Antique Paperweights and Related Objects

1 Extremely rare antique European, possibly Pantin, tulip and patterned millefiori garland paperweight. Considered one of the Pantin “Rosetta Stones” that bridged the identification gap between lampwork and millefiori, a sprightly dimensional pink-shaded tulip has a cup of five exotic multi-tone petals, streaked in yellow, red and blue on the interior, with a swirled yellow pistil embedded safely within. The blossom emerges on a short stem from a swatch of five bladed mint-green leaves, inside a patterned millefiori garland of eight alternating millefiori circlets, each centered by an alternating complex cane, in red, white, blue and green. 2 Extremely rare antique Mount Washington dimensional fruit and flower wreath magnum paperweight. A heaping cluster of shaded cobalt blue berries hangs in a colorful flower wreath with four double-tiered flowers, one light pink with aventurine stripes, one dark pink, one light yellow and one amber yellow, each centered by a lush and dimensional corresponding stamen bundle. The connecting circular vine also gives rise to an incredible bud, with a cascade of petals in the colors of its neighbors, and a few green leaves, all dusted with shimmering dew. Clear ground. 3 Rare antique Pietro Bigaglia and Giovanni Franchini 1846 spaced millefiori scrambled paperweight. An assortment of whole and partial Franchini canes includes rose trios, horses, ducks, two gondola canes, characters from the popular Italian “Commedia dell’Arte” the Harlequin and the Arlecchino canes, an anthropomorphic sun, a double eagle with the initials “F1” on its chest, the emblem of Austrian Emperor Ferdinand, an “1846” cane and a “PB 1846” cane, pressed into a Bigaglia gathering of bits of ribbons, canes, filigree and aventurine. 4 Very rare antique Silesian/Bohemian Harrach Glassworks “Basket of Flowers” close concentric millefiori annotated paperweight. A dimensional basket, made of radial white staves, shaped and drawn to connect two green ribbon rims, is filled with close concentric rings of assorted complex canes in red, white and green. A green ribbon handle arches above the flowers and connects to the top rim of the basket. The design is encased in clear glass, etched in gothic calligraphy with “D. Glücksman”, which casts a stylish shadow on the stem of the basket. Pictured and discussed on page 187 of Classic Paperweights from Silesia/ Bohemia . Pictured and discussed on pages 69-70 and 73 of Glass Paperweights: The Heritage of the 19th Century Riesengebirge and Isergebirge Glassworks. “This weight required much labor as well as master skills to be made successfully.” Fair condition.

5 Rare antique European, attributed to Russia, scrambled millefiori paperweight. A dense cambered gathering of complex millefiori, several repeating throughout the design, includes arrowhead, star, rod and snowflake complex canes, in predominantly subdued shades of blue, pink, purple and white. The unusual collection of canes is discussed in the 2002 and 2007 PCA Bulletins, on pages 9-14 and 64-65, respectively, and attributed to Russian artists. “The Russian Empire invited art masters from around the world, so it’s possible that some millefiori glass masters immigrated to Russia from Bohemia, Silesia, or France. This would explain why Russian paperweights are very hard to find but are excellent examples of glassmaking art.” A similar example sold in the L.H. Selman Ltd. Fall 2022 82nd Auction as lot 2. 6 Extremely rare antique Pantin magenta pink rose and bud paperweight. A sumptuous rose has several layers of overlapping shaded magenta petals, carefully sheathing a yellow center and haloed by bright green sepals that peer shyly from behind. A companion bud sprouts next to the rose, still cradled by a cage of mint-green sepals, amidst a crown of three large green leaves. A stem supports the delightful blooms, flanked by two more leaves. Opaque white ground. “Wherever they were made they are Victorian workmanship at its best.” —Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society. From the collection of Harvey H. and Doris B. 7 Rare antique Baccarat four-flower bouquet faceted paperweight. A serene double-tiered white clematis, with a star honeycomb cane center, is framed by a pair of the rarest pansies, both Type I pansies with the hallmark arrowhead cane lower petals, and is crowned by a rare thousand-petal red rose bud, conical with tiers of cascading petals, joined by a sheathed bud. The nearly identical pansies differ only in the coloring of their top two velvety petals, one dark maroon and the other a shaded purple. The resulting delightful bouquet is balanced with bright green leaves, some shimmering with aventurine, and gathered by a pair of crossed stems. Star-cut clear ground. Six and one facets. 8 Remarkable antique Clichy millefiori nosegay with large pink rose paperweight. An exceptionally large sublime rose cane, with tiers of delicate pink-shaded petals sheathing a central bundle of yellow stamens, belongs to a fragrant bouquet, topped by a pair of millefiori, one cerulean blue and the other red, spaced by three serrated green leaves and perched on a thin stem, flanked by two more leaves. Clear ground.

