Fall in Steveston always feels like a fresh start. The summer crowds have thinned, but the Village is still buzzing with locals shopping and looking forward to seasonal events. October brings the annual Scarecrow Crawl, Thanksgiving, and Halloween trick-or-treating. November follows with Girls’ Night Out and the Tree Lighting, while December ushers in festive merriment with Winter in the Village traditions, including horse-drawn carriage rides, Santa’s arrival by boat, the Classic Car Cruise, and more.
On the cover of this issue is Kristy Quan, owner of A Monkey Tree. Two and a half years ago, Kristy purchased the shop and has carried on its reputation as one of Steveston’s must-visit stores. A Monkey Tree is loved for its Canadian-made gifts, cards, and home décor, and continues to flourish thanks to the support of loyal locals. Kristy is committed to actively giving back, serving as vice-president of the Steveston Merchants Association.
We also feature the RHA Thrift Shop, which has recently completed a major restoration of its beautiful 131-year-old heritage building. Run entirely by volunteers, the shop raises funds for Richmond Hospital while offering affordable treasures for shoppers. The dedicated team of 125 Red Coat volunteers is a shining example of people making a difference while doing what they love.
Thank you for continuing to support the shops, restaurants, and services that keep Steveston vibrant all year long; it makes a huge impact during these shoulder seasons. Steveston Insider is marking 18 years in business, and that milestone wouldn’t be possible without the ongoing support of our readers, advertisers, and community.
See you around the Village,

Chances are, if you walk along Moncton Street, you’ll be drawn into A Monkey Tree with its inviting window and sidewalk displays. Once inside, you will lose track of time as you browse the beautiful shop, known for its unique selection of gifts, home décor, and cards—many of which are made or designed in Canada.
Two and a half years ago, Kristy Quan took a leap of faith and purchased the well-loved store. Stepping into the role of owner felt completely natural, since A Monkey Tree is closely tied to her family, the community, and her roots. It was a homecoming of sorts for Kristy, who was born and raised in Steveston. After spending several years living in central Richmond, she felt the pull to return to the village. “There is a sense of home in Steveston,” she says.
Kristy comes by her love of retail honestly. Her mother, Kelly Krull, is a well-known Stevestonite who has spent many years working in retail. As a teenager, Kristy’s first job was at Splash Toy Store, working alongside her mom. Kelly went on to manage A Monkey Tree long before Kristy purchased it.
Interestingly, Kristy’s original career plan was to be a mortgage broker. She attended UBC’s Sauder School of Business, and in her selfproclaimed “driven manner,” not only did she complete the program well ahead of schedule, but she even managed to attend classes while caring for her daughter, who was only four months old. Looking back, Kristy sees a connection between the two professions: both are built around helping people and offering great service.
Kristy recalls, “When this opportunity came up, I was more interested in what would happen here.” A bonus is that Kelly has a wealth of knowledge to share. Kristy refers to Kelly as the store’s “momager.” There is plenty of laughter at the shop, including moments when she finds herself calling out, “Mom!” across the floor.
“We balance each other with our tastes and determining quantities to purchase,” says Kelly. “We know what’s giftable, and we’ve honed in on what we are really good at.” Their staff also offer valuable insight and customers’ suggestions are considered too. Kelly explains, “People suggest items they would like us to carry.” One customer’s request to carry pie weights turned out to be a hit.
“Whether you’re searching for the perfect gift or a treat for yourself, treasures await in every corner,” Kristy says. Kelly adds, “Each section of the store tells a story. Stories are everything.”
The beautifully curated store includes mini departments such as candles, cards, clothing, coastal, jewellery, kitchenware, nautical, pets, pink and girlie, soaps, stationery, and of course, the perennial favourites—hummingbirds and mushrooms.
Steveston specialty items such as wall art, baseball caps, and tea towels are customer favourites. Locals love celebrating and supporting their community, and Kristy notes that about 90 per cent of their sales come from them.
