Welcome to the spring edition of Dunbar Life. The return of sunny days, spring flowers and colourful street banners bring fresh energy to the community. The warmer weather beckons us to get outdoors to partake in gardening, cycling, walking, tackling home projects, or planning a weekend getaway. May also brings Mother’s Day, the Victoria Day long weekend, and graduation celebrations for many local families.
This issue’s cover story features Alta Vista Animal Hospital, recognized for its compassionate care and strong client relationships. Inside, we share Dr. Munjal’s journey and his expansion into the new Alma Animal Hospital.
All Nations Stamp & Coin enters a new chapter as Firmin Wyndels takes the helm of this 77-year-old Dunbar institution, continuing its long-standing legacy in stamp and coin collecting.

After several years of planning, our partnership with the City of Vancouver to develop the new plaza at West 27th and Dunbar has been approved and will move forward this May. Backed by strong support from the business community, this project will create a new gathering space for Dunbar.
As the plaza becomes active with events and programming, the community is encouraged to use and shape the space. Feedback opportunities will be available as the neighbourhood adapts.

ALTA VISTA ANIMAL HOSPITAL: Compassionate Care for Dunbar’s Pets

Dr. Parveen Munjal’s love for animals began on his family’s farm in India, where caring for them, he recalls, “wasn’t just a responsibility; it was a way of life.” These early experiences instilled a profound respect and compassion that ultimately guided his career path in veterinary medicine.
After earning his degree from Punjab Agricultural University and furthering his studies at Oklahoma State University, Dr. Munjal practiced for ten years in India before moving to North America in 2004. In 2008, he purchased Alta Vista Animal Hospital, creating a practice built on trust, care, and genuine connection.

They note that the staff takes the time to clearly explain treatment options without pressure. Clients also appreciate the opportunity to discuss different treatment plans with consideration for financial constraints.
Alta Vista makes every effort to be there for its patients and families, especially in urgent situations.
While most patients are cats and dogs, there have been some unusual cases over the years, including the treatment of a serval, a wild cat species. These experiences highlight the clinic’s expertise and its willingness to take on unique challenges.
“The success of Alta Vista comes down to hard work, dedication, and an incredible team,” Dr. Munjal says. The staff are empathetic, professional, and deeply committed to every patient. He emphasizes that clients also play an essential role. “Caring for animals is often a partnership. We truly see our clients as part of the care team.”
Since its early days as a single-veterinarian practice, the animal hospital has expanded into a multi-veterinarian team. A new chapter is unfolding as Dr. Munjal’s son, Dr. Vazul Munjal,
Pinky
recently completed his veterinary education and is currently gaining advanced clinical experience in New York City. He is expected to join the practice in 2026, bringing modern training and new perspectives.
In addition, Dr. Munjal has expanded services with the opening of a new location, Alma Animal Hospital, to better serve the Dunbar community and Vancouver’s west side neighbourhoods.
Alta Vista’s partnerships with organizations such as Lower Mainland Humane Society,
Paws for Hope, Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association, and other local rescue groups have strengthened over the years. These partnerships allow the clinic to support more animals in need while deepening ties to the community.
The animal hospital regularly sees dedicated pet owners going above and beyond, emotionally, physically, and financially, to ensure their animals receive the best possible care. “Being part of that journey, and supporting those relationships, has been one of the most rewarding aspects of how our practice has grown,” Dr. Munjal says. Veterinary medicine has also evolved, with ongoing advancements in diagnostics, treatments, and overall standards of care, allowing pets to benefit from higher-quality care than ever before.
“We encourage pet owners to bring their pets in for quick visits, whether it’s to step on the scale, say hello to the staff, or enjoy a treat.”
“Over time, these visits make a real difference, especially for anxious animals, as they begin to associate the clinic with comfort, friendliness, and, of course, the occasional cookie. It’s one of the small but meaningful ways we stay connected to the neighbourhood and build lasting relationships with both pets and their owners.”
There are countless heartwarming stories at Alta Vista, but one in particular stands out. Many clients fondly remember Pinky, the beloved resident cat. Though she no longer lives at the animal hospital, she remains a cherished part of Alta Vista’s family.
Pinky was originally brought in by an elderly couple and diagnosed with diabetes, a condition requiring intensive care. Unable to manage her treatment, the couple faced the heartbreaking possibility of euthanasia. The clinic stepped in, determined to find another solution.
When attempts to rehome her fell through, she stayed at Alta Vista and won over the staff with her strong and spirited personality. Eventually, she formed a close bond with a team member who welcomed her into her
home. Today, Pinky lives a comfortable and happy life, occasionally returning for visits that delight the staff who once cared for her.
Stories like Pinky’s reflect Alta Vista’s broader philosophy: treating every pet as family and every client with respect.
At the same time, the realities of a busy practice bring challenges, particularly around wait times and urgent care demands. The clinic views this feedback as an opportunity to improve and adapt, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of both pets and their owners.
That same connection that first led Dr. Munjal into veterinary medicine continues to guide his work today. “Knowing that families trust us with their beloved animals and being part of their animals’ lives is incredibly meaningful.”
He adds, “Thank you for your continued support over the years. It means everything to care for your pets and be part of this community.”

