout the tread cap, promoting wet- and cold-weather traction.

To promote grip on looser surfaces like gravel or hard-packed dirt roads, Mitas carved deep, wide grooves that stretch from shoulder to shoulder. A closer look shows that those broad tread grooves are tapered and have angled walls. The 3-D design, developed with finite element analysis, helps manage tread-block movement for quick warmup and even wear. From high-speed highway sprints to winding mountain roads and even gravel tracks, the Terra Force-R is designed to provide stability, responsiveness, and durability for your customers’ Adventure bikes. ■

An Airbag System for Off-Road Riders

When deployed, the Tech-Air Off-Road provides airbag coverage for the entire chest and back, as well as the shoulders, neck and collarbones. The airbag when deployed exceeds CE Level 1 passive armor standards, providing up to seven times the amount of protection. Plus, the jacket that houses the system includes armor in the chest, back, shoulders and elbows.

The Tech-Air Off-Road was developed specifically for off-road riding, providing protection over varying terrain and conditions. It features three riding modes – Enduro, Rally and Street.

“It’s truly incredible what Alpinestars has been able to accomplish with motorcycle airbag technology,” says Brent Jaswinski, Alpinestars Sales Communications Manager. “Simply knowing the precise difference or moment for when it needs to deploy and when it doesn’t is impressive on paved surfaces. Factor in the dynamics of off-road terrain, and the technology’s sophistication is mind-blowing.”

E

very rider on the podium at the 2024 Dakar rally was wearing the Alpinestars Tech-Air Off-Road. The three riders were among the 107 at the rally who were using the airbag system, which was specifically designed to accommodate the needs of offroad riders and racers.

The Tech-Air Off-Road’s two built-in gas inflators allow two individual airbag deployments before it’s necessary to replace the gas canisters. That means a rider can get up and continue riding after a deployment, knowing there’s still another deployment at the ready.

The Tech-Air Off-Road was developed to have precise crash detection algorithms, with the on-board accelerometers and gyroscopes sending information to the system’s computer a thousand times each second. Off-road riding can be a challenge, since the equipment has to factor in the bumps and varying terrain. Alpinestars has solved that by including three riding modes – Enduro, Rally and Street. Whether it’s for a longdistance rally, Adventure/Dual-Sport or enduro riding, the Tech-Air Off-Road has a mode for it. Each mode has a specific algorithm for that style of riding. Enduro mode is ideal for trail riding at low and medium speeds as well as riding over unpaved surfaces such as gravel and riverbeds. For riders who are going faster off-road, the Rally mode can handle all types of terrain and higher speeds. This mode is great for open off-road riding, like desert and countryside settings, and it’s the choice for competition use. Street mode is optimized for riding on paved surfaces. Switching between modes is easy, and can be done via an LED display on the front of the system or the Tech-Air app. That makes it a simple change for riders who are going from the street to the trail.

AIRBAG SYSTEMS

Standing Guard on All Terrains

Turning the system off and on is just a matter of zipping or unzipping it. To make it even more useful to off-road riders, the two gas inflators built into the system allow two individual airbag deployments before it’s necessary to replace the gas canisters. That means a rider can get up and continue riding after a deployment, knowing there’s still another deployment at the ready. The Tech-Air app connects via Bluetooth. Software updates, battery status, a ride tracker map and more are all available through the app. There shouldn’t be a need to worry about the battery life, though, since a full charge provides about 30 hours of active riding time. ■

