to a close, and so far, it has been a great year for PAPA members. I have been excited to see all the terrific aerial photography posted on PAPA Chat and social media. I have seen some great work, from photography of the much anticipated eclipse, to 360 degree panoramas, video productions, nighttime aerials, vertical mosaics, and everything in between. It is gratifying to see members try new things and strive for perfection, as this lifts and inspires the whole PAPA family.

This year we have had a great PAPACON 17 in San Francisco, and successful regionals in Portland and Pensacola. Many thanks to Niki, Debbie, and Amy for all their hard work in putting on these wonderful events. Allen and I attended the Portland regional and came away with some new ideas and the motivation to implement them. It was also nice to get to know some members that we hadn’t seen in a while. We had hoped for clear skies to do some flying and shooting, but the weather had other ideas. Not to worry, that gave us more time to talk shop, and share experiences. A good time was had by all.

On the national front, Hunter Harris has been representing PAPA in several UAS rule making groups in Washington, DC. PAPA is a respected member of the 26 Coalition*, the SAE** committee on Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operator Qualifications (there’s a mouthful), as well as being a part of the FAA ARC that created the Part 107 regulations. Our voice has been heard. With that in mind, please let me know of any concerns or comments that you might have about the current state of UAS operations and/or rules, and I will pass them on to Hunter. It is his assignment to represent PAPA at these meetings, so your input is important and requested.

An Equipment Review - HP Design Jet Z5600 Large Format Printer by Julie Belanger, 111th Aerials
Some people say having a large format printer in house is like printing money. Well, I had never had that experience with our old printer and I wasn’t sure I wanted to try again. But we took the plunge with the HP Design Jet Z5600 and I’m happy we did. If you are considering a large format printer for your business, I highly recommend the HP Z5600. We’ve been using the Z5600 for 8 months and we are extremely happy with the printer. The Z5600 is a six-ink printer that helps cut costs by reducing ink consumption. It seems to use ink in moderation without losing vibrancy and color. The colors are spot on with what we see on our calibrated monitors and being in control of colors is vital; we need the colors to be perfect and they are with the Z5600. While we use the printer mostly for photos, we ind we occasionally have a need to print out posters, signage and graphics. The Z5600 is perfect for that, too. At a recent event we were hired to shoot video. Because of the large number of people, 8000+, individual photo releases were out of the question. We were able to quickly print and post large and beautiful Crowd Release signage that we were ilming. The client was very happy. The printer measures more than 72 inches and arrives in a giant box. It is very easy to assembleIt’s basically in two parts. It will take two to lift and attach the printer to the base, but casters allow you to roll the printer easily into place once assembled.

Networking of the printer in our of ice proved to be easy and any one of our four computers on the network can send an image to print. HP has the DesignJet Click software that simpli ies printing with an effortless one-click, drag and drop interface. It works just as easily with iles from a PC or Mac and the software helps cut media costs with features like nesting and ile error warnings. Love it! The Z5600 holds two rolls of 44” paper and the easy to read LCD screen clearly instructs you how to load the paper as well as other information and instructions. Printing is fast and the quick-drying ink lets us roll or mount on Gatorboard in very short order. The cost of the Z5600 is on HP.com is $4495.99 with free shipping. One consideration that comes to mind is how quickly will I get enough work to pay it off and start making a pro it. We felt the same way, but it was (sort of) like the movie, “Field of Dreams” . . . If you get it, the work will come. We had our Z5600 for about a month. Then the magic happened: A customer we hadn’t heard from in years ordered 50 mounted prints. We only had four days to do it, with two of those four
days over a weekend. The Z5600 printed them out so easily & quickly; each one perfect: not a throwaway in the bunch. Luckily we had enough mounting boards to do this job. The total job came to nearly $5000. Had we not had the Z5600, we would have needed to outsource the printing and perhaps the mounting and the costs would have eaten substantially into our pro it and time. As it was we did everything in a weekend getting the customer his prints on time. Had we needed to outsource it we would have had to wait over the weekend AND we would have had to pay big RUSH fees… IF it could have been done at all.

