Hello, summer!
Sunshine and long days invite us to slow down and soak up the season. It’s the perfect time to explore the neighbourhood on foot or by bike, and take in everything Dunbar has to offer. Consider leaving your car behind and exploring Dunbar Street on foot or by bike, and stopping to enjoy a beverage or meal at one of our local cafés, restaurants, or patios.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19. The Shamrock Storehouse will be a popular local gathering place to catch matches, enjoy food and drinks, and connect with neighbours.
Stong’s Market is this issue’s cover story, highlighting its continued role as a community gathering place and local shopping destination since opening in Dunbar in 1955. Read about Stong’s commitment to supporting local producers, expanding fresh prepared food offerings, and maintaining the personal customer service and neighbourhood connections that have defined the business for generations.
This issue also features the Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education, which has opened a new learning centre at 3536 West 41st Avenue, offering personalized academic support and enrichment programs for students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 in English, Math, Science, and STEAM. Founded by awardwinning educator Dr. Jenny Chan, the centre focuses on individualized learning plans, mentorship, and small-group instruction designed to build confidence, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

Several other businesses have recently opened or are preparing to open in the neighbourhood. Fiore Mercato is preparing to open at 4585 Dunbar Street, bringing an Italian-inspired market concept connected to the Fiore restaurant group. Ivido, a clothing boutique featuring premium Colombian denim, has opened at 4305 Dunbar Street; Revian Skin & Laser has opened at 5540 Dunbar Street; and Dunbar Hair Place has relocated to 4311 Dunbar Street.
We are pleased to report that Dunbar’s new temporary community plaza at West 27th Avenue on the east side of Dunbar Street has now been installed. The upgraded space includes new seating, landscaping, a water fountain, and, soon, umbrellas to provide shade over the picnic tables. The plaza has been designed to create a welcoming place for residents and visitors to stop, meet, and spend time in the neighbourhood.

STONG’S MARKET: A Dunbar Tradition Since 1955

Ten years after relocating to its current location, Stong’s Market continues to blend tradition with quality. The store honours its past with nostalgic touches like Champion, the coin-operated horse, and historical photos thoughtfully integrated throughout the space to celebrate its roots. It has also evolved to meet changing customer preferences and shopping habits.
Carson Stong opened the first Stong’s Market in Toronto in the early 1890s with his brother Joe. With the onset of the Depression in 1931, Carson moved to Vancouver and set up two of the first open-air markets in Vancouver. His son Ralph opened the first Vancouver Stong’s Market in Dunbar in 1955. Ralph’s son-in-law Bill Rossum took over as general manager in 1971.
Although the Rossum family is no longer involved in ownership or operations, Stong’s Market’s current leadership team has
worked since 2018 to preserve the familyoriented culture and strong community focus established over four generations.
Stong’s is proud to offer customers a warm, personal shopping experience.
Having been woven into the neighbourhood for generations, staff know customers by name, families have shopped at their favourite store for decades, and community events remain central to Stong’s identity.
Stong’s Market has grown to four locations, including Dunbar, North Vancouver, Squamish, and its newest store in Surrey’s City Centre 4, which opened last autumn. Stong’s has also expanded STEMS, its fresh-flower and giftware offering, now with two standalone shops in North Vancouver and Surrey.
Brian Bradley, President, oversees all facets of the business and reports to the ownership group.
He reports, “Several key trends are currently shaping the industry. Health and wellness continue to be a major driver, with customers increasingly focused on organic, natural, and better-for-you products. Shoppers are more informed than ever, paying closer attention to ingredients, sourcing, and overall product transparency.”
The
demand for healthier eating, as well as natural and organic options, has continued to grow.
“Convenience is another major factor, with strong and growing demand for prepared meals, ready-to-eat options, and easy meal solutions that fit busy lifestyles.” Brian adds, “Online grocery and delivery services continue to expand slowly, changing how customers shop and expect to interact with retailers. Alongside these shifts, there is also a renewed emphasis on supporting local and Canadianmade products.”

