How and when did you start to teach Yoga? I started teaching yoga about 4 months back; Yoga had been a passion of mine, one that I wanted to explore further and so decided to take up a training for it. Shortly after that I started teaching. How long have you been practicing Yoga for? About 6-7 years; it’s a practice that I came across about 8 years back, and since then I have always oscillated back to. What led you on this journey? I generally enjoy being physically active and so have pursued a lot of various interests in that vein. I came across yoga as my mum used to practice it and it was something I really connected with. The larger context, philosophical roots of yoga and it’s purpose developed the intention in me of deepening my practice by getting a formal training.

BEYOND THE MAT! In conversation with Yoga instructor, Mahgul Kabir of SoulMat. She talks to us about her journey of self-discovery and her love for Yoga.

ABOUT ME!

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2019

What type of Yoga do you teach? I like teaching vinyasa and yin yoga. They are quite opposite to each other in the sense that vinyasa is more about a dynamic flow and a series of harmoniously linked movements that invigorate the body whereas yin is a lot about longer holds which takes the body into a deeply relaxed and meditative state. Both can be positively delicious at the right time! What do you prefer about this particular form of Yoga? I like the harmony vinyasa evokes; the movements are not isolated but linked and so the body in essence tends to move in a very fluid manner- at some point it almost feels like a slow dance. How relaxed do you feel after conducting a Yoga class? I tend to feel very balanced and calm after class, regardless of how physically intense or relaxing it has been. There is

a sense of being a little less engaged with the world and a lot more attuned to my own self, and that is how I would like my students to feel. What can one gain from Yoga? Honestly so many qualities and virtues- physically there is strength, endurance, flexibility- mentally it’s gaining self awareness, deeper consciousness , a calmer mindset, and a higher level of focus. What impact has Yoga had on your life? It’s been transformational in every sense of the word; it has allowed me to be a lot more comfortable in my skin and a lot less neurotic. How have you changed, evolved and transformed after your Yoga journey? I think I’m too early in my journey to have a clear bifurcation with regards to pre and post yoga, but the changes have been subtle yet impactful. As I mentioned earlier I’m a lot more self assured, have more patience and live my life with greater purpose- so more of spending time doing things that add value in my life and less of finding distractions to keep busy for the sake of it. What has been your biggest struggle in the practice? My biggest struggle in my practice is learning how to keep the connection with my breath. Yoga in its true essence is not as much about poses or asanas as it is about the breath, so shifting the focus from the external to internal has always been a big challenge. My greatest milestone is my life as it is now- to be able to teach it to others and do a decent job at it always makes me very happy! What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out on their Yoga journey? To take your time and cherish the experience of every practice. So often we are consumed with thoughts of wanting to master a pose or have an achievement or goal associated- try to let go of such mind driven objectives and wholly try to connect to the sensations and experiences that are unique to Yoga. 2019

zarminay haq Being a bride is possibly one of the most difficult processes one goes through! We plan our wedding day and what we will wear years before the actual wedding. Meticulous planning goes into each look from the colour combinations and embellishment of the outfits to the jewellery, hair and makeup. Here we feature some of our favourite brides and show you what they wore to their special days. Find out what they have to say!

I always wanted my mehndi outfit to be traditional yet modern. I really liked Mannequin's designs, I had the colour combination in my mind and after meeting the designers, Noor & Hira we decided on making a gold tissue gown paired with an intricately embellished choli. I paired two gota kinari dupattas giving the outfit an old school charm with a contemporary twist. I kept hair and makeup simple in order to keep the look light and fresh and wore kundan jhumkas, tikka and kalire to compliment the overall look.

For almost two months I was in search for the perfect outfit and then one day I realized that I wanted my jora to be made just for me, customized to the fullest. I was super lucky to have met the perfect team to whom I could explain what I was really looking for; a super traditional red and gold ensemble. I was beyond ecstatic when I saw my final jora. It was more than perfect! To complete the look, I wore a chokar and a long maala set and got my makeup done from Uzma Ashfaq.

