Beauty Products for beginners
BY AREESHA KAMRAN
When it comes makeup, one can be easily overwhelmed. There are so many makeup products on the market that it can be tough to figure out exactly where to start. These must have items I’ve rounded up are not only my holy grail products but are very easy to use for all the newbies out there.
PRIMER Flawless makeup can only be achieved with great skincare. After moisturising your face, always prime your face. A primer helps to keep your makeup stay on all day and prevents it from moving around. CONCEALER Beginners can skip foundation and opt for a natural look by just hiding their imperfections using a concealer. My absolute favourite concealer is Maybelline's Age Rewind. EYEBROW PENCIL Eyebrows are one of the most important features on your face. Perfectly filled eyebrows tie the makeup look together. Anastasia Beverly Hill's Eyebrow Pencil is ideal for beginners as it is easy to use and looks natural. MASCARA We all know applying eye lashes is a big hassle so there’s really no need to fiddle with them. Get voluminous and thick lashes by applying a few coats of Benefit's They're Real Mascara BLUSH Add a touch a colour to your cheeks with a classic rosy pink blush. Mac has my cult favourite blush in Fleur Power. LIPSTICK No makeup kit is complete without a classic red lipstick. Red is equally flattering on all skin tones and is versatile enough to keep you covered for any event. My all-time favourite red is by Mac in the shade Ruby Woo.

9 lines
A little about Hassan Iqbal: I am an artist, designer and an entrepreneur. I graduated from the National College of Arts, with a degree in communication design. I am currently working as an art director at Sapphire and co-creator of fashion and lifestyle label; 9Lines. I have freelanced for major companies, and I have a passion that goes beyond designing. A little about Saad Shahid: I’m a passionate entrepreneur, an art enthusiast & a dreamer. I am currently employed at Lahore School of Economics as a teaching professional. I cofounded fashion & lifestyle label; 9Lines. At a very early age I joined my family business and that is when I discovered that I wanted to give consumers not just what they want but what they don’t know they want yet. How did you get your idea or concept for 9Lines? Hassan: 9Lines was established to create a quirky fashion and lifestyle label that created original art for its merchandise; a label that had popular culture influences. As an artist & graphic designer, I was eager to experiment and push my creative boundaries. Saad is one of my best friends and he has his own experience with marketing, finance, operations and logistics. The idea behind 9Lines was to create a label that has separate 9 categories which cover everything. Our goal is to ingrain 9Lines into the everyday lives of our customers, because you don’t buy 9Lines, you live it. Saad: When I met Hassan in 2011, little did I know our lives would change forever. 9Lines just happened for us. The two of us had two different ideas. I wanted to produce quirky stationery, whereas, Hassan wanted to have an exhibition of his paintings. We transformed the simplest product into a colourful ride over the rainbow, with a wide collection including fashion, lifestyle, stationery and lots more. What does each partner take care of and is responsible for? Hassan: I primarily create and design artworks for products, digital media management, website and printing aspect. Saad: Coming from a marketing and entrepreneurial background I am responsible for strategy making, operations, logistics and production. Collectively we manage public relations and I 2017

respond to inquiries and manage customer relationships. Where do you see 9Lines in 5 years? Hassan: The online market is also growing tremendously and 9Lines is highly active on social media platforms. Digital marketing and promotions along with collaborations related to art, fashion and design are a few things we are working on currently to expand its reach into diverse markets across and beyond Pakistan. We’d like to have at least one store retailing our brand in every major Pakistani city as well as an international presence. Saad: We also want to evolve 9Lines into other categories like cutlery, footwear, rugs, bed spreads, curtains, furniture, sarees and even branching out into a restaurant chain! 9Lines is a Pandora box! With the wide range of ideas, we have and the appropriate mix of skills, we would like to be a cross between Paper chase & Moschino with a little cheating on the side with John Lewis! 44

What has been your best & worst memory while starting 9Lines? Hassan: the worst has to be not selling even one stationery item with the Elvis print on it in our first month! Best memory is every time a customer gives us their feedback which is 100% positive and our fan base keeps returning to us for their yearly stationery fill. It’s highly motivating! Saad: Every day is a best memory when you see your ideas coming to life. In the worst, our first ever lot of notebooks all got wasted because my vendor thought they were meant for Urdu and compiled them in reverse. Who designs all your products. I am in love with most products. Do you ever want to open a store as well? Hassan: I’m responsible for designing and coming up with ideas for all the artwork. Saad: Hopefully soon we plan to open a standalone store in Lahore then moving on to other cities. We are investing in our online presence to have a digital footprint as well. What do you consider to be the three biggest challenges facing your business right now? Hassan: The greatest challenge is within our own work space rather than outside of it. With two individuals trying to find a sense of perfection in art and fashion, we often reach a deadlock. We do understand that we both always have the best interest of the brand in mind, and always find a mutual ground. Saad: Maybe there will be more potential for disagreements in the future, when the operation gets bigger and more complicated. Two minds are better than one. Constantly reinventing work and tailoring our products according to what our customers desire is always tricky, but thankfully, we have been successful in that and in telling customers about what they want before they even know they want those things. What and who inspires you both? Hassan: We at 9Lines are inspired by our experiences which allow us to reflect in our design. Having studied and lived in Lahore, south asian art, artists and pop culture became strong influences in my design education. Pop art, Andy Warhol, the 60’s era, vintage photographs and Pakistani truck art are my main inspirations for designs. Saad: The oddity or ‘quirkiness’, and an implicit need to be original and fun, is our unique selling point for 9Lines. Everything that we do here is completely inspired by real life, places, people, and things in our environment. We take inspiration from everyday life, what we see and feel. 2017

FEATURING BEECH TREE
ready, set, style! th is week s ahar noon s tyles beech tree o utfits & makes them her very own! The pin-striped shirt from Beechtree is perfect for a summer brunch. It's loose silhouette made me want to tie it up to add a little definition around the waistline and paired it with tailored grey suede wide leg pants. For this look I kept the jewellery minimal cause the outfit is speaking for itself.

I paired this breathable white cotton shirt by Beechtree with a pair of deep blue jeans from Zara to go for a classic summer look. I opted for some statement jewellery pieces to add an ethnic touch to it and kept it simple by wearing plain black strap nudist stilettos from Stuart Weitzman.
