Intelligence agencies have launched an investigation into two former Adiala Jail officials over allegations of facilitating the incarcerated founder of the Pakistan Tehreeke-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, according to sources. Media reported that former Deputy Superintendent Muhammad Akram and Assistant Superintendent Bilal were questioned by intelligence personnel in Rawalpindi regarding their alleged involvement in providing special assistance to the PTI founder. Both officials were removed from their positions on June 21 upon the recommendation of the intelligence agencies. Sources indicate that the officers were accused of having special access to Imran Khan’s cell and providing him with undisclosed facilitation. The investigation into the facilitation of the PTI founder has reportedly been expanded by intelligence agencies, with the scope of questioning widened to uncover further details. Last month, Imran Khan criticised the alleged interference of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in civilian affairs. During an informal media talk inside Adiala Jail, the incarcerated former prime minister said, “We have filed a petition in court questioning the presence of ISI majors and colonels in Adiala Jail.” He added, “The ISI has no authority in civil matters or judicial affairs. The prison superintendent is following ISI orders, leading to the transfer of two officers to ensure no leniency is shown to me.”
“Their unrelenting spirit and sacrifices continue to inspire generations,” it added. The armed forces reaffirmed their “unwavering commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and values, upholding the trust reposed in them by the nation”. “As we celebrate this Independence Day, we reiterate our resolve to preserve our hard-won freedom with honour, dignity and an unshakeable commitment to our cherished ideals,” the forces vowed. National command centre instructs all international travelers entering Pakistan be closely monitored for symptoms associated with mpox ISLAMABAD

The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Wednesday issued a heightened alert to border health services in response to a global surge in monkeypox cases and the recent emergence of the Zika virus in India, besides scheduling its meeting to review the emergent situation on Thursday (tomorrow). The development comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak of the viral infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to neighbouring countries. Mpox can spread through close contact. Usually mild, it is fatal in rare cases. It causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions on the body. In its alert on Wednesday, the NCOC instructed that all international travelers entering Pakistan be closely monitored for symptoms associated with monkeypox. “Any traveler showing
signs of infection, be immediately isolated in designated quarantine wards to prevent the potential spread of the virus”, the NCOC directed the border health services. Pakistan has so far reported nine confirmed cases of monkeypox, with one resulting in death. All the affected individuals had recently returned from Arab countries, indicating that the virus has not yet taken root locally. Determining a disease outbreak as a “public health emergency of international concern” or PHEIC — the WHO’s highest level of alert — can accelerate research, funding and international public health measures and cooperation to contain the disease. The outbreak in Congo began with the spread of an endemic strain, known as clade I. But a new variant, clade Ib, appears to spread more easily through routine close contact, including sexual contact. It has spread from Congo to neighbouring countries, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, triggering action from the WHO.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Asim Munir, asserted on Tuesday that foreign powers are orchestrating a rise in what he described as ‘digital terrorism,’ aimed at creating divisions between state institutions and the public. Addressing an Independence Day parade at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, General Munir emphasized the need to combat these challenges under the framework of ‘Azm-i-Istehkam’. He cautioned that those attempting to
destabilize the country would ultimately face failure. The COAS addressed multiple critical issues, including escalating tensions along the Western border, the resurgence of the Fitna Al Khawarij (FAK), commonly known as the Tehreeki-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the ongoing unrest in Balochistan. He urged the Taliban government in Afghanistan to prioritize its longstanding relationship with Pakistan over supporting the FAK. In his speech, General Munir also criticized the growing misuse of social media to spread misinformation, which he claimed is
being manipulated by the country’s adversaries to incite disorder and weaken the military. He underscored that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, it also establishes clear boundaries. In a pointed reference to recent protests in Balochistan, General Munir assured that the military, in collaboration with both federal and provincial governments, remains dedicated to safeguarding the security and welfare of the Baloch people. He warned that any efforts to destabilize the province would not be tolerated. The COAS extended gratitude to friendly nations, including China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and Turkiye, for their continued support. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to the Kashmir cause and condemned the ongoing atrocities in Gaza.
