camille & es ra travel Camille Delbos & Esra Tat Organic Globe Trotters visit Pakistan

amille and Esra, a Muslim couple from France, lived in a beautiful European apartment with all the comforts and amenities two young professionals hope to enjoy. Camille worked as a project manager in an Eco-construction firm while Esra worked in advocacy. Two years ago they sold off all their belongings, handed over their apartment keys to the landlord and took off on their nomadic adventure. They’ve travelled across 17 countries mostly by land and sea, avoiding air travel to genuinely embrace the globe trotting experience. They’re here in Pakistan now and we couldn’t miss a chance to hear everything about their unique journey spanning two years. What made you two decide to take up this journey? We realised our possessions were plenty, we had everything we need but it didn’t make us happy. There was no fulfillment. Consumerism reigns strong in the western society. I (Esra) used to also write for Tat Minimal Journal and we both have always been inclined towards exploring a more organic & minimalist lifestyle. We aim to challenge the way we live and hope to live better with less.

Pakistan isn’t a usual choice for western travellers due to the mainstream media hype. Was it always in your itinerary or did it evolve into the plan later? We know travellers usually don’t pick Pakistan. When we left France a year ago, we really didn’t follow a plan. We wanted to keep moving 14

East and we wanted to do it as organically as possible.On our way we met a Japanese guy in Central Asia who showed us pictures of Pakistan’s north and we were stunned by the visuals. Media in our country makes us see Pakistan as unstable and terrifying but when something is meant to happen, the universe begins to guide you in that specific direction. We began bumping into more and more Pakistanis along our journey; at halal take-aways and random junctions. Our perception became clearer and our apprehensions fizzled away. What route did you take to get to Pakistan? We wanted to visit India and Pakistan in that order but the border agencies didn’t love the idea of that. We had to fly to Lahore from Bangkok and that’s the first flight we took in almost 13 months! What are all the countries you’ve seen so far? We’ve visited 17 countries in this order: France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgysztan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Japan, China, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and now Pakistan. How do you budget such a long trip? It’s all about saving on costs. We hitchhike where we can, travel cheap, eat food on corner stalls instead of the more expensive diners. We’ve saved a lot on accommodation due to CouchSurfing.Com. To kick-start the journey we’d casu-

ally saved up for about seven years. We started with a $30/day per person budget in mind nbut I guess we’ve gotten good at it. We’ve successfully brought it down to $ 15/day per person.

What are the differences you’ve seen in the Pakistani community on your trip so far? The major difference in the Pakistani and western community is the norms and culture here. It gave us major food for thought. People are just so nice here.In France if a tourist or anyone on the street asks for help, you turn the other way and avoid it as much as possible. People here go out of the way. When we reached out to someone over CouchSurfing. Com for a cup of coffee and chat, he left us in shock for a moment. The guy asked to take us out for dinner. A random stranger who we’d never met was willing to treat us to a meal and chat. People are absolutely hospitable and accommodating in this country. From the guy at the tea stall to the people we’ve stayed with.

In France people saw me differently as a hijabi, French women. Travelling made me realise we all fit perfectly on this planet.. There’s so many different people, living in so many different ways. We all belong here.

Have you seen travel change anything about your personalities and outlook on life? What’s your trip been like so far? Camille: I can easily talk to people now. My comfort zone is way more expanded than We’re overwhelmed by the people here. We arrived in when I began. I’ve improved my English. Also travel destroyed some huge cliches for me. It may be a few weeks or a few months. We’ll see what the flow evolves into. Camille loves photography and we want to take this opportunity to cover Pakistan how we’ve experienced it and share it with our community back in Europe. Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Well I was planned to go to Norway only to host the fundraising cricket match with Pakistani cricketers for disabled children and once it was done my friends invited me to visit Paris though I was enjoying my stay in Norway and my friends in Norway was taking me every where possible and I was loving the chilli weather of Norway too since Paris was warmer and we live in a warm country so I do enjoy cold places mostly.

Where did you stay? In Norway I stayed at the hotel Radison blu and in Paris I stayed at The Fouquet's hotel at the 46 avenue George V, both the hotels were really nice and comfortable but I enjoyed The Fouquet's hotel in Paris the most as it was a Boutiqe hotel and specially it was well located as you know champs eleesy is the most famous place with right amount of cafes and all high-end fashion brands.

Who did you travel with? To Norway I travelled with actor Ahsan khan and a few cricketers including the captan Misbah and Paris I went all by my self to visit my friends, if you have good company during your traveling with you then it's double the fun. Specially those friends who love to do our door activities e.g cycling brisk walk around the down town.

What are the best shopping spots there? in Norway central city centre is really good for shopping and in August it's amazing sales all over Europe anyway and in Paris champs Eleeesy is the best for shopping, who say no to shopping specially when it is sales time, up to 75% off, so the best attraction for tourists are sales where ever they go in the globe.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? in Norway I have so many friends and family they kept inviting me over for dinners and lunches to their houses but I still managed to explore few amazing cafes like Express cafe, The Rio , TGIF is a must where ever I go, in Paris I found an amazing Indian restaurant in the hub call RATAN and PF Change's is my all time favourite and loved the George V cafe on the champs Eleeesy.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? take cruise within Europe is the best thing u can do to unwind, amazing cafes by the sea side are to die for u can sit there with your coffee for hours and brilliant parks and lakes .
