Antique Paperweights and Related Objects

1 Very rare antique Clichy moss ground with central rose paperweight. An outstanding assortment of thirty-six millefiori is gathered in three spaced concentric rings around a large and striking iconic pink and green rose cane. The canes include an additional rose of contrasting color in each ring, pastry molds, stardust, edelweiss flowers and cogs, among others, in various shades of pink, red, blue and purple, with a bit of green, yellow and white. A carpet of green moss canes, each centered by a tiny red-dotted white floret, creates the soft groundwork for the colorful millefiori. “Clichy used its moss ground in this weight to create the illusion of vibrant wildflowers on a green lawn.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition . “One of the most sought after paperweight designs is Clichy’s striking spaced millefiori on a moss green carpet ground.” —The Art of the Paperweight.

2 Extremely rare and historically important antique Pietro Bigaglia and Giovanni Franchini 1845 Czar Nicholas I of Russia paperweight. Giovanni Franchini produced exquisite picture and word canes that were utilized in Pietro Bigaglia’s famous paperweights. The date of “22 Dec 1845” was particularly important since it commemorates the very special day in December when Czar Nicholas I of Russia visited Venice, as indicated by the letters “NC” appearing below a picture cane of a crown. A few other monogrammed examples were made for special guests during this same occasion, including one with the letter “O” for the King of Greece and the letter “A” for his wife, Amalia. The Czar’s paperweight represents a typical Bigaglia burst of strong colors and goldstone made from a dense gathering of bits of ribbons, canes and filigree. Picture canes of rose bushes, a gondola, characters from the popular Italian “Commedia dell’Arte” the Arlecchino and the Pantaloon, a lion of St. Mark, different animals and a variety of complex millefiori, including crosses, representing the zeitgeist of 1845 Venice that Franchini wanted to impress on the special visitor, are scattered on the surface of the colorful background.

3 Very rare antique Saint Louis green millefiori carpet ground paperweight. A complex cane, with tiers of tiny white florets, some collared in pink and the central one with a yellow collar, is the apex of a spun carpet of green cog staves, each lined with red and dotted with a small white and blue floret cane. A horse, a dog, a devil, two dancing devils and a dancing couple, all in silhouette of various styles and colors, spin in a mad gallop around a central complex cane, nestled in a cambered carpet of iconic goldenrod cog canes. A mushroom cap has an iconic pink and green rose cane at the apex, encircled by four close concentric rings of contrasting complex canes in red, blue, green and white. A basket of alternating pale blue and white staves is pulled downward to create a stem for the mushroom. Star-cut clear ground. 10 Antique Clichy close concentric millefiori and roses mushroom overlay faceted paperweight. A ring of nine iconic pink and green rose canes surrounds a central moss cane and is surrounded by four more close concentric rings of complex canes, including purple pastry molds, ruffle canes and white floret canes. The concentric rings form the tuft of a mushroom, held in a white and pink staves basket, pulled downward to create a stem. Daisy-cut clear ground. 11 Exceptional antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A stately and remarkable cambered mushroom, with a salmon, white and blue complex cane at the apex giving the color palette to the three cascading tiers of complex canes that surround it, sits on a contrasting ring of green, red and white star cog staves, pulled perfectly downward into a tapered stem to the center of a star-cut clear ground. A blue-encased white torsade, topped by a mercury ring, encircles the perimeter of the design, inside an ample and well-formed clear gather. Excellent condition.

An arrowhead cane is centered by a ring of orange, white and blue complex star canes, at the heart of two interlaced trefoil garlands, one of green and white star bundles and the other of pink and white bull’s-eye rings around a central blue six-point star each. 15 Antique Saint Louis 1848 close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A mushroom has a central pink, blue and white complex cane, inside a ring of blue, green and white floret complex canes, encircled by a ring of white stardust and green bull’s-eye canes, and finally by a ring of cadmium yellow and blue floret complex canes. The rings are held in a stave basket of hollow pink cogs, pulled down into a tapered stem for the mushroom and includes a black signature/date cane. A blue-encased white chaplet bead torsade, topped by a single mercury ring, encircles the base of the stem. Star-cut clear ground.

