In conversation with Safinah Elahi Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? I am a teacher and a mother of two, aged ten and six. My daughter is ten years old, and my son is 6 years old. I am a writer and a poet. I am a partner in a fitness company, and also doing a law degree as a self-study program. Describe your writing style.

My poetry style is very simplistic and my novel style would be narrative in a third person voice. You recently published your latest set of poems in a book titled ‘The Unbridled Romance of Love and Pain’. What inspired you to write it? My inspiration comes from experiences in my life as well as tap-

ping into others feelings. Whatever is written isn’t only related to me only but is about others too. I am a sensitive person so I try understanding what others are feeling in the given moment. What did you learn while writing? Anything that surprised you about yourself and your skills?
While writing I would say I learned to be patient and to not have instant rectification. Sometimes you need results urgently but writing is a longer process than a business. You write, you compile, you get it edited and a lot more. It takes time, it is detailed, and it has surprised me as it is emotional and I’m not an emotional person. Had you always been interested in writing? What fueled your desire to write this book? I have always been interested in books, but as a reader. If I have a book with me, I don’t need anything else. The desire that fuelled me to write was the fact that I was ready to share my feelings. Some things that are really personal things and I wouldn’t want anyone to know as even if the feelings weren’t mine the expressions were, but this year I let go all of this. Where do you get your ideas? I get my ideas from my life experiences. From any moment in time, if somebody speaks something or even any interesting word. What is your writing process like? How long did it take you to compile your latest book from start to finish? Surprising that it didn’t take too long as it has 8 year old pieces of writing compiled in it. So all the poems the book has have not been written in four months, but the book itself is compiled in four months. Do you believe in writer’s block? I am very happy to share that I have not had any block until now. Poetry is something someone said I write a lot sometimes and sometimes very less. But when it comes to writing a novel; once the story gets stuck and you’re trying to line up a character, I get writer’s block. Aside from writing, do you have any other interests or passions? I do a lot of yoga, and I work out as it’s my passion. My career is I teach and I’m a
parent counselor as I love kids and love my work. I also write, and I even write blogs for a travel agency. I started writing my novel and poetry side by side and this year I thought I should just put it out there for people to read. Is there any advice that you can give to aspiring writers? For aspiring young writers, please don’t get disheartened if you don’t immediately find any publication. Wait for the right time and don’t stop writing. You can also look for online forums such as Instagram pages or blogs. In order to publish your work, approach publishers; local or international both, because when it comes to poetry, locally we have very less options. 2020

Online education system enables to learn and teach anywhere and everywhere Generally, it is suitable for students with limited financial resources or time. . The distance learning my help to effectively use one’s time. The student may be able to make themselves comfortable in the environment of their choice, stay totally focused without any distractions and may access the notes repeatedly from the archives.
The Bad:
The online education including both the teaching and the learning is being studied and researched for over decades. There are several studies and literature which focuses on the online education system thoroughly. Effective designs and careful considerations from every aspects are taken into account to design the systematic model for online teaching. To provide the quality online education proper instruction with planning and training is provided to the faculty members. However, in the present emergency situation the distant teaching is being practiced without proper training, trails and planning. The teachers may find it hard to work without glitches which they have never experienced before due to the lack of training. The trail testing and planning for the use of online software is done in a rush without proper research. Since these are not the ideal circumstances for improvisation and testing, most of the institutions have chosen to use the most famous and familiar software available without proper planning. Although every campus may have arrange the support staff to assist the faculty members but they might not be able to provide the same support to all the faculty members in such narrow preparation window. Online teaching, distant learning, mobile learning and distributive learning etc. may appears as synonyms yet they need to be differentiated from “emergency remote teaching�- the circumstances experienced at present. Without any significant contribution from their side, teachers who are used to conventional teaching in classrooms are uploading the already available YouTube lectures and online links which were accessible before as well. The students that are accustomed and habitual to the conventional method are forced to use to online system may find it hard to adjust in online class. This emergency remote teaching may affect the timid students that are often probed by the teachers and encouraged to ask about any difficulty they are facing. Some of the software used for teaching just enables the teacher to identify
the individual who has signed in for the class but by no means it can ensure the actual presence of student and his/her attention. The possibility of logging in the online class without paying actual attention cannot be affirmatively ruled out. This emergency remote teaching is also affecting the parents of school going kids. Parents who are not computer savvy are facing difficulties while submitting assignments and daily tasks of their children. This may be a challenging situation for the parents as they are not trained and demonstrated with online education. Some of the younger students may need the constant presence of their working parents which may affect their academic productivity. Since hundreds of faculty members and thousands of students are now using the academic cyber space without any other
option to avail, might result in the decrease of the taboo associated with online pedagogy of being lower quality than face-to-face learning. There is quiet a chance that teachers resistant to use technology to facilitate their teaching practice will be more likely to inculcate modernize teaching methodologies. This emergency remote teaching may have hurried moves but if the feedback from students and teachers is obtained weekly by each institution, can help them in not only improving the technology but also to meet the learning needs of their students. Even though this emergency online pedagogy is unprecedented but it may result in stepping up a new era of teaching and learning in a digital world.
The Unknown:
After declaration of COVID-19 as public health
emergency by World Health Organization (WHO), almost every educational institution including schools colleges and universities had to call off the regular classes to contain its spread. In order to compensate the loss of studies and to adjust the remuneration of students, the faculty is mandated to move their classes into a virtual setting. So due to the recent pandemic, the physical educational institutions are shifted to online education within days. One cannot disagree that moving instructions online is the need of hour however the speed with which the paradigm has shifted towards electronic classes remains debatable. The educational institutions and educators must do thorough research and look at every aspect of the current teaching scenario in Pakistan. Thorough and well-designed study into this “emergency education system� is the only way forward.

