Welcome to Paradise News May 2025 edition. Seven months have passed since our coast was severely impacted by flood waters for the first time in over a century. Seems like even though Helene was an unusual storm event, the smart money is betting on a recurrence in less than another 100 years. We are still trying to get our home livable, and hurricane season is around the corner again. While our return home date is still a moving target, progress is being made almost daily.

For 30 years, Paradise News has published monthly from October to May and bimonthly for June-July and August-September. That means that our next two editions give advertisers the opportunity to be on display for 60 days, for the cost of 30 days. While there are a lot of smaller hotels and some restaurants that will not return, others are back, and exciting new places are already opening. This month’s cover story, Malio’s Beach House, is a shining example. They have opened to the kind of a rave response one might have expected had the storms of last fall not occurred, and more hotel rooms were available. The Centre of St. Pete Beach is also coming back in a new and improved fashion. A popular restaurant and a soon to debut kava bar are only part of the story. We appreciate the efforts of our dedicated writers, proofreader, and art director – some of whom have kept your Paradise News on track for years, not to mention the last six months. We appreciate our restaurant, realtor, and other advertisers so much, remaining faithful as our readers struggle with permits and repairs or make life-changing decisions. We value our new advertisers highly as well, especially the many local realtors, and folks like Jeremy and Ashley Patterson and their family at Modern House and Building Movers, as well as Ryan and Hailey Young of OrganiClean, who are helping some of our neighbors move on with their homes and their lives. Especially hard hit, both nationally and in Florida, are the arts organizations that St. Petersburg has become world famous for. On May 20, The Dali Museum will hold a special event – a screening of an original experimental art film, Dali’s Dream, based on Lisa Monde’s award-winning original play of the same name – winner of the Broadway World Awards 2024 for Best Play. The play Dali’s Dream premiered Off-Broadway at the Gene Frankel Theatre. Salvador Dalí worshiped the famous psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud and ardently wished to meet him. Irv’s efforts have addressed some of the region’s most pressing challenges – from increasing access to tech education to scaling nonprofit impact to building public-private partnerships that tackle homelessness, education gaps, and food insecurity. At the heart of his mission is the belief in removing barriers to opportunity. Through CodeBoxx Foundation, Cohen has helped hundreds of individuals from marginalized communities enter the tech industry by providing free, intensive coding education and career placement support. The result: sustainable, high-paying careers that change lives and break cycles of poverty. FEMA is ending the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program and canceling all BRIC applications from fiscal years 2020-2023. If grant funds have not been distributed to states, tribes, territories and local communities, funds will be immediately returned either to the Disaster Relief Fund or the U.S. Treasury. $882 million of funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will be returned to the U.S. Treasury or reapportioned by Congress in the next fiscal year. The 2021 law made $1 billion available for BRIC over five years, $133 million to date has been provided for about 450 applications. FEMA estimates more than $3.6 billion will remain in the Disaster Relief Fund to assist with disaster response and recovery.

The city of St. Petersburg is considering demolishing Al Lang Stadium – home of the Tampa Bay Rowdies – for an amphitheater and a waterfront park. Exploratory plans and conceptual renderings for the proposed Center for the Arts District were recently released. The district would stretch from just south of the St. Pete Pier to Fifth Ave. S and includes the Mahaffey Theater, Salvador Dalí Museum, Al Lang Stadium, and the site of the Saturday Morning Market. Architecture firm ASD | SKY presented the conceptual designs, which reflect a long-term vision for the area. Key components include expanded green space near the Dalí Museum and Mahaffey Theater, a new parking garage with at least 1,100 spaces, a 60,000-square-foot conference center, and 35,000 square feet of new retail space, among other features. Originally conceived years ago, the overarching goal of the plan is to revitalize the area, improve accessibility, and enhance the experience of the city’s cultural institutions. The plan also considers the Dalí Museum’s expansion, the Florida Orchestra’s future facility, and renovations to the Mahaffey Theater. Total cost is an estimated $290 million. If approved, construction could begin in 2025.

