Can you recall how and why you became furniture designer? I started pretty early while I was still doing my BFA (Bachelors in Fine Arts) in 2007. I started as an internee with a renowned furniture designer and was then working part time with them and studying at the same time, till I did my Masters in Fine Arts. As an artist, I was always looking for an opportunity to harness my creativity and designing furniture pieces brought it all together, as it combined my love for painting and creating new things. How is incorporating abstract art into furniture different then normal furniture designing? Well, if by normal furniture designing, you mean furniture pieces in classic or contemporary styles that you can find in catalogues, then that’s kind of dull. It is when you combine good craftsmanship with creativity of abstraction, that I believe a piece of furniture becomes a piece of art. I feel like when I design a piece, I take into account space, colours, vibe and personality of the client to bring it to life. So this way its very different from regular run of the mill furniture. What was your inspiration for your latest Iconic Collection ? I have been painting nature inspired pieces like birds and flowers since 2013, as nature inspired me the most. It became pretty popular and still is but as an artist, I felt that I needed to grow and do some experimentation. I wanted to be more expressive and let my creativity flow freely in this new style which is why I chose to create more of an expression on the pieces rather than a picture.
What comes first the material or the design idea? Definitely the design idea or the inspiration for the design. I imagine the final look of that product in my mind and then think about how to achieve that look using different tools and materials. This process keeps developing till I achieve that image which I imagined. What part of the process excites you the most, designing the furniture or in coporating the art? Designing furniture is not something unique that only I am doing as there are many amazing designers out there. As an interior designer, I work with contemporary furniture too but when I incorporate art in my designed product or any regular piece its then when it becomes my statement piece. So for me incorporating the art in that furniture piece with my creativity is most exciting. What would you say are your values and ethics when it comes to designing? I have a high regard for values and ethics when it comes to my work, whether it’s a cake stand or a whole interior space, every client is important to me. I try to be fair and square in my dealings and by maintaining quality, durability within a reasonable price range. My main goal is to provide affordable yet practical and beautiful products to my clientele. What makes you different / unique from other furniture makers? Well, I think I haven’t seen customized Abstract hand painted furniture pieces being made by anyone else in Pakistan as yet! Every piece that I make is one of a kind, even I cant reproduce the same design “exactly” the same
way, so every piece is not only different from the mass produced stuff out there, but also individually exclusive. Tell us how you organize, plan and prioritize your work? As a freelancer, you have the flexibility to make your own schedule but you have to stay super organized in order to be on top of things. Being a Capricorn, I go into a lot of detailing, which I cant help and take my time planning each detail. I keep my records and notes organized and never compromise on deadlines! I push myself and my craftsmen harder in order to meet client’s needs as quality is more important to me than getting more projects. What do you enjoy doing apart from designing and making furniture? I try to enjoy everything, whatever life brings. I enjoy life, rain, travelling,getting lost, shopping, music, eating, exploring new places and what not. There is so much to cherish, you just have to savour it. You never know where you find your inspiration! Lastly , we came to know you renovate old pieces also , tell us more about how you extended in renovation? Renovation is our most popular thing! I feel that renovating old pieces of furniture not only brings them a new life but also people are able to hold on to pieces that are close to their heart, be it a bed set that you got on your wedding or a console that you have always loved but its polish has faded. In less then half of the actual product’s price we fix it, repair, repolish & reupholster.