Practical, Versatile Luggage The Right Tool for Adventure-Touring

B

efore a rider can consider what they’re going to pack for an Adventure-Touring excursion, they have to decide what luggage to put everything in. SW- MOTECH’s expansive range of luggage allows riders to design the setup that will suit them best. “SW-MOTECH offers a variety of luggage options, and we are firm believers of ‘the right tool for the job,’” says SW-MOTECH Marketing Manager Derrick Lau. “Whether you’re going on just a day ride and need minimal luggage capacity or you’re going on a multi-day trip and are in need of significant luggage capacity, the right tool will help riders focus on the root of what’s most important, and that’s the ride.” SW-MOTECH’s PRO carrier system, including the PRO tank ring, are extremely popular thanks to the system’s ease of use. It’s simple to attach this luggage-mounting system to the bike, and the luggage that coordinates with it can be mounted and removed in seconds. The PRO tank ring is a perfect example of this convenience. The ring mounts via the stock bolt holes on the gas tank, and an item like the PRO Micro tank bag mounts with a simple click. The bag remains in place and won’t slide around while riding, but when it’s time for removal, a simple pull-tab system releases the bag. The popular PRO Micro tank bag has 3 liters of storage, or 5 liters when expanded. A magnetic guide in the PRO tank ring makes it even easier to attach, and a guide rail allows it to be adjusted so it sits at just the right spot on the tank for maximum convenience and comfort. The durable, UV-resistant ballistic nylon has a water-resistant interior coating, and a MOLLE attachment makes it easy to add a smartphone or tablet holder. For riders who expect to encounter rain, there is also a waterproof version of the bag. SW- MOTECH’s DUSC and TRAX ADV luggage systems also work with the PRO carrier system via adapters, and these options further the choices a rider has in their luggage setup.

Braking Products for BMW’s ADV Machines

A

dventure has taken on a new meaning with the evolution of ADV motorcycles. Riders are tackling longer trips in trickier locations and OEMs are answering their needs with new technology like automated shift assistance and adjustable ride height. BMW’s latest ADV installation, the R1300 GS and R1300 GS Adventure, are textbook examples of this evolution. Yet, regardless of technology, parts still wear out. That’s where outfits like EBC step in, offering brake pads and rotors engineered to maximize braking performance, longevity and consistency – something riders shouldn’t be willing to sacrifice when tackling uncharted terrain on their motorcycles. Brake pads are a peculiar technology that require extensive experience and know-how to make correctly, let alone make better. EBC isn’t lacking in either department and that’s evident with its FA-HH series pads. These maximize stopping power and feature an ultra-high friction, full-sintered compound that can really benefit larger Adventure machines like the BMW and its added weight, especially when loaded up for a long journey.

EBC’s brake pads and rotors are designed to maximize stopping power and offer long-lasting performance for big Adventure bikes like the BMW R1300 GS.

“BMW riders can pair FA-HH upgraded pads with EBC rotors to maximize longevity and overall braking performance,” said EBC’s Josh Russell. For front rotors, they have the choice of a floating design for maximized heat dissipation and consistency in a lightweight package or a solid design for a great balance of durability, performance and value, available for the rear as well. ■

Everything Illuminated

Multi-Function Lighting for Off-Road Adventures The DURA PRO series from Vision X features multi-function driving that pump out a minimum of 1,375 feet of useable light from each pod, with two, four, six and nine LED versions available.

Vision X’s CR PRO Series features seven 14-watt LEDs and the company’s proprietary Total Internal Reflection optics – for more precise light control – to deliver extra bright lighting. These kits produce a whopping 23,000 lumens per pair from a tiny 4½-inch housing.