American Stage’s Fresh Ink monthly plays at alternate venues featuring local playwrights continues on May 27 at the Dalí Museum with Radiant Child by Jeff Norton. This solo performance delves into the life and legacy of iconic artist Keith Haring, from his own perspective. Following the show, guests can engage in a meaningful post-show discussion on legacy in art, with proceeds supporting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Tickets for “Radiant Child” can be purchased through the Dalí Museum’s website. The series concludes on June 24 at Webb’s City Cellar with Black History They Don’t Want You To Know, written by Lance Felton. The short play debuted at Studio@620 this past February and blends hip-hop, poetry, and theatre to highlight hidden figures in Black history. “My rap music has always been my diary. But in the context of a play about Black history, music is integral to the Black experience,” says Felton, who will also perform the piece. Fresh Ink ushers in summertime at American Stage, and even more opportunities to engage with local talent. The theatre will launch its monthlong Summer Cabaret Series on July 12, and transform into a summer speakeasy with three weekends of unique musical showcases

This column generally belongs to our senior writer, Steve Traiman, who asked for this month off to mourn the passing and celebrate the life of his better half, Bonnie. We have published travel stories by Steve about he and Bonnie, who in 62 years together traveled the world and even soared together in hot-air balloons. Bonnie was a dedicated worker who spent 25 hours per week at the St. Pete Beach Library almost until she passed. Her smiling face and helpful demeanor are already missed. Steve had long been a member of the Men’s Club at the synagogue in South Pasadena, who had catered many of the events there, and they prepared a Sunday brunch that was delicious.

places in the country, and in two months here, we have met many of the dogs in the building. Our garden drowned last fall along with our home and our cars, but we have begun to replace it, starting to grow herbs like basil, rosemary, thyme and mint on our balcony.

While I am not nearly as experienced a condo dweller as Steve, Renee and I have spent the past two months on the eighth floor of an older downtown building. We have lived in single-family homes exclusively for our 50+ years together. It took a hurricane to get us to try living in a multi-family dwelling.

Renee was an acrobat and ballerina when we met. Injuries from then have resulted in arthritic joints the second of which, her right knee, was replaced this month. With ramps and an elevator, our condo has proven a great place to recover from surgery.

My initial observation, as a tenant at least, is that it is an easier way of life than maintaining your own property. In addition, there are recreational amenities that present an opportunity for social interaction with fellow residents that must be created outside of the home in a single-family home setting. I have heard from some condo dwellers that at some stage in their lives, the ability to be able to “lock up and leave without worrying about anything” was enough temptation to move to an upper floor with an elevator. Renee is both a pet lover and a gardener. St. Pete is one of the most pet friendly

ADDRESSING SWIM SAFETY IN PARENTING PLANS By Jake Hornstein & Greg Hill, Our Children Have Rights (OCHR) One of the more difficult areas to address in Parenting Plans is extracurricular activities. These are optional activities, like swimming lessons, soccer and dance lessons. With shared decision-making, participation may be determined by each parent on the days they have time-sharing. This is addressed in the parenting plan. Parenting plan considerations include: decision-making, scheduling, and transportation. What if a parent believes an activity traditionally considered “extra-curricular” is too important to be optional, and should be mandatory? We want to discuss water safety and swim lessons. It deserves attention and it’s getting attention. In a matter of time, it will be a hot topic for parenting plans. In 2021, the Florida Legislature passed “Every Child a Swimmer.” This legislation requires all schools in the state to provide parents with information on the importance of water safety and local options for swimming lessons, as well as how to receive lessons at a free or reduced cost.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye (Listen Up!)

Have you ever stepped outside, closed your eyes, and just listened? Perhaps you heard birds chirping, water lapping, a dog barking, an airplane overhead, or the endless hum of an air conditioning condenser unit, which is very likely here in Florida. If eyesight is our window to the world, then hearing provides the soundtrack to our life. When I was a dance teacher, I had a deaf student who excelled in class, despite this disability. She could read my lips for instruction and feel the rhythm of the music from the wood floor beneath her feet. I’m sure my meager attempts at sign language were of little help. I often wished she could hear the music to which she danced so beautifully, and it certainly made me appreciate my own ability to hear. Fortunately, there are things we can do to protect this precious soundtrack and prevent noise-induced hearing loss. *Avoid prolonged exposure to loud noises above 85 decibels (about the level of a blender or noisy restaurant) and move