A New Beginning for An Iconic

All Nations is an iconic business that many stamp and coin collectors have visited over the years. Located at the north end of Dunbar Street near West 41st Avenue, it has been a long-time destination for enthusiasts. After 26 years of ownership, Brian Grant Duff has retired and sold the 77-year-old business to fellow philatelist Firmin Wyndels.

Firmin and Brian have known each other for over 20 years. Firmin explains, “Stamp collecting is an international hobby, but it is still a very tight-knit community, especially here in B.C.”
“It’s important to honour All Nations’ long-standing reputation and make sure we are respectfully moving forward.”
“I am getting to know the history of All Nations and the clientele who have made this business a success,” he says.

full-time staff. He lives just north of the city with his wife, Rachel, and their four children. In 2021, he took over the 52-year-old Weeda Stamps and says, “I am leaning on what I learned the first time around.”
“Collecting is in my blood.”
Stamps have been a part of Firmin’s life since he was five years old. He was introduced to the hobby by his grandfather, and by 18, he was taking tables at local stamp shows, an interest that steadily evolved into a career.
“I have been very fortunate to have a supportive wife and understanding (sort of) kids who tolerate my endeavours,” Firmin says. “Besides stamps, I have a passion for collecting studio pottery from B.C. and Alberta potters.”
Firmin will be the face of All Nations although he won’t be there daily. A right-hand man will be at the store, becoming a familiar face for visitors.
Following the transfer of ownership, Firmin plans only subtle changes while he familiarizes himself with the operations and customers. “There is no sense in trying to fix something that isn’t broken,” he says, “but at the same time, I can lean on the practices of both the Victoria and Vancouver operations to find what works best and improve both.”
New inventory comes from a variety of sources, often from estates or collectors deciding to downsize their collections. Firmin has been fortunate to have individuals and businesses looking out for him, referring collections his way from across Canada, knowing the original owners will be treated fairly.
All Nations will continue to focus on buying, selling, and auctioning stamps, collections, and postal history.
Firmin notes, “We are constant buyers and will offer retail sales and auction sales of all sorts of stamps, coins, historical documents, ephemera and more. I have a particular soft spot for postal history and postcards.”
Are you thinking about selling your collection or perhaps just a few pieces? This can be the right move if you've gone as far as you planned with your collection. Sharing your material with other collectors who have been searching at length for material you possess can be very gratifying.
Connections are typically made by referral, via a phone call or an email to All Nations. Firmin points out that while there are catalogues that can give the value of every stamp ever printed, knowing the value largely depends on experience and understanding the market value to the end customer.
Interest in collecting spiked during the pandemic, and many collectors have remained in the hobby, rekindling a spark from years past.
“So much of what we offer is real, tangible history—small pieces of paper and coins that are history in our hands,” Firmin explains. “Each stamp is a miniature piece of artwork; many collectors are driven by an emotional connection and fascination with where something has been or the history behind how
it came to be. There is a little Indiana Jones in each collector—the thrill of the hunt, looking for an elusive treasure, if only in their eyes.”
“One of the most interesting parts of this business is you never know what you will come across, from an old stash of coins to a trunk of love letters sent back from a soldier during the war. You never know what will come in next!”
The stamp and coin collecting demographic is largely baby boomers, and how to appeal to the younger market is a question Firmin often hears. He believes there is an opportunity to reach younger collectors through social media, particularly by focusing on the history behind each collectible.
“Although there are many distractions for kids, I think if the seed of collecting is planted, and there are helpful resources easily accessible, there will be an uptick in collecting.”
