Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? As a kid, I developed a habit of putting out my mind on paper through sketching and drawing. I’d say I discovered my inclination towards creative and aesthetic work quite early so I pursued my interest and went to National College of Arts (NCA) for my bachelor’s degree in Textile Designing. What was your “aha!” moment? The biggest ‘aha’ moment was the opening of our flagship store on MM Alam, Lahore. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? No, not really. I’ve never thought about switching my career, I absolutely enjoy what I do. However, right after I graduated, I once auditioned to become a TV anchor. "MY When was time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it? Feeling discouraged is one of the hardest things to get through. I feel discouraged when there are any sort of hindrances in work and I can’t see any new innovations. But nonetheless, I am very lucky to have a very optimistic life partner who never failed to encourage me no matter how grave the problem looked.

What does nobody tell you about being the boss? Being the Boss demands expertise in four Ps. Not a day goes by without being passionate, having patience, setting priorities and managing pain. Name of boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? There are a lot of inspirational women out there but if I have to take one name that’d be Mussarat Misbah. A woman with multiple talents. Hats off to her contribution in society through her skills and business. Describe a day in your life My day starts with a workout. The rest of the day is spent balancing between kids and work, a must have flexibility every working women possesses!

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you? My mother gave me some valuable advices, “Be kind without expecting anything in return”, “do good and keep it between yourself and Allah” and “always keep your intentions pure”. What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life? My wonderful kids and husband, supportive friends & family, and definitely work. What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list? To win “best fashion brand” award for Limelight!

Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…” Boss lady is a woman comfortable in her own skin. She’s a combination of courage and empathy.

What did you learn from your biggest failure? Failure is an experience which compels one to do much better. You can achieve anything if you work hard but work hard in the right direction! Also, one must always try to make well thought out decisions. Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with? I would choose to have dinner with Imran Khan, we are blessed to have such an amazing leader for our country. Another leader would be, Justin Trudeau. What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours? It’s important to know yourself. Recognize your strengths and identify your areas of growth. Select your profession according to your skills and strengths. If you do this you will be successful but not without hard work!

The World of HSY is synonymous with luxury and excellent craftsmanship, and you as a designer have achieved many a feat in the Pakistani fashion industry. How did you attain this position, and how have you continuously set yourself apart from other, newer designers? I believe when youâ€™re passionate about something, hard work become a habit. I think the main reason for our success as a brand was that we always thought and did everything out of the box. For all our campaigns, ideas we never looked at any of our counterparts, we had a vision on how to position ourselves and thank God we

stuck to it.

When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a fashion designer? In 1994 I started my career as a fashion choreographer, during the 14 years that followed I did a lot of local shows; I traveled a lot and did a lot of international shows. During that time I decided not to throw away my career and become someone conventional. When I was 5 years old I developed an urge to design my own cloth. In 1996, I joined the Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD) and graduated in 2000, I learnt how clothes are put together,

Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, also known as HSY, started his career as a fashion choreographer in 1994. Yasin graduated from Pakistan School of Fashion Design where he became proficient in putting clothes together and learning design, pattern making and sewing. All this consequently led to the opening of the luxury fashion house, HSY, which is a leading name in not just the Pakistani market, but is also recognized internationally. the philosophy behind them that led to the opening of my fashion house HSY. What were your initial opinions of working in the Pakistani fashion industry, and how have those opinions evolved ever since you started out? There wasnâ€™t much to the industry when we started. In a way, we as a brand grew with the industry. We defined and redefined trends and method to create and promote fashion in Pakistan. In the past 25 years, the Pakistani fashion industry has grown leaps and bounds and now when I look at it versus what it was two and a half decades

back, I feel really proud that I had a small role to play in all of this. You are one of the most esteemed and renowned designers in all of Pakistan, but having been in the business for decades, is there anything you would have done differently since the start of your career? There is absolutely nothing that I think I would have done differently. The triumphs, the failures and the people that I had the privilege to work with made me what I’m today. Today when I look back I laugh and cherish the memories I created with different people who are now like family to me. After 25 years in the fashion industry, how do you continue to create great, new pieces of clothing season after season? It’s all about keeping an open mind and sticking to our brand philosophy of never holding back and trying out new things each year each season. I strongly believe that as a designer, one should always think beyond borders, cultures and creative sensibilities. What is the HSY vision? How do you want men and women to feel when wearing your clothes? The HSY men and women are strong, independent and regal. They are modern day warriors and kings/queens of their own life/kingdom. They are head turners, norm breakers and are never afraid to express themselves. All of these traits are the HSY vision! Can you comment on the Pakistani menswear market? Is it an easy one to cater to? The Pakistani menswear market is both a challenge and an opportunity. I think with the rise of the digital age more and more men are now paying more attention to themselves whether its fashion, personal grooming or health. I think it’s a great trend especially when it comes to health. As the ‘King of Couture’, how would you describe your personal style? My personal style is mostly very basic and minimalistic, solid business or semi casual wear that is comfortable and compliments my active lifestyle. Fashion trends are ever changing, how do you stay up to date regarding these trends? I believe if you are well travelled, read regularly and follow what is happening in the world, it will automatically show in your work. I’m not a big fan of forcing trends. For anything to be part of my collections, it has to have a meaning and a story behind it in my mind.