further away from very loud noise sources like fireworks, speakers, and sirens/alarms. *Wear earplugs to protect from low frequency sound (low-pitched, rumbling sound that can travel great distances), and earmuffs to protect from high frequency sound (high-pitched sound like a whistle). Covering your ears with your hands is the next best option in a pinch. *Keep the volume low when using headphones (at less than 60%) and don’t use them for more than an hour at a time. *Take a break from noisy environments. If your ears start ringing from too much noise, give them 12-16 hours of quiet to recover. Also, don’t insert objects into your ear canal. I know, I like Q-tips too, but they can push earwax deeper into your ear canal and potentially damage the ear drum. Try earwax removal drops if you have heavy buildup. Towel dry your outer ears after showering to keep them clean and dry. Use Swim-Ear drops to dry out the ears after swimming. HEARING LOSS comes in three forms: Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when

there is damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve, usually caused by noise exposure, certain medical conditions, and aging. Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a problem with sound transmission through the outer or middle ear, usually caused by earwax buildup, a punctured ear drum, or fluid in the ear. You may also have a mix of both sensorineural and conductive hearing loss. Hearing loss first appears as difficulty hearing in noisy environments or noticing muffled speech during conversation. It is important to see an audiologist for a hearing evaluation, who may refer you to an otolaryngologist (ENT) doctor if they suspect a disease or medical condition is causing the hearing loss. Addressing hearing loss is essential to maintaining good social interaction. I’ve had to “strongly encourage” some of my own family members to get hearing aids, as they miss out on important

There are many causes, including exposure to loud noises, ear infections, earwax buildup, age-related hearing loss, Meniere’s disease, head trauma, and medications like aspirin and antibiotics. Tinnitus may last just a few seconds, or for a prolonged period. There is no cure for tinnitus, but you can manage the symptoms with sound maskers like white noise, hearing aids, and lifestyle changes such as managing stress and getting plenty of sleep.

VERTIGO is a very disconcerting spinning or whirling sensation. Most cases of vertigo are BPPV – benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo, which involves tiny calcium carbonate crystals in your inner ear called otoconia. These crystals get dislodged from their normal position in the utricle and move into the semicircular canals where they wreak havoc when you move your head. Aside from the spinning sensation, you can experience loss of balance and sometimes nausea. A less benign cause of vertigo is AVS – acute vestibular syndrome. Vertigo from AVS lasts for more than 24 hours and is usually caused by an inner ear infection but can also arise from Meniere’s disease or brain issues like stroke and tumor. Although anyone can get vertigo, it is more common in women, older adults, and those who get migraines. Experiencing vertigo for the first time can be scary, and you should consult a doctor about the duration and frequency to determine the cause. My most recent bout of vertigo started just after I got out of bed one morning. I began falling to one side as I walked and felt the room spinning. The feeling lasted less than a minute but recurred a couple more times over the next week. A telehealth appointment confirmed a vertigo diagnosis but was of little help beyond that – a bottle

of anti-nausea medication arrived in the mail five days later. So, I searched for something that would cure it, not just treat the symptoms. That’s when I found a maneuver developed by Carol Foster MD, Professor Emerita of Otolaryngology at the University of Colorado, and director of the Balance Laboratory at University of Colorado Hospital. Years ago she created this maneuver to move the otoconia crystals back into their rightful place in the utricle. Dr. Foster explains the technique, which you can do at home, in a YouTube video online. The maneuver requires that you know which ear is affected (left or right), and you may have to repeat the sequence of movements several times before it works. After performing the maneuver 2-3 times I was vertigo free! Next time you’re outside enjoying the many sounds of nature, listening to your favorite song, or having a conversation with a friend or family member, take a moment to appreciate those two odd little structures on each side of your head. Your ears are as unique to you as fingerprints or DNA and are an essential part of enjoying life to the fullest!

