Welcome to InTouch magazine – your insight into the latest news and updates from across PAHT. In this edition, you can read about Event in a tent, our spectacular annual staff recognition event. The event will be held in a marquee on the helipad at The Princess Alexandra Hospital from Tuesday 14 - Thursday 16 September. You will have the opportunity to attend a range of sessions to help you develop your career; celebrate and have fun with your colleagues; and learn about PAHT and our plans for the future. You will also be able to catch up with the sessions later by watching the recordings on our Event in a tent: Reloaded YouTube playlist. In addition, you can find out more about our PAHT 2030 strategy, from our range of engagement sessions this month to the new wall graphic at The Princess Alexandra Hospital. We are on the verge of a defining moment in PAHT’s history. What lies ahead is a journey of transformation and improvement that will lead us successfully into the future, enabling us to deliver modern, integrated and outstanding care that keeps our growing and ageing population healthier. Another exciting development featured in this magazine is progress with our new Extranet – thank you to everyone for sharing your feedback and suggestions at our recent engagement sessions. We have also introduced We Appreciate You (WAY) days this month to show our appreciation and how valued you are. The first recipients of the WAY day were our hardworking porters, who received a voucher for a complimentary hot breakfast and hot lunch. Well done – you can read more on p.15. It is almost the time of year when we invite you to have your say and complete the NHS Staff Survey. It is extremely important that we hear about your experiences. We want to know what you feel makes PAHT a good place to work and also where we need to improve. Each year, we make many changes as a result of the staff survey findings – read more on p.9. This magazine is for and about you, our #PAHTPeople – please contact the communications team if you would like to see your team featured, at paht.communications@nhs.net. New chair appointed We have appointed a new chair of the board following the retirement of the former chair, Steve Clarke, in June. Hattie Llewelyn-Davies OBE joins us in September and will continue in her current role as chair of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust until March 2022 when she is due to step down as her term of office completes. PAHT 2030 and our new values Thank you to all of you who have attended our recent briefings and events about PAHT 2030 and our new values and taken the time to share your thoughts and ideas. PAHT 2030 is our organisational-wide strategy to transform and improve what we do so we can meet our vision to be a modern, integrated and outstanding hospital. You are key to the success of PAHT 2030 and so we want to know what you need in your role or team to help us deliver it. During August, the strategy team have been out and about hearing your thoughts and gathering your feedback. They’ve met with a wide range of people across the organisation, on the main site, St Margaret’s, Herts and Essex and Kao Park. Your feedback so far includes the need to: y be more transparent and improve cascade of information to staff y ask patients and staff responsible for delivery how services could be better y make sure any change is
‘done with’ rather than ‘done to’ staff y break down the silo working y be better at celebrating our successes and harnessing the strengths of our highly talented people We still want to hear from you Do you have strong views and want to have your say on our future PAHT? There is still time to feedback before we launch PAHT 2030 this September at Event in a tent.
What you have said so far... “Always engage with the patients and ask them what they think. "They will give you the insight on what needs to be addressed first.”

“Implementing the new values will equip us to deal with increasing health inequalities and complex medical problems and explore what we can do to reduce the burden of disease upon patient populations.” As a reminder, we would like you to consider: y Is it clear enough how we’ll deliver the strategy? y Are the ways we’ll deliver the strategy the right ones, or are there more? y What will your team do this year to achieve them? Please send your feedback to paht.strategyteam@nhs. net by 31 August 2021. InTouch briefings We held InTouch briefings on Tuesday 10 August and Thursday 19 August to introduce our PAHT 2030 strategy as well as find out more about our new values. For those of you who couldn’t attend, you can watch the recorded briefings via the link that has been shared. Staff Survey coming soon – please share your feedback The NHS Staff Survey will open on 4 October and it is important that you tell us what you feel makes PAHT a good place to work, and also what improvements you would like to see in our organisation. We can all work together to make positive changes – from new ideas you can implement at a ward or department level, to developments that impact on PAHT as a whole.
These include initiatives to improve our culture, in particular supporting your health and wellbeing, and your development opportunities at work. Your feedback has helped us to make a wide range of improvements, including the forthcoming staff area (the Alex Lounge), and further signposting to the health and wellbeing support available to you. Other improvements and new initiatives have included the below – we will be sharing more soon: y Our Back to better programme of events, webinars and information; providing an opportunity to explore a range of culture and operational improvement topics y Increasing the number of Freedom to Speak Up Guardian roles (from two to seven) y Developing our new Trust values and a new behavioural framework, ‘This is us’ (which is being