producers.
The store partners with hundreds of local suppliers, from small family farms to emerging
food artisans, giving them a place to grow while bringing customers the freshest, most thoughtfully made products in B.C.
As a result, the store’s shelves reflect the creativity and diversity of B.C.’s food community rather than only what fits within a national distribution model. Supporting local means fresher food, a stronger local economy, and a more connected community, something Stong’s is genuinely proud of.
Among the store’s most popular items are its famous BBQ rotisserie chickens, roast beef, and ham. Sushi made fresh in-store daily provides a quick lunch, dinner or snack option. Freshly prepared salads and pizzas are also customer favourites.
Chef‑crafted dishes offer the quality of a restaurant meal in an easy grab‑and‑go format.
In 2025, Stong’s Market added an Executive Chef to its team. Nathan Taylor develops delicious meal options designed specifically for the busy lives of customers. Nathan has also created a variety of Stong’s fresh juices and smoothies made in-store.
Replenish Café is a welcoming space to gather with family and friends to enjoy drinks or pastries. Whether customers are stopping in for their morning coffee or staying to meet a neighbour, the café is designed to feel like a comfortable community hub.
Being rooted in Dunbar means Stong’s is more than just a grocery store; it’s a gathering place and a trusted part of people’s routines. Since Stong’s Market’s inception in 1931, it has consistently supported family traditions, fundraisers, and the Dunbar Little League.
Knowing that their work supports local farmers, nourishes families, and strengthens the community is one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

DR. JENNY CHAN SCHOOL FOR EDUCATION: Dunbar’s New Centre for Personalized Learning

In today’s academic environment, students face increasing pressure, digital distraction, and the challenge of balancing school, extracurricular activities and personal wellbeing. At Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education, the guiding philosophy is that every student can learn, although not always in the same way.
Many students also struggle with confidence and finding learning approaches that work best for them. At the heart of Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education is a personalized and interactive learning experience that combines coaching methods, academic competitions, and customized educational programs tailored to each learner’s needs and goals.
The newly opened learning centre is the third Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education location; the other two Richmond branches continue to serve families in that community. The Dunbar branch had its soft opening on May 1, 2026, with the official grand opening planned for December 2026.
Dr. Chan says, “We chose Dunbar because it
is a vibrant, family-oriented community that values education and lifelong learning. We wanted to create a welcoming space where students in Vancouver’s west side could access high-quality academic support and enrichment programs closer to home.”
Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education is a personalized learning and enrichment centre serving Kindergarten to Grade 12 students in English, Math, Science, and STEAM education.
As the founder and president of the school, Dr. Chan oversees program development, academic strategy, educational consulting, and long-term vision for the organization.
She has received numerous recognitions, including the UBC President’s Academic Excellence Initiative Ph.D. Award in 2021 and the Best Tutor Award in Richmond for four consecutive years. She was also named one of the top 10 women recognized on International Women’s Day 2025 for her contribution to academia. The school has grown to serve more than 200 students across its three locations.
“We are currently accepting registrations,” Dr. Chan says. “Families can expect an initial diagnostic test to better understand each student’s learning style, academic goals, and areas for growth. From there, we create a personalized learning plan designed to help students succeed with confidence.”
The school places a strong emphasis on parent communication. “We regularly provide updates on student progress, learning goals, and areas for improvement. We want parents to feel involved and supported throughout their child’s academic journey.”
Both individualized instruction and small‑group learning opportunities are available.
“Our personalized approach focuses on understanding each student’s learning style, strengths, challenges, and goals. We incorporate self-directed learning that encourages students to take ownership of their education, develop independence, and become active participants in the learning process.”
At any given time, there are between six to eight students on site, allowing for a more personalized and supportive learning environment.
Programs are customized to provide targeted instruction and meaningful support while building confidence, critical thinking, and longterm learning habits.
Interactive learning methods, coaching strategies, and academic competitions are used to keep students engaged and motivated.
A typical day includes after-school classes, individualized coaching, enrichment activities, and academic mentoring.
“We aim to create an engaging environment where students feel supported, challenged, and motivated to learn. I still tutor and mentor students when possible because staying connected to the classroom experience is important to me.”
The school also emphasizes enrichment beyond the classroom. In addition to core academic instruction, it supports students through Olympiad competition preparation, educational seminars, and guidance with secondary and post-secondary admissions planning.
The school offers year‑round programming in core academic subjects.
Summer classes begin on July 6, and fall classes begin on September 7. Summer programs, camps, and institutes are also available.
Dr. Jenny Chan School for Education currently has two full-time staff and 10 part-time instructors, supported by an advisory and executive team that guides operations, growth, innovation, and educational programming. Dr. Chan remains actively involved with all three locations.
“We are continuing to expand our enrichment offerings in leadership, STEAM education, competitions and mentorship. Opening this location is an exciting milestone because it allows us to reach and support even more students and families.”
She adds, “I hope students gain not only academic knowledge, but also confidence, resilience, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning. I want them to leave feeling empowered to pursue their goals and believe in their potential.”
