Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? My longtime Iranian friend, Jalaleh, was getting married in her home country;Iran, during the Nouroz holidays and I decided to avail this amazing once-in-a-lifetime offer. We were all over the country, we landed in the holy city of Mashhad and went to Tehran, Qom, Esfahan, Shiraz, Kermanshah and then finally Sahneh; my friend’s hometown / the wedding town. Who did you travel with? I travelled with my Iranian friend Jalaleh, my mom Naghmana and my sister Fatima. Where did you stay? Oh boy, we were all over the country. Since my friend was Iranian, her family was all over Iran and not once did I get to stay at the hotel! Iranians, just like us Punjabis are extremely hospitable; they opened their homes and their hearts for us. So as I hopped from one city to another, I hopped from one house to another. However, there are hotels all

over the country, you can find many five star hotels in all the main cities; Tehran, Esfaha, Shiraz etc. You can easily book them via the trip advisor and online bookings are easily done! What are the best shopping spots there? Each city has it’s own specialty. I do not consider myself a shopaholic at all, but in Iran it was different matter all together. Personally, I was more interested in the traditional, strictly Iranian stuff, their colorful handmade bags, smooth silk scarves, engraved lamps and the famous Iranian carpets. While for me the traditional bazaar was the main attraction, there are many grand malls all over the country as well. As Tehran is the capital city it has many grand shopping Malls like Arg commercial complex and the grand bazaar. You can find Iranian high-street brands at Tajrish Square and on the famous Vali Nasr Street. Esfahan’s traditional bazaar with all the “sunaati” (traditional) stuff is at the UNESCO protected Naksh-e-Jahan Square. It is heaven for any tasteful shopper. The prices are reasonable and you can easily find beautiful hand painted wall hangings, clocks, Iranian decorative plates,

strolling through the new Julfa area which has a distinctive European feel to it, you can find many Armenian / Iranian cafes and restaurants. Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on. You must visit the UNESCO protected, Naqash-e-Jahan Square in Esfahan. The square was laid out in 16 century and till now is one of the largest squares in the World. Inside the square you can find the the incomparable Masjed-e Shah, the beautiful Masjed-e Sheikh Lotfollah, an old bazaar and the extravagantly decorated Kakh-e Ali Qapu (a palace from Safavid era). As mentioned earlier you must visit the New Julfa area in Esfahan and visit The Holy Savior Cathedral, which was announced in May as a forthcoming entry in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is a remarkable synthesis between Islamic, Armenian and European architecture.
In Tehran, the Golestan Palace (The palace of flowers) is another UNESCO World Heritage building. It is a beautiful, lavish walled palace with Iranian crafts and architecture. It has grand gardens with fountains and beautiful Iranian craftsmanship on the walls. I loved the Palace. Another palace is the Shah Pahalvi’s palace near the darband, north of Tehran. It’s comparatively a modern palace.

We mainly went to Shiraz to see the famous and colorful “Pink Mosque” originally known as Nasir ol Molk Mosque. It was built in the 18 century in the Qajar era. It is the mosque of whirling colors,it’s like walking inside a kaleidoscope. The mosque should be visited early morning, as the light through the stained glass is best then. It is built to catch the early morning sun. You must go and pay your respects to Hafez’s tomb in Shiraz. The city is famous for its various beautiful grand gardens, oh and the Persepolis / Takht-e-Jamshid, it was an old city in Persia built in 518 BC.

Finally, any tips? To avoid the language barrier, take a dictionary with yourself or learn basic sentences in Persian before you go. Before I left I was personally very confused regarding what to pack (cover your head situation), but I say this by experience,
