DUNBAR VILLAGE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION

Message from President, Vicki Bell

Welcome to the first issue of Dunbar Life in 2026.

Winter is flying by! We are already midway through February, and this year Valentine’s Day coincides with the Family Day long weekend, making it extra special. The days are becoming noticeably longer, and we’ll soon be setting our clocks forward on March 8th to enjoy even more daylight. Spring break is just around the corner, followed by the Easter long weekend (April 3–6), which brings egg hunts, family brunches, and church services.

Our cover story features 30 Minute Hit Kerrisdale-Dunbar, run by new owner Tina Lau. Her lifelong involvement in sports and specifically human kinetics, has led to a welcoming studio designed specifically for women. The 30-minute boxing and kickboxing-based circuit delivers efficient, fullbody workouts with hands-on coaching and a supportive community where women of all ages build strength and confidence. Drop by 3516 West 41st Ave to try out the circuit or simply to welcome Tina to Dunbar!

We also spotlight Dunbar’s The UPS Store, at 3271 Dunbar Street, now under the ownership of Sandeep Nakra. Sandeep has kept familiar staff in place and is building strong ties in the neighbourhood. The store offers expanded shipping, printing, and mailbox services for

individuals and small businesses. Stop by and say hello and be sure to keep Sandeep in mind the next time you have a printing or mailing job.

On February 1st, the Vancouver Business Improvement Association launched its annual Love Your City campaign, celebrating local neighbourhoods across Vancouver throughout February. In Dunbar, watch for five heartshaped sweetheart candy installations around the village. Share a photo on Instagram, tag @loveyourcitycontest and @dunbar_village, and leave a love note on the contest page for a chance to win the citywide grand prize. Good luck and have fun playing tourist in your own city exploring new neighbourhoods and businesses.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Alma Animal Hospital at 3151 Dunbar Street to the Dunbar neighbourhood. Although the hospital is not within the DVBA’s boundaries, we recognize the importance of supporting and strengthening the entire community. And while you’re in the area, be sure to visit Wicked Café & Bakery, which is home to an irresistible selection of delicious treats.

Thank you so much for your ongoing support of local businesses in our community. The longer and brighter spring days are a beautiful time of year to explore the neighbourhood and discover the shops and services that help make Dunbar such a vibrant community.

Welcome to Dunbar Village

30 MINUTE HIT: Empowering Workouts for Women

With the holidays behind us and spring on the horizon, now is the perfect time to refocus on your health and feel strong again. Many women are looking for workouts that are effective, empowering, and efficient, and that’s the backbone of 30 Minute Hit. Designed specifically for women, this full-body workout blends cardio, strength, core, and skill training into one powerful, results-driven experience.

Tina Lau is the new owner of KerrisdaleDunbar’s 30 Minute Hit; she acquired the business in October 2025. Fitness has always been an important part of Tina’s life. She has a Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics and worked at a women’s fitness gym during her university years. Growing up, she played team sports, practiced Wing Chun Kung Fu, and over the past five years has taken up Olympic weightlifting and even competed at the World Masters last September.

“Although I stepped away from working in the fitness industry for two decades, I always felt drawn to a bigger purpose,” Tina explains.

“Many years ago, I wrote down my personal mission: ‘To serve, inspire, and ignite a ripple effect that transforms the lives of many.’ In my previous public-sector work, I wasn’t fully living that mission. Stepping into a business that blends movement, community, and women’s empowerment felt like the perfect way to bring it to life; it felt like everything had aligned.”

30 Minute Hit is a high-energy, boxing- and kickboxing-based circuit.

Tina notes, “Members love that it’s fast, fun, always challenging, and never boring. You don’t have to think, just show up, hit the circuit, and feel amazing. I’ve never found anything more efficient!”

“We provide more than a workout; 30 Minute Hit is a sanctuary for women to grow stronger, feel supported, and prioritize themselves. Every woman is welcome here, no matter her age, shape, background, or experience.”

“Physically, the workout builds strength and endurance, and improves balance, coordination, and mobility. Mentally, the benefits are huge: stress relief, better mood, mental clarity, and a real sense of accomplishment. And honestly, it’s just fun to hit things! Striking the pads and bags is incredibly therapeutic. Women leave their stress behind and walk out feeling lighter and energized.”

The boxing and kickboxing elements give women practical self-defence skills and a safe way to release tension and frustration. Many members report they feel mentally stronger, more capable, and better equipped to handle the pressures of daily life.

“Women of all ages and fitness levels can walk in exactly as they are and leave feeling more powerful.”

Members range from teens to their 70s, with most in their 30s through 60s. What makes 30 Minute Hit special is how seamlessly women at any fitness stage can train side by side.

