INTRODUCTION
Grande Parco Forlanini
The study area of this project is Grande Parco Forlanini, a metropolitan park between Forlanini station and the Idroscalo, with over 250 hectares, can be understood by its complex narration, with different layers of fabrics and actors overlapping. This pictures depict some key elements of the area: the highway (seen from two different points of view on the street), the Lambro RIver banks, Cascina Taverna (left picture) and Cascina Casanova (right picture).
The aim of this project is to understand the relations of different actors and sectors in the area, and use urban design as a tool to develop the Grande Parco Forlanini Gateway System, respecting its multiplicity and creating a system that can enhance the area’s identities and improve its layout.
We focused our attention on the rural and historic identity of the middle part of the park, speciically trying to develop a connection between the highway and the heart of the park: Cascinas (here Taverna and Casanova).

LOCATION Grande Parco Forlanini
Italy
The area of the Park, the result of the composition of green areas used for different uses consolidated over time, extends from the eastern railway belt, where the current Forlanini FN station stands, to the border with the municipality of Segrate and is divided into two parts from the Highway: the west part destined for agriculture and the east part of about 53 ha which represents the real use park. The conception of the park dates back to the irst post-war years and its construction pursues the intent of allocating a large green area immersed in the rural landscape to different uses. After the mid-nineties, the green policy deined by the Municipality aimed at safeguarding the natural environments and agricultural areas through the planning of a green belt, consisting of a succession of urban parks including the Forlanini park (which became part of the South Park in 1990), which represented the strategic piece of the east strip.

SITE ANALYSIS Grande Parco Forlanini
The study area, inserted in the border of two municipalities, is a complex territory, ranging from relatively dense urban fabrics, to open recreational green areas, agriculture lands and the huge void created by Linate Airport. With a site analysis, it is possible to identify that the area is enclosed by strong man made physical borders, in forms of railway, high trafic roads (both on the site level and on highway), fences and walls, which are strongly present trough its entire extension, and the Idroscalo itself. Natural elements, such as the Lambro River, enhances the boundaries of the area, challenging its uniication as a wholesome. It is also possible to observe the corrosion effect of the build environment over the natural open areas, which leads ones attention to the importance of the development of strategic policies in order to preserve what is remaining, guaranteeing the Grande Parco Forlanini’s importance on Milan’s natural complex.
Through the analysis of the current uses of the entire area it was possible to identify ive different prevailing groups of activities on the site: – Airport facilities and services: a network that has Linate Airport as the main actor, with several services giving direct support to it; – Agriculture: the presence of several ields and historic Cascinas on the site, in a resemblance of less urbanized times, still trying to resist to the rapidly development of the area; – Sports facilities: important sports facilities and associations are present in the site, such as Milan and Saini Sports Center, AS Rugby Milan, among others.
– Parks: two important green public spaces are present in the site – Parco Forlanini and the Idroscalo. The irst, as a romantic park, with the presence of open green ields, lake, paths and some recreational facilities. SITE ANALYSIS Grande Parco Forlanini
The landscaping of the Park enhances the centuries-old agricultural structure, in the still present traces of the Teresian Cadastre (1760), enhancing the still appreciable historical and landscape structure. The main access road to the park is the Taverna private road, to the east of which a golf course was built in 2013. Via Corelli also leads to the Saini Sports Center (16.6 hectares), an integral part of the Park, whose southern boundary consists of viale Forlanini, which can be climbed over through a cycle-pedestrian walkway that connects it with the Forlanini-Monluè neighborhood, Taliedo and the Linate hamlet. The park has a simple design, consisting of large agricultural areas, canals, tree-lined and asphalted avenues, expanses of meadows and is characterized by the presence of wooded groups of a single species, both evergreen and deciduous. To the north-east is the Salesina lake, near the homonymous farmhouse, a stretch of water created by redeveloping a quarry owned by the municipality. The maintenance of agricultural functions until the last decade has ensured the survival of some ancient farmhouses. Over the years, the Municipality has taken possession of most of the areas, although the Park territory has in the meantime been partially eroded, as well as by the interventions mentioned above, by some parking lots near the Novegro exhibition area.