17 Rare antique Baccarat patterned concentric shamrock and butterfly millefiori paperweight. A central red and white cog cane is encircled by four concentric rings, one of complex canes that includes blue arrow canes and stars, another of red and white cog canes, along with a ring of seven rare green shamrock silhouette canes and, finally, a border garland of fourteen spaced rare golden-wing butterfly canes, all resting in a wispy cushion of white upset muslin. 20 Unusual antique Baccarat red double clematis, bud and millefiori garland paperweight. An unusual double-tiered clematis specimen has six red striped petals around a green arrowhead cane center, followed by an outer tier of nine petals, creating a lush poinsettia-style flower. It is joined by a contrasting sheathed white bud, hidden in a halo with five aventurine-speckled green leaves. The blossoms emerge from a deeply curved green stem, with one leaf, also speckled with green aventurine, inside a border garland of alternating blue and red-accented white millefiori. Clear ground. A rare Type II primrose, its five petals made of white cog slices with cobalt blue centers, is joined on a sinuous forking stem by a pastry mold-style complex cane and five crenulated green leaves. A large purple dancing devil silhouette inside a purple-collared white cog cane is the focus of eight radial white rods that define eight triangular panels of red, amber and white jasper alternating with blue and white jasper ground, over a visible green and white jasper ground. 29 Rare antique Clichy commemorative Crystal Palace sulphide paperweight. A shimmering silver sulphide of a scene, with a powder blue sky, surrounding the original and grand Crystal Palace is annotated with “BUILDING FOR THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF INDUSTRY OF ALL NATIONS IN LONDON, 1851” in blue lettering, followed by “A.B. PARIS”. Stamp signed “Martoret” on the back as well as faint stamp signature at the bottom edge of front. Queen Victoria wrote in her diary, “The exhibition goes to prove that we are capable of doing almost anything”. See pages 36-38 in The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights.

30 Antique Baccarat 1847 close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A close packed arrangement contains a signature/date cane among a colorful array of assorted complex canes, including shamrocks, fortresses, six-point stars, honeycombs, green leaves, whorls, trefoils and quatrefoils, as well as two different flower picture canes and the Gridel silhouettes of a pigeon, dog, pheasant, horse, red devil and white monkey. A few segments of colorful lace are revealed between the canes.

Five rounded red-edged white petals radiate around a central arrowhead and fortress complex cane, ringed with white and red stars, to form a lovely wallflower. A pretty flower, with five notched velvety cobalt blue petals around a dimensional yellow, black and green center, blooms atop a green stem alongside two slender green leaves, a slender sepal peering between each petal. Two nearly thin black lines accent each of the flower’s petals. Double-swirl white latticinio cushion over clear ground. Excellent condition.

Bidding

If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Condition

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned separately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. A Buyer’s Premium of 20% will be applied to all forms of payment and an additional 3% will be applied to the total invoice as a processing fee for debit and credit card payments. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress and Discover cards, checks, cash, Zelle QuickPay and bank wire transfer payments. Bank wire transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer. No other forms of payment are accepted. All checks must be drawn from a U.S. bank and mailed to PO Box 127, Hadensville, VA 23067. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until full payment is received.

Shipping

Orders are shipped using USPS Priority Mail, with Signature Confirmation required for delivery, once full payment is received. Alternate shipping methods are available and will be billed at cost, if requested by the buyer. Tracking information will be provided. Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $22 for the first paperweight and $7 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $55 plus $7 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $85 plus $7 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping and insurance for over-sized items will vary according to size and weight. Buyers are responsible for providing a correct shipping address to L.H. Selman Ltd. and assume responsibility for undeliverable packages. Buyers are responsible for any additional fees required to take possession of the package.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

Selman Ltd. makes every effort to describe each lot with complete accuracy and accepts responsibility for the authenticity of the items offered for auction.
