A Guide to Local Shopping and Events

DUNBAR VILLAGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION
Message from President, Vicki Bell
Welcome to the fall issue of Dunbar Life! With summer ending, we turn our attention to autumn, a season of changing leaves, cooler days, Thanksgiving gatherings, and plenty of pumpkins.
On our cover is Darren Marshall, owner of Emporium at 4325 Dunbar. Since opening on March 12, his shop has quickly become a not-to-be-missed destination in Dunbar with its stunning vintage and antique selections, bold purple exterior, beautiful hanging flower baskets, and of course, Darren’s warm, friendly welcome. Known to many as Sparkly Darren, he shares his 40 years of experience and passion for vintage and antique treasures, creating a space that is warm and welcoming.
Inside this issue, you will also find the story of St. Philip’s Anglican Church at 3737 West 27th Avenue, as it celebrates its 100th year in Dunbar: a century of worship, service, and connection. Their year has been filled with concerts, guest speakers, neighbourhood history walks, and the start of the Centennial Courtyard Project that will transform the grounds into a more welcoming, accessible public space. With the arrival of Rev. Anne Privett, the church looks to the future with a fresh vision.
The DVBA is asking residents to raise their
voices about Dunbar’s empty storefronts, many of which have been left vacant and derelict for years. These long-term vacancies affect not only local businesses but the entire community. The City of Vancouver has repeatedly stated that persistent commercial vacancies are a major concern, yet action has been slow. We encourage you to contact the Mayor and Council to press for immediate solutions. Concerns about the continuing reduction of small business storefronts along Dunbar Street should also be raised. You can share your feedback through the City’s online form at: vancouver.ca/your-government/ contact-council.aspx.
The DVBA is looking forward to our annual fall community event. Trick-or-Treat in Dunbar Village will take place this year on October 25. This family-friendly, nonfrightening event will be held from 3pm–5pm. We can’t wait to see children and their families in their Halloween costumes, trick-or-treating at Dunbar businesses.
This year marks 15 years of the DVBA partnering with Dunbar Life. Over the years, the magazine has helped showcase Dunbar’s shops, services, and community events, keeping residents connected and supporting our local economy. This long-standing partnership has played an important role in promoting the businesses that make Dunbar Village unique. We thank you for reading, for shopping locally, and for being part of what keeps the Dunbar spirit alive.
Welcome to Dunbar Village

EMPORIUM: Dunbar Welcomes a Sparkly New Business
Article by Sarah Gordon Photos by Sandra Steier & Carolynne Palla
Like a crow, charismatic Emporium’s owner Darren Marshall is attracted to shiny objects. Since he was young, he’s been an avid collector of anything sparkly and beautiful. He reveals, “I don’t buy things that I don’t love.” Darren has a natural gift for interacting with people, and a visit to his shop feels like being welcomed into his home. He says, “My store is a reflection of me,” and notes that his home is similar to his gorgeous Emporium.
He previously owned the store Magpie on Main Street for five years. After it closed, he sold online and at auctions for a few years, but felt the timing was right to begin a new venture. Earlier this year, Darren drove by the vacant storefront that had been home to Alma Vintage. He instantly knew he had found the perfect location for his new shop with its two large windows, perfectly situated in front of a bus stop. The store opened on March 12.
Pantone’s Radiant Orchid was chosen for the exterior—a bold, inviting purple that turns heads. Vibrant hanging baskets add curbside appeal. The interior renovations were largely tackled by the multi-talented owner, with some help from his friends. He custom-created rich shades of lapis, rose quartz and malachite for the walls and added crown moulding, shelving, and track lighting. He’s created a place you simply don’t want to leave.
Like a magician pulling a rabbit out of a hat, he transformed the storefront into three separate spaces. With retail space at a premium, Darren saw no need for a storeroom; instead, he used every inch for display. The result is like visiting a three-room art gallery.
Darren’s background in interior design shines through in the gorgeous vignettes he creates.
One should allow time to slow down and explore every carefully curated corner of Emporium. Look up, look down, there are treasures in every direction. You’ll find vintage and antique glass, ceramics, lighting, jewellery, artwork, and so much more.
As the saying goes, “If you build it, they will come.” Sure enough, customers began arriving as soon as the store opened. “Dunbar is a very supportive community,” says Darren.
Customers come from all over the Lower Mainland to visit Emporium. His Instagram followers are growing, and word of mouth is spreading. Visit @sparklydarren on Instagram and you’ll discover, just like the music he plays in-store, his posts are paired with a thoughtfully curated soundtrack. Nina Simone is one of his favourite singers, and her vibe fits the shop like a glove.
He often hears customers say, “This is just what Dunbar needed.”
People have been incredibly positive about this one-of-a-kind business. Darren is getting to know people’s names, and friendships are forming. He says, “This is much more about community than commerce.”

