What does beauty mean to you? Beauty means feeling comfortable in your own skin and feeling good about yourself, whether it is because of make-up or nice clothes or exercising, it is having confidence in yourself. Have you been inclined towards make-up since a young age or did you recognise your passion later on in life? Almost every woman loves make up but I never thought of becoming a make-up artist, I recognised my passion in my early 20’s. How do you stay abreast of the latest beauty trends? Keeping up with all the trends can feel overwhelming at times; you need to know what’s happening not only for you, but also for your potential customers. They trust you to be informed and to know what is happening in the Beauty and Fashion world. So I do a lot of research online regarding the current and upcoming beauty trends and read a lot of print magazines daily so I stay ahead of the trends. You have an incredible career – what have been your highlights? Highlights of my career are that I started from scratch and I keep on educating to update myself on latest techniques in this field, I was able to expand and make a salon of my dream. I am always consistently working on giving good service to my clients. What has been the biggest challenge of your career? Each day comes with its own challenges and problems but patience and dedication towards my work is what always gets me through. During my career I have always tried to strike a balance between what the client wants and what vision I have for them which has always worked for me. How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other make-up artists? My make-up style is soft, subtle and dewy. I don’t believe in over doing it. The best part about Amina Z salon is that we don’t impose rather we improvise make-up and hair according to your skin type or preferences but there is one thing for sure. Your secret to successfully running multiple branches of your salon while raising your kids? It's never easy being a mom trying to juggle a full-time business with a family life. The key is to focus on a plan, get organized, and find the right balance between profession and parenthood. I am blessed with a very supportive family which makes running my salons a lot easier. Describe a day in your life. My day starts at 9/30 with a good breakfast, reach the salon between 10/30 to 11. Check everything at the salon, have a brief meeting with my team. Then generally talk to my clients, check

if the services are done properly, pick up my son from school at 2/40 take him home, after lunch I come back to the salon in the evening and then I am there till it closes at 8pm How does it feel to have your daughter choose the same career as you? I am very happy and relieved that my daughter has recently joined me. She has done her bachelor’s degree in math, statistics and computer sciences from university of Toronto. Then she did a year’s course from Aveda institute Toronto in hair and salon management, Aveda is considered to be one of the best there. Your advice to aspiring young girls who want to be just like you. We all know practice makes perfect, and make-up artistry is no exception. Whether it's trying out different looks on yourself or your friends, the more you do it, the better you will be. Also being determined and focused is imperative to succeeding. Never lose hope and learn to take criticism positively and in a few short years things will work out even better than expected.

Everything happens for a reason, let go and live.

Tell us about sites no one should miss out on? Malaysia has a lot to offer, one of the places that i absolutely fell in love with was the worlds largest hotel, First World Hotel which consists of 7000 rooms in Genting highlands. Genting highlands it self is a gorgeous place with a huge indoor themed park and a world famous casino. Apart from that Malaysia has some gorgeous beaches like langkawi, Penang and Sepang. Kuala lampur has attractions like Petronas twin towers and Menara Tower.

Suggest places for a perfect night out? If you want a perfect night out, you should visit Atmosphere 360 which is the revolving resturaunt at Menara KL. It is a great place to unwind with a gorgeous sky high views. What can you do over there to relax and unwind? To relax an unwind we went to this gorgeous resort in Sepang, Avani GoldCoast Resort. It had over water villas and private beach also a spa rejuvenation centre.

Tips? When planning your trip you should break into at least 3 places, Kuala Lampur, Langkawi and Genting Highlands amd from KL you can take day trips to different places.

Can you tell us a little about yourself? That’s not an easy question to answer! I’m almost 30 years old, but I look 16. I love dogs, films, rock music, yoga and annoying my husband! I studied Film in university but ended up making skin care products, and don’t regret it for a second. My favorite color is orange, my favorite movie is probably Fight Club and I’m one of those Game of Thrones geeks. What does beauty mean to you? Feeling good in one’s own skin and a healthy skin care regime. How did you first become interested in natural beauty products and what finally led you to take the leap to setting up your own all-natural beauty brand, Aura? Aura is my parents’ baby. They started Aura as a hobby in their home

company? Any challenges or hurdles you have come across since its inception? Running any company is a tough endless job and makes you a great multi-tasker. There are lots and lots of challenges that I talk about in response to another question. What is the development process of Aura’s products? Where do you find inspiration for each different product? Each new recipe is carefully developed by myself, Aura’s Hakeem Sahab and cosmetic chemist. Every new batch undergoes a lab test. Once passed, the product samples are distributed amongst family and friends to try out. This can take upto 4-6 months. My dad made quite a few contacts with skin care gurus all over the world before he passed away, so I keep in touch with them myself and simply keep up with skin care trends - especially in Korea. However, the main source of inspiration is Pakistan’s own natural resources and old wisdom. Could you tell us a bit about pricing; what factors go into deciding how much a final product will sell for? Since a majority of the packaging and raw material is imported for skin care products in Pakistan (our industry still needs time to grow), a good chunk of the pricing depends on the landed costs of materials. It’s a nice old blend of tax, marketing, profit and cost of goods. What are your go-to beauty products, any guilty pleasures? Everything Aura. I’m a sucker for essential oils, face oils, face mists, mascara and lip tints. As for other skin care/cosmetic brands, I’m all about NYX Cosmetics Aesop Skin Care! What are your top three favorite picks from Aura’s wide range of products? Organic Rose Water, Activated Charcoal Bar, Lift Me Up Mask.

Can you tell us a little about the Pakistani market? Is it easy to cater to? Yes and no. I think the awareness and curiosity for natural skin care is increasing every day. The only hurdles are maintaining affordable prices with high quality natural products and getting customers to trust a local brand. Also, not selling fairness products confuses customers. #SayNoToFairnessProducts #BeautyBeyondColor Who is the Aura customer? Typically, women between the ages of 18 and 35. It’s a good mix of students, mothers, working women and housewives. What are your goals for the brand for the next year, five years and overall? To become the number one name for natural skin care in Pakistan and eventually open our doors to international markets! Lastly, what are some hurdles an aspiring business owner might not be aware of? And more importantly, being a female entrepreneur yourself, do you feel there are more challenges faced by female-led businesses in our society? There are new hurdles every day. The one I have to deal with the most is the lack of professionalism specifically in Punjab. When running a business, one is not only working 24/7 but also reliant on several people to stay on track. It can get stressful really fast. As for challenges as a female entrepreneur in Pakistan - while there are more females working now than ever before in Pakistan, it’s still not something people are entirely comfortable with. I face a lot of non-communicative and dismissive behavior from male professionals, especially in the retail sector. Perhaps they feel awkward talking to a female or it’s an ego issue - or both! Plus it doesn’t help that I look 10 years old. Haha!

Cyminology is a Berlin based jazz quartet that combines Persian poetry and chamber-esque contemporary music. The subtle yet dynamic music takes its cue from the sound of the Persian language, sung by the lead singer Cymin Samawatie. Their latest album release is “Phoenix” and they are invited for three concerts in Pakistan, one that will be taking place in November at the GoetheInstitut.