“Buying Canadian is a logical choice because it is easy to access, and we subscribe to the idea of a small business buying from other small businesses,” Kristy explains.
One of their newest lines is Mint Cleaning, eco-friendly home and body products developed by two Uclueletbased partners who were featured on Dragons’ Den. Their products are now sold across Canada.
Many will remember how puzzles became a “thing” during the pandemic, and it seems the love affair hasn’t ended. Villager Puzzles is a company that showcases Canadian female artists with many designs featuring West Coast landscapes.
The shop has also expanded its selection from one of Canada’s finest chocolatiers, Victoriabased Rogers’ Chocolates. Another winner is InstaCake, a cake mix in a card that delivers sweet wishes plus everything needed to make a delicious cake in minutes.
A Monkey Tree was the first retailer to carry Little b Confectionery’s handcrafted salted caramels. Since then, the sweet treats have taken off like wildfire. Fun fact: Ladner-based creator Iona Barnes is a registered dental hygienist by day and a confectioner by night.
Salt Spring Island couple Don and Suzanne Zacharias are the creative team behind Cedar Mountain Studios. They design and make beautiful home décor, including art blocks and coasters.
Vancouver-based Danica Brands is a market leader in the home, kitchen, and giftware industry; some of their popular items include whimsical tea towels, aprons, lunch bags, and ceramics.
A Monkey Tree is also known for its terrific
selection of cards. Kelly says, “The price point is very good. We try to keep them under $6.”
Customers can often be heard saying, “We love it!” or “It’s beautiful.”
They come not just for products but also for the atmosphere—the playlist, the joy, and the warmth of the staff. “Everyone is welcome at A Monkey Tree,” Kristy says.
The team of nine part-time and full-time employees is central to the shop’s success. “We have a great team, and I feel confident that I can leave the store in their hands,” Kristy says. She and Kelly emphasize that the staff’s happiness and dedication mean as much as customer approval. “Knowing that our staff are happy and care about the shop is so rewarding. We are like family,” Kristy explains.
“Our connection with the community is a great reward. It’s all integrated.”
Kristy’s role also extends beyond the store. As vice-president of the Steveston Merchants Association (SMA), she works to strengthen the village’s business community. “We all need to come together,” she says. She believes that
promoting Steveston benefits all businesses and makes the community better for everyone. Follow @amonkeytree on Instagram, where the shop frequently shares the latest village events.
Each autumn, Kelly pours her creative talent into designing A Monkey Tree’s scarecrow for the Scarecrow Crawl. The team also joins the fun by handing out goodies on Halloween, while Girls’ Night Out remains one of their busiest days of the year. Planning happens year-round, and this year Kristy and Kelly are especially excited about the gift they have lined up.
As a busy mother, shop owner, and SMA board member, Kristy juggles many responsibilities. Moving closer to the store has helped, and she makes sure to take weekends to spend time with her husband and daughter.
Kelly sums it up: “It takes a village to make a business successful. Once you find that village you never want to leave.” Kristy agrees: “We are thrilled to hear that people love the work we do. It feels like I’ve always been here, but it has only been two and a half
It feels good to have come full circle.”

Many Stevestonites are doing double takes as they pass the Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary (RHA) Thrift Shop. Over the past year, the 131-year-old heritage building has undergone a stunning transformation, lovingly restored as close as possible to its original appearance.
The Richmond Hospital/Healthcare Auxiliary was established in 1961 to help fund the creation of Richmond Hospital. Groups of local women came together to form the Auxiliary, raising money for the hospital and much-needed equipment. One of their earliest initiatives was opening a thrift shop, staffed entirely by volunteers, in a rented storefront on Moncton Street. Despite limitations on what donations could be accepted, the shop flourished. Around 2007–2008, the Auxiliary moved into its current, larger location—a former Methodist church built in 1894.