Every new member gets one-on-one instruction to learn the circuit, proper technique, and feel comfortable using it. After that, 30 Minute Hit’s trainers are on the floor during the entire circuit, offering coaching, motivation, and real-time support, creating a hybrid of independent training with constant personalized guidance.

“The workout is high-intensity, but we meet you where you’re at; one of our trainers will guide you through modifications if needed and help you progress safely. Many women begin their fitness journey here because it feels welcoming and unintimidating.”

A designated kids’ area allows members to work out while their children are nearby. This is included with membership at no extra cost, allowing mothers to complete their workouts without having to arrange childcare.

Newcomers are always encouraged to try a free trial session.

“It’s a no-pressure way to experience what makes 30 Minute Hit special: the energy, the support, and the results. By the end, you’ll feel energized and accomplished, and you'll see firsthand why our members love making it part of their weekly routine. It’s fun, supportive, and totally doable no matter your fitness level.”

Tina adds, “I love that the workout is effective, efficient, and accessible, and that the community is at the heart of everything. The Kerrisdale-Dunbar location has such a loyal, inspiring group of women, and I felt excited to continue that legacy.”

“We see women transform not just physically, but in confidence, self-belief, and happiness. Watching members lift each other up, celebrate wins, overcome challenges, and build friendships is incredibly rewarding.”

Tina concludes, “I love hearing women say they feel stronger in every way: physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our goal is to make their 30 minutes here the best part of their day.

When they leave the studio as a stronger, more confident version of themselves, that energy creates a positive ripple effect in their lives and those around them. Knowing we’ve made even a small difference in someone’s day is everything.”

THE UPS STORE: Saving Customers Time and Money

Sandeep Nakra, the new owner of Dunbar’s The UPS Store, has brought enthusiasm and a strong commitment to customer service to the neighbourhood. Last year, he began looking for a business opportunity similar to that of his long-time friend, Manpal Singh Grewal, who owns and operates a UPS Store on Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. Together, the two friends explored available locations and discovered that the Dunbar store was for sale.

The opportunity was the right fit, and the store opened under their ownership in September 2025. Although the two are business partners, Manpal continues to work full-time at his Commercial Drive location.

Drawing on Manpal’s extensive knowledge of The UPS Store operations and customer service, Sandeep felt confident stepping into

this new venture. “Having Manpal as a partner made the transition much smoother,” Sandeep says. “He’s always there to offer advice and guidance.”

Sandeep also benefited from retaining one of the former Dunbar employees. This decision ensured customer continuity and helped maintain the familiar, friendly service that regulars had come to expect. Living in Burnaby, Sandeep was initially unfamiliar with the Dunbar neighbourhood, but he has quickly grown fond of the area. “The people here are very friendly and supportive,” he says. “I’m really enjoying getting to know both new and long-time customers.”

The connection to Manpal’s larger UPS Store provides additional advantages for customers. For example, Sandeep offers services such as

large-format poster printing and specialty print items that cannot be produced on-site at the Dunbar store. This allows customers to access a wider range of services without sacrificing the convenience of their neighbourhood store.

One particularly valuable service is The UPS Store’s mailbox rental.

International students, professionals, and anyone needing a short-term or flexible mailing address benefit from having a real street address rather than a post office box. This means packages can be accepted from all couriers, not just Canada Post. Customers enjoy 24-hour mailbox access, secure storage under lock and key, and full-service mail and package receiving during business hours, ensuring deliveries are never missed. Mail can also be held securely or forwarded to any location worldwide, making it a reliable solution for people on the move.

The UPS Store understands the challenges faced by small businesses and entrepreneurs and aims to serve as a one-stop support hub. While domestic and international shipping is what many people most associate with UPS, the store offers a wide range of additional

services. These include full-service packing, document finishing such as binding and laminating, online and in-store printing, black-and-white and colour copying, custom packaging for items of all sizes, shredding services, and many other practical business solutions.

Despite the rise of digital communication, faxes are not obsolete.

Customers can still send and receive faxes at The UPS Store, a service that remains essential for certain legal, medical, and government documents.

Common printing requests include business cards, posters, signs, booklets, and professional reports. The store also partners with visual designers to help local businesses launch, refresh, or rebrand their identity.

During recent Canada Post strikes, many people turned to UPS out of necessity and discovered competitive pricing and excellent service. As a result, a significant number of those customers have continued to use The UPS Store even after regular mail service resumed.

Sandeep has seen just about everything when it comes to shipping. “We’ve shipped some unusual items,” he says. Items have ranged from paintings and delicate household crockery to large electronics such as televisions and computers, as well as very small but valuable items like AirPods. He adds, “We help customers package them properly using bubble wrap, Styrofoam, strong packing materials, and double boxing when needed.”

Currently, passport photos are the store’s most popular service.