RESIDENCE. A home over 100 years old in Karachi that is being painstakingly restored to its former glory, brick by brick, tile by tile. The HSY vision is to scout, reconnect with and restore former houses of legacy, creating a new momentum and soul -and THE place to be. Social media has become so pronounced in everything we do, what role do you think social media plays in fashion today? One of the biggest contributions of social media is that it has made fashion more accessible which in return has made people more acquiescent of it. It makes me really happy when I see people talking about international fashion trends, shows and happenings.

What would you say are the upcoming bridal trends? Longer shirts and silhouettes are making a comeback- they are flattering for every body type- they can be worn as is in the silhouette of a gown or with trousers as formals as well.

In your opinion, what skills are necessary to build a successful fashion house such as yours? There is no formula for it but I strongly believe that as long as you are willing to work hard and be experimental in your work and thought process, great things will happen for you.

Tell us a little about the HSY mansion; what was your vision behind it and would you say you have achieved that vision? We have recently relocated our new home/HQ in Karachi and with it the HSY legacy footprint continues as the brand moves forward to restore, renovate and revive the glory and splendor of yet another beautiful colonial home; from the HSY Mansion, now to the HSY

There’s so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. What advice would you give to budding designers just starting out and hoping to make it in the industry? One of my favorite quotes is ‘Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work hard’. There is no replacement for hard work, dedication and commitment. Never think small, always believe in the impossible and always give a 200% 2019

What was your vision behind Pine Court Murree? To develop a hillside in the mountains of Pakistan in a way that has not been done before while protecting the mountainside and at the same time enhancing its beauty. Where did the idea of Pine Court come from and what is it all about? The idea sprouted from the CEOâ€™s love for travel and mountains. Having a background in construction, he wanted to create something memorable and prove that good construction is possible even in the mountains if you set the intention right. Out of 10 what would you rate your own establishment? 100!

What kind of attachment do you have to this area? Iâ€™m not sure if it can be explained in words since this project is extremely close to our hearts and you can tell that by the way we have built it, by putting our heart and soul into it. It was a dream perceived a long time back and is finally a reality now.

Why did you choose this location as your site? Multiple reasons but primarily the breathtaking views from all corners of the site and the beautiful natural boulders scattered all over the hillside. More technical reasons include its short distance from Islamabad, its weather, its vicinity, the fact that itâ€™s off the main road and touches the forest land from one side, its interesting natural contours etc. What difficulties did you face along the way of completing your project? Quite a few actually, building in the mountains is in no way comparable to building in the plains. Everything takes double the effort, time and expense. From preparing the building base to bringing materials to the site as well as the short working time bracket that we get due to snow/rains etc. How long did it take to complete the rest house? Almost 2 and a half years. Prior to this project what were you planning on doing with this area?

Well the idea for this specific piece of land was always to make luxury mountain homes for the people to be able to enjoy luxurious, clean and aesthetically designed residences up in the mountains. What prompted the interior and exterior facade? We wanted to blend the architecture and interior with the surrounding landscape. We have majorly used stone and wood on the faĂ§ade to give a rustic feeling to the property and make it look like it belongs to the mountainside. The interiors are also inspired by the same notion of sticking to natural materials, so you will see a lot of wood, stone, leather and fabric. The furniture is a beautiful blend of rustic and contemporary styles. 2019

Tell us the most exciting thing you did during your trip? Everything about the trip was pretty exciting but Iâ€™ll have to pick the super bumpy jeep ride up to Kundol Lake. Throughout the journey there, I wasnâ€™t sure if the jeep would be able to make it up!

Any tips? If anyone is considering going to Kalam, one should go when the Behrain-Kalam road is made. The 32 km can be a 2-5 hour drive, because it is currently under construction. All our exciting adventures are up on our blog @travellingbasic so make sure to check those out for more tips!
