T least 15 people, including six police personnel, were martyred, while dozens of others sustained injuries when a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the Kabal police station in Swat on Sunday after being prevented from entering the premises, police and rescue officials said. The powerful explosion, which struck near the police station's main gate, triggered a massive emergency response as security forces cordoned off the area, launched a search operation and shifted the wounded to nearby hospitals. Authorities later declared a district-wide emergency to ensure uninterrupted medical and rescue services. District Police Officer (DPO) Omer Khan said that 15 people were martyred, including six police personnel, while nine civilians were wounded and 25 critically injured people were being treated at Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital. According to Malakand Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Fida Hussain, the suicide bomber attempted to force his way into the Kabal police station but was intercepted by a police officer before he could enter. "A suicide bomber attempted to enter Kabal police station but was stopped by a police officer before gaining access. The attacker then detonated explosives at the police station's main gate," he said. The DIG noted that the police lines and several other sensitive government installations were located adjacent to the police station,
indicating that the timely intervention by the police officer may have prevented an even greater tragedy. He said preliminary reports suggested that four police officers sustained serious injuries, while two civilians were also wounded. Hussain added that a protest by local youths was taking place in the area at the time of the attack, but
clarified that the protest venue was located some distance from the site of the explosion. Speaking to AFP, DIG Fida Hussain confirmed that police personnel were among those martyred and said another body, believed to be that of the suicide bomber, had also been shifted to the hospital.
