We truly live by our mission statement that says ‘We are committed to a customer relationship built on integrity and dependability. The relationship is the foundation of attaining mutual success.’

This comittment has been passed down from John and Ted van Zanten to their children from day one and still lives on today to each family member, as well as our dedicated group that make up our wonderful and talented team.

We thank John, Ted and their wives for the sacrifices they made in building this foundation that has made Pan Am an industry leader.

SPRING 2024

First and foremost, we would like to thank you for another successful season and truly appreciate your business. With Covid now in the rear view mirror, we know we are coming out the other side stronger and wiser. We have certainly learned a great deal from the pandemic. Not the least of which is that gardening has become a new passion and hobby for many. Whether planting fruits and vegetables, creating new landscapes or adding containers to a patio, our new and returning gardeners are loving this rewarding and healthy lifestyle. While many industries have seen the ‘Covid Bump’ subside and their volumes have returned to prepandemic levels, the gardening industry continues to see increased demand.

With what we have learned since Covid in early 2020, we are constantly updating tagging and ‘easy to grow’ variety selections to make sure the novice gardening has 100% success and confidence with our plants.

We look forward to the opportunity of working with you in 2024.

Hosta Collection - A (Plantain Lily)

MADE FOR THE SHADE!

These shade perennials thrive in low light, and best of all, they get better with age. As members of the lily family, they are hardy, easy to grow and care for.

Gardeners turn to hostas when they are looking for good shade perennials, but most cultivars actually do better if they get a little sun. Early morning sun and filtered shade in the afternoon seem to be ideal. The gold and green types and many variegated varieties do need some sun to develop good leaf colour.

Hardy Fern Collection

A wonderful collection of shade loving and hardy ferns!

Whether you have a secluded pond or a serene woodland setting, you will find that an assortment of ferns will add beauty to any spot in the garden. Most ferns do well in partial shade or dappled sunlight, but there are many which will do well with quite a bit of sun, provided they get enough water. Shade loving ferns appreciate organic, evenly moist, well drained soil. If your soil is heavy with clay or sand you can add compost or other organic matter to help balance it out. (If you use manure, be sure it is well rotted or aged.)

Ferns require minimal maintenance throughout the year. Once in the garden, ferns in general do not require additional fertilizer. They will appreciate leaf litter from surrounding trees and an occasional top dressing of a compost mulch.

AMAZING CONTRAST AND COLOUR IMPACT WHEN PLANTED TOGETHER!

Concorde (dwarf) Aurea Nana Rosy Glow Ruby Carousel Photo: Berberis ‘Concorde’

The coarse green foliage of these fast-growing shrubs is covered in late spring through fall with deep rich flowers. Performs well in shady areas. Virtually pest free and disease resistant, maintenance of hydrangeas won't cut in on your garden enjoyment. Hydrangeas are a beautiful accent plant when set amongst other shrubs. Addition of aluminum sulfate intensifies the rich blue colour of ‘Nikko Blue’ and ‘All Summer Beauty’.

How to Adjust Hydrangea Colour!

Hydrangeas may produce pink, blue, or lavender blooms, depending on where it’s planted and how it’s fed. The presence of aluminum in the plant ultimately determines the colour, and pH affects the uptake of aluminum. Alkaline soils, pH of 6.0 or more, are more likely to produce pink blooms, and more acidic soils, pH 4.5 to 5.5, produce blue flowers.

Pink hydrangeas can be turned blue by applying aluminum sulfate to lower the pH and add aluminum to the soil. Applying lime to raise the pH level will help blue hydrangeas turn pink. If your soil naturally produces very blue or very pink hydrangea flowers, you may need to grow your hydrangeas in containers or raised beds to achieve the desired colour. If you do attempt to change the colour of your blooms by adding these minerals, dilute them well, and add sparingly. It is very easy to scorch your plants by adding too much. White hydrangeas are not affected by efforts to change bloom colour.

Zones 3-10

This spectacular collection of clematis vines includes only the best in colour, vigor, and hardiness. Known as ‘Queen of the Vines’, clematis produce wonderful blooms on healthy foliage.

Clematis are long-lived perennial vines and they have an important role to play in any flower garden. As they scramble up trellises, climb over arbors and thread themselves through other plants, clematis weave a rich tapestry of colour and texture.