V

ision X continues to deliver exciting lighting products for powersports enthusiasts to enjoy nighttime off-road adventures with more and better visual clarity and safety. The brand’s CR PRO Dual-Action and DURA PRO Multi-Function Light Kit lines are designed to deliver increased light output, multifunctionality, and customizable beam shapes and colors, all wrapped in a durable and attractive, compact housing. Vision X’s CR PRO Series combines increased light output and dual functionality with on-the-fly beam shape and daytime running lights color change capabilities. More specifically, the CR-7 PRO Light Kit utilizes seven 14-watt LEDs and Vision X’s proprietary Total Internal Reflection (TIR) optics – for more precise light control – to deliver extra bright lighting. These kits produce some serious bang for the buck, cranking out a whopping 23,000 lumens per pair from a tiny 4½-inch housing. Each CR-7 PRO includes a modular snap-on X-Lens, which enables on-the-fly customizable beam shape adjustments and interchangeable white, amber, and yellow color outputs. Dual functionality allows you to control the middle row of optics independently as a DRL or “Glow Mode” that can change color by utilizing the X-Lens. Dual-Beam Technology adds even more flexibility, allowing users to choose between a long-distance spot beam or a very common combo driving beam pattern. with a thick spot beam highlighting longer distances and a wide elliptical flood beam illuminating the surrounding area up to 240 feet. Vision X more recently added the DURA PRO Series to its lighting lineup. These new multi-function driving lights re-purpose the elliptical flood optics to double as DRLs. These kits pump out a minimum of 1,375 feet of useable light from each pod, with two, four, six and nine LED versions available. Light outputs range from 3,400 Raw Lumens for the DURA PRO 2 kit to 15,300 Raw Lumens for the DURA PRO 9 with nine LEDs per pod. The small footprint and versatility of the DURA PRO Series make them ideal as front bumper lights, reverse lights, trailer cargo lights, pillar/ditch lights, and just about any other scenario one can dream up. With only four SKUs covering a range of applications and use cases, the DURA PRO Series is a practical lighting solution with a marginal commitment from dealers. “Our lights were built and tested in the toughest offroad races to have proven durability and performance,” explains Brandon Nelson, Marketing Manager for Vision X. “Now, with the LeMans Group, we’re streamlining access for dealers, ensuring off-road enthusiasts everywhere get the lighting they need to conquer any terrain.” ■

UTV Wheels and a Tire Gauge

T

he wheels and tires on a UTV put in a lot of hard work, which means upgrading those components can make a big difference in how well a vehicle performs. Whether it’s out riding for fun or getting things accomplished, the right wheels and tires are a must. Moose Offroad has a range of UTV wheels that are durable, performance-minded and goodlooking, including the 346X beadlock wheels. And, to make sure the tires mounted to this latest wheel offering from Moose Offroad are performing at their best, too, there is also a tire inflator gauge that easily stows for on-the-go pressure adjustments.

The wheels are just one part of getting a vehicle down the road, and Moose Offroad makes it easy to keep tires performing at an optimal level with the tire inflator gauge. Compact but easy to use, this gauge accurately measures and inflates tires up to 200psi. The quick-connect coupler and interchangeable side chuck make the gauge convenient to use, and the backlit digital display is easy to read at a glance. Even at night, reading the tire pressure is no problem. The tire inflator gauge is small enough to carry on board, so it’s at the ready whenever pressure adjustments are necessary. ■

Going for the Gold

Subtle, But Bold Riding Gear

E

ven monochrome motorcycle gear can make a statement. That’s evident in some of the latest items from ICON, including the women’s Tuscadero 3 jacket and the Domain Cornelius helmet. These no-frills designs don’t have any wild graphics, but they’re still going to turn heads. The Tuscadero 3 jacket is a straightforward option available in either white or black Ax Laredo. This synthetic material has all the looks of leather, but it has a higher tear strength than leather of the same thickness while weighing a lot less. The contrast gold stitching and exposed gold zipper add a subtle pop of color.

The Tuscadero 3 jacket and Domain Cornelius helmet from ICON really pack a one-two punch in terms of style and protection.

The jacket has ICON’s Sport Fit, including pre-curved arms, which means it stays comfortable even while in an aggressive riding stance. Waist adjusters and zippered wrists allow for precise fitment, and the tall Mandarin collar helps keep the wind at bay. There are D3O Ghost impact protectors in the shoulders and elbows of the Tuscadero 3. This revolutionary armor is light, low-profile and flexible, providing maximum coverage without sacrificing comfort. The Tuscadero 3 also has a D3O Viper back impact protector for another layer of defense against the world. “ICON has been steadily building our women’s line with products designed and sized for us lady riders,” notes ICON Brand Manager Kat Foster. “We’re proud of the comfort

and protection available in a package that is comfortable and flattering!” Like the Tuscadero 3 jacket, the Domain Cornelius helmet ditches graphics in favor of a single-color look. Since that color is gold, though, it makes the helmet impossible to miss. The color-matched OTT Spoiler and zero-distortion, fog-free Domain Shield complete the monochrome construction. All that gold sits on top of a hand-crafted FRP shell, which balances maximum integrity with minimal weight. There are plenty of vents, including large intake vents on the front, to allow an ample amount of airflow. Inside, a Hydradry liner helps wick moisture away from the rider’s

