INTRODUCTION
You’ve made a brave and thoughtful decision by picking up this planner. It’s not easy to think about death, and it’s even harder to prepare for it. But by doing this, you’re taking a significant step toward ensuring that your family is cared for when the time comes.
As a young woman, I didn’t relate to the thought of death—it was something that happened to others. The day I witnessed the chaos and heartbreak in my own family after a loved one passed away, I realized how close and impactful it can be. In that moment, I saw firsthand the confusion and heartache that arises when someone leaves this world without clearly communicating how their affairs should be handled. The pain of loss is tough enough on its own, but when added to the unanswered questions and unresolved issues, it can tear families apart.
This book is a resource designed to help you get your affairs in order now so that your loved ones don’t have to struggle with the unknown later. My goal is to guide you through the estate planning process, offering thoughtful considerations that will bring clarity to your final wishes and peace of mind to you and your family.
Take your time as you move through these pages. While it may feel daunting at first, each step you take brings a sense of control and preparedness. There’s no right or wrong pace—what matters is the care you put into it. I hope this planner provides you with comfort and clarity, knowing that you’ve done everything you can to make things easier for those who matter most to you.
Let’s face the reality of death together and take the necessary steps to prepare for it. This planner will show you how.

LIFE PLANNING CHECKLIST
Before diving into the sections of this planner, review this checklist for an overview of the important steps you should take as part of your estate planning journey.
WRITE YOUR WILL AND/OR TRUST: A will outlines your wishes for the distribution of your assets and the care of any dependents after your death. To ensure that it’s legally sound, your will should be written clearly, signed, witnessed by at least two disinterested parties, and comply with your state’s laws regarding wills. Consulting with an estate planning attorney can provide further assurance of its validity.
PREPARE A LIVING WILL: This is another type of will you need to have in the event that a medical condition prevents you from communicating your desires. Work with your healthcare provider or attorney to outline your preferences for life-sustaining treatments.
SELECT A POWER OF ATTORNEY: Appoint a trusted person to make decisions on your behalf if you become incapacitated. Discuss your wishes with them and have the necessary legal forms completed.
SELECT AN EXECUTOR: This person will manage the distribution of your estate after your passing. Choose someone responsible and provide them and your spouse with copies of your will.
DESIGNATE A BENEFICIARY: Choose one or more beneficiaries to receive portions of your estate and make sure they understand your intentions. Update this designation as needed.
MEET WITH A FINANCIAL PLANNER: Schedule a meeting to review your financial situation. A financial planner can help you protect your accounts, set up retirement plans, and make sure your finances are structured to support your loved ones.
CREATE A LIST OF ASSETS: Document valuable possessions in your home worth more than one hundred dollars—furniture, jewelry, electronics—as well as non-physical assets, such as 401ks and life insurance policies. Use page 104 to start your inventory.
CREATE A LIST OF DEBTS: List any outstanding debts, including mortgages, loans, and credit card balances. This will help in assessing the total value of your estate. Start with page 78 for guidance.
ORGANIZE HOME FILES: Organize important documents (titles, deeds, tax information, etc.) in a secure place. Create a filing system to ensure your family can easily access these documents when needed. Stow these files in a safe deposit box or fireproof safe alongside your planner.
DESIGNATE SENTIMENTAL ITEMS: Optionally, prepare individual boxes with meaningful keepsakes for children or other family members. Label them with instructions on who should receive each item.
UPDATE YOUR LIFE INSURANCE POLICY: Every five years, or after major life events, review your life insurance policy to ensure the beneficiaries and coverage align with your will.
PURCHASE BURIAL OR CREMATION SERVICES: If you prefer burial, purchase a plot and headstone in advance. If cremation is your choice, research services and make prearrangements to reduce stress for your loved ones. Use pages 142–145 to organize this information and aid in your funeral planning.
SHARE YOUR ESTATE PLANNER WITH YOUR POWER OF ATTORNEY AND YOUR EXECUTOR: Discuss this estate planner with your power of attorney and executor and let them know where it will be stored, as well as where you have stored other essential information and files they may need in the future.