Aerial photography is a rather small world. If we rock the boat people may get upset and it could easily become more difficult to get your work done if you are seen as one who doesn’t play well with others. So be sure to think before you speak or write. It is be er to use posi ve reinforcement than nega ve. A good analogy is in horseback riding where instructors will commonly remind students to “look where you want to go.” If a rider gets focused on the ground, being concerned they might fall, they actually increase the chance of falling. Our aim on PAPA Chat should be to stay coopera ve and produc ve to avoid falling into a trap of nega vity. To achieve the aim of maintaining a collegial atmosphere on PAPA Chat are three basic rules of e que e I would like to offer in brief: Be posiƟve. Always be encouraging in your posts on PAPA Chat. Some mes things don’t work out or you are otherwise unhappy with a PAPA colleague. Being nega ve about the situa on isn’t going to improve the situa on. A be er tack is to address the issue directly with the member or, if that doesn’t work, to approach a member of the PAPA Board to help. The PAPA Board does not mediate disputes, but from me to me we can hear both sides of an issue to work to suggest solu ons as professionals. Be courteous. We are all here to learn and develop our individual businesses, o en our methods overlap but they are not all the same. What works for you might not for others. It is helpful to make sugges ons based on your experience, but be sure to be respec ul in your sugges ons. Be helpful. This is where PAPA is, as a group, the strongest already. Often people have an issue in Photoshop or are trying to figure out a way to get a job photographed. In short order, our fellow PAPA members are there to provide suggestions. PAPA has an amazing breadth and depth of experience and knowledge about cameras, computers, programs, and a wide range of aircraft from airplanes to helicopters and now unmanned aircraft. We do amazing work every day and it is always a pleasure to see us not only creating that work but helping our fellow PAPA members to produce better imagery. HARVEST
The theme for this cover competition was HARVEST. We were looking for an impressive image that would be suitable for promotional materials, advertising, or as a planning tool in the ag industry. The entries beautifully showed the season of change and I want to thank everyone that entered.
Cover Photo: “Red Gold” by Dave Sievert, Airphoto Designs, Santa Cruz, CA, david@airphotodesigns.com I was returning from a photo ϔlight in the Stockton-central San Joaquin Valley area and I thought I would ϔly south among the many agricultural ϔields in search of an image for the next PAPA cover. About 20 miles into the leg near Patterson I saw a farm with these bright orange/red rows and headed over to see what it was. I did a couple of orbits snapping off a couple of dozen frames and headed home. After searching Google maps, I found that this farm produces sun-dried tomatoes and thus the acres of red. “Fresh tomatoes are placed on trays and treated in smoking rooms with sulphur dioxide to retain color and nutrients and more importantly to keep birds and insects away from the drying ϔield. They sit in the 20 acre drying ϔield for 7-10 days then are moved to cold storage and the packing process. It takes 20-22 pounds of fresh tomatoes to produce 1 pound of sun-dried tomatoes.” It is always an honor to make a PAPA Views cover.

The 2017 version covers 12 acres. La Union is a tiny farming community located on NM 28 between Anthony, TX and Mesilla, NM. It is known for its pecans, cotton and chile… and every Autumn......The Corn Maze. Kind of redundant. Like shrimp scampi. Maze is Spanish for corn.

It is the moisture content of the corn which initiates the harvest. The harvested corn is stored in silos with well controlled environments and used to feed the growing chicken industry.

Western Regional Conference
Notes from The Western Regional by Debbie Cruikshank PAPA Western Regional Director I want to thank everyone who joined us for the Western Regional Conference held in Portland, Oregon in September! Thanks for the efforts everyone made to get here. I know many people had to make last minute changes to their travel plans because the local forest ires had Portland engulfed in smoke which interfered with people lying themselves in. I think Wayne was the only one that made it lying himself and some didn’t make it at all. We had a great turnout with 15 members plus some spouses & family members. We had a fun time together conversing, focusing and learning. We learned about design principles & elements from Debbie’s slide presentation. Todd Quam gave a spectacular presentation on ground photography. He walked us through setting up that perfect shot, landing those the ideal ground customers and he shared an equipment list for creating your own elevated photography platform. We also had a little show & tell session where Todd gave a live demonstration on how to use the Tilt Shift lens, Stan Macbean brought out his OSMO and David Wyatt demonstrated his handheld stabilizer for a DSLR camera.

