mirch i ali Who really is Mirchi Ali? How would you describe yourself in three words? Intense, Dark and Subversive Your edgy name must raise a few eyebrows! Tell us about the switch from Muhammad Ali to Mirchi Ali. It does actually; everyone always questions me about it. It’s a name given to me after my second day at Indus, I was ragged and asked to eat a mouthful of chilies. A little while after hell broke lose and the admins got involved. When I walked through the front courtyard the humans of Indus Valley parted to make way for me, I felt like Moses. Ever since I’d hear everyone saying ‘Uff Uff Mirchi’, I was famous and it sounded sexy – So I’ve embraced it. You learnt from one of our toughest institutes. What would be your best and worst memory at Indus Valley School? Worst – Second day ragging for sure! Drank 17 bottles of water after eating those chillies and ended up being sick to my stomach! Best – I made countless memories at Indus Valley. The journey was a great one for me, especially learning from my teacher Naheed Yahya. I did a lot of work with her and learnt immensely. What was the idea behind your thesis, would you consider it the beginning of your journey as the artist you are today? Definitely! It was my introduction to the world of art. I met collectors, curators, critics and all of them took a lot of interest in my work. The thrill of recognition reassured me, I had something to offer. I’ve never had to reach out to anyone since; they’ve always contacted me and felt like magic! Your work is bold and bright, there’s life in all of your work. What is the inspiration behind your work? I identify with my mother, she has raised me single handedly 2017

and I see the world through her eyes. My concerns evolve over time but there’s a thread that connects all of my work. I come from a family of artists; all of my skills come from my mother. However, one thing is certain, my work is not traditional and I am not a traditional artist. I use a photograph as a reference to my painting, my friends reenact a scene, I do the costumes and my paintings end up becoming the product of a large performance. Is it true that you draw inspiration from SMS’s too? I do! Only once though! I loathe misogynistic forwards that objectify women, so when I got a message that referred to women as fruits I couldn’t resist adding my own twist to it. If women are fruit then the problem with men is they love fruit chaat. 48

Your paintings speak volumes but what is the message you really want to convey? There isn’t one specific message I’m conveying. Initially my thesis started off as a rejection of all the preconceived notions of masculinity. Prince Saleem and Krishna were two men I was extremely fascinated by. They were flamboyant warriors with kohl in their eyes and henna on their hands. These men were comfortable in their skin and confident about their sexuality. In today’s day and age an iota of such flamboyance is labeled and ridiculed. All my paintings carry different messages. My inspirations come from everything that I do and all that I see and each message is different. What has been the strangest/funniest comment you have ever received on your work? Sometimes when I paint celebrities they get a little offended till they dig deeper and see the true meaning behind the work. The celebrities I paint are only a vessel for the greater message. I can’t pinpoint a specific comment but every artist puts a part of his soul in his work and you can’t please everyone. I’m not responsible for someone elses understanding. Kill, Inspire to be or marry their work. Put any three of the artists you know in these categories. I would love to kill lots of artists! Slow painful deaths for them all! However there are lots of artists I’m inspired by such as Michael Angelo, Frida Kahlo, Caravaggio, Cindy Sherman, Yayoi Kusama and many more. Recently after a few changes I believe love is over rated and I don’t agree with the constitution of marriage. Which painting of yours is your favorite and why? I can’t choose! My babies! I give birth to them in a way. It would be unfair to pick a favourite! Do you have any more shows lined up, what are the future plans? I’ve received lots of offers to teach and I’ve started teaching three drawing and design courses. However, maybe I’ll branch out and learn Kathak or enroll into culinary school. What words of wisdom would you like to impart on our readers. Don’t lick ass!

Enchanted Jaipur one is by far my favourite. It reminded me of the first time I met Zara and she was wearing pink and Lilac chunri, which is exactly what Zara's clothes are meant to do. Take you back in time. It's so utterly refreshing to see that in all these years Zara's work has matured and come a long way. Yet Zara always stays true to who she is and it shows in all her designs. I hope I get this one before it's sold out. Rumour has it I'm already kinda late!!