One of the most notable features of the Domain helmet is its compatibility with the HelmLink Bluetooth communication system, which is available separately. This system allows up to 20 riders to connect at once, and because the Domain was built to accommodate HelmLink, the system seamlessly integrates with the helmet for a clean look. ■

ff-road riders rip through consumables like air filters, chains and tires. The biteMX FROM AMS is a do-it-all off-road tire that delivers exceptional performance. Now your customers can get the tire in 16 different sizes at a new, lower price.

On top of that sophisticated foundation is an aggressive tread structure molded from a natural-rubber compound. AMS’s rubber formula is long-wearing, yet still provides strong, consistent traction in the wet and dry. A semi-wide tread layout bites into the trail when the surface is soft and loose, and careful block placement promotes strong self-cleaning when the riding gets muddy. Along the shoulder of the biteMX, tread spacing is reduced to provide enhanced support for consistent feedback and traction when the tires are loaded up while cornering. From the inside out, the biteMX features materials, technologies, and design aspects intended to make it the go-to tire for your off-road customers. AMS offers the biteMX in a wide range of sizes to fit anything your clients have, from minibikes to open-class racers. The biteMX has always been an easy go-to thanks to its blend of performance and price, and now it’s an even better value thanks to lower pricing. Off-road riding takes a toll on consumables, and you can help your customers keep their costs down by pointing them toward the biteMX, which is more affordable than ever. ■

A

t less than three months into the year, the 2025 off-road racing season is just getting started for the Moose Offroad riders, and it has already given us surprising results, historic moments and remarkable comebacks. The Grand National Cross Country Series started with an unprecedented event at the opening round at the Big Buck GNCC in South Carolina when the overall podium was filled by all XC2 250 Pro riders. Moose Offroad athlete Gus Riordan of the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Landers explained how a trio of second-row starters bested the entire XC1 Pro line. “When we start from behind, because the XC1 class is laying all the lines, it’s like when you’re cycling, you’re hopping behind someone and you get pulled along,” said Riordan. “Those guys are doing the hard yards and we’re just learning from watching. It’s a lot less work.” Riordan’s Landers Moose Offroad/KTM teammate and fellow XC2 250 Pro competitor Grant Davis has also enjoyed some time on the GNCC overall podium, carding second at round three at the inaugural Talladega GNCC. Davis grabbed a second overall and another XC2 victory. Remarkably, it puts

Davis into the lead for not only the XC2 250 Pro class, but also for the overall GNCC Championship after three rounds. The return of Kailub Russell to the GNCC scene is also a highlight of the fresh season. The Moose Offroad athlete has already put his AmPro Yamaha on the overall podium, collecting second overall at the Wild Boar GNCC, his second race back after a four-year hiatus. The U.S. Sprint Enduro Series also saw an exciting early season when Moose Offroad/AmPro Yamaha’s Liam Draper took the overall win at round two in South Carolina, ending Johnny Girroir’s 22-race win streak. It was only a matter of time before Draper made it happen, the Moose star came on strong at the opening round with a second-overall finish and finally landed in the middle of the podium two weeks later, if only by a split second. “That last enduro test, I did the best I could and laid it all out there,” said Draper. “I was going to die trying to beat Johnny. It was some of the closest racing I think I’ve ever had. We went into the last test 0.7 of a second apart, so super close, and then he got it back from me. I just rode the last test the best I could and laid it all out there.”