Western Regional Conference Last but not least we had Erica Thomas of The Works Progress Studio lead a workshop on Branding and creating your identity. She led us through a workshop critiquing various PAPA members websites, and thank you to those that were willing to participate! Everyone loved Erica’s talk so much that we decided not to have the photo critique session. I had a great time and I got the feeling that most everyone had a great time especially when we took the train downtown for dinner. I can’t wait to do it again next year! Thanks again to all the attendees and I also want to thank all of you that helped this newbie conference planner; your help is greatly appreciated!! Eastern Regional Conference
Notes from The Eastern Regional by Amy Hartsfeld PAPA Eastern Regional Director This year’s Eastern Regional Conference held in Pensacola Florida, did not disappoint! Our small but mighty group engaged in stimulating presentations on the subjects of Branding, Government Contracting, and Business Growth; thoughtful round table discussions on policies, procedures, and daily practices in our businesses; and interactive demonstrations with drones. As is typical with PAPA members, we all learned from each other, as well as, outside professional sources who are experts in their respective ields. We had a pre-conference option to attend a Blue Angels practice followed by a visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum. Amy Harts ield, Yvonne Sanderson, Mark Sanderson, and Kent Larson thoroughly enjoyed the Blue Angels on a picture-perfect day (a little warm) but beautiful non-the-less. Hunter Harris arrived in time to meet us at the museum for lunch at the Cubi Bar and Restaurant followed by self-guided touring of the huge, two level facility. By the end of the day, some of us (see photo) were worn out! Marty Sellers arrived in the late afternoon and he and Chip Mapoles joined us for dinner at a Pensacola favorite restaurant – The Fish House. Ron Jarmon arrived early in the morning the next day, and we all went to the of ices of Pelican Drones where we learned some great tricks of the trade in drone photography and videography from owner Chris Tonn. This session included a conference room presentation and open discussion; followed by a drone technique demonstration outside on yet another stunning day! We also got to explore his equipment storage closet where he showed us all of the extra gadgets and specialty items he uses to work his magic. Chris and his assistant then joined us for lunch at Jaco’s Restaurant for outside dining on Pensacola Bay and the PAPA members got to pick his brain over lunch.

Eastern Regional Conference That afternoon we went to Amy’s home base airstrip (up in the country) and visited Mapoles Aviation followed by a trip to the world headquarters of Amy & Company, Inc. McGuire’s Irish Pub is a “must visit” restaurant in Pensacola, so off we went for dinner. The last conference day was held at the hotel. Shane Mapoles, Creative Specialist and cofounder of Embark Agency got us up to speed on the role that Branding plays in marketing your business. Our very own Wendy Whittemore of Aerial Innovations of TN, KY, AL led us in some thought provoking discussions on How to Grow Your Business. We talked about hiring employees -vs- outsourcing, or using a combination of the two. We also talked about ways to engage new cilents and retain their loyalty over time. And the inal speaker of the day was Jane Dowgwillo, Statewide Manager for the Florida Small Business Development Center Network’s Procurement Technical Assistance Center. How’s that for a title? Jane explained all of the free services they provide and told the attendees how to ind the SBDC closest to them. She also navigated several online websites and showed us how we can ind what government contracts are out there for bid, and even historical data on who has been awarded contracts in the past along with the monetary value. We inished the inal session with enough time to get to the Pensacola Beach and put our feet in the sand before sunset. Our inal dinner together was at Crab’s – On the Beach restaurant located, well….. right on the beach. Wendy’s husband, Roger Helms joined us for this great meal. A wonderful time was had by all! by John Mooney Living on a private airport is an adventure. Our airport is located about 40 miles to the west of Houston, but with major growth on the far west side of the city going strong, it seems like we have moved our business to where the action is. Business has been very good for us since the move. When we ϔirst relocated our ofϔice, we were concerned that we might be isolating ourselves from our customers, but because most of our business is conducted over the internet, it has not become a problem. Some of our customers even come out to visit us on a regular basis. I suspect that it is a veiled attempt on their part to get out of the ofϔice, although they say they are researching the area for potential opportunities. Living on an airport has opened up an entirely new awareness on my part. Not only do we hangar and ly photo missions from our new home, we have become actively involved in the management and upkeep of the airport and its runways and taxiways. One recent project allowed us to marry our love of aerial photography with a major maintenance project scheduled for the airport. In early 2017 the homeowners association decided to re-surface the 3500 foot asphalt runway. I was the chairman of the committee responsible for the planning and execution of this project. Early on, the members of that committee decided that they wanted to play an active role in the entire process, and do a lot of the work themselves. We used aerial photography as one of the tools for inspection, initial planning and execution of the project. The project was broken down into several smaller and more manageable tasks, with the irst being the cleaning and repair of damaged areas of the runway. Over the years, the asphalt had developed cracks that needed
illing. Using a drone to assist in the inspection of the runway, we identi ied areas that needed special attention. The resulting photography was then used to prepare an estimate for materials needed and to guide the workers to the repair areas without having to search.
The second phase was to resurface the runway with sealcoat. Aerial photography was once again used to help identify areas that could use extra coating to protect from standing water or excessive wear from landing aircraft. The third and inal stage was to paint and mark the runway and taxiway. The FAA has reams of documents on how this should be done, but none really applied to our small airport’s runways and taxiways. We used aerial photography to help visualize and scale what the inal marking plan should be. With that plan
in hand, we went to work. Dee Ann got involved in providing stencils for the runway numbers. After creating a template on the computer, we printed out “to size” prints with our wide format printer of each number. Those prints were then used as a pattern to cut vinyl stencils to be used in the inal painting process.
The entire community got behind the DIY aspect of the project and everyone enjoyed being part of the team. We would gather on the runway early on a Saturday morning, eat doughnuts, assign duties, and perform the necessary tasks. Yes, living on a private airport with neighbors who love aviation, care about their community, and pitch in to make things better is a dream come true for us.