The move proved successful. The larger
space became a popular place to shop and allowed the Auxiliary to accept a wider range of donations. The number of customers and volunteers also grew. By 2019, however, the rent was rising while the structure itself was deteriorating. Moving was not an option as Chatham Street was a prime location. Former Auxiliary Presidents Ursula van Duin and Colleen Kason convinced the Board to purchase the building outright. A few years later, the Auxiliary embarked on a major renovation, which included laying steel pillars 30 feet deep, as the building lacked a proper foundation. The City of Richmond supported the effort with a $100,000 grant and promised another grant toward exterior renovations.
Since its inception, the Auxiliary has raised over $100 million—most of it through the Thrift Shop.
This year, Valerie Burkimsher was elected President of the Board. In addition, she serves as the Sunday floor manager and oversees the organization’s publicity and website. Valerie brings a wealth of non-profit experience, including her time as Director of Fundraising at Dartmouth General Hospital in Nova Scotia, where she worked closely with the hospital auxiliary. After moving to Steveston 20 years ago, she discovered the RHA Thrift Shop. “I knew I could contribute to their mission of raising money for Richmond Hospital,” she says.
Another dedicated Red Coat volunteer is Pam Ogden, who serves on the Board, supervises two days a week, and manages the Shop’s Instagram and Facebook pages.
hundred and twentyfive Red Coat volunteers generously donate their time to the Thrift Shop.
They range in age from 16 to 90. Last year, the Auxiliary began welcoming high school students aged 16 and up to volunteer on weekends. This provides valuable real-world experience for students’ résumés while also helping the shop cover key weekend shifts.
Valerie explains, “We welcome volunteers who can commit to at least one full-day shift of five to six hours each week. Right now, we’re especially in need of male volunteers who
can price and occasionally repair electronic items, as well as establish prices for sporting goods. They must also be able to carry boxes of donations into the sorting area from outside the shop. We also welcome volunteers with special expertise in any area.”
“Working with other volunteers is a lot of fun. No two days are alike.”
When you enter the shop through the side entrance, you’ll see a beehive of activity in the back room, where volunteers are hard at work sorting and pricing donations. They never know what they’ll find—jewellery is often tucked inside garment pockets. Any item suspected of being high-end, such as gold
pieces, small diamond necklaces, or rings, is sent to a jeweller for appraisal. A wide array of costume jewellery is always popular and affordably priced.
“The volume of high-end clothing always amazes us,” says Valerie. “A few years ago, we opened our boutique section with garments priced slightly higher than our regular stock because of their higher quality and designer or brand labels. Once, a genuine pink Chanel suit was donated.” She adds, “We frequently receive high-end antiques and either sell them in the shop or work with an auction house.”
Volunteers often go above and beyond, taking silverware home to polish, laundering or staintreating clothing, or making minor repairs. One volunteer even stores Christmas items yearround in her garage to free up space in the shop.
The Thrift Shop is neatly organized into departments where you can find everything from clothing to books, CDs, records, toys, and a huge assortment of household items. Watch for the special $2 sales when selected clothing is priced to clear!
On an ongoing basis, the Auxiliary Board considers requests for funding from Richmond Hospital and its associated extended-care residences, Minoru Long-Term Care and Lions Manor Long-Term Care.
Hospital funding supports comfort items such as warming blankets, specialized medical equipment, perinatal loss and mental health therapy, and clothing for emergency patients to wear home when their own clothing is no longer usable, as well as many other needs.
Minoru and Lions Manor have benefited from specialized walkers, mattresses, passive exercise machines, fish tanks, hip protectors, fall reduction mats, therapy programs, two buses, and patio benches.
The Thrift Shop regularly donates used clothing to unhoused community members, along with donated pet food and supplies.
Each year the Auxiliary awards four bursaries of $2,500 each to outstanding Richmond Health Services student volunteers pursuing post-secondary education in a healthcare related field in Canada to assist with their education costs.
As the latest renovation wraps up this fall, the hard-working Red Coat volunteers look forward to celebrating alongside the City of Richmond and the community.
“Knowing that the work we do greatly benefits healthcare and people in our community is extremely rewarding,” says Valerie. “Meeting and working with like-minded people who become new friends is a close second.”
