Five tips for pleasing teachers
By KAITLYN RENNIE HEN it comes to the physical wellbeing of our youth while also teaching them, IkiFit is already breaking records as a sports educator. An actual World Record attempt involving thousands of students from across the region is another rung up the ladder of excellence. Founder of the modern exercise concept Kim Macrae is trying to create the World Record for ‘the most people doing an iKi Energiser in multiple locations at the same time’ or the ‘BIG iKi’ with the first attempt made on November 5. And when it comes to this area of knowledge, Kim certainly knows what he is doing. After years of struggling to get students engaged in his high school classroom, he found the answer. “I was a high school teacher and a martial arts instructor,� he explains. “I wanted to come up with something different while introducing people to exercise without it actually being exercise,� he said. iKiFit was born. It is an activity which engages the mind, body, heart and imagination while helping ‘truants become university students, disengaged kids become student leaders and unmotivated workers become great team members.’

Since its establishment in 2002, iKiFit has spread to preschools, disability schools, primary and high schools from Sydney to Lightning Ridge, Wagga Wagga, Bourke, Coonabarabran, Brewarrina, Parkes, Condobolin, and everywhere in between. iKiFit has, and continues, to show students and members of the community leadership skills, while participating in active exercise through the modern delivery method of the internet in classrooms across the region. ship of your own actions. With the World Record now within Kim’s reach, he is hoping to not only get schools involved, but also businesses and organisations. It is perceived that more than 3000 participants in schools, offices, gyms and homes will be doing the same activity at the same time, which Kim hopes to improve annually. “It is accredited training, we have spent a lot of time certifying it and evaluating it. WHEN children love their teachers, parents often want to give them a gift at Christmas time as a token of their appreciation. The question is what to give that will please them. Here are a few tips for choosing the perfect gift for a teacher. 1. Decorations and candles are to be avoided. As pretty as they are, you don’t know how a teacher’s house is decorated. So there’s a good chance that your present won’t be suitable or ever used. Even worse, imagine 20 students arriving with a decoration or a scented candle! 2. One mug too many. A mug seems like a good idea at first, but have you thought about all the other parents who had the same idea over the years of this teacher’s career? 3. Chocolate: be careful of allergies. Chocolate is a good choice because it doesn’t last long and won’t clutter the teacher’s life. What’s more, it can be shared among friends and family on Christmas Eve. Be sure to choose chocolates that don’t contain traces of peanuts or other nuts, as you never know who has severe nut allergies. 4. Impersonal gifts. Avoid overly personal gifts such as clothing, perfumes, or cosmetics. Opt for an all-purpose type of gift, such as a gift certificate from a bookstore, a bottle of sparkling juice, or a bottle of wine – even if the teacher doesn’t drink, it’s always useful during the holidays. 5. Some well-chosen words. Teachers are sometimes embarrassed at receiving a huge pile of gifts from their students. Some much prefer to receive a card with a message from parents and children expressing appreciation and care. Compliments always give pleasure.
Create a cosy bedroom EVERYONE would love to have a cosy bedroom that promises relaxation and a good sleep. A bedroom should be a soothing space where you can get some well-deserved rest and a peaceful night. The key to a good bedroom decor is a harmonious blend of materials, colours, patterns, and lighting. Natural wood furniture and flooring with soft area rugs offer a combination of smooth and fluffy textures, which is always easy on the eyes. You could even be daring and add touches of fur, lace, and wool. These materials are unusual, but they give cosy appeal to a room. Be particularly careful when choosing the furniture, flooring, bedspread, and window coverings; make sure they add warmth to the decor. For example, a padded headboard gives a comfortable look, and cushions and welcoming throws are inviting for a comfy lay-down. Another great way to add warmth to a room is to use curtains or drapes that fall from ceiling to floor and cover the entire width of the wall.