PAPA’s 2018 Conference NEW PAPA PRINT COMPETITION AWARD IN MEMORY OF JIM WARK When you enter the 2018 PAPA Print Compe on, you will have the opportunity to have your entry or entries judged for the new Jim Wark Award. Jim Wark was one of the finest aerial photographers in the world. As it is referred in avia on lexicon, Jim flew west in June 2015 passing away at the age of 84. Jim was a modest mentor to his friends and colleagues in PAPA guiding and advising to always shoot for your best. With this new award, he will con nue to be an inspira on to aerial photographers. John Wark, Jim’s son, an excellent aerial photographer in his own right, will administer this unique segment of the Print Compe on. John will judge the entries on three criteria: It should be a photo the photographer likes The photo may or may not fit into the PAPA print compe on’s normal judging criteria or categories And most important, the photo should have a connec on with the photographer’s moment in place and me. Each entry will need to be accompanied by a wri en narra ve describing the above. Every year we honor those among us who have earned their Master Aerial Photographer Designation. The Masters Award is the highest award that can be earned by a member of PAPA International. To qualify for this award, the individual must illustrate a well-rounded knowledge of Aerial Photography. The award is earned, based upon the accumulation of points for various activities and participation within PAPA International. The Masters Award Program is part of PAPA’s on-going commitment to the promotion of high standards within the aerial photography business. Points towards the Master Award are accumulated by PAPA members demonstrating exceptional photographic skill, and by actively participating in the PAPA organization. PAPA’S 2nd Annual Prints With A Purpose Charity Auction Takes Off The Second Annual “Prints with a Purpose” Charity Auction will again play a big role at the 2018 PAPA conference in Charleston, SC Feb 15-17. Prints with a Purpose brings together contributions of our members’ photographic art with the generous support of Corporate Partner HP, Inc with all money raised from an online auction going to charity. “The 2017 auction raised more than $7000 for the The Noreen Macbean Children’s Center and we have hopes that the 2018 auction will yield even more for the charity. As before, the prints will be auctioned through CharityAuctionsToday.com, an online and mobile bidding site giving PAPA’s Prints with Purpose the greatest chance to reach the widest audience possible. At least 50 images will be selected from the entries in the 2018 PAPA print competition to be part of the auction. These images will be printed as 24” x 36” prints by HP, Inc. on an HP large format printer such as the Z5600. Each print is rolled, boxed and ready to take home from the conference or mail to the winning bidder. PAPA members entering the print competition DO NOT need to donate their image for the Prints with Purpose auction. It is only with the maker’s permission that a print will be auctioned off for the charity. However, photographer’s should note, that prints selected to be part of the auction are prominently shown on the auction site and the maker is identified with a link going back to the maker’s website. The auction will go live about 10 days prior to the end of the PAPA Charleston Conference with the results announced during the Feb. 17 Saturday Night Awards Banquet. Any photograph that goes unsold at the auction may be purchased at the conference banquet with proceeds going to the charity.
Plan To Be a Part of PAPA’s Prints With a Purpose PAPA has again chosen that the recipient charity of the 2018 Prints with a Purpose Auction will be the Noreen Macbean Children’s Center in Santa Lucia, Honduras Noreen Macbean was married to Allen Macbean, an active member of PAPA and owner with his father, Stan Macbean of Photographic Solutions in Orem, Utah. Noreen was a beautiful young woman who was a dear friend to many in our association. At 37, she was tragically killed in a biking accident in 2015. In her lifetime, Noreen always had a compassion for children. In her memory, her family established the Noreen Macbean Children’s Center in Santa Lucia, Honduras. The Center has grown to provide much needed space and equipment for training in micro-enterprises such as sewing. Noreen’s Center is part of the Hope for Honduran Children’s Foundations which is a 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to providing education and housing to orphaned and abandoned boys in one of the most disadvantaged countries in the world. The Foundation works to protect, serve, educate and mentor neglected youth, providing them the knowledge and skills that will enable them to support themselves and improve their villages. Noreen is dearly missed and