Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? Cuba: went to Havana and Varadero! When we found out that the US was planning on lifting the sanctions imposed on the Cuba since 1962, we thought we simply had to go there before they opened another McDonald’s there. Because of the U.S embargo and hardly any trade with the West, Cuba looks as if it is frozen in time: the streets of Havana are strewn with old, oversized American cars from the 1950’s like Cadillacs, Buicks and Mustangs. The buildings are fascinating: there are old, crumbling Baroque-style cathedrals, and sleek 1920’s Art Deco buildings such as the Bacardi building in Havana. Who did you travel with? My mum. She’s super fun and easygoing and loves culture

and history. So the perfect person to travel to Cuba with. Where did you stay? Some little local hotel in Havana, and a beach resort hotel in Varadero (I’m sorry I can’t remember their names!) What are the best shopping spots there? I don’t really go on holiday to shop. I just went to art galleries, museums and restaurants. And then I swam in the sea loads. Suggest some amazing restaurants there? There was this fun, quirky little restaurant called Ivan Chef

travel diaries dise. I’d be at the beach for hours either basking in the sun, reading my book, or swimming. Actually just staring out into the sea was quite magical and serene.
Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on Well, just walking through the streets of old Havana is a sight in itself. But then there is the Museo de la Revolucion which has incredible architecture and history; there’s also the National Museum of Fine Arts; the 16th century Morro Castle. We also went the Museo del Ron Havana Club, which is a rum museum/factory.
Finally, any tips? Cuban’s are very charming people. They’re also very poor owing to the political-economic situation there. My mum and I would get into lively conversation with the locals, who were very sweet and helpful, but in the end would always ask us for money. And because they were so lovely and charming we would give in. And so quite a large proportion of our holiday money we gave away to people we found fun and felt sorry for. So my tip is, unlike my mum and me, be strong and don’t be easily charmed and give all your money away to strangers.
Suggest places for a perfect night out At night everywhere you look there are restaurants and bars with live music and people dancing out on the streets. So anywhere you fancy really! Most Cubans are great dancers. Someone tried to teach me to salsa but that didn’t go very well.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Well all I did when I went to Varadero was relax and unwind. The beach there is so beautiful, it feels like para-

Justo in Havana that had lovely lobster. And then there was the El Floridata bar in which Ernest Hemingway frequently enjoyed his daiquiris back in the 1930’s.