For Valima, Republic made the perfect lehnga choli for me that complimented my polki set. I loved the subtle combination of mint green and silver. I got my makeup done from Uzma's on all three days and loved how she gave me completely different looks, each complimenting the dress, from mehndi to barat.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Why did you decide to become a designer? It happened 7 years ago, with love for fashion and no fashion degree or any prior experience in this field. I just gave it a shot, and here I am. Who has been your biggest inspiration and why? Not fashion related, but my Father; his character, his patience, his faith, his humbleness — I can go on and on.

BEHIND

Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult client. What was the situation and how did you react? Once a client wanted me to make a 4.5 lac bridal in 1 lac and to top it off, she wanted me to add more work to it, imagine. I refused; the appointment lasted for 3 hours, I kept giving her an option to customise within her budget but she wanted the exact same thing and more, and kept saying “It is possible, aap logon ko toh bridal bara sasta parta hai. Mujhe pata hai” Err, that’s not true and

incase you’re wondering, no, I didn’t take that order. What is the funniest question that you have ever been asked in an interview? “How much profit do you keep per outfit?” The person was seriously expecting an answer to this.. Lol If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing right now? Painting, I always wanted to pursue art. Which design house do you look up to and why?

A big fan of Elie Saab’s grand silhouettes, ethereal touch and pure opulence and Zuhair Murad’s intricate embroideries and embellishments. What is your creative process before you launch a collection? I research, draw inspirations and categorise. First, I decide how many outfits I want, then the colour palette and from there, I get into silhouettes and embellishments. I get these fashion epiphanies at midnight, so I get up from my bed, grab a pen and paper old school way, and start designing. From there, it’s the painful process of sampling, and shed-

ding a few tears out of frustration when something is not turning out how I want it to. What’s your motto or the advice you live by? “Take it one day at a time” What is you favorite song to belt out at in the car? Currently, Dholna - B Praak. (Please don’t judge me) and surprisingly, God’s plan - Drake. What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I’m a vegetarian who cooks chicken really well, I guess.. Who has been your mentor in this industry and what would you like to say to them today? Frankly, no one. I learnt everything myself, the hard way, the good way, with huge losses and success, with no one to guide me! take pride in this by the way. Ten years from now you will be… Running an old age home, and hopefully be on top of my game; designing wise.

CHALLENGE WITH MOMINA SIBTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY: KAMRAN MEHDI

This week we surprised Momina Sibtain of Momina’s Mixed Plate with our mystery box challenge. The mystery box contained handpicked statement pieces from Ammara Khan, Mahgul, Sania Maskatiya & Hussain Rehar. To add more spunk to her look we got jewellery pieces from BeeDazzled & Allure by MHT. We give Momina 10/10 for the way she managed to mix and match those pieces to create memorable statement looks!

The best part about this collaboration is that we were able to mix and match pieces from different brands and show how you can use different elements to create cohesive yet stylish looks! I’ve always wanted to experiment with a Mystery Box and this segment was super exciting for me.

I paired an Ammara Khan shirt with Sania Maskatiya pants and waist coat, a printed Mahgul clutch and earrings from Allure by MHT. All the elements came through perfectly, while creating a feminine look with an androgynous twist. I think something like this is good for a family brunch where you want to be a little conservative and yet stand out.

This has to be my personal favourite! I paired a Sania Maskatiya sari blouse with a Mahgul pant suit. It just goes to show, when paired well, eastern and western pieces marry well together. I tied my hair up in a messy ponytail and these beautiful earrings by BeeDazzled completed my look. P.s. I’m stealing the Cult Gaia bag!

This look is such a rebellion to our traditional wedding wear norm that it totally stands out! Here I’ve paired a bold textured bustier by Mahgul with these super feminine sari pants by Ammara Khan. Furthermore I stacked two necklaces from BeeDazzled because I just love it when you play around with different textures in jewellery! I kept the rest of my look fairly simple so the focus is not strayed from the elements we have used.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

