ADVANCING NUCLEAR SCIENCE

Nuclear Science Engineering and Research Facility Abilene Christian University | Abilene, TX Parkhill partnered with national leader Nuclear Energy Consultants (NEC) of Rockville, Maryland in the scoping and design of this project – a class of reactor which was not even classified for regulation by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). In late winter 2020, Parkhill was selected by Abilene Christian University (ACU) to design a 34,000 SF two-story research facility to be built on the ACU Abilene Campus – in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, and Georgia Tech University – that would house the first collegiate-based fourth-generation molten-salt-moderated uranium test reactor in the world. In addition to programming and designing offices, meeting spaces, radiological laboratory and fabrication spaces, Parkhill was also tasked with coordinating and designing for a 30-foot-tall research bay with significant structural coordination needs, including incorporating a NOG-1-rated 50-ton-capacity overhead bridge crane, a massive 25-foot-deep subgrade reactor trench designed both to carry dead and live loads of many hundreds of tons, and act as latent radiological shielding for the planned 1 MW test reactor that would be emplaced in the trench. This experience in handling sophisticated infrastructure, specialized equipment, and regulatory compliance directly aligns with the skills needed to successfully deliver a high-containment public health laboratory for the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

ADVANCING DATA CENTER TECHNOLOGY

Kansas City Data Center Due Diligence Kansas City, MO Henderson Engineers partnered with this confidential client in their bid to purchase and upgrade an existing data center into a high-performance data center. With over 6,000,000 people in the state and a rapidly expanding tech sector, Kansas City has quickly become a hub for data center operators in the United States. The goal was to squeeze every ounce of potential out of the existing infrastructure and make it better by expanding its power density while laying the groundwork and master planning for future upgrades. Henderson took the existing 36,200 SF of critical space with a 4.4MW power density and transformed it into a facility ready for up to 50MW, along with a new building addition. Our approach maximized the existing infrastructure while paving the way for future scalability. By reusing as much of the current setup as possible, we gave the facility a fresh start without reinventing the wheel. Key upgrades included converting the 2N topology to N+1 and conducting a deep dive into the raised access floor (RAF) and its structural integrity. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling helped optimize airflow, ensuring the facility ran cool, calm, and collected. Thanks to Henderson’s experience, with their upgraded data center designs, Henderson has set this confidential client up with the blueprint to move forward confidently, backed by smart design and plenty of room to grow.. Confidential Data Center & DAS Facility Confidential, CA Henderson Engineers provided building system design and commissioning services on a data center and DAS facility that supports a stadium and adjacent entertainment district. Key features include communication systems and seismic design and studies for the facility. The data hall employs UL listed modular building components to comprise the portion that provides shell space for the DAS distribution centers. Our team worked with the design team to develop cooling characteristics, components, and component layout as well as the HCAV system head-end module and its associated components. This project utilized a prefabrication/modular constructor (TAS) due to an aggressive schedule. Utilizing off-site construction in central TX for the building and internal infrastructure components in approximately 12’x40’ modules allowed the work to occur concurrent to the site development and site utility work. This method saved time compared to a typical construction approach. SERVICES | Electrical | Fire & Life Safety | Mechanical | Plumbing

ADVANCING KNOWLEDGE THROUGH DESIGN

Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration Expansion Texas Tech University | Lubbock, TX Architecture and Engineering Design of Vertical Construction Following the successful completion of the original Jerry S. Rawls College of Business Administration (RCOBA) in early 2012, a new and interesting problem arose. In early 2014, both RCOBA Leadership and TTU System Facilities Planning and Construction approached Parkhill with a quandary - the two-year old facility had proven so successful that enrollment had far outpaced even the most optimistic programmatic projections for the original project. RCOBA needed to rapidly expand their facility to accommodate additional classrooms, a dedicated testing center, and provide conference space for symposia, as well as additional food service offerings for a substantial percentage of the TTU student body who spent a significant amount of time at RCOBA. Parkhill was equal to the task, working rapidly with end users to program and design their additional spatial needs in the form of a 38,000 SF three-story “L” winged expansion to the west of the new but existing RCOBA facility. Parkhill worked with the Owner and CMAR to expedite design through the issuance of multiple bid packages, while seeking out creative cost saving design solutions such as salvaging the existing building west entrance cut stone facade and transplanting it to the new far west entrance to the RCOBA addition. A Chick-Fil-A restaurant was added to the southwesternmost ground floor corner of the addition with separate dedicated air handling and exhaust that was isolated from the rest of the facility. The RCOBA Expansion proved to be a much-needed and successful project, completed on schedule in time for opening for the fall semester of 2016.