Darren loves a good party, which presents an opportunity to dress up and socialize. At Emporium’s lavish grand opening, he served bubbly, a six-foot-long charcuterie platter (yes, you read that right!) and croquembouche from neighbouring business Toña, of which he is a big fan.
His fascination with collecting began when Darren was just a little boy. His mother took him to a farm auction and gave him $5, and after

teaching him how to bid, he was off to the races. Darren spotted a box containing Wonder Woman comics (he had a massive crush on Lynda Carter) and placed his first bid. Little did he know that the box held more valuable items beneath the comics, including a carnival glass pedestal bowl valued at $300, which a woman bought from him on the spot, and assorted gold jewellery worth around $400.
His passion for buying and selling collectibles truly took off in his twenties, when Darren scoured vintage and church sales. Today, he mostly visits people, often those downsizing their homes, by appointment.
With 40 years of experience and a keen eye for quality, Darren is well-versed in the history and stories behind the pieces he sells, from their country of origin to their makers.
“My days are long, often 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, but I needed to do something positive, and opening the store was it,” Darren says. “This is a place of positivity, and it gives me a reason to get up and get dressed. I like talking to people.”
Emporium isn’t bound to any particular period. It contains treasures from the early 1800s to 2010. Darren comments, “Every era has bursts of good, and sometimes genius, design.”
How does he classify Sparkly Darren’s Curated

Emporium of Incomparable Vintage Goods?
“It’s a marriage of home décor and antiques that is relevant to what people are looking for today. It doesn’t have to be old; it has to be beautiful. You won’t find any plastic here.”
You’re always in for a surprise when you visit Emporium. The stock is constantly evolving, displays get refreshed, and new and unexpected objects are always making an appearance.
Darren says, “I enjoy offering people a place to escape. They come into Emporium and breathe.”

ST. PHILIP’S ANGLICAN CHURCH: Ready to Embrace the Next 100 Years
Article by Sarah Gordon Photos submitted
St. Philip’s Church has been an integral part of the Dunbar community since 1925. This year, the church celebrates its centenary, a significant milestone marked not only by gratitude for the past, but also by renewed energy and vision under the leadership of its new rector, Rev. Anne Privett.
One hundred years ago, Dunbar was still a developing corner of Vancouver. Streetcar tracks had just reached this outlying area, Lord Byng Secondary and Lord Kitchener Elementary had opened their doors, and the business district between West 25th and West 30th Avenues was beginning to grow.
Amidst this growth, the seeds of St. Philip’s were planted. The church began with a Sunday school program, followed by worship services held in a Lord Kitchener annex. By 1929, parishioners had constructed the Church Hall, a multifunctional space designed for both worship and community gatherings. Over the decades, the hall became a vibrant hub, hosting worship services, youth groups, concerts, dances, Scouts and tennis matches, and during the 1940s and 1950s, it was home
to the largest Sunday school in Canada.
For many, St. Philip’s is more than a church; it’s a place where lifelong memories have been made.
Diana Bragg, a devoted parishioner, recalls arriving at St. Philip’s as a four-year-old in 1943. “We walked up the steep wooden stairs and entered a hall bursting with over 1,000 children,” she recalls. “I’d never seen that many kids in one place!” That day marked the beginning of her lifelong connection to the church.
Diana’s memories bring to life the vibrant energy of those years, from Maypole dances led by the rector’s wife to packed Easter services. Parishioners dressed in their finest new coats, straw hats and white gloves would line up almost to Dunbar Street waiting to go into one of two packed services. “We could smell the Easter lilies even outside the church!” she says.