The survey helps to shape our services, inform improvements to our organisation and improve staff experience, which in turn supports us to provide high quality care for our patients. It is important that you are all part of this improvement and making PAHT a great place to work and receive care. Please look out for more details, which we will be sharing with you soon.
Please take the time to respond to the survey – you will be supported to do so through protected time during your working day. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and all feedback is confidential. Responses are gathered by an independent survey company, Picker. They then collate the results and produce a report that shows the summarised results at an organisational level, divisional level or department level. As a measure to further protect

New procurement and finance system pilot now live As you will be aware, we are introducing a new procurement and finance system to significantly improve the experience of our people. GHX is a modern ordering system for goods and services and will fully replace EROS in 2021. The integrated system, with improved functionality, provides a major upgrade. The pilot is underway in main theatres, EBME and IT, and will run until mid-September. EROS will run parallel with GHX until all areas are fully trained and migration over to the new system is complete. Benefits include: y The design of the system is modern and intuitive. y You will be able to see images of items when ordering, similar to popular shopping websites (pictured above). y The Supply Chain catalogue will be available in a single combined catalogue, without a separate login. y The system will be fully integrated with procurement and finance for a streamlined user experience. y Invoices for authorisation will be sent electronically to the budget manager and can be approved with one click. y GHX also includes an electronic stock management system,

where stock items can be scanned in and out with handheld scanners. Up-to-date information about the volume, value and location of stock will be available at all times. This removes the need for year-end manual stock takes. The stock system will automatically prompt when to reorder new items. It will support ‘scan for safety’ and enable us to easily locate items if they are recalled for safety reasons. It is fully compliant with best practice procurement and finance standards.
Next steps
y GRN/invoicing: Stores will receipt proof of delivery only and end users will receive goods receipt notes, enabling invoices to be paid.
y A build of inventory module (top up/scan in, scan out), with a pilot in main theatres within the next eight weeks is also planned. For assistance, please contact Sajit Abraham (sajit. abraham1@nhs.net) and/ or Kelda Alleyne (kelda. alleyne1@nhs.net) in the first instance. For Integra, please contact Robert Kingston (robert.kingston@nhs. net) or Kelda Alleyne (kelda. alleyne1@nhs.net). Thank you to everyone who has been involved in testing - your feedback is invaluable. We will keep you updated with progress. For more information, please contact Kelda Alleyne, project manager, at kelda.alleyne1@ nhs.net, or Charlene Clark, transactional buying team manager, at charlene. clark1@nhs.net. 10
Welcoming our EPUT colleagues We are pleased to welcome our Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT) colleagues who have joined us at Gibberd Ward. The team, who were previously based at Avocet Ward at Saffron Walden Community Hospital, are temporarily using the space in Gibberd Ward while their ward is being refurbished. They provide a rehabilitation service for care of the elderly and will be with us for approximately seven weeks (they joined us on Tuesday, 10 August). We encourage you to support your new colleagues and be aware that as a 24 hour service, they may need your assistance during this time period, including in urgent situations. Please give the team a warm welcome.
Healthcare group update: Cancer, cardiology and clinical support services (CCCS) We would like to thank our teams for the resilience that they have shown and their willingness to embrace and overcome a number of recent challenges. Our teams continue to turn issues into opportunities and do what they do best, making a difference for our patients, day in and day out. We are all immensely proud of you all and the job that you do. The opening of the new Williams Day Unit and the new mortuary (31 August) provide viable improvements to our services, a new CT scanner for the emergency department and the planned improvement works to the aseptic unit and robot in pharmacy will further enhance and provide improved services for our patients. The cancer, cardiology and clinical support services (CCCS) management team