9 Very rare antique Baccarat 1847 close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouettes magnum paperweight. Brightly colored and varied millefiori, including the Gridel silhouettes of an elephant, monkey, rooster, goat, horse, a few pheasants and two dogs, a flower picture cane, whorl bundles and honeycomb, among other iconic designs, blanket an inner layer of colorful upset muslin like a cambered densely-blooming prairie. Diamond-cut to base. Signature/date cane. “This Baccarat staple is one of the most consistently interesting weight ever made, always revealing something new.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. 11 Rare antique Saint Louis silhouettes on white carpet ground paperweight. Spaced silhouette canes of a dancing man, camel, dog, dancing devil and horse, each in a ring of blue, red and white hollow cog canes, encircle a central ring of the same hollow cog canes around a red, white and blue star complex cane at the apex. The design is spaced in a cambered carpet of ever-smaller red-core white complex cog canes. Clear ground.

12 Rare antique Clichy C-scroll millefiori and rose garlands paperweight. A red complex cog cane centers three concentric rings of green, white and pink canes, around which six C-scroll garlands, each different from the next, including one with twelve red-centered white roses and one with eleven pink and green roses, mark the brand of Clichy. 13 Rare antique Baccarat patterned millefiori with shamrock and butterfly picture canes paperweight. Seven lucky green shamrocks on white canes encircle a central red and white rod cog cane and are in turn encircled by a ring of the rod cog canes. A contrasting ring of blue, red and white arrowhead canes ensues, before a ring of fourteen open and spaced butterfly canes encircles the design. White upset muslin cushion ground. “These are weights of power and impact whose design must have taken considerable thought.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. 14 Antique Saint Louis 1848 close concentric millefiori with dog silhouette cane paperweight. A large white-lined purple dog silhouette cane, surrounded by a 28-point white cog, centers five close concentric rings of complex millefiori in pink, red, green, white, yellow and blue. A final ring of blue and white hollow cog canes is pulled downward into a stave basket. Signature/date cane. Diameter 3 1/8"

15 Remarkable antique Clichy close concentric millefiori and roses mushroom overlay faceted paperweight. An iconic pink and green rose cane centers five close concentric rings, including a ring with nine more cousins spaced by purple cogs, a ring with thirteen white and green roses spaced by red pastry molds, two rings of green canes and a ring of alternating white and pink ruffle canes. The concentric rings form the tuft of a mushroom, held in a white and green staves basket, pulled downward to create a stem. Clear ground. 16 Antique Clichy interlaced millefiori and roses quatrefoil garlands faceted paperweight. A quatrefoil garland of blue pastry mold canes interlaces with a quatrefoil garland of an impressive thirty-two iconic pink and green rose canes. Their center void is occupied by a close concentric design of a ring of red cogs, a ring of green cogs and a central white and green rose cane. Star-cut clear ground. Five and one facets. Fine condition.

17 Rare antique Clichy barber pole millefiori chequer with roses paperweight. A beautiful trademark pink and green rose rests at the center of two concentric rings of diverse millefiori bundles, pastry molds, ruffles and cogs, including a green and white rose and an uncommon pink and white rose. Cables of cobalt blue and white latticinio, over parallel strips of white latticinio, divide the millefiori rings. This design departs from the traditional white chequer pattern with colorful blue and white filament twist for a bolder and richer effect. 18 Antique Clichy millefiori panel paperweight. A large central ring of pale blue and white bull’s-eye and stardust canes surrounds a ring of red and white bull’s-eye cogs and an inner ring of green complex canes, all focusing in on a tiny white complex cane at the apex as the nexus to eight radial petal-shaped panels. Each panel is different from the next, in white, blue, pink and green. Opaque pink-over-white ground. Internal flaw.