ADVANCING SCIENCE INNOVATION

BASF Seeds Innovation Center Texas Tech University System Facilities | Lubbock, TX Parkhill developed a space program and design for the first private-partnership research lease space facility on the Texas Tech Campus in Lubbock – the Seeds Innovation Center. The facility became a primary node for the North American cotton and soy operations of Bayer Crop Science, a major arm of the $70 Billion global magnate Bayer AG. This challenging project involved Parkhill working not only within the processes and culture of a Texas Tech project, but also within the distinctly different and nuanced processes and culture of Bayer CropScience. We found a design solution that integrated both new and existing construction into a functional work environment for a team of nearly 100 administrators, sales personnel, researchers, plant biologists, and agricultural field specialists – each of which had previously operated in different facilities and office cultures. In addition, we resolved the obstacles of renovating the existing University College Building (UCB) into the totally new interior environment of a high-tech open workspace for Bayer CropScience’s business operations, and research and development laboratory spaces. The new Center included a separate new 52,000 SF headhouse and greenhouse facility – a building that mates the exterior heritage of Spanish Renaissance-revival architecture with high-tech office spaces, work areas, and a highly-sophisticated 35,000 SF greenhouse. We worked within the budget to create an entirely new visual appearance for Bayer’s office workspace environment – areas that carefully integrate open modular workspaces with perimeter offices, conference spaces, and shared workrooms – all of which incorporate the use of transparent all-glass corridor walls and entries. We integrated daylighting into workspaces wherever possible. Both the research and development office suite and headhouse have shared work zones that promote team interaction, including collaboration between different departments such as molecular biologists and trait development field technicians. Shortly after the completion in 2016, Bayer CropScience was acquired by BASF, resulting in the project name change.

USDA Lubbock Cotton Classing Laboratory Texas Tech University and USDA | Lubbock, TX The Lubbock Classing Lab is at the forefront of cotton classing technology and will be instrumental in the future of the agricultural industry in West Texas. This is the first USDA AMS laboratory in the United States built specifically for automated classing. It is also the first lab designed to inspire collaboration and innovation with a Carnegie Tier One Institution of Higher Learning- Texas Tech University. The USDA AMS Cotton and Tobacco (CTP) Program selected Parkhill to design its critical cotton classing labs. Over the past 12 years, Parkhill has designed, renovated, or assessed eight facilities. These labs maintain strict temperature and humidity controls to uniformly class cotton to ASTM standards. The latest, the Lubbock Cotton Classing Lab, is the first built for automated cotton classing. Parkhill collaborated with CTP stakeholders in Memphis through an intensive design charrette. This four-day iterative process involved gathering input, sketching designs, and providing immediate feedback. The resulting lab is visitor-friendly, with elevated conference space overlooking the automated classing floor and a rotating display for temperature, humidity, and other messages. The lab also features a “Flex Space” for research and development, meetings, and lectures. It marks the first CTP partnership with Texas Tech University, fostering collaborative research in fiber and biopolymer fields. The design ensures efficiency, with state-of-the-art HVAC systems, energysaving features, and a unique blend of functionality and aesthetic harmony with Texas Tech’s Spanish Renaissance style.

Administration Headquarters Texas Tech University | Lubbock, TX Texas Tech University needed a cost-effective and dynamic single home to its system administration. Project challenges included creating a transparent and secure, but nonostentatious work environment for over 200 personnel and eleven departments within a compact site and a three-story structure of less than 80,000 GSF. The new headquarters integrates technologically-advanced meeting spaces, promotes interface and engagement between departments previously spread across a myriad of locations, and equips the TTU System with a humble, but statured facility that can propel the TTU System into the 21st century. A diverse range of departments including the Chancellor’s Office, Board of Regents, Institutional Advancement, and Facilities Planning & Construction are now under one roof, where employees now enjoy the synergy of working in a single environment. Located at the east corner of Texas Tech Parkway and the Marsha Sharp Freeway on the western perimeter of the Texas Tech Campus, the new building has established an architectural precedent for this area of the campus, while concurrently defining the University System headquarters as being apart from that of the University. Reflective of the architectural heritage of the TTU Campus, the exterior of the System Office Building includes a unique combination of Spanish Renaissance massing and detailing, carefully merged with more contemporary elements such as a multi-story curtain wall and ribbon clerestories. Likewise, interior spaces blend a timeless palette of clean stone and wood finishes with contemporary iterations of elements such as rejeria – Spanish ironwork – and stile-and-rail wood paneling.