Our patients said... "The A and E department staff were all amazing. They did their utmost to relieve my intense pain and anxiety which went on for hours. I kept being reassured and listened to. "I was later transferred to a ward where I was seen by the pain team. I was treated with enough pain medication, antibiotics and TLC as much as possible. "On the day of my discharge the ward manager and other staff were so attentive to my needs and kept asking if I felt well enough to be discharged and I assured them I was. "I praise every single one of the nurses, doctors, healthcare assistants and ward managers that tended to me. I highly recommend this hospital to anyone."
"My mum lost the fight this morning I cannot thank you enough for everything you've done for my mum and me. You were our saviour in a very hard time."
"I am writing to say how proud I am of the people who cared for me before/during and after my two recent operations. "They have all touched my heart with their selfless help and support." 13
Communications team shortlisted for two awards The communications team have been shortlisted twice for a national awards programme. The team has been shortlisted in the categories of Best COVID Response and Best Event at the Institute of Internal Communication Awards, in recognition of their strong focus on engagement with people across PAHT during the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 immediately placed an unprecedented demand on the communication of information and clinical and national guidance designed to protect people and patients. In March 2020, lockdown was introduced and a clear need was identified to move communications and engagement to a virtual and digital format, whilst remaining accessible to colleagues who were working on the frontline in clinical settings. The switch to virtual and digital platforms was integral to output and the way the hospital shared and presented information, and this evolved as the team identified further communications needs, including:

Our new Extranet update Our Alex Intranet is retiring soon. Thank you to everyone who attended one of our new Extranet engagement sessions and gave your insights, ideas and opinions. Your feedback is invaluable to shape the design, functionality - and even its name. We saw people from a variety of roles get involved, across our clinical and support services. The providers of our new Extranet are now collating all of your feedback to refine the design. We will keep you updated with progress. Thank you for working with us to make the Extranet the best information hub for everyone.
#PAHTPeople: We Appreciate You (WAY) We recognise that our fantastic PAHT people work extremely hard to help make a difference for our patients and provide high quality care, or support those who provide patient care, each and every day. To show our appreciation and how valued you are, we have introduced our first WAY days. WAY stands for: We Appreciate You and is a day: • Dedicated to a particular team to show you how much you are appreciated. The first recipients of the WAY day were our hardworking porters (pictured). To show our appreciation, we provided each porter with a voucher for a complimentary hot breakfast and hot lunch. • Stay tuned to see if your team will be the recipient of the next WAY day. This will be chosen out of a hat by one of the porters (the current recipients). Please send any questions about WAY days to the learning and organisational development team at paht.learning@nhs.net. 15
Improving patient outcomes and experience One of our top priorities as a trust continues to be to improve our patient outcomes as well as the experience for our patients. One of the measures of patient outcomes is the hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR). We have been a significant outlier for over three years, which means we have had more deaths than you would have expected for the types of patients we care for. Three years ago, a mortality improvement board was set up and five work streams were developed, led by our senior doctors, nurses and managers. A key measure of success was to achieve an 'as expected' mortality rate across all specialties by March 2021 in comparison to other NHS trusts. The latest monthly rolling Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratio (HSMR) (for March 2021) shows that our mortality rate is ‘as expected’ for the first time in over three years. This is a result of sustained improvements in the care that we provide, our clinical documentation and clinical coding – a huge thank you and well done to all of the teams involved.
The five work streams focused on the key areas below: Care bundles y Implement care bundles consistently to achieve improvements in patient outcomes. These included bundles for fractured neck of femur, sepsis, acute abdomen, end of life, acute kidney injury, pneumonia and COPD
organisational shared learning from deaths y Working with our clinical coding team to understand how we can improve both documentation and coding of care Hospital at night y This focused on delivering standardised structured handovers for all specialities enabled by an electronic handover tool
Excellence every time (group one) y Improve compliance with fluids and electrolytes management, early detection and treatment which will lead to reduction in harm y Improve compliance with vital signs recordings that will lead to early detection and escalation of deteriorating patients Excellence every time (group two) y Prescribe correct antibiotic usage for patients to reduce overall antibiotic usage y Improve compliance with Treatment Escalation Plans to ensure patients are placed on correct care pathways and to initiate early discussions about end of life decisions Reporting and recording y All deaths to be reviewed by a medical examiner to enable improved 16