19 Antique Saint Louis patterned millefiori on pink carpet ground paperweight. Set within a carpet of coral pink-lined hollow sawmill white cogs, a central motif of three concentric rings in white, pink, green and blue, with the outer ring made of green cogs, is encircled by five spaced green cog circles, each with a pink-lined white sawmill cog cane center. 20 Antique Silesian/Bohemian, attributed to Riesengebirge Josephinenhutte, spaced concentric millefiori and silhouettes paperweight. Boldly-colored millefiori circlet canes, including the silhouettes of an eagle, two dogs and two monkeys, are spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin, with bits of colorful twists. 21 Antique Saint Louis 1848 close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A mushroom has a central red and white star floret cane inside a ring of blue hollow cogs and a ring of red-line white tubes, encircled by four concentric rings of diverse millefiori staves, including ogee-tipped canes, tubes and complex canes. The rings are pulled down into a tapered white stem for the mushroom and includes a black signature/date cane. A blue-encased white chaplet bead torsade, topped by a single mercury ring, encircles the base of the stem. Star-cut clear ground. From the collection of Harvey H. and Doris B. Robinson. 22 Antique Clichy close packed millefiori with pseudo roses and signature cane in stave basket paperweight. Pink and green pseudo rose canes are scattered in a packed field of varied millefiori in rich colors, including stardust, rod bundles, bull’s-eyes and a “C” signature cane. 24 Very rare antique Baccarat Swan-on-a-Pond hollow faceted paperweight. A delicately-crafted dimensional white swan, with red eyes and a black beak, glides at the center of a placid clear pond, ringed by a green and white jasper bank, over a star-cut clear ground. Swans were a common heraldic symbol, standing for beauty and grace, a fitting motif for such a well-conceived paperweight. Six and one facets. “All of these designs are very rare. 25 Rare antique Baccarat pink snake on upset muslin paperweight. A stocky pink snake, with copious green dorsal markings and red eyes and nose, is coiled twice around itself as it rests its head gently on its own body. White upset muslin. 26 Rare antique Baccarat “Thousand Petal” red rose paperweight. Six green leaves crown a multi-tiered red rose as it blooms atop a thin green stem, with two additional green leaves. Starcut clear ground. “So called because of its numerous petals, the unmistakable splendor of the “thousand petaled” rose speaks of a love with boundless intensity. The blood-red color of the bloom alludes to the passion of the sender.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition .

A single flower, with two velvety dark purple petals topping three mottled amber, mauve and white petals, each with faint stripes radiating from a central yellow matchhead, grows from a thin green stem gathered with four folded serrated green leaves. Small air bubbles shimmer like dew. Star-cut clear ground. Excellent condition.

28 Extremely rare antique Baccarat Type I pansy and buds bouquet with millefiori garland paperweight. Rarest of the Baccarat pansies, this particular example features two lush aubergine-capped yellow petals atop a trio of translucent cobalt blue petals, each with white arrow markings and a white cog edge, around a central star honeycomb complex cane. It is crowned by six aventurine green leaves and sits atop a thick aventurine green stem, shared by a sepal-swathed purple bud, two more aventurine leaves and an unfurling translucent blue and white cog-edged cane flower, with a honeycomb cane core. Red and white arrowhead canes alternated with white star complex canes to create a border garland for the bouquet. Star-cut clear ground. “A type I pansy, the rarest type, representing perhaps 1% of Baccarat pansies.” —Baccarat Paperweights.

29 Rare antique New England Glass Company buttercup on jasper paperweight. A white buttercup has a pink core, encircled by a white cup, followed by a yellow-over-white cup, inside its two concentric tiers of folded hollow petals, and is haloed by three green leaves and sits atop a short stem shared by two flanking leaves and a sheathed companion bud. Red and white jasper ground. “The New England Glass Company receives top honors for producing the buttercup paperweight, one of this factory’s rarer offerings.” —The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. 30 Exceptional antique Boston & Sandwich Glass Company red dahlia with aventurine paperweight. A superb dahlia has three tiers of seven pointed red petals around a central tier of transparent copper aventurine petals, all homing in on a central collared red and white rod bundle cane. The luxurious blossom is perched on a short olive-green stem, flanked by two green leaves, below a halo of five bright green leaves and adorned with air bubble dew drops. Clear ground. Pictured and discussed on page 61 of The Boston & Sandwich Glass Company. “The best examples have a top layer of translucent goldstone petals.” Fine condition.

31 Rare antique Saint Louis pink and blue clematis on green aventurine ground paperweight. A small flower, with five salmon-pink petals, each striped with a striking cobalt blue line, is centered by an orange complex cog cane and haloed by five bright green sepals as it sits in a dark green aventurine ground, encircled by a wide yet delicate red and white torsade. “In rare instances, the clematis appears on a deep green aventurine ground surrounded by a red and white or pink and white torsade.” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. “In French weights, especially from Saint Louis (where Nicholas Lutz worked), aventurine shows up as the softly sparkling green glass ground of a few rare flower weights...” —The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, pg. 14. 32 Extremely rare antique Mount Washington blue rose miniature paperweight. A very unusual small rendition of a blue rose from the factory has two tiers of blue petals, each folded at the tip into a white notch, around a dewy cobalt blue center with a lone yellow pistil. A pair of spaced mint-green leaves protrudes from behind the bloom along with a burgundy-tipped bud, all connected by tightly-wound yellow stems. Clear ground. Internal flaws.

35 Rare antique Baccarat enameled gold-foil red convolvulus and bud paperweight. A bright red convolvulus, with two dew drops dotting its throat, is joined by a companion bud on a stem with serrated green leaves, all in colored enamel over gold foil.

