Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? I've had two and a half careers. Stumbled upon both and then realized this is what I really enjoyed doing. The first one, as a cricket journalist, began on a wet London day at Lord's. The entire experience had such an impact that once back in Karachi, a month later I could not sleep till I penned it all down. That started my cricket journalist career for the first 15 years. Then came the LUX Style Awards and I went into the corporate sector to front the External Communications function for Unilever Pakistan. I stumbled into it but really enjoyed brand communication. It's a high in itself and that led me to the half bit of my two and half career; again brand communication but from the agency side. I'm now the CEO of Talking Point. What was your “aha!” moment? The day the penny dropped about cricket being a flawed and fixed game. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? Yes. And acted upon it.
What was the best advice that your mentor gave you? Never let ego get in the way of work. What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life? My family My work My travel opportunities What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list? I don't have a bucket list. I take life as it comes What does nobody tell you about being the boss? You have to learn to absorb the errors of your team with calmness and equanimity.
"NEVER LET EGO GET IN THE WAY OF WORK."
When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it? Every year brings its own challenges and each time I control the urge to throw in the towel by telling myself never to take the easy way out; that it's so difficult to nurture and build and so easy to lose control and kick the bucket. So easy to shout and storm out and so difficult to reign in your temper and work hard at ensuring that mistakes are acknowledged and rectified. It has to come from within this need to build and nurture; from so deep within that, you're willing to put aside your ego, your temper, your hurt, your pride and think only of the job to be done and do it to the best of your ability. It's an ability I learned from working with the best at Unilever and has stood me in good stead.
Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? Too many to list. Describe a day in your life Early start with yoga and healthy breakfast. Always a busy day managing 17 to 20 brands, family commitments, my son's various activities, minimal social evenings and then deep sleep
Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…” Quietly in charge. What did you learn from your biggest failure? That even the minutest task needs a whole lot of spadework. Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with? David Cameron, to ask him what he was thinking when he let a referendum decide his country's future. What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours? Play fair and be honest.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT
BEHIND
THE BRAND!
W
We speak to the super talented team behind Qalamkar What is the story behind Qalamkar? Our family has been in the textile business for decades. We have a history in yarn and raw cloth. We then wanted to do integration and start processing. So this has been never new to us and has a great emotional value in all our hearts. Describe Qalamkar in three words?

Traditional, contemporary and timeless. How did your interest in fashion designing begin? Clothes have always been our passion; we used to design them for our family and friends. After a great response, clients started pouring in which made us realize the potential that our designs had and from there we gradually built
QALAMKAR IS VERY POPULAR AMONGST THE WOMEN IN PAKISTAN BECAUSE THEY RESPECT EACH WOMANS INDIVIDUALISTIC STYLE AND THEY DONT USE THEM AS TOOLS TO ACCENTUATE THE BRAND
our brand. What makes Qalamkar different from other high end luxury wear brands? We feel that not many brands are providing their clientele premium quality fabric and Luxury wear at affordable prices and this is what we think sets us apart from other high end luxury wear brands.
Where do you derive your inspiration from? We draw inspiration for our collections from different things. Sometimes it’s the surroundings that inspire us, other times it just comes with in. And I won’t keep myself from saying that at times the work of fellow artists, and creativity of all kinds can also ring a bell. Who do you think will be the perfect muse for this brand? Keeping in mind our previous collections, we have chosen Iqra Aziz to be the face of the brand because we feel her aesthetic and aura is just as traditional yet contemporary as our designs and collections. Which one is your favourite creation by far? My favourite outfit is feroza from Eid collection because of the white color and the traditional and festive look but very wearable at the same time. Also people absolutely loved it and we felt such incredible love from our customers for this one. Describe your clientele. What kind of women carry your outfits? We cater to all women. We respect each woman’s individualistic style. Women who own their style and not let clothes (brands or fashion) define who they are but using them as tool to accentuate their beauty. What is your favorite piece of clothing from the latest luxury formal collection? We have put a lot of hard work into creating all these pieces hence we adore all of them but the “Navy Blue” one is my favorite. We love the color and how the embellishments compliment the whole outfit. What are the pros and cons of being a fashion designer? Pros: It’s an absolute contentment to have our work appreciated and adorned by our lovely clients. Cons: The most difficult part is the quality check since there’s so much out sourcing going on with new techniques pouring in from different parts of the world and like a writer’s block sometimes you also get a designer’s block and it can then take a lot of research to come out of it. Also this work needs a lot of attention to the tiniest details.
Any advice for an aspiring fashion designer? Or someone in the same field as you? We believe one should stay true to their aesthetics, be able to identify their niche and stay as original as they can. Where do you wish to see Qalamkar in the next 5 years? Qalamkar aims to keep on providing our clientele with inspiring designs and vibrant colors to Pakistani Women while ensuring no compromise on quality.