Growing tip: Clematis don’t like to be moved, so choose the planting site carefully. The ideal location will have well drained soil that’s rich and loamy. If possible, find a spot where the root zone will stay relatively cool. In most cases, you can count on nearby plants to shade the soil. If the planting area is more open, plan to mulch the soil with shredded leaves or compost, keeping the mulch a few inches away from the stems.

The assorted berries in this collection are all extremely winter hardy and easy to grow.

Blackberry (Thornless) produces medium-to-large, round, deep black very sweet berries.

Boysenberry Huge berries with outstanding flavour! This plant produces juicy, deep purple berries that can grow to be over an inch long and an inch around. Boysenberries have blackberry, raspberry, and loganberry in their parentage. Delectable when eaten fresh and famously used for outstanding jams and jellies.

Currants are prized for their distinctive flavour in juice, jam, jelly, pies, and other desserts.

Goji Berry Often consumed in their dehyrated form, a goji berry tastes a lot like a sour cranberry, with a nearly imperceptible sweetness. The texture of dried goji berries is a cross between chewy craisins and a fleshy, dried apricot. Fresh goji berries are difficult to find, but are delicious raw, or in juices, jams and sauces.

Gooseberries are a hardy northern fruit that are a favourite for jams and tarts. Their distinctive sweet-sour flavour also works well in pies.

Jostaberry A gooseberry and currant cross! The rich berry taste is reminiscent of gooseberry with a kiss of black currant. Deep-red, almost-black fruit is high in vitamin C and forms in large clusters. Ideal for juices, jams, jellies, and fresh-eating. Cold-hardy plants are long-lived, thornless, and productive once established.

Loganberry A red raspberry-blackberry cross. Large, dark, wine-red berries ripen from July to September. It is a vigourous, trailing plant that is thornless and easy to grow. A favourite for making syrup, preserves and desserts.

Cupid is a hardy deciduous hybrid shrub variety of dwarf cherry released in the Romance Series from the University of Saskatchewan. Cupid produces the largest fruit of all the dwarf cherries which is a dark red and is perfect for fresh eating. Although sour is in their name, they can be surprisingly sweet when harvested at the right stage of ripeness. Grows well as a bushy hedge as well as pruned into a single-trunked tree.

Dwarf Cherry Collection (Prunus cerasus)

This wonderful series of Dwarf cherries has been recently released by the University of Saskatchewan. We have chosen three of the sweetest eating varieties: Cupid, Romeo and Juliet. The story behind these is fascinating, and spans nearly 70 years of trials, tests, and selections by various plant breeders.

The trees don't get very big -- typically 2-2.5m (6-8 feet) tall. They fit small yards, and you can pick most of the fruit from the ground. Yields are typically 2-3 ice cream pails per tree, or 20-25 lbs. Dwarf sour cherries have a lot going for them. They are cold hardy to zone 2, with a fruit flavour that’s sweet, and great for fresh eating (unlike standard sour cherries). The shape is extremely compact like a bush, and therefore easy to harvest. Come spring, a dwarf sour cherry bush is absolutely stunning. They flower slightly before leafing out, so they look like a cloud of blossoms.

All varieties are self pollinating!

Our sweetest, tastiest dwarf cherry yet.

Romeo is a hardy deciduous hybrid shrub variety of dwarf cherry released in the Romance Series from the University of Saskatchewan. Sweet enough for fresh eating, but with enough tartness to make perfect pies! Romeo Dwarf Cherry tree grows 2-2.5m (6-8 ft.) tall, making it easy to prune and harvest. The juicy, deep crimson, glossy cherries have a complex, sweet-tart flavour and high flesh-to-pit ratio. Yielding up to 25 lbs. of fruit per tree.

Our teams across the country are always striving to do their part in teaching the many benefits of gardening to both young and old.

Children who garden learn responsibility, patience, perseverance, and how to deal with disappointment if the garden doesn't grow the way they expected.

Children can learn new skills, have fun, play and develop self-confidence by spending time in the garden tending plants and growing their own flowers and food. Most children enjoy being outdoors and love digging in the soil, getting dirty, creating things and watching plants grow.

Our Niagara-on-the-Lake manager Alexander van Barneveld teaching a young class the benefits of gardening. They each get an easy-to-grow boxwood to plant at home and care for.