ON AIR WITH KHALID MALIK

C

ACTOR AND RADIO SENSATION, KHALID MALIK, HAS IN A MATTER OF JUST A FEW YEARS MADE A HUGE MARK IN PAKISTAN'S ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. INITIALLY TRAINED AS AN ACTOR AND THEN A RADIO JOCKEY, MALIK HAS HOSTED THE POPULAR BREAKFAST SHOW ON FM89 IN THE PAST, AND IS CURRENTLY THE HOST OF MORNING JAM ON FM91 PAKISTAN. IF THAT WEREN'T ENOUGH, MALIK HAS ALSO ACTED IN PRODUCTIONS INCLUDING BAAGHI, CHAND PAY DASTAK AND URAAN. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? Professionally, I trained as an actor first and then I trained on the radio. Academically, I set out to do medicine but failed. Personally, gone through multiple relationships and I still don’t know much about relationships, I’m still learning. Did you always want to become an RJ? No, I always wanted to become an actor. So I trained as an actor and I got my diploma in acting. And then when I was living in Sydney and I kind of stumbled on radio. I went in for an acting gig and walked out with a radio job, and that’s where my radio journey began.

42

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2019

Who has been your biggest influence? So if you ask about my acting and who I looked up to growing up, I grew up in the ‘80’s and ‘90’s so my idol was Amitabh Bachchan, and still is; to the extent where I would copy his hairstyle, his general way of acting, all his famous lines etc.. I also listen to a lot of local and international radio, in fact a lot of what I learn is from international radio presenters and how they conduct some of their shows.

I never lived in Pakistan. My formative years were spent in Kuala Lampur, and then my high school years and the rest of my life pretty much, in Australia. Then I moved to Pakistan in 2007. I had friends who said, “Listen, there are a lot of channels opening up, you should explore Pakistan.” So I did, I came on a trip to see family, and I was scoping to see what was happening here. I came to suss it out in 2006, so I just took some numbers and went back and literally said “I’m moving to Pakistan."

You said you were in Australia, and then you finally moved back to Pakistan, how did you decide to come to Pakistan?

What would you say is the most exciting part of your job? This, meeting new people, being able to put a smile on someone’s face, and in

a very very tiny way, make some sort of minute difference in someone’s life through whatever characters I take on on television or whatever I do on radio; it’s a huge responsibility. What does your typical day look like? I sleep around 1 and I get up at about quarter past 6, and on an ideal day I would make myself some bulletproof coffee, and get to the studio and start my day. If I’m shooting for a serial, then I head to set after my radio show. So my day basically starts from quarter past 6 and ends at about midnight, because it takes that long. By the time I get home and eat, it’s a long laborious day.

whatever is thrown at me. Are you working on any exciting new projects currently? So there are two television serials. I play a journalist in one and I’m acting alongside Nadia Jamil whose returning to television. And the other one is directed by the same guy who directed ‘Baaghi’, its my fourth project with Farooq Rind, and I play the second lead in that. How has the Pakistani radio industry transformed over the years, from the time you began your career to now? Radio has become an established brand in Pakistan, and it has definitely helped me immensely in getting not only my name, but also a lot of commercial work that I’ve done that has come through radio.

Aside from being an RJ you have also worked on your acting skills and have done some movies. Were you always interested in becoming an actor or was that an opportunity you met with along the way of your career? You know its funny because a lot of people think I’ve just recently started acting, but I’ve actually been acting in Pakistan since 2008, but I think its only the last few years that I’ve done some good characters. Tell us about any challenges you have come across since starting your career. When I came to Pakistan I didn’t know anybody, so trying to get a foot in the door was a huge challenge. I was also told at the outset that I haven’t gotten the looks to make it in television. So there were two big challenges I was faced with, and I think they affected me so much that even today I still have that resonating somewhere at the back of my mind, that this is a tough industry, a competitive industry and I need to overcome

Where do you see yourself five years from now? I would essentially like to start my own thing whether it’s life coaching or my own little production house. And I would like to start exploring international markets with my acting. So there are some things at the back of my head, but I haven’t figured them out completely as yet. The Breakfast Show has, in a sense, revolutionized morning drive-time radio. How does that make you feel? Some people have used the term ‘revolutionized’, but I never really thought the show revolutionized anything, instead I just kept thinking of ways to keep improving it. I genuinely loved what I did and I do, and I think it’s the love and effort behind that that’s showing now. What’s your motto or the advice you live by? You’re always as good as your last story, gig, and show. Everyone’s replaceable and you’ve got to make yourself irreplaceable. And someone else told me this: “Show up”. No matter how things get, just show up. 2019
