Pakistan, Lebanon reaffirm commitment to stronger security cooperation

RIME Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday stepped up government efforts to cushion citizens from rising fuel prices, strengthen Pakistan’s security and diplomatic ties with Lebanon and reaffirm the country’s commitment to democratic governance and parliamentary supremacy amid a challenging regional environment. Chairing a high-level meeting to review progress on the special fuel relief scheme, the prime minister directed authorities to ensure maximum outreach to deserving citizens and make the registration process simple and accessible. Under the scheme, owners of motorcycles, rickshaws and vehicles with engine capacity of up to 800cc will receive targeted relief on petrol following the recent increase in petroleum prices linked to the situation in the Gulf. Prime Minister Shehbaz ordered that the SMS required for registration be made free of cost so that eligible
citizens could access the subsidy without incurring additional expenses. The relief scheme for residents of Islamabad will be launched during the night between September 14 and 15, while petrol relief will be extended across the country, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night between September 16 and 17. The prime minister directed Islamabad’s administration, including the chief commissioner and inspector general of police, to remain in the field to guide citizens through the registration process. He also called for elected representatives and volunteers to be mobilised across the country to assist people with registration and other formalities. Prime Minister Shehbaz ordered a comprehensive awareness campaign on the scheme across print, electronic, digital and social media platforms, stressing that all available means should be used to ensure the relief reached the maximum number of deserving citizens.

Lebanese Minister of Interior and Municipalities Ahmad Al Hajjar called on Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (COAS & CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters (GHQ) on Monday during his two-day visit to Pakistan. The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, the evolving regional security situation and prospects for further strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in the security domain. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), both sides emphasised the importance of strengthening institutional linkages and promoting greater cooperation between the security institutions of Pakistan and Lebanon. Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relations with Lebanon and expressed Islamabad’s desire to expand mutually beneficial cooperation in areas of shared interest.
