Describe a typical day in the life of a makeup artist. Wake up at dawn, start getting ready for the day, make calls and make sure everyone’s on time, handle business email / texts on the way to work, show up at work for a 12-hour day, be fabulous all day long, spend precious evening / night hours with the fam, prep for tomorrow and dive into blissful sleep. Name some people from the industry that have inspired you? Nabila is a genuine inspiration and industry legend, with 10 consecutive awards, multiple salons and her own beauty brand, makes her a true role model. How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry? Professionally - at least five years. Personally, this has been a passion of mine for the last 15 years. I got started the way everyone else does - working hard, learning my craft, doing a lot of editorial work until my work started getting recognised and I could transition it into commercial work.

What do you love most about makeup? Being able to transform a person’s look and to allow them to take on a new role - whether it’s for a shoot or for an event. It’s amazing how a person can change inside once you transform them externally. If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you be? I’d like to say professional video gamer, but most likely a great homemaker. What advice would you give to a bride when deciding on a makeup look for her big day Build a moodboard of the makeup looks you like and be as detailed / comprehensive as possible - all discussions about makeup and looks are easier when you have a framework to work with.
How do you handle a bridezilla? With patience, a few deep breaths, calm music and a smile. I’ve been a bride myself and I’ve worked with hundreds of brides I’ve seen all the possible reasons for brides to get upset and most of the times it’s more in their head than an actual issue. You have to understand that, dissociate yourself from the situation and learn to project calm. How would you describe your signature look? I don’t work with a signature look - I prefer to look at it as being versatile and adaptable. Every subject is different and looks different, and they are likely to want different things. I take pride in being able to deliver their vision while accounting for the individual characteristics of the person’s face. Name three beauty products that you swear by. i dont leave the home without a moisturizer, a tinted lip balm and an eye cream What does the future hold for you? Definitely a lot of traveling this year and hopefully more nominations and some awards as well!

BARRIERS Kiran Chaudhry is a Pakistani lawyer, singer, actor, mother of two children and CEO of ANAYA by Kiran Chaudhry - a fashion brand that is quickly making a name for itself in the fashion and textile industry of Pakistan. In Pakistan, she was well known for her stellar live performances as part of the band Club Caramel and then after moving to India she has made a name for herself in fashion retail, with several retail stores bringing the best of Pakistani fashion to the Indian audience.

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? I have had many careers so I guess the only planned one was my career as a corporate lawyer in London. Then I returned home to Pakistan and kind of stumbled into my singing career after doing a few informal gigs in Lahore. As for my most recent career as a designer, that I definitely stumbled upon once I moved to India and realised what a good market there was for Pakistan lawn and fashion generally. What was your “aha!” moment? One of the first exhibitions I had in India was for a friend Faraz Manan, after which I was approached by a lot of other Pakistani designers as well. So I decided to have a multi brand Pakistani exhibition in Delhi, which turned out to be a massive success. After that I started a pop up store in a major mall to test out the retail market and I guess you can say that is when I realised I just couldn't get the kind of stock I needed, so I set up Anaya to cater to that need. Did you ever consider or experience a career change I have changed careers twice already! Better stick to this one (haha) When was the last time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it? Honestly, any start up is fraught with teething issues. Starting a lawn brand when the market was completely saturated, with no real training in the field, meant we had to learn as we went along and there were lots of challenges. But in a short span of two years, on very tight budgets, we are already being counted among the best lawns that Pakistan has to offer.
Traveling the world - I want to see every single part of this amazing planet and I hope to share that journey with my kids one day. What does nobody tell you about being the boss? When the buck stops with you, at work, it can get lonely. There is nobody else to complain to! But the rewards of leadership in terms of personal and professional growth far outweigh any negatives I believe. Name one boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? Seema Aziz - for her tenacity in business combined with her compassion for the underprivileged. She is a testament to how one can and should balance commercial success with the greater good of society at large.

What was the best advice that your mentor gave you? My mentor is my husband. He doesn't really give advice, but he is a living example of what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur and I have learned to much from him: taking bold risks, believing in yourself, giving your all to something, never giving up and enjoying the journey. What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life? My husband, my children and my parents. What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list?
Describe a day in the life of Kiran Chaudhry I wake up usually to the sound of a screaming toddler or baby, followed by calming them down, getting breakfast etc. The day is then a mad chaotic rush to complete design tasks, sort operational issues, devise strategy and carry out other functions on Whatsapp with my team (quite a challenge because I live in Mumbai and the team sits in Lahore!). In the evenings, I like to take my sons to the park or some evening classes, and before we know it, its usually time for dinner and bedtime stories. Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…” To me a Boss Lady is someone to dances to the beat of her own drum!
What did you learn from your biggest failure? My biggest failure taught me that when opportunity strikes, grab it. Don't overthink it, fortune favours the bold. Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with? I would like to have dinner with Angela Merkel - she is a true force of nature and a voice of reason in a world gone mad. What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours? Don't be afraid to be yourself. Follow your heart and believe in yourself because only you know what is best for you. Don't be afraid to try on many identities before deciding which you like most.
