Rizq is a social enterprise working towards the eradication of hunger and food wastage in Pakistan. Set up four years ago, by three university students, their aim is to serve humanity by instilling compassion within those privileged enough to help.

» What exactly does Rizq do? Rizq is a people powered movement united to end hunger. As simply as we can put it, Rizq is an initiative that is led by people who realize the need to help, who realize the crisis at hand and so they work towards feeding the poor, day in and day out. Hunger is tackled by our different services such as Rizq Ration, i.e. monthly food provisions for a family of six, Rizq Daig, i.e. hygienic and healthy food for more than 75 people, Rizq Bachao, i.e. saving excess food from being wasted and channelizing it to food insecure communities, and Rizq School Lunch, i.e. the provision of school lunches to underprivileged schools. » What inspired three students, still at university, to do something so selfless? It was literally irony. Irony that we experienced when we saw so much food being wasted around us, and yet, people on the roads begging for it. That irony is what started Rizq, and that irony is exactly what keeps us motivated. » What’s that one thing that makes Rizq standout? People in Pakistan especially feel there’s a lack of transparency when it comes to social work and community organizations. That’s why they always want to be there in person to actually see their contribution help the underprivileged. But we as a society have become so focused on our own lives, that we barely ever get the time to actually go out and help someone. That’s exactly what we cater to. By having a process in which you can actually track your donation, and see in real time who you helped through the report you receive after the donation has been completed, firstly, there will be an increase in the number of people who

would contribute, and secondly, let you feel the kindness that you put in place when you donated. » What’s your biggest achievement? We see our achievement, every single day, when a donor walks in to the office to contribute, or someone volunteers out of the goodness of their heart, or we find people getting in touch with us to help out in any way that they can – that right there is our achievement; the ability to inspire enough people to share their kindness, their compassion, and their love.

And we want to do that by reducing food wastage, effectively utilizing philanthropic activities, and creating a network of food banks all across the country – with one in every food insecure community that can help empower the food insecure in that region and in turn make them part of those who don’t require assistance. » What kind of donations do you take? We have our five services through which one can monetarily contribute or give inkind food supplies, but we have recently begun our general fundraising as well. This is to reach out to people who simply want to contribute to the cause, without any expectations.

» How much of an impact have you had up till now? We have been really lucky, because even though we only started off 4 years ago, we have been able to serve more than 3 million meals, that is basically 3 million people who at least once in their life did not have to worry about how they will ensure their next meal. And for us, those 3 million times, we were successful. » How do you deal with day to day

activities? Well we have an operational team, which our Cofounder directly leads. The focal point of all of our services be it Rizq Ration, Rizq Bachao or Rizq Daig, all the food that we have, all the utilities required to maintain hygienic standards are found at our Rizq Food Banks, with two in Lahore, and 1 in Islamabad. And the best part is we have a volunteer base of more than 1500 people who are willing to be there and help out with distributions

» What’s in store next? We have lots in store, especially with Bakra Eid coming up! We want Eid to be that one time in which everyone gets to enjoy and celebrate the warmth of family and friends, leaving behind all the worries of the realities of their lives. And these people that we help every single day deserve that time more than anyone! So if anyone wants to help us achieve that for them, they can contribute by dropping off meat, and we can also come pick it up from their homes or even better, they can sacrifice with Rizq!

» Who is Nadia Sheikh? Mother to two boys, Pastel Artist, Yogi, College Counselor. » Tell us three things we don’t know about you. I would have to say there are many more than three! I am an introvert, I'm not a fan of cooking but I can bake the meanest Pumpkin Spice Cake, I love low budget Sci - Fi movies. » Tell us a little about your education?

I have a BA in Economics from Kinnaird College. I moved to the US in the year 2000 and got BS in Business Administration from the US as an adult student. Art was always a distant dream. I am mainly self taught but have learned under a critically acclaimed Pastel Artist in the US. » What inspired you to be an artist? Painting allowed me to be expressive in a way that I have never been able to through spoken language. It

has been an amazing process and journey. I never started painting with the intention of selling or exhibiting; It was personal for me. I continued for the experience and the catharsis. I am hooked forever! » Has art always been your true calling? It was my true calling from a very young age but with life and responsibilities, it remained just a dream. I worked as a college counselor for

many years. I would occasionally buy some supplies and dabble in acrylics but timing was never right. Until two years ago. That's when I joined a class and unleashed my artistic aspirations. I realised how centered and authentic I felt while creating art and how much peace it gave me. The purity of the experience is what keeps me going. » What kind of art do you practice? I paint with pastels on fine art grade sandpaper. Pastel pigments adhere to the sandpaper and allow me to layer paintings extensively. I love this medium; it's very forgiving. It can be used loosely and also accurately. The skill is in the firmness or gentleness of the hand, without the use of any tools. I paint still life that can be mistaken for photographs and also landscapes that are more traditional and "painterly". » What famous artists do you look up to? I'm a big fan of impressionist and post impressionist artists. I really admire Van Gogh. I appreciate how his pain and mental illness is reflected so beautifully in his work. I also love Mark Rothko's larger than life abstracts. » What is your biggest inspiration? I am inspired by the resilience of the human spirit. I get inspired by ordinary people who do extrodinary things everyday. People who face life with bravery and refuse to be victims. » Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? Easy there, one day at a time, let's stay in the now! » What was the best advice that was given to you? Jim Carrey's speech where he says " life doesn't happen to you, it happens for you". It resonated with me on so many levels and changed my perspective on how I view my life experiences. » What would you like to say to our followers? If you find something that allows you to be expressive like, art, dance or music, do give it a chance. You'll be surprised how it can heal and nourish your spirit.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? We have been planning reunion since 2016 and finally we decided to go to Isle of Skyee and meet in Edinburgh. My friend from United States was visiting me for three days in Scotland and we rented a car to drive to Isle of Skyee which is an Island in North west coast Highlands of Scotland Tell us about sites no one should miss out on? Fairy pools, they are known for miracle water. People believe that if you wash your face or take a bath in fairy pools, your skin will get lifetime glow. Old Man of Storr, you have to hike for two hours to get to the top and Neist point lighthouse, it is a walk for around an hour to get to the lighthouse.

Suggest places for a perfect night out? I would recommend Bosville terrace, the food is amazing there and it is right next to the harbor so the view at night is simply beautiful. What can you do over there to relax and unwind? The Quiraing is a perfect spot to unwind. You are on top of the mountain and down there is a small beach and there are waterfalls from mountain leading towards the sea.

Any tips? We booked a caravan through airbnb for two nights and stayed there. There are many hotels as well but we found a really nice heated caravan and it was cheaper too.