URBAN ANALYSIS CASCINAS
CASCINAS The Grande Parco Forlanini is the urban park that contains the largest number of historic centers in the city, there are up to 11 of them. Some in good condition, others in very bad condition. The developing of this concept made us think about the future image and the identity we wanted to give to the Park, so after inding a proper structure and communication, we focused on the meaning of every single knot that formed while trying to link every rural building in a strict manner. Then what was key for us became clear: reshape the rural identity of the park giving it a stronger image. In other words, we want to embrace the Cascinas’ uniqueness and renew them by making them the fulcrum of a new set of realities which will be shaped around the Cascinas themselves.

URBAN ANALYSIS LANDSCAPE | Existing trees and plants
Poplar, (genus Populus), genus of some 35 species of trees in the willow fomdy (Salicaceae), native to the Northern Hemisphere. The poplar species native to North America are divided into three loose groups: the cttonwoods, the aspens, and the balsam poplars.
Elms are deciduous and semi-deciduous trees comprising the lowering plant genus Ulmus in the plant family Ulmaceae. The genus irst appeared in the Miocene geological period about 20 million years ago, originating in what is now central Asia. These trees lourished and spread over most of the Northern Hemisphere, inhabiting the temperate and tropical-montane regions of North America and Eurasia.
The Leyland cypress, is a fast-growing coniferous evergreen tree much used in horticulture, primarily for hedges and screens. Even on sites of relatively poor culture, plants have been known to grow to heights of 15 metres in 16 years. Their rapid, thick growth means they are sometimes used to achieve privacy, but such use can result in disputes with neighbours whose own property becomes overshadowed.
An oak is a tree or shrub in the genus Quercus of the beech family, Fagaceae. The genus Quercus is native to the Northern Hemisphere, and includes deciduous and evergreen species extending from cool temperate to tropical latitudes in the Americas, Asia, Europe, and North Africa.
Tilia is a genus of about 30 species of trees or bushes, native throughout most of the temperate Northern Hemisphere. They are commonly called lime trees, or lime bushes, although they are not closely related to the tree that produces the lime fruit. The genus occurs in Europe and eastern North America, but the greatest species diversity is found in Asia.
Noted for its enormous owers and excellent disease resistance, Monarda ‘Jacob Cline’ (Bee Balm) is a clump-forming perennial boasting vibrant red lowers, borne in dense, globular terminal heads. Blooming for weeks from mid summer to early fall, they rest upon a whorl of decorative dark-purplish bracts and attract scores of butteries and hummingbirds.
Cedrus deodara is a species of cedar native to the western Himalayas in Eastern Afghanistan, Northern Pakistan. It is a large evergreen coniferous tree reaching 40–50 m tall, exceptionally 60 m with a trunk up to 3 m in diameter. It has a conic crown with level branches and drooping branchlets.
Eurybia macrophylla ‘Twilight’ (big-leaf aster ‘Twilight’) is an aster noted for their large basal leaves. It is sometimes planted in wooded areas more for its foliage effect than for its fall lowering which is sometimes sparse. The blooms are lat-topped clusters of lowers with violet to pale blue rays and yellow centers bloom on sticky, glandular lowers stalks in August and September.
Carpinus betulus, commonly known as the European or common hornbeam, is a hornbeam native to Western Asia and central, eastern, and southern Europe, including southern England. It requires a warm climate for good growth, and occurs only at elevations up to 600 metres. The wood is heavy and hard, and is used for tools and building constructions.
Molinia caerulea ‘Windspiel’ is a delicate ornamental grass wth green foliage, maturing to a gentle honey brown by autumn. Inlorescences of tiny bead-like lowers and seed cases appear on vertical, upright stems in summer. It’s a fantastic choice for making a partially transparent screen, through which you can view other plants or the sky. Grow Molinia caerulea ‘Windspiel’ in moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Remove dead foliage in spring.
Pyrus calleryana, or the Callery pear, is a species of pear tree native to China and Vietnam, in the family Rosaceae. It grows to 5 to 8 m tall, often with a conical to rounded crown. The leaves are oval, 4 to 8 cm long, glossy dark green above. The white, ive-petaled lowers are about 2 to 2.5 cm (3⁄4 to 1 in) in diameter. They are produced abundantly in early spring, before the leaves expand fully.
Deschampsia cespitosa, commonly known as tufted hairgrass or tussock grass, is a perennial tufted plant in the grass family Poaceae. Distribution of this species is widespread including the eastern and western coasts of North America, parts of South America, Eurasia and Australia.
Acer palmatum, commonly known as Japanese maple, palmate maple, is a species of woody plant native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeast Russia. Many different cultivars of this maple have been selected and they are grown worldwide for their large variety of attractive forms, leaf shapes, and spectacular colors.
Product InformationAlso known as masterwort or Hattie’s Pincushion, astrantias are a clump-forming, hardy perennial which are a favourite of many garden designers, ideal for shady, moist areas of the garden. One of the darker varieties of red astrantia, ‘Claret’ is ideal in any cottage-garden style or they can also be grown in more contemporary garden styles where their colour can be fully appreciated. 20

