When Celebrity Cruises first dipped their toes in the waters of expedition cruising, it was with a brand-new outlook. In the current age of widespread cruise enthusiasm, it’s pretty difficult to make an announcement that shakes up the entire industry, but last year Celebrity Cruises did just that when they disclosed their imminent expansion into the world of river cruising. Alongside the declaration was the unveiling of the first two ships: Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker, launching in August and October 2027 respectively.
Beyond this, travellers can look forward to the 2028 launches of Celebrity Wanderer, Celebrity Roamer and Celebrity Boundless, followed by two as yet unnamed ships in 2029 and a sprinkling of others in subsequent years, ultimately bringing Celebrity to their target of 20 river ships by 2031.
One need only glance at the sales stats to see just how well this news was received, with pre-sale selling out in a recordbreaking six minutes and the first year of sailings sold out within five hours. The majority of these bookings were made by loyal Celebrity Cruises fans, many of them new to river cruising.
This presented Celebrity Cruises with an interesting challenge. If their guests are accustomed to large ships with a pax count in the thousands and the kind of extensive amenities only achievable at sea, how can these 172-passenger ships deliver a comparable experience? How will they condense everything that makes them special into a smaller vessel? And how can they set themselves apart from the crowd?
In true Celebrity Cruises fashion, they’ve risen to the challenge beautifully. Doing away with a traditional river ship lobby, the beating heart of the ship will instead comprise the Martini Bar and Café al Bacio, both mainstays of Celebrity’s Edge-class
ocean ships. This has the dual benefit of creating a ‘home-away-from-home’ feel for past guests and contributing to the lively, fun ambience that Celebrity hopes will turn heads on the rivers. In the same vein, the popular Sunset Bar will also make an appearance, at the aft of the ship alongside an outdoor pool.
On these ships, every centimetre counts and in an unusually flexible move, Celebrity have opted to allocate much of the precious space to six dining and drinking venues, aware that their guests prize the luxury of choice above all else. Indeed, when it comes to accommodation, guests can look forward to a choice of five stateroom categories: River View, Infinite Balcony, Balcony, Skylight Infinite Balcony Suite and Vista Balcony Suite. As there is to be no theatre onboard, entertainment will likely consist of local performers or nighttime tours in each city.
Excursions are set to take different forms, including the ‘Storyteller Series’ which will be led by locals and the self-guided ‘Keys To The City’ tours, which involve downloading digital resources and exploring at your own pace. There are also hands-on ‘Skillmaster’ excursions and unforgettable ‘Celebrity Takeovers’, a series of private events, exclusively for Celebrity guests. Unlike their ocean programme, every river port will feature at least one included excursion. Each group is capped at 15 people, so everyone is guaranteed an ultra-personalised experience.
All this said, one thing is clear: there has never been a more exciting time to be a Celebrity Cruises fan.