Understanding Property Division in Divorce The divorce process involves dividing property and awarding it to each of the spouses. Only property that was purchased or acquired during the marriage by either or both parties (referred to as “marital property”) is subject to division by the court. Property that was owned prior to the marriage, and property purchased with money held by one of the parties prior to the marriage, is “non-marital” or separate property and not subject to divorce division. Gifts to one of the spouses or an inheritance during marriage is also considered to be non-marital property and not subject to division. Often, I will be asked if a car purchased in one of the spouse’s names alone during marriage is sufficient to create a presumption that it is non-marital property. It is not. The determining factor is when the property was acquired or the source of money that was used to purchase the property. One issue that complicates defining an asset is either marital or separate is

“commingling.” This is when marital assets are combined with separate assets, making it difficult to determine what can be divided in divorce. This occurs when one of the parties continues to deposit earnings into an account she had prior to the marriage; or, if a couple builds a home on land owned by one of the spouses prior to the marriage. During a divorce, the parties will create an itemization of property acquired during the marriage, providing a value estimate for each item. The list is referred to as an “equitable distribution worksheet.” The parties can use this spreadsheet to negotiate how property and debts will be divided. If no agreement is reached, the itemization may be used by the judge to order an “equitable distribution” of the property. When I speak to potential clients about this process, there is a misunderstanding that each party is required to get equal halves of the property. The truth is that a judge can divide the property in accordance with what they find to be the fair and equitable division under the circumstances of the case, including the past behaviors of the parties. Examples of items that are commonly divided in divorces include residential homes, vehicles, financial accounts,

retirement benefits, small business ownership, and too often, pets. Division of retirement benefits require additional orders, called domestic relations orders, that are forwarded to pension fund managers or 401k administrators to either pay a portion of the retirement benefits each month, or create a separate account to be paid to the non-employee spouse. Quite often, property disputes involve items personal to one of the parties or have a unique character. Usually, this will be over a collection, such as works of art, coins, sports cards, or even vintage toys. These items can be difficult to assign a value, which may necessitate the use of an expert appraiser. Aside from hiring an appraiser, the parties may rely on receipts for the original purchase of items, research of recent sales of similar items, or use of public markets with listings such as eBay, Facebook Market, or 1stDibs. Property division in a divorce can be complicated, especially for longer marriages or where considerable wealth is accumulated. I always recommend seeking the advice of a family law attorney to discuss your options if you are considering divorce that will involve division of personal and/or real property. Can Be a Call for Mindfulness

Ever thought a blaring siren could be your ticket to mindfulness? Yeah, it does sound a bit out there, but let’s dive in together. My first lesson in using a siren from a passing emergency vehicle as a mindfulness tool came from one of my great mentors, Dr. Fletcher Harding, over forty-years ago. As he was presenting his lesson to our class, an ambulance passed by the building with lights flashing and siren wailing. Fletch paused mid-sentence, drew a deep breath and said, “Ah … another opportunity to ‘emerge-n-see’ that, there too, is God in action, moving to render aid unto itself – and all is well.” His statement of oneness was quite staggering. We all know the sudden jolt in our day when a siren passes by. Instead of just reacting or feeling agitated by the invasive noise,

what if we used it, as Fletcher did, as a cue to ground ourselves in the present moment and invoke an awareness of the presence of Infinite Intelligence? Imagine this: as the siren wails, we choose to take a deep breath, feel our feet on the ground, and bring our attention to the now. Rumi once beautifully said, “Only let the moving waters calm down, and the sun and moon will be reflected on the surface of your being.” By pausing and tuning into our breath, we allow the turbulence of our mind to settle as the awareness of our oneness with the ALL sets in. Think of the siren as an unexpected guest knocking on the door of our awareness. Instead of getting annoyed or anxious, we can turn it into a mindfulness bell. Each time we hear it, we can take a moment to check in with our body, noticing any