Parents appreciate custom name stickers for school-age children, a simple solution to prevent water bottles and lunch bags from disappearing. The store also produces identification badges for volunteers and event staff, schools, non-profits, and community events.

Open Monday through Saturday with convenient hours, The UPS Store is designed to fit into busy schedules. Sandeep is deeply grateful for the Dunbar community.

“The store has been busy, and we are happy to serve our customers,” he says. “When they are happy, I feel like I’ve done something well.” He adds, “The people I meet are very kind. I’m very happy to serve them and do anything I can to assist. I look forward to welcoming everyone into The UPS Store to meet me.”

SOUTHLANDS MULTIAGE CHILDCARE

The Snow Rabbit appeared without warning on a rainy morning. She did not arrive alone; by her side was the Fox. Almost instantly, the children gathered around, curious. Names were chosen with confidence and delight: the Snow

Rabbit became Clover, and the Fox, simply, Foxy. What began as a moment of wonder quickly transformed into purpose. The children asked the most important question of all, how do we take care of Clover?

This moment unfolded at the Steveston Society of Children’s Centres’ (SSOCC) Southlands Multiage Childcare location, a Reggio-inspired environment where naturebased learning and social-emotional literacy form the foundation of the curriculum. At Southlands, projects are not simply activities; they are vehicles for teaching the socialemotional skills that underpin academic success, mental wellness, and strong communication skills. The Snow Rabbit project stands out for its clarity, simplicity, and emotional depth.

“Clover needs a shelter,” Marissa announced with certainty. Her classmates quickly agreed. “We need sticks,” Dakota added.

Within moments, a plan emerged. Using bricks and sticks, the children would build a den to protect Clover from the elements. They would also gather milk,

water and carrots to help her survive the winter. Children discussed the plan and then drew what the den should look like.

Over the next week, eight children and their teacher, Gurneel, worked together with focused determination. Bricks were collected from the garden, carried one by one by small hands learning how to navigate weight, balance, and teamwork. Walls were built, collapsed, and rebuilt. Through trial and error, an essential part of experiential learning, the children began to understand what stability truly meant.

With a class size of just eight students, collaboration unfolded naturally and meaningfully. The children faced real-world problems together: How do we move this heavy pile safely and without getting too tired? How do we protect our fingers? How big does the den need to be? As these questions arose, the project paused so the children could measure Clover’s ears, compare brick heights, count bricks per row, and calculate how many more bricks were needed to ensure Clover could stand comfortably inside her shelter.

Pamela Wallberg, curriculum consultant for SSOCC, describes this process as an intentional and experiential learning process. “Project

work is always a bit of a dance between child excitement, the desire to jump right in without planning, and the pauses that an educator will insert into the project to help the children clarify their ideas, adjust their plan, and then develop any skills required to execute the plan. These are executive functioning skills being built in real time, in a way that is deliberate, engaging, and joyful.”

When the walls were finally high enough and the sticks carefully layered into a makeshift roof, the children stepped back to admire their work. Clover was declared safe and snug in her new den. But the children instinctively understood that safety alone was not enough. A small, vulnerable bunny also needed care, warmth, and love.

Together, they purchased a carton of whipping cream, two water bottles, and two large carrots. These offerings were placed gently beside Clover’s shelter. The task was now deeply personal.

“It’s like I’m Clover’s mommy now,” Emilia said softly as she carefully laid out the carrots and tucked a blanket around the bunny. “Clover, you are my bunny. It’s not scary outside in the dark, you have your safe bed now.”

Moments like this are not accidental at Southlands. Gurneel explains that empathy is cultivated intentionally and practiced daily. “Caring for the garden, the insects outside, the animals in the forest, and even the plants and pet slugs in the classroom, these are all planned experiences that build relationships between our students and other living things. Those relationships naturally evolve into moments where the children demonstrate sophisticated levels of empathy, compassion, and collaboration. The more opportunities children have to practice social responsibility and care, the stronger their social-emotional skills become.”

For a brief time, Clover was content. Then came the first heavy rainstorm of the season. The next morning, the children rushed outside to check on their Snow Rabbit. What they found startled them; the stick roof had leaked, and Clover’s blanket was soaked through. The disappointment was momentary. What

followed was resilience. The class refused to give up.

A new plan was immediately formed. This time, the roof would be built stronger with leaves, ferns, and cedar boughs. Would it work? That remains to be seen. But what was already clear is that the project itself had accomplished something far greater than weatherproof engineering. It had become a living classroom for empathy, problem-solving, collaboration, perseverance, and creative thinking.

The Snow Rabbit project illustrates how a Reggio-inspired program can be a powerful platform for social-emotional learning. This learning isn’t confined to worksheets or predetermined outcomes. It lives in shared effort, in real-world problem-solving, in emotional connection, and in the quiet pride children feel when they see their ideas come to life.