GAT E WAY C O N C E P T RESHAPING RURALITY
Our concept focuses on reshaping rurality in the sense that we enhanced the Cascinas as a key element of Milan social and cultural history. Around them we developed a gateway system that becomes the magnet of the whole park. By exploring the rural identity of the park, we tried to enhance and upgrade it with a more modern connotation and adding a new concept of biodiversity to the sould of the park itself. This intervention aims to integrate better Grande Parco Forlanini into the urban tissue that is constantly transforming around it and to gain the most users attraction possible.

It relects the character of the “courtyard” typology, typical of Lombard agricultural planning. It now has elements in ruins, given the strong state of neglect. It is made up of some residential buildings (including one of the oldest buildings) and a stable with arcades on two sides, unfortunately in poor condition. Construction period: sec. XVI Current use (whole property): farmhouse
Speciic type: farmhouse Structural coniguration: The farmhouse is located inside the Forlanini Park, in the immediate vicinity of the Casanova farmhouse, which is a larger agricultural nucleus. The complex of the Casanova and Taverna farmhouses is in ruins. It develops around a courtyard area and consists of a main building with an L-shaped plan and a large stable with a portico, the roof of which has now collapsed. The appearance of the facades and the typology recall the rural structures that were present in the plain: The elevations are simple and regular. It is a building with a load-bearing structure in solid bricks and internal brick walls. The windows are made of wood. The roof is made up of wooden trusses with overhanging roof tiles. Still partially inhabited, the farmhouse beneits from the surrounding environment, an important green lung not far from the city center.

GAT E WAY C O N C E P T HISTORICAL MAPS 19 6 5 M A P We found it interesting to go back to the past to see where we could have started our journey to reshape rurality, so we analyzed the maps of the site area from 1930 to 2020 and we decided to take the 1965 map in order to take the Forlanini Park back at its constitution. We used this coniguration as a net that helped us to understand how to recreate a new biodiversity in the area so that every zone has a different kind of vegetation, always taking into account the seasonal changes and need and the place in which we are. This distribution made us consider that the past is an essential element to which we need to refer from time to time or return in order to better understand the present and help us build a more conscious future. It also helped us understand which was the initial shape of the two Cascinas and their relationship with the exhisting surrounding.
The pictures below show some glimpse of the actual coniguration of the Forlanini neighboorhood and Airport in the middle 1960s.

GAT E WAY C O N C E P T PATHWAYS DIFFERENTIATION
PATHWAYS In this focus we differentiated the existing pathways from the new ones we created, adding also the matrix of the historical map that we used to divide and cathegorize the meadows. We will see in the following slides how we dealt with the pathways classiication and the meadows’ plants for our concept.

GAT E WAY C O N C E P T PATHWAYS CLASSIFICATION
PATHWAYS In this focus we higlighted the importance of pathways in our concept. We enhanced the exhisting ones by changing their function from single use to both cycled and pedestrian users mostly in the area that goes from under the highway to our inner manet area in order to create a system of infrastructures that connect better each way of the park.