tension, and then release it with a long exhale. This practice can be a powerful reminder to “stop, look, and listen,” much like Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of mindfulness as “Paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in the present moment non-judgmentally.” Incorporating mindfulness into everyday sounds, even disruptive ones like sirens, transforms our environment into a continuous reminder to stay present and connected to the moment. It’s like having a portable portal to inner peace, no matter the surrounding chaos. So, next time a siren blares, consider using it to find a slice of stillness amidst the noise. April began with a milestone, not mischief. On April 1, history was made as Gulfport’s newly elected City Council – marking a new chapter for the city – was officially sworn in. City Hall overflowed with proud residents, with dozens more gathered outside watching the live ceremony on a big screen. Councilmember Marlene Shaw opened the event with a heartfelt invocation, honoring the women who’ve helped shape Gulfport’s political legacy – beginning with our first woman mayor, Yvonne Johnson, and including Councilmembers Dawn Fisher, Barbara Banno (both present), and Yolanda Roman, represented by her mother and daughter. Shaw also read aloud the names of other pioneering women who couldn’t be there but whose impact was deeply felt. Not just the names etched in stone, but the lives behind them – mothers, fathers, sons, daughters – who gave everything so we could live in freedom, not just for its land, but for its ideals. At Home Depot, a rare, old-timey hardware guy fixed the problem in a jiffy. He introduced himself as Leon, and we started chatting about musicians named Leon (Redbone, Russell). Turns out he (Barickman) was one too and would be playing “acoustic punk” at a GCAA ArtWorks reception on April 19. His wife, Sarah Ruehmann, is a GCAA member, he said. He then showed me a photo of her piece in the upcoming Art in Bloom at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Although I write a lot about art, I don’t make enough time to enjoy it. I’m too distracted nesting with my beloved, caring for my nonagenarian mother, and keeping my condo tenant happy.

OMG, I totally forgot! One of my fave exhibitions, where artists craft floral arrangements inspired by a work of art. The most aromatic show around! I made it my business to get to the MFA that Saturday (via SunRunner, of course) to enjoy the sights and smells of the weekend-only show. Lenny was disappointed that I chose highbrow over the Pinellas Park Pepper Festival, where he was performing with the Gulfport Gecko Amalgamated Marching Band. We agreed to meet up later at Gulf Orchids’s Grand Opening, where the band had its second gig of the day. I dawdled, savoring a Sakura Cloud Tea Latte at the museum’s Clementine Cafe, and missed the band. (Lenny did as well, having dawdled over a chicken sandwich at Cheddar’s.) But I stopped to see and smell the tropical blooms at Gulf Orchids anyway. And we will make it our business to dance to some punk ‘n’ roll this weekend. ParadiseNewsFL.com | MAY 2025

Surviving the Storm ANDROMEDA EDISON Q) Where did you live prior to coming to Florida? And what motivated you to move to the specific town you’re in? A) Tujunga, California – wanted more freedom and safer environment for my kids to be raised in. Q) What type of artist are you (medium)? A) Multimedia Abstract Q) What distinguishes your work from others and what inspires you to create your work? A) My work is layered and 3-dimensional, using techniques across several mediums. I create art as a way to express the immense and often overwhelming emotions I experience. It’s my language when words aren’t enough – a way to capture the beauty, pain, joy, and complexity that build up inside me. At times, I’ve felt as though these feelings were too vast to ever fully release, as though they might consume me if left unshared. Art has become my refuge and my voice, allowing me to transform those emotions into something tangible and meaningful. My hope is that my work resonates with others, offering them the same sense of release, healing, and connection that it provides me. If my art helps someone feel seen or unburdens a part of their soul, then I know it has fulfilled its purpose. A) I guess you can call it a mixed medium as I invented my own technique to sculpt with stashes on a wood surface Q) What are the awards and recognitions that you have received? A) I had my solo art show for the entire month of June with 80 pieces at the Poway Center for the Performing arts, San Diego, California. I was a member of St. Pete Artworks gallery for five years until its recent relocation. I am a member of Pinellas Park Art association where I received numerous awards and recognitions. I am a member of CAG of Dunedin and will be selling my at its Art in Park show next Sunday. I sell at Corey market; Imagine Museum market; and I used to sell at Pass-a-Grille market. By now, I’m pretty well established at St. Petersburg art scene for my recognizable and one-of-thekind approaches to art. I take pride in the fact that in the world of art where almost every avenue has been explored, I came up with something new that can be associated with my name only. I sculpt with seashells and other offerings from the ocean forming unique 3D artwork, painted with acrylics and protected with UV resin.
