Publisher’s Note Spring has arrived, cherry trees are in full bloom and sweet floral fragrances permeate the air. Neighbours who we haven’t seen all winter are coming out of their houses to weed their gardens, mow their lawns and go for a bike ride. Sunshine is most inspiring! On this month’s cover we feature Terri Clark, the Coordinator of the Kerrisdale Business Association since 1999. She is behind many of the great events and initiatives in the community. Also featured in this issue is long time Kerrisdale resident, Robert Sharman. He is Vice President and Senior Wealth Advisor for BMO Nesbitt Burns (Kerrisdale) and has over 30 years of experience in banking, personal trust and investment. While April brings showers, we have a lot to look forward to this spring, including May flowers. Carnival Days in Kerrisdale follows Easter weekend. This two-day Kerrisdale

Business Association event promises amazing sidewalk sales, entertainment, a photo booth, horse carriage rides and the main event on Saturday - the annual Little League Parade complete with marching bands. Magee Secondary School is set to stage a huge party in celebration of its 100th birthday on May 23 and 24. The colourful red street banners are in place along W 41st Avenue and West Boulevard. Festivities include a production at Queen Elizabeth Theatre followed by dancing in the streets the next day. Other highlights include a pancake breakfast, beer garden and an open house at Magee Secondary. Kerrisdale Arena changes gears as the ice comes out and the Play Palace goes in. Local fields get busy with soccer and baseball, while runners prepare for races. Maple Grove Outdoor Pool is the place to learn to swim, have a family picnic, or have a refreshing dip. Spring is a beautiful season in Kerrisdale. It’s time to stroll the village streets or hop on your bike, and explore the wonderful shops, eateries and services that make up this fabulous district.

Terri Clark has been the Coordinator of the Kerrisdale Business Association since 1999. She has had a vested interest in this community since the mid-1970s when she and her husband, Peter Clark, purchased their first home on West 37th Avenue. Terri Clark has known many of the long-term business owners for years, and is eager to see this neighbourhood continue to thrive and evolve. Originally from New York, Clark moved to Vancouver in 1973 after meeting her husbandto-be in Mexico. She started working for the Vancouver Park Board almost immediately and held a variety of Communications positions during her 35-year career with the City of Vancouver. The Kerrisdale Business Association is one of the oldest Business Improvement Areas (BIA)
in Vancouver. If you are not a member of the business community the term BIA may be unfamiliar to you, however everyone benefits from the work that these associations accomplish. In fact, there are 70 BIAs hard at work across British Columbia, to promote and improve business districts. Once area property owners and City Council approve a BIA (in the case of the KBA this happened in the early 1990s), every business becomes a member and pays a share of the cost through their rent to make the program a success. In total, approximately 250 businesses, services and property owners belong to the KBA. The KBA is fortunate to have a very active and dedicated board of directors. The group of 18 business and property owners is involved on committees, which address beautification, events, finance, marketing, publicity and parking. Clark says the devoted KBA board has terrific “esprit de Coeur” and they go beyond the call of duty to make the Association a success. It is thanks to their hard work that she is only required to work part-time hours. Her duties include updating the website, advertising, marketing, writing newsletters, and managing the free Kerrisdale Parkade on W. 42nd Avenue. An attractive and well-maintained shopping district makes a community a more desirable and inviting place to conduct business. With this in mind, the KBA has developed their own street furniture program featuring elegant teak benches which can be dedicated through donation, and large terra cotta pots lush with spring and summer plantings. The Association is loyal to one graphic designer to create the seasonal street banners and posters, providing year round continuity and classic looking art pieces too. Local business, Provident Security, is employed to provide nightly patrols throughout the KBA’s district as well as daytime security during the holiday season.

The KBA is well known for staging a variety of outstanding community events that draw the neighbourhood together. This is in part due to Terri Clark’s extensive background in event planning. During her career with the Vancouver Park Board (she retired in 2008), she was responsible for launching VanDusen Botanical Garden’s highly successful Festival of Lights. She was also instrumental in bringing outdoor movies back to Stanley Park’s Ceperley Meadow in 2001 and thought a similar plan would work for Kerrisdale. Two years ago Terri Clark’s outdoor cinema idea for Kerrisdale became reality when E.T. – The Extra Terrestrial was shown to an enthusiastic crowd at Elm Park. Now a Kerrisdale tradition, last summer’s Back to the Future attracted an audience of 1,000 movie fans, who happily sat under the stars on blankets and lawn chairs, feasted on complimentary popcorn (care of sponsor Provident Security) and cheered for their favourite characters. This summer audiences can look forward to celebrating the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters. Additional KBA sponsored special events take place throughout the year, ranging from Kerrisdale Arena free skates at Halloween and in the spring, to horse drawn carriage rides during all major events, Music Under the Clock on summer Saturdays, Kerrisdale Days (the annual celebration of Kerrisdale’s birthday), and Kerrisdale Idol which has been a fixture for the last ten years. An avid gardener, Terri Clark originally was attracted to Kerrisdale’s larger residential properties where she would be able to devote time to creating an outdoor sanctuary. Two years ago the Clarks sold their home and moved to the Mackenzie Street neighbourhood, which also happens to be where her eldest daughter Jessica Clark owns and operates her respected boutique flower business, Quince Fine Florals. common practice now, at the time it was a big step for regulators to allow this to transpire. He says he could immediately see the advantages for both himself and his clients. Sharman and his team pride themselves on understanding their clients’ distinct situations. He explains that their approach to investment planning is not a cookie cutter formula. Instead they work to create individual strategies. He and his advisors take the time to meet with you to fully understand your goals and individual needs. He describes it as a “holistic approach” to customizing personalized solutions. They follow a disciplined process that focuses on their clients’ total financial picture. A plan is devised to assess risk levels, and then they build a customized strategy. Sharman and his colleagues provide reassurance through the planning process and beyond. He says that too many advisors create what he calls a “sausage factory,” a model where one account looks very similar to another. He points out that good wealth advisors look at long-term strategies and yet still make small tactical shifts when required. On a quarterly basis the Sharman office closes for 3 or 4 days to take inventory of each account. Realizing that circumstances