No longer just a weekend activity in which participants run around and shoot paintfilled balls at one other, the game has now reached the realm of fully-fledged competition sport. Representatives from all areas of Australia and New Zealand, including Dubbo’s The Players Club (TPC) now battle it out for major prizes and TPC has three teams involved. Local player and TPC representative Mark Graham explained paintball’s transition from recreational pastime to serious sport. “Paintball is not just for shooting mates at their buck’s parties or anything,” he pointed out. “It is actually a sport.” There are several tournaments across NSW, including the upcoming Super Sevens, Total War, and the Ultimate Paintball Series. Apparently, Australia has been little bit slow in catching on to the paintball as a sport trend. “It’s a growing sport here in Australia, but huge in Europe and the States,” Mark said. Although Australia has a few teams that travel to South East Asia for paintball tournaments, individuals from America and Europe fly across the globe to join Australia’s biggest paintball tournament, the Super Sevens, held at Action Paintball in Rouse Hill. Some of the big guns from around the world have now arrived in Sydney to participate in the quarterly event.

Stuffed breakfast potatoes ARE some of your guests going to stay the night after your Christmas party? Here is a simple and easy recipe that makes a nice change from the traditional eggs and bacon breakfast. Simply adjust the ingredients according to the number of guests and depending on the size of the potatoes. Hint: it’s best to cook the potatoes the day before. INGREDIENTS (Serves 6) • 6 potatoes (thick-skinned and long and flattish) • 12 slices of cheese, about 30g each (choose a flavourful cheese that melts well, such as cheddar or aged Gouda) • 6 small slices of ham • 12 slices bacon • 6 medium eggs (choose large eggs or extra-large if your potatoes are very big) • 3 green onions, finely chopped • Salt and pepper PREPARATION 1. The day before, wash potatoes and bake at 180°C for about 75 minutes or until tender. Be careful not to pierce skins when checking if they’re cooked. Baking an extra potato just in case is a good idea. Leave to cool. 2. In the morning, carefully cut top off each potato and remove as much flesh as possible with a spoon. Again, it is important not to tear or puncture skin. The goal is to retain the boat shape of the potatoes in order to stuff them. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C. 4. Place a slice of ham and cheese in each of the hollowed potatoes. 5. Distribute half of the green onions to the potatoes and gently break an egg into each one. Salt and pepper to taste. Cover egg with another slice of cheese and two slices of bacon, placed lengthwise. 6. Place in oven. Cook about 20 minutes for a well-cooked egg yolk. This is also the time it will take for the bacon to crisp. For a soft yolk, cook about 12 minutes, but the bacon will have to be cooked in a pan for a few minutes first. 7. Top with remaining green onions and serve.

Fires spark rural warning By NATALIE HOLMES FTER a spate of grassfires in the region, NSW Rural Fire Service Orana operations officer Laurie Douglas has firmly advised residents to ‘be careful’ this summer. Warm spring conditions, areas of high fuel density, combined with unpredictable stormy weather and the early harvest season provided a volatile mix, particularly in the rural sector. “It’s necessary for farmers to be able to look at their own fire safety, the conditions and vehicle maintenance,” Laurie said. “My advice is be care-

