Tell us a little bit about you? An artist, photographer, graphic designer and copywriter: I am a man of few words who has crafted an alternate reality for himself. While constantly in search of the stability that went missing from the landscape of my motherland, I delve deeper into the realm of fortitude of my people. Did you go to school to study photography? Yes, I did. I went to the prestigious National College of Arts in Lahore. My major was communication design and so I was lucky enough to work in dark rooms, develop my own negatives and experiment a lot with traditional film photography. How long have you been a photographer? It feels like a lifetime but if you want to go to the technical aspects of it then I would say 5-6 years. What or who got you started in photography? The thought of losing the moments; the fragments of time that become lodged in the corners of the mind not easily accessible perhaps is why I do what I do. I fear that I will not remember; losing my memories is an alarming thought as without them, who are we but an unwritten book. Other than the morbid element, the passion of fine art was always there. In this case, discovering creative ways to shape light and shadow. How would you describe your style? I would say, vintage matte and nostalgia with a hint of poetic whim. 2017

What type of cameras do you shoot with? Full frame cameras. Would love to own a medium format or Leica. What is your favorite photography accessory other than your camera? My Cactus transceivers. If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why? 16-35mm F/4 L is the one, it is perfect for landscapes, interiors and dramatic environmental fashion shoots. It’s just a well-constructed, sharp and superior quality piece of glass and I love it.

What is your favorite computer/ editing accessory, other than your computer? Depends honesty. If I’m in it for the long haul, it must be my Wacom graphics tablet, otherwise the MacBook trackpad is unbeatable! How important is Photoshop in your final image? I usually start in post processing in Light room but initially everything was done in Camera Raw and Photoshop. Since I shoot RAW, I use some software to convert files and without the processing, an image is, in my opinion, not truly yours. One must develop a look and feel of their images otherwise you will never feel that sense of ownership an artist feels. What is the new equipment you have your eyes on? Researchable studio lights, an octabox bigger than Donald Trump’s ego. What are your views on cropping an image? In my opinion it is an author’s decision and it defines the wanted

and unwanted part of the image, the best ingredients should be kept while others cropped out. What inspires you? Everything that is fleeting. Eliot’s poetry. The mountains. Surreal and dreamy environments. Most of your work is landscape photography. Do you enjoy this more than fashion photography? Why so? It is more of a spiritual cleanse as I love travelling. The everchanging nature itself with the vast and endless mountains move me. They beckon me to the solace and solitude of their tranquility which is where I have captured my memories. It wasn’t a conscious decision to be honest. The commercial aspect of it kept me at bay but I have started enjoying it especially as I was the art director at Élan and therefore surrounded by fashion. Perhaps, a fusion of the two would be something I would love even more. What would be your dream destination for landscape photography be? Norway!

Which one is your favorite image till this day? “Garden of Stone” The image still sends chills down my spine mostly because it was an extremely surreal experience. I haven’t shared this image with anyone before but I suppose I should soon. It was during one of my journeys up north, an hour or so away from Kailash in the middle of a garden I can only describe as something from another world. The owner’s name was Muhammad Ali Jinnah and while roaming around, I pointed my camera in the direction of what is now the image you see but within that moment, this Greek looking sculpture of a child appeared and the moment I lowered my camera, he was gone. Name a Photographer that inspires you? Joey Lawrence If you had one wish… To work with Joey Lawrence. If someone said,‘How can I be Usman Khan’ what would you say? Nothing is as it seems, to be honest; nobody knows Usman Khan and no one should strive to be an illusion of somebody. What I can say is, be the sincerest form of your own self. Have the will to be recklessly passionate and perhaps take leaps of faith and not focus on the the obstacles around you. What you can be, what you should be and what you plan to be is all in your hands. Be afraid but do it anyway. 2017