this portion of the conference will be a way for all of us at PAPA to honor and remember our friend. The Noreen Macbean Training Center in Honduras I would like to again sincerely thank everyone who participated in last year’s Prints with a Purpose Charity Auction. The money brought in has made a huge impact at the Noreen Macbean Training Center in Honduras! We were able to secure a full-time instructor for the year, buy much needed supplies including sewing machines and fabric, and we moved into a much more modern building with reliable electricity and a bigger space – which we’ve already outgrown. The boys at the Casa Noble home, a home for high school aged abandoned and orphaned boys, love the center. A few of the boys have to be physically removed each night because they are so engrossed in their sewing projects. Your incredibly generous donations have gone a long way to helping the boys learn a skill that will enable them to earn a living, start a business, or support themselves as they get further education. The center is growing fast, and with the funds from last year’s Prints with a Purpose Charity Auction, combined with other donations, we are planning on taking over the building next door that is currently under construction. With both buildings, starting in January, we are going to be able to offer not only sewing instruction but we’re also buying more computers and we’ll start teaching computer programming and web design, as well as English classes for the boys and members of the community. We’re also working with the Business college at Utah Valley University to create a business and entrepreneurial training program that will be taught with pre-recorded training videos and supported by Business and MBA students weekly through live video conferencing. The first set of videos introducing business and entrepreneurial ideas is complete, and the next set of videos going into more detail will be finished at the end of the current semester. The big idea is to be able to teach the boys a productive skill, and then give them the knowledge to use that skill to start their own business if they choose, or to be a beneficial asset in an existing business. The Noreen Macbean Center will also be starting it’s own business early next year selling the required school uniforms the boys are learning to make to other charitable organizations who will donate them to school children throughout Honduras. English classes will also be offered to the general community, and the money from these endeavors will go towards making the center self-sufficient, and creating a fund for the boys at the center to use for seed money to start their own businesses or help pay for additional education. We have big goals this next year for the Noreen Macbean Center, as well as for our partner, The Hope for Honduran Children Foundation. I cannot express in words the gratitude the boys have shown me for your help. Because of you, they now have a hope for a real future and the ability to escape the cycle of poverty that their friends and families have suffered through for generations. We are making a real difference in their lives, and we want to be able to help even more children in Honduras, and we can’t do that without your help! Greetings PAPA People, It’s Niki, your dedicated Vice President of Programs, here to tell you why you absolutely MUST attend PAPACON 2018! As most of you know, next year’s conference will be held in beautiful and historic Charleston, South Carolina; a irst time for PAPA. As your new-ish VP of programs, I have been working hard to plan conferences that are not only fun, but educational. I feel like our event in San Francisco was extremely successful, but I think we can do better! Our Charleston event will have group dinners, a helicopter photoshoot, print competition and 2nd annual Prints with a Purpose Charity Fundraiser, awards banquet and more! Along with seminars on pricing, marketing, and emerging technology, members can look forward to a few new and exciting topics: PAPA will be welcoming ϐirst time conference attendee Jean-Luc Kaiser PAPA member from France! How many long-time PAPA members remember Julieanne Kost, the Adobe Systems Principle Evangelist? For those that are unfamiliar, Julieanne used to frequent our conferences and put on amazing Photoshop seminars for our members. Unfortunately for us at PAPA, Julieanne became SO popular that she was no longer able to attend our conferences. She was out traveling the world sharing her expertise with big time companies and groups. Her absence has been evident at PAPA as I’ve had multiple requests from our membership DEMANDING Julieanne! Well, I am here to tell you all that after months of perseverance, compliments and groveling, Julieanne will be joining us in Charleston to put on not one, but two seminars on Photoshop and Lightroom!