Blame in the time of
CORONA

ew things I’ve observed about fellow countrymen recently; we do not want to take responsibility, for our lives, our choices, our circumstances, our country. We want the government to take responsibility of everything happening; for the quality of our life in every way without contributing as much to it ourselves. We want clean roads, yet we throw trash on the road, we want people to stand in lines, yet we would make any amount of calls to avoid those lines, we want strict lockdown imposed by the government to combat corona, yet we will go out if the shops are open. Shopping isn’t being imposed on us. If you can live without it, don’t go

out, if you’re a lockdown activist that is. If not, live and let live. If you understand that distancing is important please distance yourself. You’re old enough to do it without the government forcing it on you. It is your life, your choices. People gather around in their friends’ and family’s houses, order food from outside, huddle together and talk about the ineffectiveness of a half ass lockdown and how it’s all spreading astaghfirullah and people (read govt) are not taking it seriously not realizing that we are those people. We have a way of absolving ourselves from all responsibility when it comes to our own preferences. Meeting in homes is ok when I know my friends don’t have it either. Cycling in groups of 25 is ok because I want to. Now that shops are open I’ll go shop for 3 days’ outfits for myself and the family even though we’re supposed to be distancing eid or no eid because that’s the standard we expect
from the govt but not ourselves. Now that I’ve brought pretty clothes and gotten all dressed up might as well go meet people on eid too. Because obviously I know those people don’t have corona so I’m not causing any harm but this stupid govt isn’t doing enough and forcing people to sit at home I tell you. The government is obviously the prime punching bag in this scenario, but it doesn’t stop there. No no. We judge everybody and anybody who isn’t following the isolation guidelines as proposed by our superior epidemiologist selves. We all think our version of going out is kosher. While other people’s preferences are the most unbelievably inconceivable ideas since Eve bit the forbidden fruit. If you’re fully self isolating and not coming into contact with anyone at all, then I have good news for you my friends, you have earned yourself the right to judge whoever, however you want. You get a free pass. But whoever has their own notions of how only their own kind of interaction has been legitimized by the WHO, please sit down. No one died and made you a Corona god.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? I have always had a knack for creativity and used to find ways to express it through different means. It was sooner than later when I realized that fashion designing is something I enjoy the most as it allows me to express my creative instincts in the best way possible. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? Honestly, now that I have been a part of the field for a while, I can’t imagine doing anything else. I have come to realize that this is the field for me. Did you ever feel discouraged mid-way your routine? How did you push through it? If I’m being honest I’ve had second thoughts numerous times and there are various reasons for it but i guess everyone goes through challenges especially in the beginning and coping up with those challenges and not giving up is the kind of mentality one needs to adapt. I have a strong belief system; this makes me feel content with everything that comes my way in life.