can change and goals can alter, plans are monitored closely to ensure you stay on your desired course. Every 3 to 5 years Sharman likes to wipe the slate clean and pretend that he is meeting you for the first time. Together you will create a fresh ‘financial vision document’ to determine what is important to you. It is said good things come in threes. This is the third time Sharman has worked in Kerrisdale. He was the bank manager of the Royal Trust branch in the mid 1990s. In 1999 Sharman was working as an Investment Advisor with another firm when Nesbitt Burns recruited him. They were looking for advisors with a broad background, especially those from the world of banking, as they began placing Nesbitt Advisors into Bank of Montreal branches. Practicing what he advises others to do is very important to Sharman. He has made some wise personal financial decisions by planning ahead. For example, he knows that in the next five years he will want to retire and is currently grooming his Nesbitt Burns Associate, Cameron McLean, to assume his position. When Sharman retires McLean will have been with Nesbitt Burns for ten years. Another example of his forward thinking, Sharman and his wife Sharon have invested in a condominium in Victoria to become their retirement home.

Sharman loves living in “beautiful downtown Kerrisdale” and jokes that other than people who work at home, he likely has one the shortest commutes possible as he lives across the street from his office. He can often go for extended periods where he does not leave the neighbourhood. He is grateful to live in a community where he conducts virtually all of his business by foot.
Pipeline Construction executives in Canada. He says his father “was a big deal” and that people flocked around him. His mother was originally from Australia and spent some of her early years in New Zealand. The family lived in Bragg Creek, Alberta, where Sharman says he led an idyllic childhood in the rural community complete with snowmobiles and horses.
He and his wife Sharon are avid cyclists and have toured Europe and the east coast of Canada by bicycle. Comparing Kerrisdale to Victoria, he says the capital city’s Galloping Goose Regional Trail is a huge asset to that community. He wishes the railway corridor through Kerrisdale could be transformed into a similar pedestrian path and bike lane.
Prior to attending the University of Calgary, Sharman’s father secured him a position working on the pipeline as a member of the Teamsters union. He admits it was a very well paid job, and more importantly he really enjoyed the adventures. He saw parts of Canada he would not otherwise have seen, and had a few close calls along the way, including driving a big truck over an ice bridge as a river was melting and was close to breaking up. In addition, he got to know and become friends with a wonderful group of men he may never have had the opportunity to meet.
The couple adores globetrotting. On their travels they collect key chains, fridge magnets and other souvenirs that they adapt to become decorations for their Christmas “memory tree.” Each year when they trim this special tree they are reminded of their journeys. Sharman confesses this collection is by far their most prized possession. Sharman enjoys volunteer work but does not always want to be assigned the obvious role of treasurer. He says,” I am happy to be the guy who collects garbage or directs parking.” Regardless of what role Sharman assumes, he says it is of utmost importance that he delivers on a promise in every aspect of his life, from his career to his volunteer work. It is apparent that Sharman had a very close relationship with his British-born father, Bob Sharman, who became one of the top

Sharman says his dad earned the nickname “Charmin’ Sharman” and that he has inherited only a fraction of his charisma. More of his father’s charm has rubbed off on Sharman than he gives himself credit for. As for his extremely successful career, he modestly says that it would give his father comfort to know his son is doing okay. Magee Secondary School, the grand dame of Kerrisdale high schools, is set to stage a huge party in celebration of its 100th birthday. Festivities in celebration of Magee’s centennial take place on a grand scale the weekend of May 23 and 24, 2014. The Centennial organizing committee advises, “Hang on to your hats. Friday night will be memorable and filled with much excitement.” Harvey advises alumni to set aside the May 23rd weekend to join the celebrations. This is a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and spend time with those who have been by your side since the glory days of high school. There will be dancing in the streets May 24th as Kerrisdale village welcomes three bands featuring Magee alumni. The stage will be located on Yew Street between W. 40th and W. 41st Avenues. Street entertainment and other events are also being planned. Courtesy of the Kerrisdale Business Association, West 41st Avenue will be adorned with Magee Centennial Celebration banners. A pancake breakfast takes place at the Kerrisdale Community Centre (9 - 11 a.m.) followed by a beer garden at the Royal Canadian Legion Kerrisdale (12 - 5 p.m.). Merchants and community organizations will provide warm welcomes at their establishments throughout the weekend. Both Magee alumni and the public are invited to visit Magee Secondary on May 24th between 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A variety of activities are planned including tours of the new school, performances, decade rooms, memorabilia, a photo booth, and food and refreshments.