MEADOWS / PLANTS Part of our concept is the relationship between the park, history and biodiversity. The aim was to create a new space for biodiversity which would be near people, inside an existing park and coherent with the park’s past soul. With this in mind we made a deep research on which plants were the most suitable to coexist in Milan’s weather conditions and atmosphere and we developed almost 40 different plants’ species in detail in the following slides. RESHAPING AREA 1
STRATEGIES
2 3
As part of the development of the Grande Parco Forlanini, three strategies were taken into consideration: Virtual Path, Living Path and Community Hub. These strategies are applied to the relation between each of them and also on the Park’s existing infrastructures, envisioning the reinforcement of its green and historical identity. On the next pages, we will present how we dealt with the implementation of these strategies, applied in different areas of the park. We present, for each strategy, its application on the Parks relations and also its users.
1. VIRTUAL PATH - The Highway 2. LIVING PATH - The Connector 3. COMMUNITY HUB - The Inner Hub

GAT E WAY S T R AT E GY V I R T U A L PAT H - The H i g h w a y Blending history and technological advancement in the abondoned area under the highway, creates an interactive space that attracts people of all ages both for Augmented and VIrtual Reality shows and a permanent open museum that follows the historical path of MIlan and its Parks.
OPPORTUNITY Gives a new dimension to the otherwise abondened stretch under the highway which projects future opputunities related to any event happening. The link to Lambro river and Cascinas is beautiful because of its natural landscape design.
STRATEGIES

Renovating the abondoned highway stretch and replacing it with Augmented and Virtual Reality stretch which displays the histrological importance and background of Milan acting like a virtual museum. This stretch is designed keeping in mind the 2026 Milan Olympics, the same AR/VR displaying history of Milan, can be used to advertise the Olympics or even to watch games and performances.

OPPORTUNITY - Gives the shortest and beautiful journey route from the highway to the community hub. - Developement of the Lambro river banks.
STRATEGIES - The path allows the user to access the community hub with ease, but at the same time welcomes many services that might be helpful on the journey. - Sheltered seating places between the thick vegetation gives an atmosphere transition to a user from the highway, building curiosity of what he could look forward to ind on his journey. - Bringing life near the Lambro river banks which is the most overlooked aspect of the entire park. Has viewpoints overlooking onto the Lambro at a raised terrain which is supported by seatings on the other side.

GAT E WAY S T R AT E GY C O M M U N I T Y H U B - The I n n e r H u b
With the aim of tracing back the park to it’s RURALITY, community life plays a very important role. Converting Grande Parco Forlanini from a park which people would visit for walk or to spend some leisure time to a park which encourages and supports community activities and interaction on an everyday basis. We focused our attention mainly to the relationship between Cascina Taverna and Cascina Casanova, creating bothe a visive and functional connection between them. SECTION LINE
OPPORTUNITY - Provides a stage for local farmers and the general public to work hand in hand with the whole farming and harvesting process, particularly linked to the community space created in Cascina Casanova. - Generates employment oppurtunities. - Allows people to stay close to their roots and also acts as therapy with the different workshops hosted mainly in Cascina Taverna. - The exhibition space linked to both Cascinas attracts many business oppurtunities making the park a landmark on many levels.
STRATEGIES
USERS
- Using the existing Cascinas infrustructure and converting them to community spaces. - Tracing back the history of the Cascinas, proposing “Memoryframe” structures that remind the visitors of the erased form of Cascina Taverna surroundings. Wireframe structures act as functional spill out spaces. - Amphitheatre (The Core/Magnet) situated at a region providing a visual connect between the two Cascinas, acts as a heart to the entire system. The seatings are desgned by playing with terrains and undulations, which relects back into nativeness and rurality once again. - Basic services supporting the visitors like washrooms, bike stations, changing rooms and lockers.

G P F A N D T H E GAT E WAY SYS T E M USERS ANALYSIS - Personas As part of this project analysis, it was created a ‘persona’ study. As a strategy usually applied in marketing researches, here ictional users of the Grande Parco Forlanini were developed in order to provide a better understanding of how the different layers of the park could be used by its visitors, and in which form they could integrate among themselves. They will be a staple of the design strategy, in order to develop better decisions for the entire program.

CONCLUSION FINAL REFLECTIONS
To sum up, we chose the Cascinas as our main focus around which we developed a network of pathways that connects the key elements such as highway and Lambro river. The park and its facilities are developed as a distributive surface around a magnetic central gateway system, which turns to be the main attractor. The reason why we developed this idea is mostly because we want to give new importance to such a significant Milanese social element as Cascinas and by doing that we need to explore the existing rural identity of the park and upgrade it with a more attractive connotation, in order to perfectly integrate it into the urban tissue that is constantly transforming all over around.
