Saira rizwan the persian rose
Saira Rizwan presents her new collection ‘The Persian Rose’ which is inspired by the indelible moments from the vintage era melded with the modern essence. It’s is the alluring indulgence in the notion of fairytales where the reality and dreams become one. The colours are derived from the beautiful Persian orchards, varying from the rich red tones to pastels, mostly in pink, silver, and gold tones. It is a tantalizingly intricate yet deliberately powerful collision of the impeccable artistry and overtly feminine appeal. From classic elements to a modern visual, the collection dedicates an ode to the wondrous, fleeting magical moments in life. Casual wear opts for a simple yet cool vibe, championing the 90s vintage Athleisure trend combining raw, relaxed denim with essential tees, roll neck sweaters and sporty knits. This look says it all for sporty and casual attire with rust textured knit double wrap snood with a navy textured crew jumper, perfect blue coloured jeans and black Mid Boots. I think this is the ultimate casual wear all men should look out for this winter.

I wore a navy down filled hooded jacket with brownish grey merino crew. To add more vibrancy to the look I paired it with dark blue stretch chinos and brown Borg work boots for a fashion forward yet laid back look.

My favourite piece from the collection was this Khaki check jacket which can be worn formally or semi-formally too, paired with a dark burgundy Oxford shirt and tan stretch chinos thus celebrating the 70s influence whilst remaining modern with a contemporary fit. To complete my semi-formal look I thought it was best to wear Next’s all time famous brown chukka boots to give the perfect contrasts revealing the uptown classiness.

It’s winter and the best time to put on your best suit for an official meeting or if you have a wedding to attend. Here, I decided to go with a burgundy suit with a plain white dress shirt and a sophisticated tie. Not forgetting footwear, shoes complete an outfit through classic designs with a modern twist and here I am wearing black leather formal shoes to gauge seriousness and intricacy to create a balance between modernism and simplicity.

*IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Tell us a little about your background. I am an engineer by education, but my career has been spent predominantly in business and finance roles. I did a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Economics at Yale, and joined Citgroup as a corporate banker after graduation.I had always wanted to start and run a business, and after a few years in a corporate environment, I felt i was ready to go out on my own. I left banking in 2005 and returned to Lahore to start my first entrepreneurial venture: a small particleboard manufacturing company. Running a business in Pakistan is pretty difficult to begin with, and I think running a small-scale manufacturing company is probably one of the hardest businesses one can do. It was an incredibly challenging pursuit, and I think it was the single greatest learning experience for me. To succeed, I had to apply everything I had ever learned, including using my engineering background to make bold and risky innovations. However, due to the deteriorating power and energy infrastructure in the country, manufacturing became increasingly less viable. I sold the company in 2008 and went back to the corporate sector, this time as a management consultant with McKinsey and Company in their Dubai office. I spent the next 8 years at McKinsey, working across a broad spectrum of industries and functional areas.
IN CONVERSATION WITH HAROON SETHI CEO OF KHAREED
"the way we serve customers is by enabling them to get multiple price quotes for nearly any product or service they need, simply by filling in a requisition form and submitting it." 36
PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE
2017
It was a great training ground and equipped me with the skills and know-how to be able to go into nearly any business and quickly learn the ropes. What ignited the spark in you to start Khareed? All through my time at McKinsey, I knew i would leave eventually to get back to entrepreneurship. I was preparing myself, learning what i needed to know, gaining experience and exposure, and of course, accumulating some seed capital. The moment I felt I had the right mix of things to kick off my next venture, I left. The idea for Khareed came from my time running my particleboard factory. As a small business owner, I needed to focus on my core business operations and my strategic procurement of raw materials and supplies. But there was also a large amount we were spending on running parts, machine tools, office supplies etc. I didn't have time to go around finding good quality vendors and haggling with them to get the best price. I had the idea of an online B2B marketplace where you could get price quotations from multiple vendors just sitting at your office. This was before there were as many online shopping sites as there are now.
How does Khareed aim to serve its customers? Khareed is an e-procurement platform. We provide small and medium sized businesses with an online software that they use to conduct their business buying and selling in a simple, convenient, and transparent way. It is especially useful for sole proprietorships and small businesses such as restaurants, small factories, workshops, clinics, and offices who need to focus on their core business and need help in sourcing vendors, finding products at the right price, and managing their procurement in a professional way. The way we serve customers is by enabling them to get multiple price quotes for nearly any product or service they need, simply by filling in a requisition form and submitting it. By using the Khareed platform, companies don't need to spend time and money going to far out places like Brandreth Road just to source products. Sitting in their office, they receive quotations from several vendors, giving
them a choice of competitive rates. What motivates you? I am motivated by the desire to create a really professional, high caliber institution that is able to take on a life of its own, independent of me as its founder or manager. I would like to see Khareed grow into a company that is seen by its employees as a great place to work and which is seen by its clients as a trusted, valueadding partner. How do you generate new ideas? I read a lot and keep applying the things I learn to my work and my day to day life. The fusion of different types of knowledge starts generating a lot of new ideas and through a bit of lateral thinking you start uncovering new applications. For a startup how difficult is it to build a successful customer base? Building a customer base is quite difficult, and for Khareed, there was a bit of a chicken and egg problem as we were ultimately creating a two sided marketplace of buyers and sellers and you can't bring in one side without the other. It took us about a year to get any real kind of customer traction. The first few clients are the hardest and then it becomes easier and easier as others see some success stories and follow. What kind of hurdles have you faced after starting Khareed? Finding and hiring the right talent was the greatest hurdle through most of the first year. Any company is only as good as its team members and building that up was a big challenge. The other big hurdle was and to a large degree continues to be break-

ing through the mindset in the market -there is a bit of aversion to doing things differently, giving new approaches a chance, and believing that a local software company might be as good or better than the international software companies. Who has been your greatest inspiration? I get inspired when I see anyone working hard to pursue a dream or a vision. There are countless examples of this everywhere around us. I think the greatest inspiration for me is seeing a man or woman working hard, making ends meet and providing for their family. Your software Khareed is a relatively new concept and shift away from the traditional methods of trading in business. How has the response been? The response has been very good among other startups and small businesses and a handful of the more 38

progressive MNC type large corporates. Beyond that we are continuing to work hard to educate other firms and increase awareness and showcase our worth. I suspect we are about 5 years too early, but i think this is the right time to start. Someone graduating from university today would have been born in 1996-- they will have grown up never knowing a world without the internet. All the new entrants to the workforce, to the business world are tech savvy and comfortable with innovation and new ways of doing things. Its only a matter of time before these young people take on leadership positions in companies and start to tip the scales in favor of non-traditional ways of business such as what Khareed is offering. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful E-entrepreneur? I think the skill set across entrepreneurs can vary-- there is no secret sauce in the skills. but in terms of personality attributes, i would say patience, persistence, and adaptability.
Where do you see your company/Software in five years? I hope that in five years down the lane we are serving clients in every major city of Pakistan. What advice would you give to young digital savvy entrepreneurs who wish to break into the E-market? I would advise the fresh grads to work for a couple of years in a professional company, whether its a tech startup or one of the more traditional corporates. They should get some experience, build a professional network, save some money, and then dive in with their full passion and commitment with a couple of like minded friends / partners. Young people always have a sense of urgency, and they dont want to waste any time lest someone else makes headway first with a similar idea. I have found that the idea is often far less important than the execution and for that you need experience, training, resources, and lots and lots of support.