Back and in action. Moose Offroad/ Honda’s Tayla Jones returned to racing this season after taking all of last year off with an injury. She’s put in an impressive performance thus far, including a win at round three of the Sprint Enduro series.

Fellow Moose Offroad-backed racer Davis is also coming on strong in the U.S. Sprint Enduro Series, with a Pro 2-class win streak at all three rounds thus far. Davis helped himself to third overall at round two. Moose Offroad’s Cody Barnes of the Phoenix Racing Honda squad has his Sprint Enduro season off to a good start, as well, with a podium at the opener in third, and a second-place finish at the most recent round three in Georgia. Draper, Barnes and Davis are all wellplaced in the top-four for the overall championship. In the West, the National Grand Prix Championship Series is underway, along with the World Off Road Championship Series, and in both championships, Moose Offroad athletes are charging ahead. Mason Semmens of the FMF RPM KTM Racing Team is laying down a scorcher in the WORCS Pro 250 division with a solid win streak in the first three rounds. The Moose rider is also defending his Pro II title in NGPC, where he has begun a win streak following a runnerup finish at the opener. At the WORCS opening round, Semmens’ FMF RPM KTM teammate and Moose Offroad’s Noah Gordon made it a team 1-2, carding second in Pro 250. Gordon is finding his stride with a string of consistent top-five finishes.

The women of Moose Offroad are also out to a dominant start. Tayla Jones of the Phoenix Racing Honda team showed the true definition of a phoenix, rising to an impressive return to racing after taking all of last year off with an injury. Jones began the Sprint Enduro series with two third-place finishes, and nabbed the win at round three. Moose Offroad-backed Rachel Gutish has been on a number of different bike brands so far in 2025, but it didn’t stop her from taking the wins at both the National Enduro and Sprint Enduro opening rounds. In the National Hare and Hound Championship, Rachel Stout of the FMF RPM KTM team has her title defense off to a healthy start, and is also leading the way in the West Hare Scrambles Series. Brandy Richards of the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Landers is also lighting a new path in the East, the Moose Offroad-backed athlete already with a GNCC WXC win and a Sprint Enduro Pro Women win. ■

For Hart, one of the fun challenges of the ’25 Chieftain build was the chance to fabricate some parts for it, including an adapter to accommodate the ODI Hart Luck Signature handlebars. While this was Hart’s first time working with the new Chieftain, it’s far from his first Indian build. His exclusive partnership with the brand means he builds two to three Indians every year. And, each time, he knows exactly where to start. “The Indian Catalog is my go-to,” Hart notes. “I’m starting a Sport Chief build right now, and the first thing I do is grab the Indian book and start looking for parts.” For Hart, who’s been a (Parts Unlimited sister company) Drag Specialties Brand Ambassador and has plenty of experience working with LeMans, it’s not just about the availability of parts but also the speed of delivery. “In this industry, sometimes there’s a long lag,” he says. “The great thing about Drag is you order, and it’s on your doorstep in 2-5 days. Plus, the catalogs have every part you could possibly need.”

CAREY HART’S 2025 INDIAN CHIEFTAIN

E

very time Carey Hart starts planning a new custom Indian build, he heads straight for the Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties Indian catalog. This time around, the motocross and Freestyle legend and custom builder got his hands on one of the first 2025 Indian Chieftains to roll off the line. After 400 hours of work, the bike is a sleek Performance Bagger with Hart’s signature style.

While there are a lot of options in the Indian catalog, Hart admits he’s a creature of habit, turning to the same proven brands again and again to provide the right look for his builds. Klock Werks windscreens, Dunlop tires and Drag Specialties/ Parts Unlimited items are usually on the list of parts for any of Hart’s builds. “Every Bagger I have has a Klock Werks windshield,” Hart says. “The quality and fitment are great. I tend to trim them down.” That’s the case with the ’25 Chieftain, which has a trimmed windscreen to add to the sleek, racing-inspired look. As for the tires, this bike features a set of Dunlop American Elites, giving the right blend of classic V-Twin styling and performance capability. Hart has been riding V-Twins for 30 years, after purchasing one with money he earned as his motocross career was taking off. After transitioning to building as well as riding V-Twins, Hart

With an action sports background like Hart’s it’s no wonder all of his customs are designed and built to perform. That Chieftain cuts a sporty profile.

is ready to offer advice for riders who want their own Performance Bagger.

and proof that this Performance Bagger has the heart of a motocross race bike.