36 Antique Baccarat 1847 close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A close packed arrangement contains a signature/date cane among a colorful array of assorted complex canes, including shamrocks, fortresses, six-point stars, honeycombs, green leaves, whorls, trefoils and quatrefoils, as well as two different flower picture canes and the Gridel silhouettes of a pigeon, squirrel and dog. 39 Antique Baccarat interlaced millefiori trefoil garlands paperweight. A large blue and green arrowhead cane is ringed by red and white cog canes, inside two interlaced garlands of contrasting millefiori, one in blue and green arrowhead canes and the other in white and red stardust and bull’s-eye canes. A white star and red arrowhead complex cane dots each loop of the garlands. Clear ground. Excellent condition.

A central trefoil and quatrefoil complex cane is encircled by spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouette canes in two rings, including a goat, rooster, monkey, hunter, squirrel, lovebirds and a flower, along with six-pointed star and arrowhead canes. The canes rest on a cushion of white upset muslin and bits of colorful filigree. Signature/date cane. Good condition.

43 Uncommon antique Baccarat open concentric millefiori garland and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A red and white bull’s-eye, tightly ringed with white stars, presides at the center of a spaced circle of three green, blue, red and white complex star canes alternating with three variously colored Gridel canes, representing a dog, a goat and a rooster. A garland, in a pattern of stardust cane trios interrupted by either an arrowhead cane or a blue and pink complex canes frames the design. Clear ground. Fine condition.

A white flower, with five red-rimmed petals around a central star complex cane, perches on a sinuous stem flanked by two crenulated green leaves and sports a halo of four more green leaves and a red bud. A millefiori garland of alternating white cog and green cog canes encircles the bloom. Star-cut clear ground. Three tiers of ten side facets and one top facet. Excellent condition.

46 Uncommon antique Baccarat wallflower and forget-me-not bouquet with millefiori garland paperweight. A wallflower, with five red-rimmed white petals around a central green arrowhead cane, shares a sinuous stem with a white forget-me-not flower on one side and a crenulated leaf on the other side. 47 Rare antique Baccarat two-colored clematis and millefiori garland paperweight. A rare clematis specimen has a ring of five ribbed purple petals and an outer ring of white petals around a star honeycomb center cane. A sheathed red bud peers through the flower’s halo of five green leaves as it sits atop a steeply curved stem, flanked by two more leaves. A garland of alternating white cogs and blue arrowhead canes encircles the blossom. Star-cut clear ground.

A beautiful yellow pompon flower, with tiers of C-shaped petals, has a green arrowhead cane center and a halo of five crenulated green leaves. 219 Vandermark Merritt Glass Studios 1986 “Orchid” diatreta and insculpture paperweight, by Barry Sautner and Doug Merritt. An orchid, with leaves and roots, is carved inward into a three-dimensional masterpiece, called an insculpture, within a textured frosted surface, with a stylized wreath of stems, roots, five drooping buds and four flowers that have been expertly carved into several layers of opaque green, white and pink glass, an ancient technique called diatreta. Limited edition of 10. Signed/dated. Greek for “latticework”, diatreta carvings are created by removing glass from beneath the design and releasing forms, in this case flowers and leaves, from a vitreous mass while leaving behind a meticulous network of posts which binds the lattice to the original subject. This specimen is a sublime example of the techniques developed at the Vandermark Merritt studio.

Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bidder’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed and the winner determined. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the high bidder. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us of which lots you wish to drop. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to settle any disputes, determine bids, terminate accounts, remove and edit content, determine winners or cancel auctions at their sole discretion.

Bids must be made in the following increments:

Up to $200: $10

$200 to $500: $25

$500 to $1,000: $50

$1,000 to $2,000: $100

Reserves

$2,000 to $5,000: $250

$5,000 to $10,000: $500

$10,000 and over: $1,000

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Condition

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned separately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. A Buyer’s Premium of 20% will be applied to all forms of payment and an additional 3% will be applied to the total invoice as a processing fee for debit and credit card payments. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress and Discover cards, checks, cash, Zelle QuickPay and bank wire transfer payments. Bank wire transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer. No other forms of payment are accepted. All checks must be drawn from a U.S. bank and mailed to PO Box 127, Hadensville, VA 23067. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until full payment is received.

Shipping

Orders are shipped using USPS Priority Mail, with Signature Confirmation required for delivery, once full payment is received. Alternate shipping methods are available and will be billed at cost, if requested by the buyer. Tracking information will be provided. Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $22 for the first paperweight and $7 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $55 plus $7 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $85 plus $7 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping and insurance for over-sized items will vary according to size and weight. Buyers are responsible for providing a correct shipping address to L.H. Selman Ltd. and assume responsibility for undeliverable packages. Buyers are responsible for any additional fees required to take possession of the package.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

All lots are sold on an “as is” basis. L.H. Selman Ltd. makes every effort to describe each lot with complete accuracy and accepts responsibility for the authenticity of the items offered for auction.
