Who is your role model? My dad
Your go-to comfort food: Anda shaami burger from International Burger at Data Kabana.
At what moment in your life did you decide film production was your true calling? After watching Zibahkhana literally. I went for its premiere at Islamabad Club. I obviously had an interest since a very young age. After seeing the movie I thought to myself if Omar can make a film I can make one too. Luckily at that time my social circle had people like Osman Khalid Butt & Hareem Farooq who were from the theater. I had the writers and actors in hand so I started working on my first project in 2009 which was Sayaah. We had minimal funds to create a movie at that point so I began thinking what genre I could work on with that kind of a budget and so I decided on horror. I started conceptualising a horror theme and then I asked Osman to start writing the script. It took us 6 months and 5 drafts to finalise the script. Did you face any struggles or hurdles during your journey as a producer? Getting Janaan to happen has been my biggest struggle. Starting off with a film like Sayaah which was a small budget film and moving right onto producing a big budget film like Janaan has been a major trek. I’ve had a target of releasing it globally and it’s the first Pakistani film to release in more than 15 countries. And I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights and a number of stressed out meetings around the clock that I’ve only been able to handle due to my patience and my smile. What are your hopes for Janaan once it hits the cinemas? Extremely high. I’m very confident the audiences will love it. It’s a complete package. It has romance, comedy, fun, drama, revenge, action and twists. It’s a complete masala film with a very good message in the end. We are touching up on a very important social issue in the film. I’ve always tried to incorporate that. It’s incorporated very subtly so that it doesn’t take away from the entertainment factor. The best thing about it is it is a Pakistani film. It is a Pakistani story depicting Pakistani culture, traditions and we’re working with Pakistani actors. We were lucky to make a film on Pukhtoons. Pukhtoon culture is extremely vast. We’ve only

managed to touch upon 1% of what Pukhtoon traditions are and we wanted to show Pathans and all Pakistanis are as abnormally, normal as everyone else. Were there any interesting revelations to you about the Pakhtoon culture while you were creating the film, that changed or added to your perception of the people? Did it break any stereotypes? Yes plenty of stuff. The thing is my mom is a Pathan so I know plenty about the Pukhtoon culture but the crew with me were not all Pathans so they were all pretty surprised to learn about the Pakhtoon Waali Code. There’s a code among the Pathans that goes by this name. It has a list of 11 principals about hospitality, justice, fairness and justice. It’s a proper code with a set of rules to follow. Did you face any troubles with the conception and making of Janaan? Did you have prior experiences that helped you in this project? I don’t have a family background in this field. I had minimal contacts so I had to go bottom up in the field. At the time of Sayaah, distribution companies were not very encouraging regarding Pakistani films. Mohsin Yasin of Footprint helped a lot in promoting and encouraging new Pakistani films in cinemas. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Either I’ll be dead because of a heart attack caused by all the tensions and stress or I’ll be among the top producers in this country who’ll be making more than one film at the same time. I want to be abIe to enable young talent, create more content. I know how hard it when you wish to do something and you don’t have the resources of doing it. I want to give a platform to youngsters like me so they don’t stress over the fact that they have a degree, they want to work in films, they have the talent but don’t know where to go to pursue that. What does a Sunday look like for you? What Sunday? The movie release is around the corner and I don’t really remember a good old, regular Sunday for the past 12 months. It’s stress-filled and a constant struggle in coordination. How was your experience working with the Janaan Cast and Crew? Armeena is a gem of a person. She’ll never have any starry tantrums. Bilal Ashraf is a very hard-working guy. He’s always ready to work. Even if there’s a thirty hour work spell, you’ll never see any laziness on his face. Ali Rehman would keep the whole set fun and awake. He’d keep everyone positive and awake. He’s very charming like that. Hania Aamir is a new-comer and was slightly tense in the beginning but she’s so talented that I think she’ll be the biggest star of Pakistan in the future. Osman Khalid Butt was the writer but he worked with assistant director, wardrobe in charge and a script supervisor. He gave his 110% to the film and was completely involved in the project in all aspects. I’ve been super-lucky to have such a great team. The only mishap that happened was when the spot boy caught fire on the sets. He was the most involved and handy guy on sets and when he caught fire my heart sank. Luckily he didn’t face any major burns. We had the necessary precautions to control the situation and luckily he was unscathed. So the overall experience with the team has been great. Any advice for young individuals aspiring to become part of this young but growing industry? For university students who’d like to direct, I’d like to say that they should keep on making as many short films as possible. Make it a one-man show where you’re the producer, director, writer, actor, spot-boy the reason being it’ll help you understand the limitations of each role so when you go on to be a director you’ll be able understand the complete process better. And for those who want to get into producing, just remember that patience is your biggest virtue. For people who’ve graduated keep on sending your resumes to the IRK Films’ Facebook page. We want great young talent to work with us especially writers, storyboard artists, art directors and assistant directors so on upcoming projects we can use them as our main guys. 2016

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I was traveling to Manila, Philippines for a business trip. Upon researching about Philippines and touristic things to do there I came across a few popular beaches that were close by and that was exactly what I was looking for. My love for white sand beaches always makes me look for one thing whenever I go to a new place; that is if I can find an island or a good white sand beach nearby that I can visit. That’s when I came across a small island south of Manila known as Boracay. Boracay is a popular tourist destination being a tropical island surrounded by stunning white sand beaches and clear blue waters. I thought I had hit a jackpot and I got to visit this place! Who did you travel with? I traveled with a close friend of mine who was joining me in

Manila from Singapore and then we both made our way to Boracay together. Where did you stay? We stayed at the Fairways Bluewater Resort in Boracay. It was a beautiful resort with multiple pools, a golf course and a private beach. What are the best shopping spots there? Boracay being a small island has a lot of flea markets and stalls lined up next to its beaches. Here you will come across very nice and colorful beachwear with a twist and lots of handicrafts and accessories to buy. The closest thing to a proper mall there is D’Mall, located next to White Beach, this is where you will find some shops for clothes, souvenirs and even small eateries.

The best thing is to rent a sun-lounger and spend the whole day at the beach and just breathe in the serenity of the island. Finally, any tips? Suggest places for a perfect night out The serenity during the day of the White Beach transforms into a pumping nightlife. There are many clubs and bars along the beach and also many cafes start live music and karaoke as soon as the sun sets. Boracay’s nightlife is said to be throughout the week and not only restricted to the weekends. My favorite way to spend the night was listening to some live jazz music along the beach with yummy food and shisha!

Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Boracay is a small approximately 7km long island surrounded by multiple beaches along its coastline. However, two beaches that are an absolute must are the White Beach and Puka Shell Beach. White Beach is the biggest and most popular beach of the island. It is a very calm beach with pure white sand and shallow waters and ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Here you will find a wide variety of things to do from all sorts of water sports, eateries and shopping stalls or one may just lie down on a beach chair and relax. On the other hand the Puka Shell Beach strikes a contrast as it has strong blue waves and the sand is golden
brown. I was enthralled by the abundance of shells on the beach in all different shapes and sizes making it difficult to walk at times. However, I had a great time watching the sunset on this beach while sipping some fresh coconut water.

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Lemoni Café was a cozy eatery tucked away in the D’Mall. The café took its inspiration from the citrusy lemon fruit with its vibrant restaurant interiors and zesty food flavors. The cuisine here specializes in fresh, healthy gourmet dishes and delectable desserts especially their lemon tart is a must try. Other than this there are many local eateries and food stalls along the White Beach offering delectable seafood. I remember having of one the best lobsters at one of the beach side restaurant, having picked it myself from the wide variety of sea creatures there that were being offered there.