“For me, typically, I always tell people to get comfortable,” he says. “Start with the seat, handlebar and exhaust. It sounds fast, and you’re in a position to ride aggressively. From there, I always tell people chassis before engine. Do the brakes first, and the suspension second. Then get into the motor, and then get into the aesthetics, lighting packages, paint, swingarms and all that stuff.”

“The handlebars are motocross bend,” Hart points out. “It’s the exact same bend I run on my MX bike. The grip is an MX waffle. I’m not reinventing the wheel: we just apply MX style to the V-Twin bars.”

Dialing in the chassis and brakes might sound counter-intuitive to someone new to the scene, but there’s no point in having a built motor if the bike itself is unequipped to handle the horsepower. For the brakes on the Chieftain, Hart replaced the stock rotors with a set of Galfer WAVE rotors. These performance-minded rotors are able to provide excellent stopping power while adding a bit of style to the braking setup, too. In addition to the ODI Hart Luck Signature handlebars, the grips are also Hart’s signature line from ODI. They’re one of the most obvious motocross cues in the Chieftain build,

78

PARTS MAGAZINE

Another motocross-inspired part on the Chieftain is the Saddlemen Hart Luck Signature seat. The solo seat design gives Hart a motocross-style stance that lets him feel right at home. He says, “My three points of touch are butt, feet and hands. I like my feet under me and my hands in front of me. So, everything applies back to my MX background.” Hart worked with Saddlemen to design the seat back in 2015, and it’s become his standard seat on V-Twin builds. “I love that seat. It’s an aggressive, timeless seat,” Hart notes. Plus, the process of designing it was a lot of fun. “I don’t do that passenger thing; my wife rides her own motorcycle. So, I told [Saddlemen] I want something that looks fast standing still. We played around with different foam and padding and came up with this seat.”

Hart’s Chieftain features a set of his own ODI Hart Luck Signature grips and handlebars.

Other parts on the Chieftain that Hart found in the Indian catalog include a Barnett clutch cable to ensure flawless performance when shifting. And, after dialing in the motor with a Dynojet, the power gets delivered to the rear wheel with a DID chain. An easy but significant upgrade, DID chains ensure long life and reduced flex for smooth power delivery. The custom paint by Airtrix pulls everything together, cementing the racing-inspired look of the Chieftain. The rise of the Performance Bagger scene has coincided with Hart’s rise as a bike builder. He says, “It’s been really fun. Truthfully, for me, it’s good timing. When I started doing this 10 years ago, it was just a hobby. I was doing MX influences on my V-Twin bike; stance, suspension, brakes and so on. It was right about that time this performance trend was bubbling up.” The timing wasn’t just good for Hart. He’s quick to point out that the performance potential has given Baggers a much-needed boost in visibility and desirability. “It’s taken the stigma away from the Bagger as an ‘old man’ bike.

Hart always counts on Saddlemen seats to keep him comfortable and in full command.

CAREY HART’S 2025 INDIAN CHIEFTAIN

The Chieftain features a set of Dunlop American Elites, giving the right blend of classic styling and performance capability.

It’s given it a shot of adrenaline because younger riders can hop them up, do suspension and motor and brake upgrades, and they don’t feel like they’re riding their dad’s bike,” Hart says. And for any riders looking for inspiration, they’ll be able to see Hart’s custom 2025 Indian Chieftain at the One Show, following its debut at Daytona Bike Week and the Handbuilt Show. Hart will get the bike back in May, and he’ll be riding it to Sturgis this summer. In all, he expects to put about 25,000 miles on the bike this year alone. And when he’s not riding, you can likely find Hart working on his next build, including flipping through the pages of the Indian Catalog. Hart says, “I’ve worked with Parts Unlimited on the MX side for about 30 years, and getting to jump the fence and work with Drag Specialties on the V-Twin side just feels like home.”