ful. Have your own firefighting unit set up. That is so much better.” Laurie pointed out that many of the firefighters involved in the Rural Fire Service are volunteers who have been busy with their own harvest and fire management activities. He said it was a good idea for others to do the same. “I would just like for people to be a little more careful when it comes to maintain and servicing vehicles as is the ability to control a fire on your own,” he said. The bush fire season: THE bush fire season generally commences on October 1 and concludes on March 31. Prevailing weather conditions associated with the bush fire season in the Orana Bush Fire Management Committee area are north to westerly winds created by consecutive high pressure systems, causing high daytime temperatures. Such hot winds are usually very dry with low relative humidity, often going below 20 per cent. The Orana Bush Fire Management Committee area has, on average 250 fires per year, of which 10-15 can be considered to be major fires. The mother of all doors: the garage door
The right choice A garage door represents up to 30 per cent of your home’s frontage. It is therefore extremely important that it blends with the overall style of the house. Wooden doors are perfect for country-style houses; coated or embossed steel doors blend well with conventional styles; and aluminium doors with transparent, matte, coloured, or frosted glass options are ideal for a modern look. There are two main types of doors on the market. Up-andover garage doors are available with a canopy gear or retract-
able gear mechanism. These doors come in one piece and roll on rails towards the ceiling. Then there are sliding doors, whose panels slide on rails, either on the ceiling or wall. Square, rectangular, or arched windows can be added to all these models. You just have to match the colour and texture of the windows to the house, according to your taste. Another aspect that should not be overlooked is the door’s insulation. It helps to keep a stable temperature in the garage and also increases the insulation of adjacent rooms.
Proper maintenance A thorough inspection of the garage door should be done once a year. Open and close the garage door manually so that a broken wheel or misaligned panel, which usually results in friction on the rails, will be more obvious. This exercise will also allow you to check the tension in
the springs. Any misalignment of this type prevents the door from remaining at a standstill when it is ajar and makes it very heavy to lift. Such a problem puts a strain on the door’s motor and shortens its lifespan. At the same time, check the solidity of the door’s anchorage and assembly. And don’t forget to take a look at the weather stripping; it should follow the contour of the door perfectly. The next step is to lubricate all moving parts of the door hardware, track, and weather stripping with silicone oil; avoid petroleum-based products. These parts should also be washed, along with the door panels, using a mild soap such as that used for cars. Adjusting the lifting system of a garage door (springs, cables, and other parts) is a delicate task with certain inherent dangers. If you decide to tackle the job yourself, be sure to purchase parts that are marketed

Organising a home office HESE days, many people feel an increasing need to have a work area at home. Ideally, a spare room would be used for this purpose. If that is not possible, setting aside an area in a bedroom, in a basement, or on the main floor will do, as long as it’s quiet. The first step is to ask yourself what the office will be used for. Is it for business purposes, or is it just a place to take care of emails and do paperwork or school work? Deciding on the purpose of the space will help you determine the furniture and equipment you need to look for, such as a filing cabinet, cupboards, bookcase, desktop or laptop computer, desk, and storage space. Make sure the lighting is adequate. The window should be at the side of the computer screen, not behind or in front of it, as reflections or glare can reduce screen visibility. Choose a comfortable office chair on casters, and preferably one with armrests and an adjustable backrest. If necessary, use a footrest to help you adopt a good posture. For better concentration, the colour of the walls should not be too loud. Lastly, don’t forget that an efficient office has everything close at hand, including pencils, stapler, paper clips, reference books, and a printer. Now all that’s left to do is add your personal touch to the decor. You could hang a few pictures here and there, or put up some shelves on which you can display trinkets or useful office items. The important thing is that you feel comfortable in this place where you will soon be spending a lot of time.

Style Firstly, let the overall style of your home guide you. If the house has a rustic look, you may want to opt for windows with small panes. If your house has stone siding and natural materials prevail, you’ll probably prefer wood. And lastly, if you have a modern home, you’ll probably want to focus on metallic or coloured finishes. comes in the form of a low-emissivity film, which lets the sun’s rays in but prevents heat from escaping. You should also check the spacers that separate the two or three panes of glass. The spacers surround the windows and make them waterproof. It is important to ensure that they have low conductivity, or, in other words, that they are non-metallic. These inserts help to reduce condensation at the bottom of the windows and prevent the glass from becoming excessively cold. Weather-stripping seals both doors and windows against rain and dust and minimises air leaks in moving joints.

Richly textured solid wood flooring OTHING can beat that good old classic for covering your floors: solid wood. Its attractive and distinctive finish provides a warm atmosphere and creates a pleasant living environment. Although this type of flooring can be made from hardwood (oak, ash, birch, beech), softwood (e.g. pine) is popular in old houses and is more affordable.