Her recollections span decades, from her teenage years setting pins in the church’s stilloperational bowling alley to joining the choir, where she has now sung for 45 years.
In 2018, Nadine Gomm was a relatively new singer in a small choir at Dunbar Community Centre. “When scheduling problems came up, our little choir began renting space at St. Philip's. Unfortunately, the old upright piano in the Fireside Room had a wobbly leg and couldn’t be shifted around; this allowed us to move into the sanctuary, which was so beautiful in design and acoustics!”
“Over the seasons, there were lots of laughs, shared tears, and the odd, less joyful episode,

but that’s what life and community are all about,” Nadine says. “I'm grateful to have shared in a small fraction of St. Philip’s century of love, service, and stories.”
The Rectory was built in 1938, followed by the Church Sanctuary in 1941, and the Fireside Room was added in 1948 to support returning servicemen and women, as well as their growing post-war families.
This calling to serve the community continues today, with St. Philip’s providing a home to a wide range of non-profit groups—from AA to Aikido, preschools to pickleball, Guides and Scouts to the Seniors Café, as well as the Kiwanis Music Festival and music of all kinds.
Since 2008, St. Philip’s has partnered with neighbouring Anglican churches in the Westside Anglicans Neighbourhood Ministry, providing essentials and support to people experiencing homelessness. Other outreach initiatives include cooking and serving meals for residents at Dunbar Apartments. Volunteer Suzi Noetzel notes, “We often have our youth participate, which provides them with a way to give back to the community and helps teach them the importance of volunteering.”

Parishioners also generously fund grocery gift cards for families. Joanne Vondette leads this effort. She says, “The Outreach Committee actively supports food security programs for families in four Vancouver elementary schools. The expressions of gratitude and relief from school principals reinforce our will to continue this ministry year after year.”
This fall, the church will launch a four-part educational series titled “To Everything There Is a Season,” designed to help community members navigate the final stages of life, from end-of-life planning to spiritual reflection. “There’s a real hunger for thoughtful, compassionate discussion about these transitions,” says Daphne Francis, a former nurse who leads the church’s Pastoral Care team.
St.
Philip’s invites the community to welcome Rev. Anne Privett.
As St. Philip’s marks its 100th year, it also welcomes a new leader: Rev. Anne Privett, who was officially appointed rector by the archbishop on July 1, 2025. Her induction service is set for Wednesday, September 10, at 7:00 p.m., and the entire community is invited.
Rev. Privett arrived at St. Philip’s in December 2024 and undertook a discernment process with the parish before her appointment. She brings a diverse background, having served parishes in Toronto, Nanaimo, Gabriola Island, Victoria, and Kelowna. Before joining St. Philip’s, she spent a decade at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church in Kelowna, where she helped cultivate a ministry centred around urban farming.
With a B.A. in English Literature from the

University of Alberta and a Master of Divinity from the University of Toronto, Rev. Privett also brings rich pastoral and theological experience, including time spent on placement in Kingfisher Lake First Nation. She is deeply interested in the intersection of faith, community, and sustainable agriculture.
“My role as priest and leader is to help the congregation listen to their deep desires and to the needs of our neighbours. When well discerned, our truest desires reflect God’s desire for us. The truest needs of our neighbours reflect God’s call to us. A vision for St. Philip’s will be discerned at the intersection of these two things and will require listening, prayer, creativity and risk,” explains Rev. Privett.
She and her husband, Nick, live nearby with their cat, Evie. This fall, St. Philip’s will also become a training site for theological students, a move that reflects her commitment to lifelong learning and equipping future leaders.

The centennial year has already featured a wide array of events, from a Beatles sing-along that drew over 170 enthusiastic singers to a Centennial Speaker Series featuring esteemed guests Elizabeth May and Dr. John Helliwell. Historian John Atkin led a neighbourhood walk from St. Philip’s exploring Dunbar’s rapid growth in the 1920s, and Lord Byng’s own centennial concert took place inside the very church that grew up alongside the school.

joyous community-wide reception for everyone with ties to St Philip’s. You are invited to bring your photos and stories to share!
Ongoing celebrations include the Centennial Courtyard Project, led by Derek Simpkins. The initiative is transforming St. Philip’s courtyard into a landscaped public space featuring many native plants and trees, with fixed benches and movable tables and chairs for outdoor activities. A new glass enclosed-lift, reconstructed entry stairs and an improved ramp will provide safer access to the church buildings.
Looking ahead, a Centennial Evensong with Archbishop John Stephens will take place on Sunday, October 5, at 4:00 p.m., followed by a
Through a century of history, change, and renewal, St. Philip’s has remained steadfast in its mission: to be a place of worship, welcome, and witness. As the Dunbar neighbourhood continues to evolve, so too does the church, ever grounded in faith and ready to embrace the next 100 years.