Exploring the Maintenance-Free HPE Chain Line

O

ne of the more oft-overlooked aspects of motorcycle performance is its drive chain, which transfers power from the engine to the sprockets and then to the rear wheel/tire. Being such a critical component, a premium chain like those made by the Italian brand Regina Chain is vital for optimal drive system performance and longevity. Founded in northern Italy in 1919 as a manufacturer of chains and freewheels for bicycles, Regina Chain began manufacturing motorcycle chains in 1939. The brand still makes 100 percent of its chains in Italy. Regina has chosen to keep its manufacturing processes in Italy, ensuring each chain meets its strict quality and performance standards. As a result, Regina has become a trusted supplier to top OEMs like Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Honda, the KTM group, and Yamaha. Regina’s commitment to quality is backed by hundreds of world championship titles. As the “Chain of Champions,” Regina supports race teams and motorcycle racing in all forms to increase brand awareness and showcase the proven performance of its products. The company uses the real-world testing inherent in racing to develop and test new features and technologies. In 2024 alone, Regina Chain won seven world championships, including WSBK, MotoGP, Moto2, and Supermoto road titles, and MXGP, World Enduro and Hard Enduro dirt titles. These seven titles bring Regina’s total championships to 380 since the company began supporting racing. One such product developed through real-world race testing is the new HPE line, which stands for “High Performance Endurance,” Regina’s maintenance-free chain with no regular lubrication required. “After our initial tests with the BMW Endurance Team, we’ve run over 650,000 cumulative miles on different BMW bikes to confirm the validity of this technology, applied for the first time on motorcycle chains, before bringing it to market in 2020,” said Federico Gualdi, Motorcycle Division Sales Director at Regina Chain. “These will be the official chain of teams competing in the 2025 FIM MotoE World Championship, which we’re proud to have achieved.” Gualdi believes the HPE line is the ideal chain for Adventure bike riders because of its maintenance-free features. Advanced DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coatings on the HPE Chain’s bushings and rollers result in higher hardness and lower friction. This eliminates the need for recurring lubrication, while achieving the product longevity of a standard chain

Y

ou’ve heard of keeping your head on a swivel, but what about your speakers? KICKER has made that a reality with its KMTC tower speakers. These units deliver great looks, total adjustability and next level-sound quality, all ready to mount up to almost any UTV.

KICKER’s swiveling KMTC tower speakers allow customers to aim their music in any direction.

The KMTC speaker line packs a big punch in an 8 or 6½-inch design pumping out crisp, wide-range sound complemented by integrated PEI-dome tweeters. “Our molded ABS enclosures are made for long life in the weather,” explained Lori Boyer, KICKER Regional Sales Manager. “The UV-resistant finish is anti-fading and anti-corrosion, with a proprietary design that produces outstanding sound quality in open-air environments.” This means your customers can expect powerful sound in any conditions the trail might throw at them. Swiveling function comes from KICKER’s revolutionary clamp design that not only adapts to a wide range of tube sizes, but allows users to rotate the speakers almost completely around so they can aim their music anywhere, anytime, without using tools. 1

emember when UTVs were bare-bones vehicles intended for all work and no play? Well, the line between those two is more blurred than ever, and it’s for the better. Late-model Can-Am Defenders are available with creature comforts like climate-controlled cabs, creating the perfect opportunity to upgrade to a serious sound system.

Serving as the foundation of the system is the Stage 4 Four-Speaker Audio Visor with an all-in-one design featuring four, 6.5-inch speakers, a built-in amplifier and an LED source unit. Combined, these additions provide immersive sound and enhance the experience with deep bass.