John C. Williams Aqueduct and Well Field Canadian River Municipal Authority | Sanford, TX The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority sought to improve the quality and increase the quantity of water provided by the CRMWA and its existing surface water supply from Lake Meredith to its eleven member cities and 450,000 customers (Amarillo, Lubbock, Pampa, Borger, Plainview, Levelland, Brownfield, Tahoka, O’Donnell, Slaton, and Lamesa). The initial phase included the development of a 50 square mile wellfield in Roberts County, 36 miles of 54-inch pipeline to deliver water to the Authority’s existing aqueduct located south of Fritch, Texas, two transmission pump stations, 27 groundwater wells with capacities ranging from 750 gpm to 3,000 gpm, two well field pump stations, groundwater monitoring wells, and 22 miles of well field collection piping ranging in size from 8 inches to 30 inches. It also included wellfield electrical distribution and access road systems and a SCADA system to interact with the Authority’s existing system. The project began with design in 1995, delivery of groundwater in 2001, an expansion of the well field, including 15 additional wells and 12 miles of 54-inch pipe, and 13 miles of collection pipe with construction completed by mid-2010. We are completing an additional four wells, three miles of 18-inch collection pipe which will be in operation by end of the summer 2025. Due to the varied nature of the work (wells, pipelines, pump stations, electrical distribution, access roads), the most challenging aspect of the project was coordinating as many as ten contractors working simultaneously in the same general area. All three phases of the CRMWA well field project utilized test holes to identify the optimum formation locations to determine the placement of production wells. By employing sophisticated electronic logging, improved formation characterization could be derived. Following the test hole and logging program, several prototype wells were constructed to validate assumptions and hypotheses regarding the formation. Additionally, water quality testing was performed to verify potable water standards could be met. Electromagnetic imaging technology made this project unique.

DESIGNING SOLUTIONS IN MASSIVE SCALE

McKinney Municipal Complex City of McKinney | McKinney, TX In May 2019, McKinney voters passed a bond election for a new Municipal Community Complex. The goal of the complex was to include public and community spaces for City Council and citizens, as well as various City departments, which were currently in multiple buildings throughout downtown, to promote a sense of community, inclusion, and collaboration. Parkhill teamed with Lake|Flato with the idea of the Municipal Complex becoming the central part of a new district that would be created on the east side of Highway 5 within a 13-acre site. The district was intended to reflect the character of the existing downtown on the west side of Highway 5 by mirroring the framework of a 200’ x 200’ city block. The new Municipal Complex was designed to complement existing development and serve as a catalyst for redevelopment within the area. The City Hall within the complex was anticipated to be approximately 180,000 SF and house city departments, including the City Manager, City Secretary, Communications and Marketing, Development Services, Financial Services, Housing and Community Development, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Parks and Recreation Administration. The City’s Municipal Court was also included in the planning of the district. The Municipal Complex was centered around multi-purpose community spaces, both indoors and outdoors, with the potential of a City Council Chambers that was separate to promote use by the community. The design of the Municipal Complex also incorporated green space, connections to the City’s hike and bike trail network, and Old Settler’s Park. As part of a new Municipal Complex, Parkhill was to provide the design to replace 50+ year-old water and sanitary sewer lines within a 15-block area. This project was in the schematic design phase, with an anticipated start date for the preparation of construction documents in fall 2021.

A campuswide central plant for chilled water and heated water was included in the project. Our systems also support a transparent canopy that shelters fans while allowing natural sunlight to wash across the field during the game. The canopy is made from durable and sustainable flourine-based plastic to minimize environmental impact. Sustainability and energy efficient systems were essential to the project. By performing a microclimate analysis based on the stadium’s location, we were able to evaluate bowl cooling options. In addition, we preformed life cycle analysis of energy sources and building systems and LED lighting pay back analysis. The project’s sustainable strategies meet all Title 24 and Cal Green requirements. The engineering and technology systems are designed to not only create an enjoyable environment for fans, but also allow for flexibility in the venue. SERVICES | Acoustics

ADVANCING MEDICAL SCIENCE

Baird Center Wisconsin Center District | Milwaukee, WI The Wisconsin Center District in Milwaukee built on the momentum established by the construction of the Fiserv Forum and The Deer District by embarking on Phase 3 of the Wisconsin Center. Henderson Engineers served as the prime mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire and life safety (MEPF) and technology consultant, proudly leading a diverse and predominantly local team of partners to bring this vision to life. The expansion created a convention campus, with two distinct entrances and two distinct blocks of meeting and ballroom space, tied together over a busy city street by a contiguous exhibit hall spanning from the north end to the south end of the expanded convention center. This added approximately 110,000 SF of elevated exhibit hall space, 35,000 SF of meeting rooms, 90,000 SF of lobbies and pre-function areas, and a 30,000 SF ballroom perched on an expansive roof terrace offering dramatic views to the Northeast. The expansion also included a new satellite central utility plant, where heating hot water and domestic hot water were derived from a municipal scale district steam system. This integration to the city’s district steam infrastructure contributes to the Baird Center’s 23% energy efficiency improvement over typical new convention centers. Electrically, the expansion features a medium voltage service and distributed medium voltage feeders across the wide facility footprint to minimize typical electrical efficiency losses while effectively powering the densely used event spaces portions of the facility. The expansion also incorporates rooftop solar power generation, tied into the building’s distribution infrastructure, reinforcing a commitment to sustainability and desire to reduce reliance on fossil fuel powered electricity generating infrastructure.
