Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? Oh it was something that I always wanted. It took me a long time to make it happen though. Turning your passion into a career is always tough but once you start going down that road, I don’t think there’s any looking back. What was your “aha!” moment? 2011! I was playing a serious role and improvised a line which led to the entire hall laughing and clapping. That’s when I realized the hold a joke made onstage can have on people. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? My whole life now is a result of that consideration. But I don’t think I can do anything else apart from this. Comedy and acting is all I know. Maybe I’ll do something on the side but I’m here to stay (IA) When was a time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it? Actually, I often have moments where I feel discouraged but I don’t let them last. It could be after a show that I didn’t perform my best in or when a project I’ve worked really hard on gets shelved or if I make a wrong decision. It happens. And I’m an over thinker so I get anxious easily. But I’ve learned to live with it. I move on to the next thing as soon as I can. What was the best advice that your mentor gave you? My mother once said to me that don’t let all this get to your head or to your heart. It won’t last forever. I enjoy my life as it is and I’m hopeful but I try hard not get too attached to the idea of people applauding me.
That you won’t always be loved or even liked. Sometimes you’ll have to be tough and you need to keep your emotions and friendship with someone out of the way. I find that dichotomy very challenging. Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? There are many. There’s this misconception that female bosses are not good to female employees and I feel that mindset itself becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Most women whom I’ve worked with have been great bosses. My first boss Naheed Memon was so great that even now when we meet, we meet like old friends. She’s an independent woman who pretty much lives alone but she’s so badass I love it. But she’s also real and you can have a heart to heart with her, which is so important.
Describe a day in your life. Nowadays it starts with the husband’s alarm clock ringing at 8.30 am. I wake up, send him off and if I’m sleepy and don’t have work, I’ll take a nap after he leaves. Then I’d get up and do some "MY MOTHER household chores, leave for work or work from home. In the evening, if I’m home and ONCE SAID not shooting or having rehearsals with the TO ME THAT Khawatoons, my husband and I will spend DON’T LET some time with the family then go out or call ALL THIS friends over. What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life? 1. My family 2. My husband 3. My freedom What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list? So many! I’ve a list of places I need to visit. I like to spend most of my money on travelling, not things as such. Work wise, I’d love to play someone who’s real like me, and not some stereotypical character that I’m often offered. What does nobody tell you about being the boss?
Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…” Resilient, passionate, kind and fierce.
What did you learn from your biggest failure? That life will go on. You’ve got to pick up the pieces and move on. Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with? Jacinda Ardern! I think she’s a slap on the face to anyone and everyone who likes to believe that women are bad leaders/bad bosses. What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours? If your family doesn’t agree with your way of life, explain it to them again and again. As long as you’re not really hurting anyone, do as you please. But remember to be kind. Sometimes we become cruel when we really want something, kindness will always last longer than success alone. 2019

How has Mehdi Couture evolved in the past few years? Mehdi was launched in 2004 with a mega show in Lahore. After that with all the hard work and the love from this industry and clients, Mehdi achieved the top slot in Pakistan. With growing business within Pakistan and internationally we have come a long way and evolved as a signature bridal brand. What sparked your interest in Fashion? I am a born artist. From drawings, paintings, clay play sculptures to fashion design, my journey is always art oriented. Fashion was my interest from a long time so I chose to be a designer without any doubt and now I am proud of it because we have given an entire new industry to our country and new generation. What skills are important for a successful career in fashion design? In any field dedication is the key to success but in fashion industry you need to have a lot more. One should be quite confident, powerful and social along with creativity. Handling criticism is also part of the job.

Where do you derive your inspiration from? For an artist everything that grabs its attention is inspiration, for me it comes from paintings, different cultures, music and my travelling. I am a person who believes in design philosophy and always end up making collections with a statement. What in your opinion has been the best design trend in the past 5 years? There is nothing known as the best or bad design trends as fashion is all about change. However I prefer long jackets and flowy silhouettes as they work well with the ladies of our sub-continent.

What advice would you give to a young designer? Be confident, pure, and original! People will drag you down so step on them and rise high! Spread fashion. What is the most challenging about a career in fashion? We live in the most challenging industry because every season you need to come up with even better and creative designs. What helps you get in the zone when you are designing? I believe music is the basic element for me to create magic. How would you describe the current state of fashion industry? Fashion industry is booming and I am happy to see emerging designer every year. It makes our country strong. Which era of fashion do you admire the most? It’s hard to say but I love the sophistication of 70's and colors splashes of 80's. You are ranked one of the best designers in Pakistan. How do you feel about it? It’s a great feeling for sure and it’s all because of nonstop effort, right attitude and the strong dedication towards your passion and the credit for it goes to my entire team and the love of our clients. You have done so many international shows. How do u feel about representing Pakistan abroad? I have done countless fashion shows all across the globe and represented Pakistan in a very beautiful and powerful way. The world has a very negative idea about our
country but i felt really honored to show the opposite side of that in a very glamorous way. How are Mehdi bridals different from the rest? House of MEHDI is known for its unique colour blends cuts and the signature embellishments. A Mehdi signature outfit is draped in luxurious fabric with a strong focus on design with the detailed embellishments and finished in the finest way to create a timeless classic piece. You have designed bridal outfits for many celebrities. Any favourite so far? Each and every client is very special to me and I make sure that every Mehdi bride looks like a star on her big day. But to answer your question recently i did the bridal outfit for Iman Ali and its one of my favourite. It’s a very traditional outfit with old school charm. What are your next ventures? I recently opened a new Mehdi couture studio in Lahore. I am a person who believes in work not in words. Let the time come to unveil the new projects.

When you were little what did you want to be when you grew up? And do you still want it? I just wanted to be famous and successful and yes, I think that is still relevant.
If you got stuck in the elevator and were forced to listen to only one song, which would it be? Damn this is a tough one! I think We Will Rock You by Queen, or Breathing by Lifehouse would be ideal.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you? “Your life is the cup you’ve been given and what you fill it with is exactly what you will be drinking”... and they wrote it on an actual cup for me, which I thought was very profound and meaningful.
