What is the story behind Noreen Neelam? Since desigining was always a passion for both of us, it all began when we started designing clothes for close friends and family which were really appreciated. After a sublime response, we did our first exhibit abroad and from there gradually built our brand. Describe Noreen Neelam in three words? Professional, innovative and creative. Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? How did your interest in fashion designing begin? Playing dress up has been our most favourite thing to do throughout our childhood so calling it an interest would be an understatement. After designing clothes for weddings and parties we decided to pursue it as a career. What makes Noreen Neelam’s bridal collection different from other luxury wear brands? We tend to follow our own instinct when it comes to trends and designing. Every piece in our collection is handmade; we have used antique and expensive knots, using a lot of details, customization and a touch of Noreen Neelam magic. Where do you derive your inspiration from? We travel a lot hence we get inspired by the little things, fascinating places and different fashion hubs. Describe a day at Noreen Neelam’s studio. Lately, it’s been super busy working for PLBW, since it’s our debut we want to give our best therefore here, at Noreen Neelam’s studio, it’s innovation at its peak. Which one is your favourite creation from the latest luxury formal collection? Every single piece is very dear to us hence this one is very difficult to answer. What are the pros and cons of being a fashion designer? Pros: We get to be fun and creative every day and wear a new design whenever we want. Con: A lot of stress and time goes in to coming up with themes and design for every outfit as every outfit speaks for itself. Any advice for an aspiring fashion designer? Or someone in the same field as you? It is an exciting field to pursue - Be yourself, create

your own designs and be an asset to Pakistan’s Fashion industry. To what do you attribute your success? Hard work. Where do you wish to see Noreen Neelam in the next 5 years? Looking forward to expanding and strengthening our bridal identity and to be known worldwide.

What is STOIS? How did you come up with the name? STOIS is Pakistan’s first children and family firm, meaning we design and create spaces specifically for children and families. This could be anything ranging from a playground, a paediatric ward in a hospital, a playroom in a private residence, and children’s play area in a restaurant, or a school. What motivates someone to start a brand like STOIS? After having my son I realised I had a personal need to provide him with good quality toys and an immersive interactive environment that could facilitate his childhood experience on a daily basis. In Pakistan primarily, we have been limited to only accessing malls where children’s play spaces are available, or if you are lucky enough to have various club memberships then you have access to those on the weekends too. But for me personally that wasn’t enough;

ABOUT ME!

Soon after I created my first product and play space for my son, I realised other parents and people shared the same frustrations. What are the challenges you have faced as an entrepreneur in Pakistan? I have faced so many and I’m truly grateful for each and every challenge that’s come my way! Here are a few from conception till date that I struggle with. During the initial days, I struggled with procurement of good quality raw materials and finding skilled labour without the knowledge of child safety and good quality aesthetic. The financial viability did not look good during the initial days. Running a business ultimately needs to make sense on paper, and for a long time STOIS didn’t, I ultimately had to remove items completely, some very close to my heart simply because it no longer made practical business sense and I was spreading myself too thin. You have a really cool portfolio (private clients and corporate)? What project would you say is your absolute favourite? That’s impossible for me to say! Each project I’ve been lucky enough to do I have approached as if it was my first project., I’ve never repeated a concept and so no two works are the same. When you always do something new it’s really hard to choose a favourite. But if I had to really say, I don’t think I’ve done a “favourite” yet, there’s a lot of really cool things I intend to do! How involved are parents in the process for every project?

So if it is a residential project I’d say parents are crucial, they’re the ones who hire us so they’re the ones who take the first steps and we all know how important first steps are. Secondly, they’re the ones who give us guidance and direction through our preliminary interior questionnaire from which we are able to then determine the best way to maximise their dreams and what they envision. Putting together a team for a brand like yours must have been very difficult. How did you manage? It’s been hard. There’s been a lot of trial and error. I’ve had to let go of personal preferences, I’ve had to let go of people who played to my empathetic nature but were no longer delivering on what was required. Hiring and team building in general is what I consider to be a work in progress, and probably always will be because you should never fully depend on any one person for a task, if you doyou’re asking for problems! What is your take on the Pakistani market and how it treats its entrepreneurs and small businesses? I think it’s an exciting time to be alive, and a very exciting time to be an entrepreneur. Being in a third world country as an entrepreneur brings with it a level of newness and unmatched opportunity. Sure, there’s a myriad of hurdles and difficulties and I’d even go as far as to say “suffering” moments that small business owners or entrepreneurs go through but if you look at it from a macro scale, the fact I’m even speaking so openly and candidly about this means I’m in a highly privileged position.

Who do you see as your competitors? Everyone, there’s no lack of talent or creativity around and so it would be foolish and naive to think or say there’s no competition. All it takes is someone willing to put in the work. You are a one-of-a-kind service-based company? Was it difficult to find your niche in Pakistan? It wasn’t difficult to find the niche, because the truth is there was very little available in my field when I started but I would say the difficulty lies in maintaining the niche above all else. You are based out of Karachi; how do you manage projects in Lahore and Islamabad? Our consultants travel if need be. Design work can happen from Karachi easily for projects anywhere in the world technically. When it comes to executing projects outside of Karachi, again I have been lucky enough to connect myself and set up certain systems where skilled labour and execution is doable in such places too. What do you foresee for the future of STOIS? Where will STOIS be in 5 years? Everything’s changing constantly, there are too many variables now; politically, economically and socially that it doesn’t really make sense to put your hopes in plans that are too far in the future.

We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I had been traveling to the northern areas for quite a few years but this time I decided to arrange an all-girls therapeutic trip to Hunza. The idea behind having such a trip is to merge travel and therapy by gathering those solo travelers who are tired of their hectic work/study routine, are afraid to travel without a friendâ€™s company, are introverts, going through some rough time, dealing with social anxiety (situations similar to what I would refrain from mentioning). The purpose is to travel, stay together and converse without being judged and spend some time away from all the toxicity with a few like-minded people. For such a therapeutic getaway, there is no better place than Hunza.

Tell us the most exciting thing you did during your trip? Everything about the trip was pretty exciting but Iâ€™ll have to pick the super bumpy jeep ride up to Kundol Lake. Throughout the journey there, I wasnâ€™t sure if the jeep would be able to make it up!

Any tips? If anyone is considering going to Kalam, one should go when the Behrain-Kalam road is made. The 32 km can be a 2-5 hour drive, because it is currently under construction. All our exciting adventures are up on our blog @travellingbasic so make sure to check those out for more tips!
